April Walker became a legend in the hip-hop fashion scene, as the first woman to break into the industry when she opened her store, Fashion in Effect in the late 80's. Over the decades, she dressed icons like Biggie, Tupac, Jay Z, and Mike Tyson in her Walker Wear brand. In the process, she herself became an icon. For our season 3 premiere we'll hear April's story, from her inspirations growing up in Brooklyn to the next generation she is inspiring now. Grey Interviewer: John Patroulis, Worldwide Chief Creative Officer
Fashion Icon April Walker, from Brooklyn, New York, is considered as one of the architects and trailblazers in streetwear. The release of ‘The Remix: Hip Hop X Fashion' in 2019 on Netflix, put a spotlight on Walker Wear as one of the brands pioneering with the glitterati of Hip Hop from the eighties and nineties. New York was a diverse melting pot of hustlers, the famous, athletes and even correctional officers. On the flip side April reveals the underbelly of the misogynistic and oppressive music and fashion industries, being black and being subjected to mass-misappropriation, yet also being a woman - the first to launch a streetwear brand in that era. She dressed major league artists such as 2Pac, Biggie, Aaliyah, Jay-Z, Method Man, and many other legendary artists, who undeniably shaped black culture globally up to this day. She paints a charming yet gritty scene of New York, leaving you in awe of the tenacity of talented musicians, rappers, fashion designers and stylists who were driven by heart and creativity in a sleepless city about to explode.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/FANpodcast)
For our final episode of 2020, we welcomed a personal hero of both of ours—the trailblazing designer, entrepreneur, and thinker April Walker (@iamaprilwalker), who in the past three decades has been instrumental in shaping the industry and aesthetic category we now call “streetwear.” In 1987, Walker launched her custom clothing boutique, Fashion in Effect, out of her own home. The following year, she opened her first shop on Greene Avenue in Brooklyn, paving the way for the birth of her seminal ready-to-wear label, Walker Wear, adored by the likes of Aaliyah, Mike Tyson, Tupac Shakur, and the Notorious B.I.G., to name just a few. For our 34th episode, Walker shares snapshots from her experience bearing witness to the interconnected evolutions of Hip Hop and New York fashion, and explains why collective work and cooperative economics are crucial for inventing a different and better future for the fashion industry. https://www.instagram.com/iamaprilwalker/ https://www.instagram.com/Walkerwear/
We talk about how she was there with Biggie Smalls, making the scene when Brooklyn was a scary place. And how after her super successful Walker Wear line launched, she became the rap world’s go-to stylist. Years later, still on her game, Walker has emerged as an elder stateswoman to a new generation as designer, mentor, life coach, consultant and all around inspiration.
