You know that thing where you show up for a new job and find out you're a messianic figure of prophecy. Okay, maybe that's just a Sisko thing. Ren, Zylla, & Sara are ready to dig into Deep Space Nine, starting with one of Trek's best opening episodes. Episode Notes The Reckoning: We see Kai Wynn and get angry. Imagine digging a hole and finding your name on the welcome mat. Justen interrupts with some BattleTech news. The Prophets brain-woosh Sisko and tell him about The Reckoning. "I'm an engineer, not a linguist." We have thoughts about the proper handling of ancient artifacts. Pre-doom happy hour? Bashir jinxes it. Will of the prophets, shrug emoji? There is no Kira, only ZUUL. "Just zap her with some chronitons." Wait, is this a Dragonball Z episode? Kira talk-slaps Kai Wynn. We're slapped around the head by the metaphor. The Valiant: SO many red flags in this episode. The Shenandoah, RIP. The Defiant-class to the rescue! Staffed by Red-squad cadets. Obviously what you give teenagers as a punishment for treason is a WARSHIP. The Teens can't shift out of 2nd gear. Space is flat. Nog gets a brevet promotion. Justen gets angry about operational mandate. Main Character Syndrome. Big Damn Hero, subverted. Nog gains command and finally makes the good decision of "let's get out of here". The transfer from "undying loyalty" to "dying for you" is where cults come in. BabSpace9 is a production of the Okay, So network. This week's episode has a little bit of everything—local politics, a suspicious number of Star Trek–named kittens, some genuinely cool green tech, and a short story that hits you with an existential haymaker. Real Life Devon's in a "life is… fine" zone, which is either stability or the calm before chaos—we'll let you decide. That leads into a surprisingly interesting question: does a mayor's party affiliation actually matter at the local level? Texas elections are happening right now, and it sparks a broader conversation about how much politics really trickles down into day-to-day governance. Also on the home front: kids' birthday parties, which are somehow both joyful and mildly exhausting. Ben has fully entered his foster-dad era—but for kittens. A whole crew of them: Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway, Archer, and their mom Majel. He claims he didn't name them, which statistically feels unlikely. Either way, it's a Starfleet-grade lineup. Meanwhile, Devon's household remains firmly anti-new-pet, so don't expect a crossover episode there. We also touch on For All Mankind, and then pivot into the upcoming Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender film—specifically the leaks, early reactions, and what happens when studios lose control of the narrative before release. There's some real-world legal tension brewing there. Steven… well, Steven exists this week. (You'll hear it.) Future or Now Devon brings in a heavy one: reports that the independent board overseeing the National Science Foundation has been abruptly dismissed, raising serious concerns about political interference in scientific research and long-term innovation. You can read more here: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/apr/28/trump-fires-national-science-foundation-board https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-fired-national-science-foundation-board-b2965242.html This isn't just bureaucratic reshuffling—it could have real downstream effects on funding, research priorities, and scientific independence. Ben tries to balance things out with something genuinely cool: Mosscrete. https://gorespyre.com/ It's a bioreceptive concrete designed to grow moss directly on buildings using nothing but rain and humidity. No irrigation, no maintenance-heavy systems—just passive, living architecture. It's one of those ideas that feels obvious in hindsight but actually takes some clever engineering to pull off. This whole topic also dredges up a deep memory: Bill Nye's moss-and-milk experiment. If you know, you know. If you don't, you probably just learned something slightly unsettling about childhood science videos. Steven is present in this segment as well. Technically. Book Club Next Week: Saint Zero of the Hollows and the Eagle Knight by V.M. Ayala https://www.lightspeedmagazine.com/fiction/saint-zero-of-the-hollows-and-the-eagle-knight/ "The only sound Zero heard in their helmet was their own hyperventilating and the gentle pings from their pegasus." That line alone is doing a lot of work. We're excited for this one. This Week: Learning To Be Me by Greg Egan http://thetafiction.com/story/learning-to-be-me/ "I was six years old when my parents told me that there was a small, dark jewel inside my skull, learning to be me." This story landed hard for all of us. It follows a life from childhood to adulthood in a way that feels deceptively simple—until it isn't. The structure does a ton of heavy lifting, and the twist is the kind that makes you immediately want to reread it. We get into some big ideas here, especially panpsychism—the notion that consciousness might be a fundamental property of the universe rather than something that just "emerges." It's one of those discussions that starts philosophical and ends slightly unsettling. If you like episodes that bounce between grounded real life, big-picture science, and brain-bending fiction, this one's for you.
