Tim gets the bit (or byte?) between his teeth and rants about the 90s and the lost promise of the internet, and a little bit about cheapie TV movie Max Knight: Ultra Spy! Jen just tries to hold on as best she can! Oh yeah, and this is part one because we don't know how to shut up!You can easily tell how white your hosts are by their lack of knowledge of UPN (not the only tell, if we're being honest), which provided a home for black shows and showrunners alike. Or at least it did for a while, before a gradual whitewashing leading up to the network's merger with the WB. The Hollywood Reporter provides a post-mortem.[Former senior VP of comedy development at Paramount Pictures Television] Rose Catherine Pinkney believes the decision to merge UPN out of existence came down to ad revenue. “Ultimately, you want the most dollars that you can get for your ads,” she says. Though UPN's Black-led scripted shows (which by the end of UPN's run included Eve, All of Us, Everybody Hates Chris) were largely popular with audiences, advertisers were evidently less inclined to pay top dollar to support shows targeting Black viewers. Farquhar, co-creator of Moesha and The Parkers, recalls an advertising person saying, “We're not interested in ‘downscaled demographics.' ”They still make Tamogochis, holy shit. Can't get enough of PCMCIA cards? Critic and writer Naomi Zeichner joins Pop Pantheon to explore the career of the “vocal bible,” Brandy. Louie and Naomi unpacked Brandy's self-titled 1994 debut, released when she was just 15, her landmark acting roles as Moesha and Cinderella, and 1998's Darkchild-assisted Never Say Never, which reimagined her at the vanguard of R&B futurism and became one of the signature blockbusters of the decade. They then discuss 2002 adventurous electropop-R&B fantasia Full Moon, 2004's deeply personal Afrodisiac and her later period work, like 2012's Two Eleven, which kicked off a cultural and critical reappraisal of her work. B. Cox and Domo review Brandy's classic sophomore album Never Say Never as it turns 25. After her smash eponymous debut album helped make her a household name among R&B fans, Brandy began to diversify her portfolio as an entertainer, starring her own sitcom Moesha, the Cinderella remake and I (Still) Know What You Did Last Summer. In late 1997, she began recording her second album now linked with an upcoming producer Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins. Jerkins along with his production and writing team of his brother Fred, Harvey Mason, Jr, Lashawn Daniels as well other writers and producers David Foster, Marc Nelson and Diane Warren among others, set to craft a new sound for the maturing Brandy.Jerkins and his versatile production style proved to be a match for Brandy and her now mature and powerful voice and his production and writing team helped build an album that reflected Brandy's life, struggles and innermost thoughts. He also encouraged her to co-write a few of the songs, which made the project that much more candid and well rounded. The final product was something far beyond what fans or critics could dream of.The album featured up to seven singles, most notably two #1 Billboard Hot 100 hits "The Boy Is Mine: featuring fellow R&B singer Monica and "Have You Ever?" and the top 20 hits "Angel In Disguise" and "Almost Doesn't Count". The album has been certified 4x platinum and has sold 16 million copies worldwide. It is Brandy's best-selling album to date and is recognized as her best and most influential work.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comBuy Exclusive The Vault Podcast Merchandise!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeSupport The Vault Classic Music Reviews on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesAlbumism: Brandy's 'Never Say Never' Turns 25 | Album Anniversary https://albumism.com/features/brandy-never-say-never-album-anniversaryVibe: Alex Vaughn Remakes "Almost Doesn't Count" for 'Never Say Never' 25th Anniversaryhttps://www.vibe.com/music/music-news/alex-vaughn-pays-tribute-to-brandy-never-say-never-1234764027/BET: Brandy's "Never Say Never" Was A Semi-Confessional Executed To Perfectionhttps://www.bet.com/article/y4e2n0/brandy-never-say-never-retrospective-25th-anniversaryThe Urban Journal: Essential Albums: Brandy's "Never Say Never" At 25https://urbjournal.com/brandy-never-say-never/OkayPlayer: Brandy Talks 20 Years of "Never Say Never"https://www.okayplayer.com/originals/brandy-interview-never-say-never-20-years-later-okayplayer.htmlSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

