My guest on this episode is Dan Werb. Dan is an author, epidemiologist and policy analyst whose work has appeared in The New York Times, Salon, and elsewhere. His first book, City of Omens: A Search for the Missing Women of the Borderlands, was published by Bloomsbury Publishing in 2019 and was a finalist for the Governor General's Literary Award for nonfiction. He holds faculty appointments at the University of California San Diego and the University of Toronto, and was the inaugural winner of the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse Avenir Award. He is also the recipient of a Traiblazer Award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. In addition to that, Dan is a musician and composer who has performed and recorded as part of various groups and has written music for film. Dan's most recent book The Invisible Siege: The Rise of Coronaviruses and the Search for a Cure, was published by Crown Publishing in 2022. That book won the Hilary Weston Writers' Trust Prize. In its starred review of the book, Publishers Weekly called The Invisible Siege “a page-turning and unsettling look at the history of coronaviruses” and a “unique and valuable addition to the expanding body of work on COVID-19.” Dan and I talk about how his musical career does, and doesn't, connect with his scientific one, about the accelerating threat from strange and destructive new viruses, and about why the joy of winning a major non-fiction book award lasted... about a day and a half. This podcast is produced and hosted by Nathan Whitlock, in partnership with The Walrus. Music: "simple-hearted thing" by Alex Lukashevsky. Used with permission.

East to West World Music with Eitan Battat (S4 | E159) Opening Music: MFSB (as always), the signature sound of East to West. WERB 107.5 music to chill and vibe with. Hello to all my friends around the United States and internationally. You are on the right URL at the right time on another program of East to West, and this is Eitan Battat. I don't know about you, but for me, time is passing at warp speed. So many things are happening all around, and information is coming at you nonstop from everywhere. In between all the chaos and the daily routine in our business, so much pain and so much suffering. We all as humanity are so far removed from most of the pain that doesn't really apply to us or not in our neighborhood, or not in or around our immediate circles. On one hand, if they will be affected by all the pain and suffering in the world, how could we ever find one moment of joy? On the other hand, we are oblivious to almost everything that's happening unless it has an immediate effect on our lives. Take, for example, the bridge collapse in Baltimore. When somebody speaks about it, you hear, “Oh my God, it's terrible. Wow. It was a six-lane highway! What did you want for lunch?” I'm sorry, but we immediately move on to whatever is important at that particular moment. About a dozen people perished in that disaster. Never mind the half a million people that their commute to work has now been affected for an extra hour or two, who knows? We see it doesn't affect us, so we are not concerned, it's somebody else's problem. 7 Humanitarian aid workers got killed by mistake in Gaza. Oh wow, that's terrible. We move on. It doesn't affect us. We can't change that. That's humanity. However, I'm suggesting that the near and dear to be a lot more sensitive to our surrounding, be aware and be kind. You never know when your words, your donation, your smile can really cheer and change someone else's pain. All in addition to finding joy with everything that we do. I hope you find some joy and some solace with some smooth new music that I got for you right here on East to West and my reflection on kindness. So stay with me for the next two hours, I promise you I'm awesome. East to West World Music with Eitan Battat (S4 | E176) Opening Music: MFSB (as always), the signature sound of East to West. WERB 107.5 music to chill and vibe with. Hello to all my friends around the United States and internationally. You are on the right URL at the right time on another program of East to West, and this is Eitan Battat. Somehow some way, you've made it to listen to another program of East to West. Whether you listen to it on demand or live, it doesn't really matter because it's the best two hours of your week. It certainly is the best 2 hours of my week. I get to chill and sit in front of the microphone right here in my studio and share some great music that I've collected during the past few days. The program East to West has changed its characteristic over the past nineteen months. Prior to the October war, the program had a lot more upbeat first hour. Since then, the program and its two hours are much more laid back, low key and unrushed. Our carefully select and sequence all music every week so you can chill, unplug, and get into the groove. I know that many of you out there are just listening while you're doing something else, and that is the greatest way to utilize the channel vibe both East to West. I'm going to slow it even more for this program East to West. I've got some great music coming up. So, stay with me. Stay cool. Feel the vibe. WERB 107.5 music to chill and vibe with. Welcome, my dear listeners around the United States and across the world. You're on a special program of