This week on Feeding the Mouth That Bites You, Dr. Ken unpacks a word every parent has heard lately—dysregulation—and what it really looks like in teenagers. Spoiler: it's not always as clinical or mysterious as it sounds. Sometimes it's just what we used to call “spiraling” or “losing it.” We talk about how to tell the difference between a teen who's simply being disrespectful and one who's truly overwhelmed by emotion, and why calling everything “dysregulation” can actually make parenting harder. Dr. Ken breaks down what's happening when your teen crosses that line from moody to out-of-control, why they can usually hold it together outside the home, and what to do when they can't. We also get real about what happens when we join the chaos. If you've ever found yourself matching your teen's energy (or volume), this conversation will give you a few tools—and probably a laugh—to help you step back and respond differently. It's a practical, hope-filled episode for every parent navigating big emotions, slammed doors, and late-night drama.

If the times weren't so serious, you'd have to laugh at Barak Obama returning to the stage to express his concern that leftists aren't being "heard" because of Charlie Kirk's death. He's supposedly fearful the President Trump is targeting voices with whom he doesn't agree. Of course it's absurd coming from the single biggest divider and the culturally toxic rhetoric he introduced and infused into his party almost 20 years ago now. Lawfare is but one of the ways the American left has targeted speech they don't like. Christina Bobb, President Trump's attorney and author of "DEFIANT" explains in full detail all one goes through when the left targets you using attorneys. In the wake of Charlie Kirk's assassination, this episode dives into the weighty themes of martyrdom, spiritual warfare, and kingdom legacy. The hosts reflect on Charlie's bold faith, his commitment to truth in the public square, and how his death is already sparking gospel conversations and revival across the world. They explore what it means to live with a “peek into glory,” to be righteously defiant like Daniel and the apostles, and to not shrink back in fear. The episode also transitions into a practical challenge - how believers can steward their time, talent, and tithe to build God's Kingdom here and now, even in the midst of darkness. With real stories, honest struggles, and tangible next steps, this conversation calls listeners to live boldly, give sacrificially, and trust deeply in God's sovereignty even when we don't understand.
This sermon is from a series originally preached by Pastor Trice in 2014-2015 entitled "Peter, Portrait of a Christian." These messages focus on the work of God's grace in one of the most colorful and endearing of all Christ's disciples. Note that there are references in it to the original name of our congregation: "Matthews Orthodox Presbyterian Church."

A Parenting Resource for Children’s Behavior and Mental Health
Parenting a child who pushes back at every turn can feel downright draining. You've tried the time-outs, the sticker charts, the consequences—yet the meltdowns keep coming. It's easy to start second-guessing yourself or wondering if you're doing something wrong. You're not alone. It's not bad parenting—it's a dysregulated brain. In this episode, I'll show you why what looks like defiance is actually emotional dysregulation—a nervous system issue, not a character flaw. We'll walk through the five signs your child is emotionally dysregulated, not defiant, and I'll give you practical, brain-based steps you can use to calm the storm and move forward with hope. Why does my child overreact to small problems? One of the biggest giveaways of emotional dysregulation is when kids have big feelings over little things. Maybe it's the broken crayon, the wrong-colored cup, or being asked to do five more minutes of homework. These disproportionate reactions are a sign that your child's nervous system is in overdrive. It isn't bad behavior—it's your child's body signaling stress overload. For younger children, this often looks like temper tantrums. For older children, it may show up as irritability, anger, or even shutting down. No matter their age, these big emotions tell you that their emotional regulation skills need support. The key question to ask yourself is: Is this their go-to response? If your child is regularly melting down over small problems, it's not about being oppositional or defiant. It's a clear sign they're struggling with:Emotional regulationSelf control and coping skillsA dysregulated brain that needs help returning to calmWhen you reframe these moments as emotional dysregulation rather than “bad behavior,” it shifts how you respond. Instead of getting caught in power struggles, you can focus on calming the brain first—because that's where real change begins. Why does my child stay upset long after a problem is solved? Some kids just can't seem to let go. Even after the situation is over, they're still stuck in those big emotions long after everyone else has moved on.This isn't about holding a grudge—it's their nervous system getting caught in a stress loop. No matter how much reassurance you give, they may replay the moment again and again. That's what emotional dysregulation does: it traps kids in the feeling and blocks them from practicing self regulation on their own.So what helps? Co-regulation. Your child's behavior is communication, and what they need most is your calm presence. That means:Keeping your tone soft and steadyModeling deep breaths and slowing your body downStaying close so they feel safe, even if they don't accept comfort right away

