What do Irish rebel songs and Star Trek have in common? This week on Pub Songs & Stories, we raise a glass to courage, truth, and the songs that refuse to obey. From the Easter Rising of 1916 to a Cardassian interrogation chamber, today's songs ask one dangerous question: Do you trust your own eyes? Music from Kinnfolk, Erin Ruth, Marc Gunn, The Irish Lassies This is Pub Songs & Stories #312 0:29 - Kinnfolk "A Wintertime Feast" from A Wintertime Feast 5:15 - WELCOME TO PUB SONGS & STORIES Every song has a story, every episode is a toast to Celtic and folk songwriters. Instead of praising Irish soldiers who died fighting for England in World War I, the song asks why they were not fighting for their own land instead. It tells of ordinary men and women who stood up against a powerful empire, even when the odds were stacked against them. That's why it's a rebel song—it's about choosing freedom, courage, and self-respect over obedience. Versions like the one by Erin Ruth keep that spirit alive, reminding us that quiet voices can still challenge injustice and inspire change. 15:09 - Erin Ruth "The Foggy Dew" from Erin Ruth 18:25 - NEW PROTEST SONG INSPIRED BY STAR TREK: NEXT GENERATION "Chain of Command, Part II" from Star Trek: The Next Generation centers on Captain Picard as a prisoner of the Cardassians. His captor, Gul Madred, uses pain and fear to try to control him. But the real goal is not information. It is obedience. Madred wants Picard to stop trusting his own eyes and accept what the government tells him is true. Again and again, Picard is pushed to say something he knows is false. The episode shows how power can try to rewrite reality—and how courage can be as simple, and as hard, as holding on to the truth. It echoes George Orwell's 1984, reminding us that the final test of freedom is whether we trust our own eyes—or believe the government when it tells us we are wrong. 21:34 - Marc Gunn "Four Lights" from Four Lights single 23:56 - TODAY'S SHOW IS BROUGHT TO BY CELTIC INVASION VACATIONS Every year, I take a small group of people on a relaxing adventure to one of the Celtic nations. Your support is the reason I'm still making music, telling stories, and showing up month after month. Patreon is how modern, independent musicians survive and thrive. Album Pins and CDs help get me on the road and in front of live audiences, but my day-to-day livelihood—the time it takes to write, record, podcast, film, and share—comes directly from Patrons of the Arts. As we continue into a new year, Patreon is where everything comes together. Patrons receive a brand-new song download every month. These are exclusive tracks you won't find anywhere else—works in progress, experiments, and finished songs that come straight from my creative desk to you. You'll also get regular updates when there's news to share, behind-the-scenes blogs, short and long-form videos, and access to a growing archive of bootleg concert recordings and special performances. The band started when long-time childhood friends decided to take their casual Irish sessions and grow into a professional folk group. In only a few short years, the Irish Lassies have become known as one of the premier Celtic bands in New York State. Their self-titled album The Irish Lassies is comprised of traditional Irish music with unique Lassies' arrangements. Immigration Stories, an all-original album, aims to take listeners back to 18th and 19th century America with heart-felt true tales of Irish settlers. The Lassies' unique style focuses on powerful ballads using six-part harmonies and soulful songs that will invite you to raise a glass, dance, and sing along with a set list that takes you on a journey from Ireland to America. Episode Notes *Except for Garak Star Trek horror episodes have two modes: worse than the cave set, or unbelievably good. Cardassians do not believe in Right to Repair. These redshirts are VERY redshirt. Some board game hot takes. Genre-awareness in redshirts. Super-racism drug? Nog's great. Garak, but turned up to 11. The ethics of improvised space slurs. The qualities of horror and the cast's opinions. BabSpace9 is a production of the Okay, So network. Connect with the show at @babylonpod.page Help us keep the lights on via our Patreon! The Wounded (Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG), S4 E12) was recommended by Crimson (he/him), who said: This is another watershed episode: We get Cardassians for the first time! Furthermore, we have Marc Alaimo playing a Cardassian, though not the one we're used to (he still chews it up nicely here...though those mutton chops, woof). It's also a great episode for giving Colm Meany a chance to stretch his legs, especially as he and Rosalind Chao carry the B plot. I love that this episode digs into war trauma and the prejudices it can breed that you don't even notice, as well as the difficulty when you move on from something and someone you respect doesn't. Plus we get some quite nice singing -- Minstrel Boy is one of my favorite tunes, though I first recall hearing it from Black Hawk Down. (And as an aside, Minstrel Boy is a prime example of how the Irish and Klingons might find a lot in common. Who else has an upbeat song about dying gloriously in righteous battle?)The Wounded first aired on January 28, 1991, written by story by Stuart Charno & Sara Charno & Cy Chermak, teleplay by Jeri Taylor, and directed by Chip ChalmersA rogue Starfleet Captain (Bob Gunton) jeopardizes the Cardassian peace treaty. The Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com · Twitter · Facebook