With over 40 years in the entertainment industry, Sheryl Lee Ralph has a trove of both trials and triumphs to her credit. In this sneak speak episode of OWN's podcast, Trials to Triumphs, host Ashley Blaine Featherson-Jenkins talks with The Tony Award-nominated multi-hyphenate who takes Ashley back to the beginning of her career and describes who she was before landing her breakthrough role as Deena Jones in the seminal Broadway musical Dreamgirls. Sheryl underscores key lessons she learned from her parents and mentors, including the power to determine which doors to leave closed. The original Dreamgirl also unpacks the most difficult season of her life: navigating her divorce as a single mother, leaving the hit tv show Moesha, and losing herself along the way. Sheryl recalls the encounter that helped her “rise to the occasion of her own life,” and how, just like her character Deena, she owned her inner diva. Want more podcasts from OWN? This week on It Was a Thing on TV we're pushing daisies and crabs in outer space. First, Star Trek: Voyager was a success for UPN. So was Moesha. The powers that be thought, "Why not combine the two? It'll be a hit!" Spoiler: It wasn't. It did give us The Space Hoopty, for what it's worth. Then, for our Easter 2023 episode, we're not talking about cutesy-wootsy bunnies this year?! We're talking about someone who can revive the dead. Pushing Daisies was a critical darling but it couldn't come back from a fate worse than the death of a scripted show in 2008. Finally, in 1984, the San Francisco Giants needed something to get fans' attention away from their poor play on the field. Enter the first ever anti-mascot a crustacean mascot which drew heat from not only the fans, but the Giants and the opposing teams as well. It's all immortalized in one of the best baseball commercials ever. In the tradition of comedians who have made the transition from the stage to the screen, such as Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby, multi-talented Guy Torry has made the leap to comedic actor with great success. Guy has been seen on BET's Comic View, Comedy Central's Premium Blend, Showtime at the Apollo and Russell Simmons: Def Comedy Jam where he made his stand up debut to a national audience. Guy also hosted the enormously successful 52 city comedy tour The Kings of Comedy, which grossed over $37M. He created a unique concept called Phat Comedy Tuesdays which was a weekly showcase for up and coming comedians. This evolved into a weekly spotlight at the Comedy Store on the Sunset Strip entitled The Guy Torry Show where Guy hosts and produces a comedy showcase featuring an improv comedy troupe. This event was regularly attended by the comedy A-List including Eddie Murphy, Chris Tucker and Chris Rock. While attending Southeast Missouri State University, Guy had a curious desire to pursue a career in entertainment. Once in Los Angeles, he landed a job as a production assistant on the Fox comedy Martin. His quick wit captured the attention of the show's writers, producers and eventually the show's star Martin Lawrence. Guy became a contributing writer to the series and had subsequent writing stints on sitcoms such as Minor Adjustments and Moesha. The St. Louis native also received critical acclaim for his work on the small screen starring in the NBC mini-series The 70's, the HBO movie Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, and the UPN drama The Strip. He hosted BET's sports talk show Baller, with four-time NBA World Champion John Salley and three-time NFL Pro Bowler Hugh Douglas. Guy has made guest star appearances on television series including Blind Justice, The Shield, One On One, X Files and NYPD Blue. He also supplied his voice on the animated Nickelodeon series As Told By Ginger. Guy has appeared in such feature films as Funny Money, opposite Chevy Chase, Penelope Ann Miller and Chris McDonald, The Last Stand, starring Anthony Anderson, Darrin Henson, Kevin Hart and written and directed by Russ Parr, Dead and Deader, opposite Dean Cain and Susan Ward, and the independent thriller Slow Burn, opposite Ray Liotta, Taye Diggs, LL Cool J and Mekhi Phifer. Guy has also appeared with Matt Damon, Greg Kinnear and Eva Mendes in the 20th Century Fox Film, Stuck on You, and his other film credits include Runaway Jury, Don't Say A Word, Pearl Harbor, Life, The Animal and most notably American History X. Guy is currently performing in comedy clubs across the country, and resides in Los Angeles.