Embrace Your “Rare Breed” Traits – The characteristics we're often told to tone down—rebelliousness, audacity, emotion—can actually be flipped into an unstoppable force when harnessed thoughtfully. Mission, Vision, and Values Require Simplicity and Action – Misalignment happens when company values are complicated. Codify and tie core beliefs to clear actions so your team can rally around a shared mission and truly perform. Sound Bites: “You have to succeed because of who you are, not despite who you are.” “Vision without action is just a daydream. On 28th August 1588, the year of the Spanish Armada, a young Franciscan friar named Thomas Felton was hanged near Brentford, Middlesex. Felton's “crime”? His Catholic faith, and his refusal to acknowledge Elizabeth I as head of the Church. The son of Blessed John Felton (executed in 1570 for posting the papal bull of Elizabeth's excommunication), young Thomas endured brutal imprisonment and torture — confined in the Little Ease, flogged, and even hanged by his hands until they bled. Yet he refused to betray his faith or the priests who sheltered English Catholics. He was just 21 years old when he went to the gallows — turning down a pardon rather than compromise his beliefs. In this podcast, I, Claire Ridgway, historian and author, share the tragic yet inspiring story of Thomas Felton, and why his courage deserves to be remembered. They want us to believe that silence is strength. That if we keep our heads down, the storm will pass. But we are the storm. And our storm doesn't need fists. It needs strategy, courage, and the fire of militant nonviolence. In the latest episode of Gaslit Nation, Jamila Raqib, the executive director of the Albert Einstein Institution, delivers a masterclass in radical defiance without a single weapon raised. Raqib doesn't just talk resistance. She teaches the art of war, the nonviolent kind, built on discipline, planning, and unshakeable conviction. She carries forward the torch of Gene Sharp, the quiet revolutionary whose writings, like From Dictatorship to Democracy, which the Gaslit Nation Book Club read in March, have armed movements from Serbia to Syria. His ideas are dangerous, not because they incite chaos, but because they illuminate how to take power back without bloodshed. And dictators fear that more than any rifle. This is militant nonviolence. It's strategic. It's disruptive. And when practiced with precision, it brings regimes to their knees. Blueprint for the Battle Ahead Raqib outlines a crucial truth: power is not monolithic. It comes from the obedience of people, workers, civil servants, police, students. Withdraw that obedience, and even the strongest tyrant collapses. Take Serbia. Take Bangladesh. The world keeps giving us proof that nonviolent action isn't weak; it's lethal to authoritarianism when wielded with discipline. These movements succeeded not because they were polite, but because they were strategic. Organized. Defiant. This is how repression backfires. Every crackdown becomes fuel. Every jail cell, every bullet, every propaganda campaign becomes a rallying cry, if activists know how to use it. Weapons of the Peaceful Warrior Raqib reminds us that art is a weapon. Culture is armor. Community is infrastructure. And technology is a battlefield. Whether it empowers or undermines you depends on how well you understand it. Movements rise and fall on logistics, not just slogans. Fear will always be there. That's normal. But as Raqib insists, fear doesn't mean stop. It means go smart. Fear is a compass, if it scares the regime, you're probably doing something right. Nonviolence is Not Passive. It's Precision. This conversation isn't about kumbaya. It's about battle-readiness. It's about studying the terrain of power, exploiting the cracks, and toppling giants with the slow, grinding force of disciplined resistance. Nonviolence doesn't mean surrender. It means refusing to give your enemy the war they want. It means winning on your terms. And in a time of rising fascism, digital surveillance, and global despair, we must turn to the tools that have worked, again and again. So study Gene Sharp. Listen to Raqib. Organize like your life depends on it, because it does. This is not the time for feel-good hashtags. This is the time for public education, mass mobilization, and strategic action. Nonviolent resistance is not soft. It's the hardest fight there is. But it's the one that wins. EVENTS AT GASLIT NATION: NEW DATE!