Episode Notes Batman! In the Pale Moonlight: Coming on the heels of Inquisition, this is SOMETHING. Personal Log. The grim ritual of the casualty logs. How do you convince the Romulans? Garak is always up for a little light skullduggery. Quark has his day. Julian puts up a fight. What an interesting development. Garak also has his day. The self-respect of one Starfleet Officer. Sisko's long descent into the moral grey. Garak's respect for Sisko. Curzon knew Romulans. BabSpace9 is a production of the Okay, So network. QUARK THE GAMER. We kick off "Are We Sure It Was Bad?" Month with one of the more memed episodes of Star Trek: the episode where Sisko, Kira, Dax, and Bashir become trapped in a board game brought through the wormhole by gaming aliens from the Gamma Quadrant. Shereese the Sci Fi Savage beams in to see if this one is a TREK, MARRY, or KILL. Check out Shereese's YouTube channel here: The Sci-Fi Savage - YouTube Learn more about your ad choices. Nothing quite like spicing up your road trip with Cassanova Dukat as we review "Indiscressions". Fresh off his promotional experience, everyone's favorite frenemy gets himself invited along as Kira hunts for survivors of a lost prison ship. While these two chums speed run their way through "The Searchers", Sisko takes on relationship advice from everyone...yes, even Bashir!
Sisko takes time out of running the station to defend Worf from being too Klingon-y. Is it another great Trek legal foray or will this episode be overruled by Matt or Andy?[Episode discussion begins around 1:12]
The Sisko is joined by another guy who thinks he's the Emmisary (what, can ANYBODY call themselves an emmisary?) and quiet discussion ensues! Oh, and a casual homicide. And the boys asks the question: have Bajorans always been religious kooks?[Episode discussion begins around 53:00]
This episode of the Sisko and Mike Podcast features entrepreneur, content creator, and survivor Catherine Emmerich, who shares her powerful story of surviving human trafficking as a teenager. At just 13 years old, Catherine ran away from home and unknowingly entered a world of grooming, manipulation, and trafficking. What started as attention and kindness quickly turned into control, violence, and exploitation. In this conversation we discuss:• The reality of domestic human trafficking in America• How traffickers groom vulnerable teenagers• Why many victims don't realize what's happening• The psychological effects that last into adulthood• Parenting, trauma, and rebuilding trust• Why society ignores the buyers behind traffickingCatherine also shares how she survived, how motherhood changed her perspective, and why she now speaks out to prevent other young people from experiencing what she went through. This episode contains discussion of sensitive topics including abuse and trauma. In this episode of the Sisko & Mike Podcast, comedian Chris Zaragoza shares the wild story of getting SALSA thrown at him during a live stand-up show… and how it unexpectedly went viral. From dealing with drunk hecklers to mastering crowd work, we dive into the reality of being a comedian in today's world — where one moment can change everything. We also talk about: • The grind of going viral on social media • Why most creators quit too early • Hosting vs headlining comedy shows • The pressure of political opinions in entertainment • The truth about “selling out” • And yes… a tattoo challenge if this hits 1 MILLION likes
Photonic protagonist Sam becomes the vehicle for an unexpected and emotional coda to Deep Space Nine and the Sisko family, with familiar actors and characters once again gracing canon, leading Ken and Staci to reflect on connecting with and losing their own fathers. We then get the return of Paul Giamatti as Nus Braka in a chilling battle of wits and deception with Chancellor Ake, pairing with the previous episode to heal old wounds and reopen others. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Episode 5 review & breakdown! We're talking “Series Acclimation Mil”—SAM, the Sisko mystery, and a huge Deep Space Nine love letter. Spoilers for Starfleet Academy S1E5 — we hit the red alert early. We're back! Captain Shoff, Captain Linda Pages, and Captain Vactor (This Comic Cooks) break down Episode 5 from SAM's perspective, including the “Confronting the Unexplainable” seminar, DS9 connections, and why this episode hit so hard. Question of the Week: If you could “confront the unexplainable” in Star Trek history… what case would YOU pick?
