Dave Niland is our guest for this episode. He is the head men's basketball coach at National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Penn State Behrend in Erie, PA. He just completed his 30th season guiding the Behrend Lions program. He comes from a family of legendary Buffalo (NY) sports leaders. Niland has produced 29 winning seasons in the last 30 years to rank 20th among NCAA Division III programs for winningest teams of the decade. The Lions also have earned an NCAA or Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) postseason bid in 26 of the past 28 years. Niland is the all-time leader in men's basketball coaching victories with 580 entering the 2025-2026 season. The Lions have advanced to the NCAA Tournament eight times and has made 17 appearances in the ECAC South Region Tournament, winning the title in 1998-99 and 2009-10. Niland has been named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Coach of the Year seven times- a league and college record. His teams have won seven regular-season league titles and six conference tournament championships. In 2008-09, the men's basketball team forged a record of 18-10 and earned its third ECAC Tournament bid. The previous year, Niland led the Behrend Lions to an impressive 24-5 record, as the team captured the regular-season AMCC championship and the conference tournament before eventually falling in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament in Rochester, New York. That squad's defensive prowess was recognized for the second time in four seasons, as Behrend led NCAA Division III in scoring defense, limiting the opposition to a measly 54.6 points per game.  During the 2006-07 season, Niland's team posted an impressive 21-8 mark and advanced to the ECAC Southern Region Tournament Championship Game. The year before, Niland's program received the Schoenfeld Award, the highest honor the Collegiate Basketball Officials Association (COBA) bestows each year. This coveted award is presented to the team identified as having "the highest degree of sportsmanship, character, and ethics among their players, coaches and spectators."His 2003-04 team led all of NCAA Division III in scoring defense and posted a 22-3 record entering the NCAA Division III Tournament. The 1999-2000 team had the best season in school history, setting the school record for wins with 26 while advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight- the first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance for men's basketball. Also, in 1998-99, his squad earned the ECAC Southern Region Championship. Niland came to Behrend after spending four seasons as an assistant coach at Canisius College and one season at Elmira College. He was a four-year letterman and captain during his senior year as a basketball standout at LeMoyne College. He earned his master's degree in physical education from Canisius and is now also a lecturer in health and physical education at Penn State Behrend. Dave and his wife, Debra, who has over three decades of service at Erie Homes for Children and Adults empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities through volunteerism and exploration, are the proud parents of Andy, Sara, and Matt.

In episode #293, we welcome good friend of The Coaches Site, Dave Smith. Two days before we were scheduled to record this podcast he notified us that he had been relieved of his duties as the Head Coach of RPI. Despite that, he agreed to join the pod with his only request being that we focus on the future and the positive experiences he enjoyed during his eight season's leading the RPI program. Previous to his time with RPI Smith spent 12 seasons as Head Coach at Canisius College. Prior to that, he was an Assistant Coach for seven seasons split between Miami University (Ohio), Bowling Green, and Mercyhurst. Episode 72: Andrew Dovey. Another fellow Burlington raised hockey player joined the prohockeypod this week. Andrew Dovey didn't have the usual Canadian hockey path. He didn't play AAA hockey until his OHL draft year and ended up playing Tier 2 junior until he was 21. We talked about some memories of junior, including going all the way to the Sunderland Cup Finals in his last season. Andrew would go on to D3 Adrian College, where funny enough, we would play against each other 2 times in the playoffs (1-1). Dovey would play 1 year of pro in the SPHL after college before transitioning to coaching. He would go to Canisius College as a Graduate Assistant for 2 seasons which lead to him where he is today at University of Toronto in USports. Andrew talked about all he has learned along his journey and how he tries to share his experiences with his athletes at UofT. We also mentioned early how it is awesome to see how many people from Burlington who went on to have long playing careers or have gotten into coaching. A testament to the city of Burlington and how many players have developed in the Eagles system. Hope you enjoy!

Episode 71: TJ Manastersky. Fellow Oswego Alumni and current Head Coach of Brock University, TJ Manastersky, stopped by the prohockeypod this week. TJ grew up in the GTA area and would end up playing 5 years in the OJHL before heading off to D3 SUNY-Oswego. We swapped stories about Oswego, the great community support the team gets, Bridge Street Runs, and some funny memories of the historic Oswego/Plattsburgh rivalry. After College, TJ would play 1 year professionally in the SPHL before transitioning to coaching. He was given a chance to get his foot in the door at Canisius College for 2 season before going to SUNY-Fredonia. He would get his first Head Coaching job at Curry College where he stayed for 9 seasons, helping to turn the program around and become a strong contender. After a brief stop with D1 Union College, TJ would find a home at Brock University. It didn't take him long to make an impact. In his 2nd season, the team would have their best year in school program history and TJ would win Coach of the Year. One part of the interview that really stood out to me was when we talked about how TJ establishes his culture at his schools. He takes into consideration the school history/community involved as well as his players. How do they see the culture? What do they want to be viewed as? Questions like these. Ultimately this leads to teams creating their own identity and running with it. Another great episode so give it a listen and hope you enjoy!

Canisius College Head Coach, Trevor Large dropped by the prohockeypod this week. Like most Canadian's, he was attracted to hockey at a young age. One interesting thing about his story is that he quit hockey during his OHL draft year out of nowhere. A year later, Trevor missed the game and decided to make a comeback, earning a spot with a Tier 2 Junior A team in Brampton. This decision led him to Ferris State University and earning a degree. He joined the real world for two years as a computer programmer, but then soon realized he missed being in the game of hockey. He and his fiancé at the time, took a chance on an unpaid graduate assistant position at AIC. This decision and him paying his dues for two years led him to an assistant coaching job at Army West Point for 6 seasons, before transferring to Canisius College as an Assistant Coach and now in his 8th season as Head Coach. We talked about what he has learned over the years and how he has helped Canisius win an Atlantic Hockey Championship in 2023. His teams are built on culture and 3 important things he looks for in recruiting players: positive, competitive, and team first. Very simple but effective. We also both talked about the “want” and “pride” to play for your college and wear their badge. Something I think is sometimes lost on our athletes today. In the example of Canisius, once a Griff, always a Griff. That means something to the players Trevor recruits. It was really good to talk to Trevor Large and I hope you enjoy!

