Jerry Kolber is the co-creator and Showrunner of National Geographic's #1 series, BRAIN GAMES, for which he received a Prime Time Emmy Nomination. Kolber and Atomic are a frequent collaborator with icon Pharrell Williams, having created and producer BRAINCHILD (Netflix) with Pharrell, as well as two upcoming documentaries. Kolber is the co-creator and host of the world's most popular 3x weekly kids educational podcast Who Smarted?, which had three million downloads in its first year. Kolber's other creator and Showrunner credits include Inked (A&E), Confessions of a Matchmaker (A&E), GE in the Wild (with Mythbusters' Adam Savage), and the space documentary 14 Minutes from Earth (Netflix). Kolber grew up in the swamp in South Florida. He was an avid cyclist, theater kid, and nationally ranked Lincoln-Douglas debater. Kolber didn't know regular people could make movies until he met a group of regular people at NYU who were studying to make movies, where he was studying theater production and design. Kolber's first job was as Business Manager of the legendary Jean Cocteau Repertory Theater on the Bowery. Kolber followed his time at the Cocteau Rep with a summer in the immediately- post-Communist Czech Republic, attempting to produce theater in circumstances better suited to producing a nervous breakdown. Upon his return to the states, Kolber began working in the stage theatrical departments at major movie studios, including Universal and Disney. Kolber began his career in television in the production finance department at Dick Wolf's Fox hit “New York Undercover”, bridging the gap between finance and creative. He was the production auditor on the first seasons of HBO's Sex And The City, and Bravo's Queer Eye For The Straight Guy, ultimately becoming line producer of more than fifty episodes of Queer Eye while learning to put the hair product in from the back. Kolber went on a wild ride in the rapidly expanding early landscape of unscripted television, working for E!, fuse, Bravo, Disney/ABC, National Geographic, Discovery ID, MTV, Animal Planet, and multiple A&E series, as an in- demand Co-EP, showrunner, and writer of unscripted entertainment. He always knew that one day he would bring his love of entertainment and disdain for outdated one-size-fits-all education together and Brain Games provided the first of many opportunities to show what was possible. Since 2010 Kolber, his team at Atomic, and their amazing partners have been responsible for some of the most successful and beloved edutainment programming in the world. Kolber is a long-time resident of Manhattan's Lower East Side. “To navigate complexity, you need people who not only believe in the same change you do, but bring experience so deep and unique, it fast forwards your ability to see clearly,” I wrote this note about my brother, Little Shawn, after finding an intrinsic connection within myself that equally matches who he walks with inside himself.  That deeper relationship we carry within our being creates room for our witnessing and connection with those who see (and KNOW) what we're really about. Seeing yourself is that unique gift from the universe saying, “You're right where you need to be. Don't move. But make MOVES.”  That's what Shawn Pen, aka BEHIND THE SMOKE, is doing right now. He's already written the documentary of his life, the book, the words. Now he's moving it to screen (documentary, that is) for us to see what's really “behind the smoke.”  If you know, you know.  If you don't, this episode will open windows into the rap scene in a way you'd only dream possible. Remember: hip hop and rap is the spine of culture. It's the body. It's the blood, And it influences everything around us. It influences everything I care about and everyone I care about. Peep the list (below) of Shawn's WORKS, history, and the tools you'll get from listening to this one-of-a-kind episode from a one-of-a-kind person. WORKS: I could list it. But it's better I don't. Let's start here: On Wikipedia, it says “Tyrone Shawn Wilkins, (born December 21, 1969) better known as Little Shawn and Shawn Pen, is an American hip hop artist, rapper, songwriter and producer from East Flatbush, Brooklyn."  Then it says, "Little Shawn released the single "Dom Perignon" (Uptown Records) featuring fellow Brooklyn rapper The Notorious B.I.G. on 20 July 1995. The music video also featured Busta Rhymes, another rapper from Brooklyn. It peaked at #5 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 as well as #87 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles and #23 on the Hot Rap Tracks charts. The song was featured on the soundtrack to the Fox TV crime drama New York Undercover." It's rumored that Tupac Shakur was on his way to record a verse for Shawn when he was robbed and shot 5 times in 1994. We get into this. And much more. (See the list of TOOLS below) And make sure to follow @behindthesmoke to stay plugged into WHERE HE'S GOING. Not just where he's been.   Tools You'll Get from This Episode: - Tools to stay clear-headed when the world wants you foggy - Unmatched tips for how to stay truly dedicated to your truth and knowing of self - Tips that remind you how to present yourself in a way that honors your integrity - Reminders that empower you to ensure your influence isn't overtaken by outside influences - Helpful guidance to uplift your image when others see you in a way that differs from your own knowing of who you are - Inspiration for cultivating your clarity and sticking to it

It's not every day you get to go back to your old school and talk with your teachers. Today, we got that chance to speak to one of them. Doctor Dre was the only doctor I knew growing up besides Dr. Spock. Dre, along with Fab Five Freddy and Ed Lover, were instrumental in our early exposures to hip-hop. They helped educate and they definitely helped entertain us. If not for YO! MTV Raps, many of us wouldn't have even known these classic rap videos existed. There was no internet back then. Certainly nothing remotely close to Youtube. If you didn't catch Music Box, Pump It Up, Rap City or Yo!, chances are, you just missed out! While Fab Five Freddy took on the more serious role as the teacher who dropped knowledge all day, it was the fun-loving duo of Doctor Dre and Ed Lover that really captivated you. They had you laughing from the start of the class to the end of it. They left you wanting more. Doctor Dre knew how to kick dunn language, like on Knowledge Me, and he and Ed both knew how to have fun like Back Up Off Me. There has never been a team like Doctor Dre and Ed Lover and considering how the music industry is today, especially MTV, there never will be. Before mainstream TV really embraced hip-hop, before you had In Living Color, Martin, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air or New York Undercover, it was YO! MTV Raps that was pivotal in the hip-hop movement in mainstream America. On this episode, we pay homage to YO! with 2 ridiculously dope DJ 360 mixes. We also speak to the great Doctor Dre. We talk about his early days at Adelphi University with Chucky D and Flavor Flav. We talk Original Concept, Def Jam and some interesting stories about Rick Rubin. We cover touring with the Beasties, how Bill Cosby did a very Bill Cosby thing when on YO!. We find out Don Cornelius felt threatened by their success. We talk about RUN-DMC not giving Dre the proper credit all the way to dropping an album on Def Jam in ‘88 along with Slick Rick and Public Enemy. We talk a lot of P.E., even Dre's love/hate relationship with Flavor Flav. We cover a lot of ground here. From Who's The Man, to who was the man behind the selections on the the soundtrack. But - what would this interview be without the amazing history and stories of YO!? We take you to the final episode, where that infamous freestyle session goes down between Rakim, Chubb Rock, Erick Sermon, MC Serch, KRS-One, Redman, Method Man, Large Professor, Special Ed and Craig Mack. We learn who Doctor Dre felt had the best verse on that iconic episode. So much and more. Don't miss our YO! MTV Raps Tribute Show featuring Doctor Dre!