This episode examines Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's “Series Acclimation Mil,” an ambitious, philosophically grounded story that uses SAM and Sisko's legacy to explore choice and becoming. While the episode is conceptually strong and thematically coherent, its execution is uneven, with stylistic choices such as disembodied voiceovers and moments that verge on fourth-wall disruption undercutting its...

This week the fate of The Sisko is revealed, sort of, as Sam investigates one of the great mysteries of the universe: What exactly happened in the “Deep Space Nine” series finale? More than a nostalgia trip, it’s a story that sets one of the “Starfleet Academy” characters on a new course. Plus: Our boy Kyle is back! Scott McNulty and Jason Snell.
When SAM is under pressure from the makers on Kasq, getting into a new class about the unexplainable puts her on the trail of another important emissary. But after exploring the life and legacy of the Sisko, SAM learns she no longer has to defend her choices to succeed. Who didn't get screeners? Which stunt was shot like a ConAir explosion? What is the propellor hat of confections? It's the episode that treats DS9 like a sacred text.Support the production of Greatest TrekGet a thing at podshop.biz!Sign up for our mailing list!Greatest Trek is produced by Wynde PriddySocial media is managed by Rob Adler and Bill TilleyMusic by Adam RaguseaFriends of DeSoto for: Labor | Democracy | JusticeDiscuss the show using the hashtag #GreatestTrek and find us on social media:YouTube | Facebook | X | Instagram | TikTok | Mastodon | Bluesky | ThreadsAnd check out these online communities run by FODs: Reddit | USS Hood Discord | Facebook group | Wikia | FriendsOfDeSoto.social Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. [Review starts at 4:09 / Interviews start at 58:03] Anthony and Laurie keep the news short this week, but do talk about a new comic series from IDW that covers the unexplored (and very dark) history of why the Klingons are refugees in the 32nd century. The rest of the podcast is dedicated to Starfleet Academy episode 5, “Series Acclimation Mil” and its loving tribute to Deep Space Nine and the Sisko family. As they discuss the episode, they play clips from various interviews with Tawny Newsome and Robert Picardo, then afterwards, the full interview Tony did with Tawny and Cirroc Lofton.

And the Starfleet Academy train (shuttlepod?) keeps on rolling (flying?) as we jump in to talk about Episodes 4 and 5, "Vox in Excelso" and "Series Acclimation Mil," aka the one with the Klingons and the one with... well, that's a spoiler, actually.Suffice to say, you do NOT want to miss this episode of TR3, as special guest star Ken Reilly from TrekCore returns to dig in on a wormhole-sized Trek event. So cook up some gumbo, put on your Niners uniform, and listen now!
New this week from STARFLEET ACADEMY is "SAM." Episode Notes The Magnificent Ferengi: It's never a good sign when Quark looks overly pleased with himself. Moogie has been captured... by the Dominion? And QUARK has to rescue her? Rom learns what Moogie has been up to. STONKS. All Nog needs is a good job title and he's in. Ferengi are negotiators, not warriors. Emo Vorta. Everything that can go wrong does. IGGY POP??? Nog discovers the Weekend at Bernies gambit. Maybe Ferengi are warriors? This whole episode is a sunday night RPG session (appreciative). Vorta malevolent curiosity. Only in a Ferengi episode would accidentally killing a hostage be ok. The best Trek episodes are ones where the actors are clearly enjoying themselves. Waltz: Sisko and Dukat road trip gone wrong episode. Nebula-class chat. Dukat "saves" Sisko? Dukat is hallucinating a lot, but that's fine, right? Dukat has an interesting memory of his two stints as DS9 commander. Fake Kira might be even better than real Kira. Huh, maybe Dukat just needs to be removed from the Alpha Quadrant. This episode is deliciously uncomfortable. Dr. Cox??? Marc Olaimo put in the labor over the last 5.5 seasons in order for this episode to work. BabSpace9 is a production of the Okay, So network. Gather round friends as Joseph and Peter take a rare opportunity to do an in person episode (sorry about the echo) to deliver on their judgements for Deep Space Nine, Season3! After a often thrilling, deep, and overall fantastic ride - what o we rank at the top? The bottom? What was weak? And who was able to hold their own with Sisko?
