In this episode, we ride the wave of 90s nostalgia with Surf Ninjas—a martial arts comedy that's equal parts absurd and awesome. Join The Dale, Cea, and Twan as we break down the tale of two brothers, ancient prophecies, and the power of Sega Game Gear. Listen in as we debate whether it is a hidden gem of the ninja craze or a wipeout.
This episode we're talking about our childhood memories with the Sega Game Gear as we continue to discuss our favourite handheld gaming devices!Join this channel to get access to perks and Emotes:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVQ1hkpEAqjHI8t5dYRWhEQ/joinFollow Me on Twitch @ https://www.twitch.tv/dukey03Follow DG on Twitch @ https://www.twitch.tv/dgonlineJoin the Luminaries of The Lifestream Discord: https://discord.gg/YkhAQtDDRz
Join mega nerds Dre Alvarez and Jeff May as they geek out on a different nerdy cultural touchstone every month. Part reminiscence, part historical deep dive. This month, Dre and Jeff are joined by the star of our episode's subject, the incredible Nic Cowan, as they wrap up their season on Unfortunate Martial Arts Properties with thecult classic 1993 film Surf Ninjas. There's a lot to unpack about this unhinged family film, so let's go Moto Surfing, murder a surprisingly large amount of people, and use a Sega Game Gear to control the fate of the universe, as Nic answers our incessant questions and we all dive into this wonderful, unfortunate martial arts property. Don't forget to follow Dre (@nerdnumbers) Jeff (@heytherejeffro) and Nic (@undeadguy) and have a nerdy day! It's time for us to conjure up Psychic World, this game where you play as a girl with ESP skills metaphorically coming out of her ears who is tasked with literally defeating hordes of monsters that have literally escaped from a scientific research facility. There is talk about the game (an early 90s Game Gear 2D action-platformer-schmup hybrid), as is tradition, but Chris and Ashley also reminisce about the mid-90s paranormal activity resurgence for more time than is probably healthy. If that's your bag, listen in. If you want to find out about Psychic World, listen in too! DoA forces Monte to watch a forgotten kids' movie from 1993, the terrible and hilarious Surf Ninjas. Clearly attempting to capitalize on the martial arts craze arising from Karate Kid and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the film contains notable actors Leslie Nielsen and Rob Schneider in some of their most forgettable roles. Surf Ninjas attempts to shoehorn product placement for its own video game on the SEGA Game Gear portable video game system, using the novel approach of having the video game be used as a tool for prophecy. While completely ridiculous, Surf Ninjas does provide some accidental big laughs and can be viewed as a time capsule for terrible 90's cinema.

Surfing? Sometimes! Ninjas? Yes! A magic Sega Game Gear and becoming the heirs of the kingdom of Patusan? Yes and yes! Johnny (Ernie Reyes Jr.) is about to turn 16. So, to make sure he becomes a teen father, it is arranged that he will marry Ro-May (Kelly Hu). Zatch (Ernie Reyes Sr.) blows up the family house! Whoops! Now everyone is homeless but magical. Johnny is accompanied by his younger brother Adam (Nicolas Cowan) and friend Iggy (Rob Schneider) to help take down the mechanical hand of Colonel Chi (Leslie Nielson) and his evil army. Come along with RTS on this ninja-tastic adventure. La-Mar and Collin join to take on this assault and bask in the island's sun. Where did Tone Loc go?
