The Orb: A Star Trek Deep Space Nine Podcast

“Cardassians” 30th-anniversary reflections A biting boy in the replimat presents a mystery that leaves Garak's arm in pain and puts the tailor's suspected spy skills to the test. Teaming up with Bashir, he helps uncover the background behind this young Cardassian wearing a Bajoran earring. The boy turns out to be an orphan, left behind after the Occupation and adopted by a Bajoran family. But there is much more to the story than it first seems, and when it is discovered that the boy is actually the son of one of Gul Dukat's opponents, Sisko's decision to allow him to remain on Bajor or be returned to his father becomes all the more difficult. In this episode of The Orb, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 30th-anniversary retrospective that will take you through all of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, one episode at a time. DOUBTING THOMAS RIKER. Kira and the crew of DS9 fall under the charms of a Riker, just not the one they think! Transporter Twin Thomas Riker has his eyes set on the USS Defiant and uses sexcraft to get what he wants. In order to stop him, Sisko must reenact Fail Safe -- or is it the TNG episode "The Wounded"? -- with Gul Dukat on Cardassia. Our theme this month is DS9's Season Three Leap Forward, looking at key episodes that showed Star Trek's middle child taking off and finding its own voice. Joining Bryan to kick things off is actor-producer-comedian Curtis Fortier, star and producer of web series 12 Sided Die, featuring Trek alumni such as Tim Russ and Andrew Robinson. The grades begin at (21:30).

Jake has a date. But things quickly go sideways with the arrival of an earring. Recognizing a legendary resistance fighter's insignia on the jewelry, Kira leads a mission to retrieve him from a Cardassian prison camp, potentially starting a war in the process. Tread Perilously's Patreon subscriber request month continues with a look at Evil via the episode called "C is for Cop." When a New York police officer shoots a stranded Black motorist in the middle of the night, he claims demonic possession as his defense. The team is soon called in to investigate. It leads David almost immediately to the officer's wrist tattoo -- a symbol that correlates with one of the sigils. Is there a cabal within the department (and television shows about police) going back a century? Meanwhile, Ben confronts his night terrors (sort of) and Kristen tries to hide her part in LeRoux's death. Justin is once again confronted by a secret show, and because of its nature, comparisons to Locke & Key become inevitable. Erik proves incapable of saying the name "Katja" correctly. Justin lauds the cast while Erik gives credit to Christine Lahti for a specialty skill. Justin stumps for Tremors. The Shield is once again lauded. The Predator is not. A discussion about "as you know" dialogue breaks out. Erik tries to be complementary to Ridley Scott while Justin considers the real reason why recent MCU movies don't quite work. Gods are invoked, Gul Dukat gets referenced, and Half Dome becomes a higher power.

In today's episode we're having a look at Worf, a character who's a rare series regular between two whole Star Trek shows. We wanted to have a look at some early stories of him in both TNG and DS9 and they both ended up being about bad actors wanting to ‘Make Qo'NoS Great Again' in their own ways. First we've got some rebellious Klingons making trouble in the Neutral Zone and Worf's first time being torn between his new friends and his work friends in “Heart of Glory”. Then we're over to some rash decisions from the Klingon Empire as they decide to invade Cardassia right after it's had a rebellion against its own government in “Way of the Warrior Parts 1 & 2”. This is a big, status quo changing episode with a lot of fun guest stars like friend of the pod Gul Dukat, Martok and the glorious eyes of Gowron. 0:19:39 TNG: Heart of Glory 0:49:49 DS9: Way of the Warrior Part 1 & 2 Just so you know Miles was beeping a little as the batteries on his explosive collar were running low. I edited around the beeps a lot, but there are a few still in there. - C Talking points include: our reasons for covering this episode, manifesting a god by having enough people scream at a road, The Exorcist, Brad Dourif being a moist serial killer, Brad Dourif being a good egg in Deadwood, Goodfellas (apparently that is Ray Liotta's real laugh), the works of M-Scoz, Kylie Minogue, Rick Astley, Bill Bailey's Klingonness, Blake's 7, Classic Doctor Who, The Simpsons, ValSpeak, Shenmue, Wing Commander, The Young Ones, Babylon 5, Red Dwarf, Brian K Vaughan, Mystique, Star Wars and space battles, event comics, and Gengar. Oh, and occasionally Star Trek. Pedant's Corner: Sweeps weeks are when people like Nielsen do their ratings calculations, so channels often pulled big stunts to try and get people watching. We didn't know AGIMUS was going to come back when this was recorded The decision and placement of Way of the Warrior was quick, even if it was sidetracked by several tangents Casual Trek is by Charlie Etheridge-Nunn and Miles Reid-Lobatto Music by Alfred Etheridge-Nunn Casual Trek is a part of the Nerd & Tie Network https://ko-fi.com/casualtrek Miles' blog: http://www.mareidlobatto.wordpress.com Charlie's blog: http://www.fakedtales.com

What If ... All Series Had Season 6 Character Deaths? In the last episode of season six of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," audiences were in for the shock of their lives - Lt. Cmdr. Jadzia Dax was killed by a possessed Gul Dukat. No one saw it coming, and many fans were left bereft that one of their favorite main characters had been taken away. Whatever the behind the scenes story was of contracts and labor-management negotiations, this meant the final season of the series would be missing one its main stays - and introduced a replacement "Dax" with the character of Ezri. The trio asks ... what if this happened in every Trek series? They look at The Original Series, The Next Generation, Voyager, and Enterprise, determining which "main" character would shuffle off the mortal coil in the finale of a series' penultimate season and how it would be handled with a replacement (or not). This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3169638/advertisement