East to West, and this is Eitan Battat. Hello, my friends and family, happy to say that we are going to be celebrating somewhat the anniversary, the birthday of WERB. It's also the 3rd anniversary of East to West and I thought initially that I will bring the best of the best of East to West on this anniversary program. But then again, when I start compiling the best songs of East to West, I ended up with over 100 songs and that was not practical for two hours program. It's been quite a ride over the past three years as you will be able to tell from the stories I'm going to tell you about how we started and also I'm going to bring you some voices that supported PJ and myself to get to where we are today. PJ, my partner, and myself had to use a lot of creativity, focus, effort. That and a lot a lot of passion. After all, this radio station is truly just a passion project. It was not made for profit. It was not made to capture audience, to be an influencer, to be a political platform or otherwise. You're just a huge, huge sandbox to play. It just grew and grew, and now it has a life of its own. I want to thank all of our hosts of our programming, of course, PJ and my partner for incredible, incredible show. Lester the knife like you should all listen to that. Purple for her flashback 80s Euro Marshall for Consumer de la Maestra and of course, Steve James, Blues Cafe, Adagio radio with true darling all things next with Chris Roe, as well as the perfect beat with Mr. DJ Irving C from Belgium and ultrasonic taxi with the JK. Check out our website for everything that we have to offer and stay tuned for some more. Meanwhile I got a lot of music for you. New stuff, old stuff, the regular stuff; all on East to West. East to West World Music with Eitan Battat (S4 | E156) Opening Music: MFSB (as always), the signature sound of East to West. WERB 107.5 music to chill and vibe with. Welcome to our listeners globally and Coast to Coast in the US. You are at the right URL WERB radio.com, at the right time. And you are on another program of East to West, and this is Eitan Battat. Well, here we are, one more week have gone by at the speed of light. We have even pushed the clock one hour forward. We are springing ahead creating his artificial jet lag. It seems that it really doesn't matter what hour of the day it is, it's always a good time to slow down. However, sometimes it makes it very difficult, when you have people around you, having an attitude, have a sourpuss face, trying to tell you that they are having a bad day or don't like what you are thinking or what you are doing. Willian Shakespeare says, “There's nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” Honestly, attitude of the people around me “I'm more important than they feel, more important than education, then money, than circumstances, than their failures or successes.” I can't stand a bad or negative attitude. In fact, I try to distance myself from those with that bad attitude. What's really killing me is that they don't understand that a positive attitude on their part, causes a chain reaction of positive thought, that can change events and the outcome for themselves. Just a simple change in attitude can spark incredible, extraordinary, results. After all, attitude is that little thing that makes such a big difference. I have no idea why I'm talking to you about attitude, maybe because I was subject to some bad attitude and negative vibes throughout the week til now. Maybe I'm trying to just offload it, undust myself before it sticks to me so I can sit here and share some great music on this upcoming east to west program. Stay with me for the next 2 hours, I promise you soothing, chilled, vibey, music that you would love. If I'm not fly fishing or making fly fishing videos or content myself, one of the most enjoyable things for me to do is watching beautiful fly fishing movies from amazing producers. That's the core behind the Fly Fishing Film Tour, also known as F3T. It was a real privilege for me to sit down with Charles Werb of Adventure Entertainment. Among other things, Charles and his team are now running the Fly Fishing Film Tour. On a massive, world-wide showing tour, F3T delivers some of the best fly fishing films in the world. Charles was born in Australia and now resides in Dubai. From sailing yachts to exploring the poles, Charles is big time adventures and has a huge passion for these fly fishing films.

Bike Talk with Dave: Bicycle racing, cyclocross, gravel, mountain bike, road and tech
Fifteen years ago Charles Werb faced at red pill or blue pill kind of choice in his life: Buy a Harley motorcycle or sail across Antartica. He chose the blue pill, the color of ice, and began to work on his invention: The Swoosh Snowsailer - a craft capable of sailing across the frozen continent. Along his journey, he became a publisher of adventure and sports magazines and eventually found himself in the Adventure movie business, promoting films on climbing, ultra running, cycling, skiing, paddlesports and more, and eventually founded the company Adventure Entertainment with a couple of partners. When the pandemic shut movie theaters down, the trio quickly adapted to an online streaming service, known now as Adventure Plus, and is now home to more than 500 adventure films, including cycling, skiing, fly fishing, kayaking, running and more.