From Klingons to Cardassians, and most memorably as Admiral Forrest on Star Trek: Enterprise, his performances are etched into Trek lore.

At last, your faithful podcaster reach the origin point for the most underbaked, poorly explained antagonistic force in all of Berman-era Trek as we review "The Maquis, Pt1"! When a bad actor shows up to play Sisko's totally-not-a-terrorist best friend, we get a fantastic buddy cop road trip with Dukat, some seriously dickish Cardassians, and your hosts lamenting for 20 minutes about how much better it all could have been with minimal effort.

Four crewmembers travel back to the past, when the Cardassians still ran the station. It seems to have something to do with Odo, but what? --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thenerdtrekpodcast/support

Less than two months to our Star Trek cruise and we booked flights through Spirit! What are we thinking? The Cardassians talk about the delay of "Batman 2" , Disney and the 700 Million for Andor, and Bob Dylan. We wrap up our episode by reviewing "Brothers" and "Suddenly Human"
When a humble tailor can't keep his hands to himself, we are gifted the opportunity to review "Cardassians"! After Garak gets bit, the galaxy's most complex custody battle takes place. O'Brian gets to be extremely racist, Dukat gets to chew scenery, and Bashir might want to think about locking his door.
It's the 23rd, and you know what that means? It's time to celebrate FESTIVUS! Join the Cardassians as we talk Seinfeld. But before we get there, hear our reactions to the Superman trailer.
I love doing musical intros! After his old archeology teacher shows up to guilt trip him on a goose chase, Picard fondles some figurines before his teacher is killed. He leaves behind a trail, and Picard ignores protocol to make the DNA tell him and Crusher where to go next. Cardassians show up, then Klingons and Romulans, yet the Captain finds a way to put the petal to the warp metal and piece together the news that one man seeded all the species in the galaxy. That's why the aliens of Star Trek all look the same. Because they all came from one dude. His name was Roddenberry! Get in touch with us on BlueSky @ReEngageTNG.bsky.social! Its season finale time for Star Trek: The Next Generation as we review the episodes "Transfigurations" and "The Best of Both Worlds". Before the Cardassians dive into that, we talk Plastic Surgery, "The Batman", The Box office of "Wicked" and "Gladiator 2"
There is a lot of Batman news this week...and since Batman makes everything better you get to hear about it. It also wouldn't be a normal episode if Rob couldn't talk about Mission Impossible. The Cardassians then dive into "The Whitest Sitcom Ever". Finally, in the 2nd half, our review of "The Next Generation" continues with "Sarek" and "Menage A Troi"
Its another week of the Cardassians, which means more Woody Harrelson slander. When the Cardassians aren't talking about Woody...the conversation shifts to Blockbuster, and their failure to purchase Netflix. What other companies made major mistakes to doom their business? We debate 16 year old drivers verse 87 year old drivers. Finally, we continue our review of The Next Generation reviewing the episodes "Hollow Pursuits" and "The Most Toys".
It's a special week on Keeping Up with the Cardassians as we welcome back longtime friend of the show, Star Trek Alumni, and Author, Nana Visitor. Join the Cardassians as we talk with Nana about her recently released book "Star Trek: Open a Channel: A Woman's Trek", available at all major retailers now.
This episode was recorded on March 14, 2024. Scott and Sam discuss "The Way of the Warrior," where war breaks out between the Klingons and the Cardassians, two alien races with unsteady alliances with the United Federation of Planets. The Klingons' aggression jeopardizes the peace between them and the Federation, and Worf, as the only Klingon officer in Starfleet, is brought in to deal with the situation.