As we reach the end of Season 3 at long last, DS9 previews the horrors to come for the Alpha Quadrant as we review "The Adversary". Our heroes get to play at their own version of "The Thing" as they deal with the haunting reality of an enemy who is a total sociopath and could be anyone or anything on the ship. But hey, at least Sisko is confronting these problems with a full four pips!
WE ARE BACK!!! after taking a break, we sit down to talk about what the last year really did to us as individuals and as a team. From personal growth to professional moves, this conversation gets real.....fast! We also get into what's happening with ICE raids and why it hit close to home, leading to one of the most heated moments we've had on the show. Did Mike become an Edgar over the break? Do women like guys with trucks? Then it's time for our No Manches. Sisko goes off on fake content creators using our cutlure for clout, Mike talks about people being politically correct and Pierre having trouble dating? It's honest, It's funny and It's uncomfortable at times and exactly the kind of conversation we started this podcast for. #Latinopodcast #podcast #latinopodcast #comedy Learn more about your ad choices. Hailing Frequencies Open - Send us a message! The gang peels back the layer of "Second Skin." We discuss Cardassian decor, hypothesize about a teen Cardassian bedroom, and Sisko becomes a cat. Engage!
Episode Notes Lots of war episodes... time for a wedding! Sisko has nominated Martok as supreme commander. Quark wants to know if the wedding will be at the bar. Jadzia wants the wedding before Alexander gets killed. Dax is amused by Worf's bridezilla-ing. Worf sells what the boys think is a 4 day bachelor party. You should really read Shakespeare in the original Klingon. Klingon domestic politics. Jadzia has a bachelorette party with basically everyone not at Worf's ascetic fast-fest. O'Brien Suffers [fun?]. What better place to talk about feelings than a loud and noisy party? Kira and Odo 7 hours in heaven. O'Brien and Bashir have some goofs. Klingon mythology kinda rules. We love this episode AND there are some things we wish they'd included. BabSpace9 is a production of the Okay, So network. Happy New Year! In this episode, Ryan and Brady get their annual Ric Olie reference out of the way quick before discussing a DS9 episode that has a lot of fun little character bits for Sisko as it explores the nature of responsibility. Also, I chose the episode image because of O'Brien's incredible turtleneck. A true god among men.
Season's Greetings and Good Will Towards Profit as we review "Family Buisness"! When 'ol Jeff of Many Faces shows up as the local Ferengi IRS agent, Quark and Rom deal with the consequences of their mom being a buisness genius. Meanwhile, every member of the DS9 crew is conspiring with Jake to get Sisko hooked up with a local space trucker while comitting some light criminal activity.
Episode Notes Favor the Bold: Odo and the Changeling... ugh. They could not have conveyed Odo's shame and disgust more clearly. Rom's on death row. The fate of the Alpha Quadrant is in... Quark's hands? Damarr is just bad at everything. Morn?! Kira whoops Damarr like he's Worf on TNG. Nog receives a promotion! The heroes so far are Quark, Rom, and Morn. Sisko is tired of running, time to retake DS9. Sacrifice of Angels: The Charge of the not-so-light brigade. Time for a fleet battle. Quark is... not under suspicion? 4D Chess. The comparative morals of exterminatus vs triumphs. Weyoun finally reads Dukat. Costuming choices. The Female Changeling makes some choices. Quark does some shenanigans. Quark does some SHENANIGANS. Odo to a very disappointingly motivated rescue. Space gods to a very dickish rescue. Check out Justen's new project! The Vampire With No Name is a production of Dubious Creatures Press. In an extra lengeth episode, we dive into the depts of every part of the true beginning of the best Trek ever made - "The Die is Cast"! Garak has made the classic error of thinking he can go back to work at the job that fired him last time, Sisko provides a perfect demonstration of Starfleet General Order 2, and Odo proves exactly how good a man he has become.
