In this "Industry Dive" episode, Chris Gehringer, a Senior Mastering Engineer & Partner at Sterling Sound joins me for an in-depth discussion on the state of mastering & the loudness wars in modern music. Chris has mastered countless albums over the decades, such as: Wu-Tang Clan's “Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)” & Naughty By Nature's 1991 self titled album, along with modern chart toppers such as Rhianna, Lady Gaga & Dua Lipa. Chris' work has also received 20 Grammy nominations (and counting). In the episode, we talk about: the evolution of music mastering; where the loudness war stands in 2025; how brickwalling hinders the mastering process; if there will ever be an industry shift towards "louder doesn't mean better;" Eric Bass of Shinedown's experiences with Sterling Sound's Ted Jensen & how Eric prefers a more dynamic master of their music; how Chris was involved with the interludes featured on Wu-Tang Clan's "Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers);" the loudness / brickwalling controversy surrounding Metallica's "Death Magnetic;" how Dolby Atmos & AI might factor into the future of mastering & so much more! Be sure to visit MyWeeklyMixtape.com to hear all of the songs we discussed in this episode! Theme music is "Unveiled" by The 4th. Episode 82 starts with Trivelle mentioning that the Gelo hype train might be slowing down after the release of his second single, which came and went without much attention. This leads to a deeper conversation about modern fans' obsession with commercial success and the business side of the music industry, along with some theories on why this has become such a focus. From there, the discussion shifts to the types of songs that manage to stand the test of time versus those that fade away with the trends of their era. Artists like Lloyd Banks, Naughty By Nature, Young Buck, Eric B. & Rakim, Rich Boy, and others come up in the conversation. DJXP brings up a statement from legendary producer Timbaland, who claimed that there's no such thing as a "TikTok song." This sparks a debate about whether "that sound" truly exists. The conversation then moves to GloRilla's recent win at the iHeartMusic Awards and Mariah Carey being honoured with the Icon Award, which included performances of some of her biggest hits. XP also notices Anderson .Paak by her side, which leads to speculation about a possible romance—though he seems to be the only one on that ledge. As relationship and marriage topics come up, Trivelle shares his thoughts on Tory Lanez's latest jail-recorded track and Playboi Carti's long-awaited album. XP then sparks a debate by asking the group to choose between Prime 50 Cent and Prime DMX before they wrap up the episode by discussing whether there is a true Hip-Hop equivalent to Michael Jackson's Thriller.

After finding success with Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Krayzie Bone recorded his solo debut, Thug Mentality 1999, in 1999. The album was released as a double disc set, featuring a large selection of guest appearances, including Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Mo Thugs, Mariah Carey, ThugLine, The Marley Brothers, Big Pun, Fat Joe, Cuban Link, Gangsta Boo, E-40, 8 Ball & MJG, Kurupt, Naughty By Nature and Snoop Dogg. The album was largely produced by multi instrumentalist Romeo Antonio and was certified platinum by the RIAA. In 2001, Krayzie Bone released Thug On Da Line, which received generally positive reviews from music critics and went gold. In 2005 Krayzie Bone was featured in the song "Ridin'" by Chamillionaire. "Ridin'" was awarded "Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group" at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. It was also nominated for Best Rap Song. It became number one in December on the Pop Chart 3 months after its physical release. The song also topped the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number 2 on the UK Singles Chart when it was released there. The song ranked #3 on Rolling Stone's "100 Best Songs of 2006" and #91 on VH1's "100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop". It was the best selling ringtone in 2006, with 3.2 million sales, certified by the RIAA as the first multi-platinum Mastertone artist in history. It was also awarded the last Best Rap Video at the MTV Video Music Awards, which was awarded in 2006. Krayzie Bone comes from a fourth generation family of Jehovah's Witnesses, and as such does not celebrate Christmas. He believes many rappers are unintentionally following the agenda of the Illuminati.[9] On September 24, 2023, Krayzie Bone was admitted to a hospital in Los Angeles after coughing up blood in his sleep, what was later attributed to sarcoidosis. Doctors were unsuccessful in an emergency surgery. On September 26, he was sedated due to a main artery in his lung leaking. However, on October 3, he announced he had recovered from the ailment. Krayzie Bone also has a thriving foundation called "Spread The Love" that mentors and teaches at risk youth life skills and about the music business. Learn more about your ad choices. 