What's less casual than the Maquis? This episode we're watching our first non-pilot two-parter with “The Maquis” which introduces some Federation rebels, something you didn't often see apart from in the occasional colony as a one-off problem. Well, these folks are going to be a bit tricky both as a problem and an existential threat to the concept of the Federation. At least, that's the potential of them. We watch a couple of episodes which aired around a fortnight apart and had different levels of effectiveness at showing the Maquis. 06:48 Star Trek: Deep Space Nine “The Maquis” 43:21 Star Trek: The Next Generation “Pre-Emptive Strike” Talking points include: WM Akers' roleplaying game “Comrades” which Charlie ran in the Age of Apocalypse one time, Blake's 7 (a lot), doing a Starfleet irl, BBC's Ghosts, The French Resistance, Falcon & The Winter Soldier, The Krakoan Age of X-Men, Boris Johnson's undisclosed amount of children, Succession but with Gul Dukat, Phantom Menace Trade Route Chat, Babylon 5, ruining your 90's pop childhood by looking into Ace of Base, Mandalorian Season Three, Farscape, the ‘five years later' Legion of Super-Heroes, Lovely Bryan Fuller, oh, and occasionally Star Trek. Trek, Marry, Kill wraps up its Star Trek: Picard Season Three prep by watching this 4th season episode that introduces Cardassians to the world of Star Trek ... and maybe the world to the Kardashian family?Joining Bryan this week is Rian from podcast network QCODE to discuss what might be the perfect example of Captain Picard in action playing to his strengths. How does he (via Patrick Stewart's performance) convey so much power without firing a phaser or delivering a drop kick? That's Shakespearean training for you! In this one, he's up against two all-time great Star Trek performances, one from Bob Gunton as Maxwell and Marc Alaimo as Gul Macet, a great preview of his performance for many years on Deep Space Nine as Gul Dukat.

No Hate November continues and for a second week in a row the co-host comes in hot with a REWORKED Don't Get. I personally disavow all of these shenanigans. I'm bringing in real Do Gets and these clowns try and stay the course, how embarrassing.- Representing Yourself- Star Trek: Deep Space NineThe constitution guarantees you a right to a speedy trial, a right to face your accuser, and most importantly a right to legal counsel. Who needs those people though? First off, they're expensive. These lazy guys sit in a office all week, go to court one afternoon and list off some gobblygook latin non-sense. The court, who's in a on the scam "drops" the charges, but now you have to pay the lawyer the money you owed anyway. The whole thing is a scam. Eliminate the middle man, represent yourself. In the golden era of Star Trek no other series is lauded as much as Deep Space Nine. Deep on the frontier of the federation suddenly the hub of the galaxy, Deep Space Nine is a slower show dedicated to character and skewing the utopian ideals of the series coming before it. Deep Space Nine has a lot of highlights, the Dominion War, expanding the Ferengi, a post Cardassian Occupation where Gul Dukat did nothing wrong. 15 million deaths over 50 years, that's basically nothing. The real story in Deep Space Nine though is a story of Father's and Sons. Ben and Jake, Rom and Nog, Joseph and Ben, Miles and Kariyoshi, Worf and Alexander, and who doesn't need a good father son story? All that plus we talk about Psychotic Trekkies, The Perfect Old Fashioned Glass, and catching Pikachu.

The Orb: A Star Trek Deep Space Nine Podcast

Dukat's “Civil Defense” As central as Dukat was to the overall Deep Space Nine story, he didn't appear so often in the early season. The third-season episode “Civil Defense” marked only his eight appearance—and the first of the season—and the writers took the opportunity to bring his character into focus. With a more sinister, in-it-only-for-me tone, the former commander of Terok Nor went from rather everday bad guy to serious villain—and one that would take his place among Star Trek's greatest. In this episode of The Orb, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing take a closer look at Gul Dukat within the context of “Civil Defense” as they discuss the character's selfish nature, desire for adoration, hatred of Garak, and lust for anything that puts him on the pedestal. Find out why we feel this is perhaps the most important foundational episode for Dukat. You have two minutes to start listening before we release the hounds! We wrap up our two-part story with lots of guest stars! We have Marc Alaimo as Gul Dukat, Melanie Smith as Ziyal, Andrew Robinson as Garak, JG Heltzler as Martok and Robert O'Reilly as Gowron. Not only do we need to survive the onslaught of Jem'Hadar ships from the end of last week's episode but we need to get Worf back to the Alpha Quadrant! By Inferno's Light We quickly put the death of Garak's dad behind us and try to figure out how to get the heck out of the internment camp. Back on the station we learn that Dukat has been up to no good for a long time and has aligned himself with the Dominion in order to become ruler of all of Cardassia (this seems like a very short-sighted plan). But maybe the biggest secret in this episode is the dark plan that Dukat and the Dominion have to destroy the Bajoran sun. Yikes! What's this rebinge thing? In Purgatory's Shadow When a mysterious Cardassian message is received from deep in the Gamma Quadrant, Garak tries to sneak away in a runabout.