Episode Notes We had a good week. Too bad these episodes are less good. Sons and Daughters: Worf continues to bridezilla. Bet you forgot Alexander existed, because Worf sure did. Worf continues to be a terrible dad. Dukat is a less terrible parent than Worf, somehow. Dukat is able to simultaneously be genuine and try to find every possible advantage. Martok is, on the other hand, a swell dude and a better friend than Worf deserves. Behind the Line: The Defiant is operating out of Starbase 375 and kicking butt. So much that Sisko's skills are being "better used elsewhere". Poor Captain Dad. The Ketracel White situation is getting worse, and Damarr has no opsec. The Female Changeling stops by the station to goo with Odo, and gosh is that bad for the resistance cell. BabSpace9 is a production of the Okay, So network. "You can't be afraid of the wind" and you can't be afraid of the new TrekRanks as this week we salute the heroic captain of the NX-01 Enterprise with our "Top 5 Archer Episodes." It's a deep dive episode of TrekRanks that traverses the temporal cold war to bring you all of Archer's greatest moments from "Broken Bow" to "Terra Prime." Our expert panel of host Jim Moorhouse and guests Michael Angie and Melanie get deep into the defining actions and motivations of Starfleet's original captain – the one who set the standard for all who followed. This is a very special episode of TrekRanks. Don't miss it. Episode Rundown: Diagnostic Cycle: We go through our role call of past "character deep dive episodes" (this is the 21st!) and break down that it is the fifth and final episode showcasing the legacy Trek captains, coming on the heels of Kirk, Picard, Sisko and Janeway. Prime Directive: Each guest on this week's panel reveals exactly how they narrowed down their list and made their final choices, and everyone reveals their one-word to help define Captain Archer. The Order of Things: All the picks are revealed with the TrekRanks' original "Five words and a hashtag" summary. Secondary Systems: For a few extra picks that just missed our final list. Regeneration Cycle: The panel recaps their picks and we dissect some of the interesting statistical anomalies that arose from the discussion. Temporal Inversion: We reveal a secret temporal inversion hidden inside this week's episode. It's pretty cool, and pretty special. If you have your own picks you would like to relay to us, please hail us at 757-828-RANK (7265) and record your own personal TrekRanks log to let us know your Top 5 Archer Episodes. (Or you can record it yourself and just DM us @TrekRanks.com on Bluesky.) Your comments could be used as part of a Temporal Causality Loop on an upcoming episode (and might get you a chance to be a guest on a future episode, too). And don't forget to check out TrekRanks.com for our entire back catalog of episodes and a detailed rundown on every episode of Star Trek ever.
And now, the conclusion… of our deep dive into Star Trek's first three-part episode arc ever, wrapping up with DS9's “The Siege.”This week, Kira and Dax get their Top Gun on while Sisko, O'Brien and Odo play Die Hard on the station. Does this 32-year-old episode still hold up? You'll have to listen to find out.We also recap New York Comic Con and the new, cool toys coming from Nacelle. And yes, we have a Red Shirt. So snack on a palukoo and listen now!
Sisko is out of commission, Kira finally learns how to treat him like a regular friend and not with all the reverence due the Emissary (had she been doing that?), Worf plays out the ol' "person suddenly in command who needs to learn how to be command" trope, and Bashir and Dax get cracking on retconning Bashir. But don't forget about Odo! Actually, you probably can except for one scene.[Episode discussion begins around 1:23 - for a whopping 2:45 for a regular episode! Mostly nonsense.]