1. Where are you from? How was your upbringing? My family escaped the Khmer Rouge regime and found a safe spot where I was born, in a refugee camp in Thailand, and then we moved to America in 1989 when I was still a baby.My upbringing started rough. My parents raised my sister and I in the Tenderloin. It's compared to Skid Row and it doesn't have the greatest reputation, but it raised me to become a wiser than normal person. Since Asian gang violence was big in the 90's, I went outside the Tenderloin and found myself making friends with everyone else, staying away from Asian gangs. If it wasn't for music, I think I would be gang banging, selling drugs, or doing god knows what. It doesn't mean I wasn't mixed in the dirt but it wasn't easy growing up there. My parents are still there, waiting for me to get them out one day. I will. What really saved my life growing up was music, sports, and being forced to volunteer at church. My sister and I grew up listening to Tupac, Timbaland, Naughty By Nature, The Fugees, Boyz II Men, Lauryn Hill, and so many more Hip-Hop and R&B artists that helped with us cope with the outside world. I looked for artists that I was able to connect with. 2. How did you begin making music?I tried making music several times growing up since my church had a band but it never really came to fruition. When I was 14, my friend, DJ Frisko Eddy and I started a DJ group called “The Untouchablez” with 2 other people at Horizon Youth Center in the Mission District. That's when I learned how to scratch and mix, but I stopped because I needed to get a “real job.” Things were always getting in the way, but I found creative ways to keep myself in the music scene like promoting for clubs, connecting talent, and managing local artists.I never really started making music until just recently last year, when my long-term girlfriend and I broke up. It was the worst breakup that I ever had because of what I gave up to be in that relationship. But…it brought me back to music. Maybe, music is my first love but I never paid that much attention to it before. It's like a memory that I'm feeling again, a familiar nostalgic feeling of love. 3. How did you get your rap name?I don't think it's a rap name. I chose Crossed The Golden Gate because my family flew over and crossed the Golden Gate Bridge when we immigrated to America. I don't think I rap like that. 4. How would you describe your musical style?I don't know yet. All I know is that I wrote poetry and spoken word my entire life, and it comes out like that in my songs.5. Tell me about “Own Nothing”.My parents and I had never owned anything in our lives. I watched my parents help other families get what they wanted by helping them with their bills and mortgage, but I had never seen my parents help themselves.I'm sitting on major debt and student loans right now and it's only because I never had support. My parents couldn't support me and my sister had to help me out a bit, but she was also struggling. My parents sacrificed so much for us and their relatives that it became normal for them. So, it's a deeper meaning to “Own Nothing” than people think. Owning anything on Earth is not appealing for me anymore since we really never owned anything. I die without it anyway, so why even care? 6. What inspired you to create Own Nothing? The struggle of my parents and my upbringing that I couldn't tell anyone about. 7. How is it different than previous drops? My first drop was a fun dance song, so this is really my first project that I dropped. 8. Is it part of a project? If so, can you tell me more about that?I am the project. 9. What message do you want fans to walk away with after listening to “Own Nothing”?Be a friend.I want people to know that people aren't what they seem and everyone is struggling. You just don't know what they are struggling with. Stay curious but don't judge a human just because you had issues with your projections. Just ask them how they're doing. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/yourbestlifestyles/support

They are best known for their 1993 hit single "Whoomp! (There It Is)," which became an iconic party anthem and a staple of 1990s pop culture.Formed in the early 1990s, Tag Team quickly gained recognition for their energetic and catchy musical style. "Whoomp! (There It Is)" was released on July 20, 1993, and its infectious beat and memorable hook propelled it to the top of the charts. The song reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained on the chart for an impressive 45 weeks. Its popularity was not limited to the United States; it also became a global hit, receiving widespread airplay and making Tag Team a household name. The success of "Whoomp! (There It Is)" was further solidified by its presence in numerous movies, TV shows, and commercials. The track's enduring appeal can be attributed to its high-energy vibe and universal party appeal. Even decades after its release, the song continues to be a favorite at sporting events, weddings, and parties. In 2020, Tag Team experienced a resurgence in popularity thanks to a Geico commercial that featured a humorous twist on their famous song. The commercial, titled "Scoop! There It Is," debuted during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and quickly became a viral sensation. In the ad, DC the Brain Supreme and Steve Rolln are seen in a suburban kitchen, helping a family make ice cream. Instead of "Whoomp! (There It Is)," they sing "Scoop! (There It Is)," cleverly replacing the original lyrics with ice cream-related terms. The commercial's playful tone and nostalgic nod to the 1990s struck a chord with viewers, leading to widespread acclaim and renewed interest in Tag Team. The Geico commercial not only reintroduced Tag Team to a new generation of fans but also showcased the duo's enduring charisma and sense of humor. ***EDITOR'S NOTES*** This episode originally aired on YouTube on May 8th 2023. This was the first time we intentionally connected the shows by affiliation as Queen Latifah mentored and introduced the world to Naughty By Nature. This was also our first time trying to add thematic music to the show including a unique intro theme as well as a beat inspired by the song discussed on the episode. Both produced by Kalashnikov Red, initially, we planned to let the inspired track play only during The Stats portion of the show and of course, we managed to mess it up! So we tried to do it live during the recording and when we activated the music, it was so loud, it drowned us out entirely (which we weren't able to hear & realize until we went to mix down the final product). So we ended up mixing ourselves into the existing episode “from the future” with the music premixed down and redoing (luckily, just) the entire stats section of the show. Trying to play like everything we were saying was made up on the spot and trying to give