This week on Saturday Night Jive we take another dip in the Rob Schneider pool and watched Surf Ninjas from 1993. The story of two young boys and their 30 year old friend who discover that they are actually the heirs to a kingdom on a magical ninja island. Only one thing stands in their way, cyborg Leslie Nielsen. With the help of a magical SEGA Game Gear and Tone Loc they complete their quest to reclaim their throne. There's not much surfing and the ninja stuff is boring. This is pretty much a huge waste of time other than Rob Schneider in a Hitler mustache. We couldn't picture watching all 3 of these bad Home Alone sequels, and we couldn't imagine making you listen to 3 episodes worth of that. So we each watched one of them, and sum them up for you in our own way in this one compact ep. You don't have to watch these movies, unless you're some sort of masochist who hates spoilers for irrelevant movies. Mike watched 2012's Home Alone: The Holiday Heist. It has a haunted house/mobster subplot, a hidden speakeasy, and made Mike wanna drink. Jake watched what legitimately sounds like the worst idea for a Home Alone movie ever, with 2002's Home Alone 4. Adam watched 1997's Home Alone 3, and, though I forgot to mention it in the episode, one of the biggest letdowns was that the kid never used the yellow Sega Game Gear he had hanging from his utility belt on the movie poster. False advertising. Deal Breaker. Game over. We also tangent about sleeping on the floor, cold showers, and The Office. Early 90s pop culture icons don't come much bigger than Mario and Sonic, but if anyone's going to give them a run for their money it would be Batman! This week Chris has brought along Batman Returns for the Sega Game Gear. Can the caped crusader do anything to warm the hearts of our dastardly duo? Quan su, dudes! In this episode, Rachel, Trae, and Josh wax up their boards and head out into open water to explore the maddening mysteries and cacophony of cultural insensitivities of the 1993 film Surf Ninjas. This movie has it all: the martial arts talents of Ernie Reyes Sr. and Jr., a Sega Game Gear that can foresee the future, Rob Schneider as the unfunny sidekick, Tone Loc as a fish-out-of-water LAPD detective, and Leslie Nielsen as a cyborg samurai warlord who eats up 10 minutes of the movie doing answering machine gags. Is this messy melange of goofy dialogue, chaotic plot points, random action set pieces, and awkward silences after Rob Schneider's character says something racist a genuine attempt at art, or a soulless Cash Grab? The Nintendo Switch and Valve's forthcoming Steam Deck are the culmination of decades of evolution in portable video game systems. This week we honor the handhelds that paved the way, from the Atari Lynx and Sega Game Gear, to the venerable Nintendo Game Boy and all of its successors.
Fantasy Zone, released on the Game Gear in 1991, is a bright, bold and breezy shoot-em-up starring Opa Opa, a sentient space ship. Confusingly, it is a reworking of Fantasy Zone, released on the Master System in 1986, a bright, bold and breezy shoot-em-up starring Opa Opa, a sentient space ship. Have you ever bought a game on sale? Well, shame on you! According to John Garvin, writer of Days Gone, "If you love a game, buy it at f***ing full price." Is there any merit to his argument? We're joined by Trevor of New Dad Gaming Podcast to work through the issue of bargain games and rejected sequels. But yes, first we've got game announcements (like the upcoming Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic remake and Amazon's cancelled Lord of the Rings MMO). Next, headlines are up. This week, we're talking about Sony's walk-back of their decision to close the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita, how lots of people missed out on Resident Evil Village's timed demo, how the rumors of Square Enix's sale were greatly exaggerated, and the welcome news that Discord will not be bought by Microsoft (at least not yet). Finally, we wrap up a show with a look back at the Sega Game Gear on the handheld's 30th anniversary.Follow New Dad Gaming Podcast:https://linktr.ee/NewdadgamingBuzzsprout Affiliate Link (https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=825751)Hosts: @retrogamebrews, @wrytersview, @newdadgamingMusic: "Gumption" by Russell Gordon at https://soundcloud.com/shredrussell-1Editing: @wrytersviewLogo: @thewellredmageSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/storymode)

Welcome to a new episode of the Never Ending Backlog, today we are mixing things up a bit and instead of reviewing a specific game, we are prepping for next week. As you might be aware, 2020 marks the 60th anniversary of SEGA and their various properties. Next week, Zach will review five (possibly more) SEGA games that have sat in his Steam backlog. As a huge fan of the SEGA Genesis, SEGA Dreamcast, and SEGA Game Gear, Zach wanted to take this episode and relive his past experiences with SEGA, how it started his obsession with arcade collecting, and other various memories of games that he had played in his childhood. This episode is also different as his past memories with SEGA primarily revolve around consoles, as traditionally this podcast has been aimed at computer games, so we are mixing up all kinds of things on this episode. But don't worry, we will be back next week with PC game ports from SEGA.We are looking forward to next week on the Never Ending Backlog podcast, but don't worry, we have a special treat for you on this Friday's episode. Be sure to listen and follow us on social media platforms.