organic “natural” reactions was our finest moments in acting, but we managed to pull off a show that listeners outside of us saying anything about it, had no clue what had happened. Also, we began adding pictures to the YouTube videos which we also were loading up live during the show. We spent too much time fiddling with the screen and talking about us putting the photos up where we learned fairly quickly we needed to try to do something different in future shows. This is another episode where you really see us getting comfortable in our roles and where we want to take the show. As we begin to have more fun making the show, the more positive responses we were getting by the people. So there's a lot of laughter and clowning jabs at each other during this one. We hope you enjoy the episode and continue to ask y'all to please rank and review our show, like the episodes and share them with other Hip-Hop fans in your life. We're slowly growing the IG page as well so to interact with us and get more RTR content, be sure to check us out on InstaGram @RememberTheRecord Peace to everyone who's been rocking with us day one and be sure to peep our YouTube Video Podcast, The Rapper's Corner, as well. - The RTR Crew —————————————————————— ….Celebrating True Hip-Hop Icons…. B. Cox is joined once again by Van Everette of The Scenario Radio Show to review 90s R&B duo Zhané's debut album Pronounced Jah-Nay as it turns 30. The two vocalists, Renee Neuville and Jean Norris, met each other while students at Temple University and while they had two different backgrounds when it came to singing, they would find a medium that would make them a cohesive act. After linking up with power players in Philly DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince (Will Smith) and doing a showcase that caught some eyes and ears, they were taken under the tutelage of Naughty By Nature producer KayGee and were signed to Motown Records.Combining their many musical inspirations and influences, the group put out a very fun, yet mature sounding album. It was backed by their intriguing and smooth harmonies and deft songwriting over a variety of beats crossing many genres. The album was boosted three singles: the classic party jam "Hey Mr. DJ", "Groove Thing" and "Sending My Love".The album was certified platinum and things appeared to be on the up and up for the duo. However, they released only one other album, 1997's Saturday Night, to less acclaim and fanfare before splitting up. Nonetheless, they made their mark on 90s R&B with their debut which continues to be brought this day as a highlight in 1994.Check out Van Everette and The Scenario Radio Showhttps://www.thescenarioradioshow.com/Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comBuy Exclusive The Vault Podcast Merchandise!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeSupport The Vault Classic Music Reviews on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesUDiscoverMusic: Pronounced Jah-Nay: How Zhané Made A Name For Themselveshttps://www.udiscovermusic.com/stories/pronounced-jah-nay-zhane-album/Grammys: 'Pronounced Jah-Nay at 25': Zhané's Renee Neuville and Jean Norris look back at their classic R&B debut https://www.grammy.com/news/pronounced-jah-nay-25-zhanes-renee-neufville-jean-norris-look-back-their-classic-rbAlbumism: Zhané's Debut Album "Prounounced Jah-Nay" Turns 25 | Anniversary Retrospectivehttps://albumism.com/features/zhane-debut-album-pronounced-jah-nay-turns-25-anniversary-retrospectiveSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

In the forty-fifth episode of Making Mt. Rushmore, host/moderator/panelist Steve Riddle welcomes Chad Campbell to discuss which East Coast Rap Songs deserve a place on their respective lists. Is “Juicy” by Notorious B.I.G. a no-brainer? What about “Life's A Bitch” by Nas? Does “O.P.P.” by Naughty By Nature grab a spot? Does “Brooklyn Zoo” by Ol' Dirty Bastard or “Rebel Without A Pause” by Public Enemy deserve a place? After that, they discuss which West Coast Rap Songs will be part of that grouping. Can you argue that “California Love” by 2Pac shouldn't get a spot? Will “Straight Outta Compton” by N.W.A. be included? Is “It Was A Good Day” by Ice Cube in the conversation? What about “Gin And Juice” by Snoop Dogg & “Nothin' But a G Thang” by Dr. Dre?

Episode 400 is here and it's with Vin Rock of the legendary, Grammy winning, Naughty By Nature!! Vinnie joins me to discuss 30 years of 19NaughtyIII, what the album did for the group. We look back on the celebration of hip hop the Grammy's had aired the night before when we recorded this, and what it was like for the group to be one of the first awarded a Grammy for hip hop, and how they shouted out their producer, DJ Kay Gee, and called him a "super producer" before the phrase would really find its prominence decade or so later. Few groups have combined lyrical prowess and hit making abilities like Naughty By Nature. They had a string of genre defining hits over the course of the 1990's including joints like Uptown Anthem, Hip Hop Hooray, and Feel Me Flow. Selling an ridiculous amount of records did not water down their approach to music though. Vinny and Treach took rapid fire deliver to high levels of rap music inspiring a generation of rappers including this kid from Detroit name Eminem. Nate and Dave had the opportunity to check in with New Jersey rap royalty Vin Rock, who recounted the groups humble beginnings, there connection to Queen Latifah, and what's next for the rap dynasty that ruled the 90s. Vinnie from Naughty By Nature is an old friend so he's come by to break it all down. He talks about how and the guys started out dealing on the block, and how they made OPP and how that smash changed their lives, and the long slow breakdown of the group's bonds which led to very real problems. He talks about the time he punched Treach in the face and why their relationship is strained now. Amazingly honest conversation about the rise and the struggles of a legendary rap group.