In episode 20 we discuss the Cyberpunk 2077 crunch drama and the dickhead journalists making up false news.Sony finally announces the PS5 backwards compatibility in detail and it's good news.Plus, Western Digital officially announce the first compatible SSD expansion for the PS5.The sad state of Marvel's Avengers and its future. Will the Spider-Man update save it in 5 months?Mortal Kombat 11 finally announces a new DLC character pack, and the rumour from last week is true. Rambo!A very cool Ghost of Tsushima update has landed. Plus don't forget to get the Legends update this weekend!Sega Game Gear Micro is the smallest and most expensive piece of plastic ever. Some details on Mario 35, the battle royal style game, which has a timed release.Lawsuit filed against Microsoft regarding their Xbox Elite Controllers.Plus a lawsuit against an Indian man for trademarking the PS5 name. Sony aren't going to be gentle.Plus the usual stuff! Enjoy and subscribe!

Greetings, gamers, and welcome to episode 2-2! On this episode, we dive into a topic first popularized by the Super Marcato Bros, Karl and Will Bruegeman, on their own VGM podcast: a compositional technique called the Five-Finger Fanfare. Also included in the show is a clip from their 201st episode, which aired on January 31st, 2016.This was an exciting and challenging episode to put together, and the track list is the result of many months of making mental notes each time we'd come across this sound in the wild. It's not exactly something you can type into a search bar! Regardless, everything fits our Number One Rule: Everything is very good music!Special thanks to our Patreon patrons, Alex “The Messenger” Messenger of A VGM Journey, The Last Rican, Skeletroy, and Carlos from the Heroes Three Podcast! We finally finish Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Game Gear! Yes, it's a shorter game, but it certainly felt longer as we struggled through pale imitations of better Sonic games. But we arrived at the final boss of the game, Doctor Robotnik (surprise!), and take him down! We discuss our favorite parts of Sonic the Hedgehog, which levels stood out and which were our least favorite. We also talk about Dr. Robotnik's strange fetish, the multiple endings of the game, and the state of Sonic games in general. All this AND MORE in a totally tubular episode of One Stage at a Time! Don't miss out on this final retrospective on Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Game Gear! www.onestageatatime.com intro music: "8-bit Eighties" by injury (ocremix.org) Twitter: @onestageatatime Andy Twitter: @primmtropolis Aaron Twitter: @aaronindatwits email: onestagepod@gmail.com FB: facebook.com/onestagepod insta: @onestageatatime Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCk5hAb-3ciPoAuHKKkWWbFg --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/one-stage-at-a-time/message
As 1990 winds down for Game Boy Works, it's only proper to explore the major competitor that entered the Japanese market that fall: Sega's Game Gear. Where Atari's Lynx was too poorly supported and too region-specific to pose a serious threat to Nintendo's handheld dominance, Game Gear arrived just as Sega began its meteoric 16-bit ascent in the west. And this trio of Japanese launch titles—a set of arcade conversions running the gamut in terms of original vintage and play styles—demonstrates a canny understanding of what made the handheld gaming market tick. It's a strong debut showing for Sega as they positioned themselves to attack Nintendo's grip on the games industry on two fronts at once. Special thanks to Stone Age Gamer for helping to make this series possible with their EverDrive-GG X7: https://stoneagegamer.com/everdrive-gg-x7-black.html Video Works is funded via Patreon (http://www.patreon.com/gamespite) — support the show and get access to every episode up to two weeks in advance of its YouTube debut! And be sure to check out the Retronauts podcast (http://www.retronauts.com), where I (and many others!) tackle a much wider array of classic gaming topics each week.
Brett is trying to get caught up on his games and as such he goes back to Call of Duty Modern Warfare to finally beat the single player story. He walks away pleasantly surprised with lots of great moments and lots of intense, real emotional decisions. Austin also jumps back into Final Fantasy 7 Remake to give his update on where he is in the story. In the news, Project Cars 3 gets revealed via a trailer. It looks a lot like Need for Speed now! Kojima had a project canceled but fear not, he's working on something else. Sony announces Game Gear Micro and Dice wraps up their final content for Battlefield V. We also go down a tangent about gaming as an adult and how different people play different ways. Our discussion this week is on the best co-op games with your friends. We've been playing a lot of games with our friends as of late and wanted to share some of our favorites.