Key Takeaways: Building a Resilient Port Strategy  The first step in developing a resilient port strategy is understanding the locations of the domestic supply chain along with the location of customers. The ability to use multiple ports of entry is key for shippers because there are unexpected disruptions at ports because Panama Canal issues, labor problems, and shifting regulations at the ports. Shippers must also consider potential labor union issues with both the West Coast and East Coast longshoremen unions. The California Ports are more challenging to service because of AB5 and CARB AB5 refers to Assembly Bill 5, a California law that went into effect on January 1, 2020. It is also known as the “Gig Worker Law” or the “Independent Contractor Law.” AB5 aims to classify more workers as employees rather than independent contractors, CARB emissions refer to emissions of pollutants regulated by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). To build a resilient port strategy, shippers must consider the impact of the Ocean Shipping Reform Act (OSRA) of 2022, which includes the following provisions: Unreasonable Refusal to Deal – A provision that requires that an ocean common carrier shall not unreasonably refuse to deal or negotiate with respect to vessel space accommodation. Demurrage and Detention Billing Requirements – A new rule that seeks to provide more clarity, consistency, structure and punctuality to the demurrage and detention billing practices used by vessel operating common carriers (VOCCs), non-vessel-operating common carriers (NVOCCs) and marine terminal operators (MTOs). Unfair or Unjust Discriminatory Methods – The Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) will define what is unfair or unjust discriminatory methods used by carriers regarding concerns and complaints by exporters and small shippers. Lastly, to build a resilient port strategy, shippers should get the select the right partner – companies that have a comprehensive knowledge of the ports – companies like Port X Logistics and Squall Strategies. Port X Logistics provides drayage to and from all ports and ramps in the USA and Canada. Port X Logistics provides safe and just-in-time truckload services, unique problem-solving for supply chain solutions, worry-free crisis management services, and collaborative and dedicated project management from start to finish. Squall Strategies provide a broad range of services and solutions to help organizations facilitate change, achieve their vision, and optimize performance and productivity. From the first minutes of listening to this week's podcast, you will feel an overwhelming sense of caring and compassion. While in middle school, Marisol's son, Daniel, went on a church trip to Niagra Falls and fell in love. Now, you might think that he fell in love with the beautiful waterfall, but it was the people who impacted Daniel. He saw that beyond tourism, there were people who were truly in need. Daniel felt a strong desire to help. While in high school, Daniel knew he wanted to leave his home state of Maryland and move to western New York to become a doctor. He found a program at Canisius College that offered a program for college and early acceptance to medical school. He was thriving in school until tragedy hit. Daniel was found to have a large cancerous mass in his chest. As soon as Marisol and her husband got off the plane and arrived at that hospital in Buffalo, they were welcomed. They were offered food as well as places to stay. They even had someone offer his apartment for a shower. The caring people of Buffalo simply blew them away. After his diagnosis, Daniel decided to stay and undergo treatment in his new western New York community. He told his family that he wanted to stay there because someday these same doctors would be his teachers in medical school. The care from these people was unlike anything Marisol ever experienced. They never left their side. After Daniel died, Canisius College planned a mass for Daniel. Marisol was asked by the priest, "How many people do you think will come?" Marisol quickly answered, "No more than twenty." Marisol again underestimated this loving community. The church was packed with hundreds of people. I was so struck by the tremendous love and compassion in Marisol's voice as I spoke with her. She said that she wanted to do this episode to honor not only Daniel, but also the people of Canisius College, Roswell Cancer Center, and all of the people of Buffalo, New York. I am sure that if you asked each one of those people about what they did, however, they would be quick to point back to the amazing loving spirit of young Daniel himself.

Sister Julia asks Burhans to comment on what stewardship means to her and what Catholics are meant to be doing in movement spaces related to land justice. They also discuss the complexities of Catholic identity and devotion in a messy Church whose structural sins have caused injustice and abuse. Cinephilia has recently experienced a powerful resurgence, one enabled by new media technologies of the digital revolution. One strong continuity between today's "new cinephilia" and the classical cinephilia of the 1950s is the robust sociability which these new technologies have facilitated. Each activity of today's cinephilic practice - viewing, thinking, reading and writing about films - is marked by an unprecedented amount of social interaction facilitated by the Internet. As with their classical counterparts, the thoughts and writings of today's cinephiles are born from a vigorous and broad-ranging cinephilic conversation. Further, by dramatically lowering the economic barriers to publication, the Internet has also made possible new hybrid forms and outlets of cinephilic writing that draw freely from scholarly, journalistic and literary models.  The New Cinephilia (Caboose, 2022) both describes and theorises how and where cinephilia lives and thrives today. In this expanded second edition, author Girish Shambu revisits some of his original ideas and calls into question the focus in cinephilia on the male canon in the wake of the #MeToo movement and the lack of racial and gender diversity in contemporary cinema. As Dr. Shambu writes:"There is more to the cinephile experience than simply surfing from one link to another in a state of perpetual motion. How does this movement - this daily proliferation of encounters - power one's cinephilia? What special affective charge does this experience hold? In other words, how is the experience of the Internet cinephile affectively different from that of a 'traditional' cinephile who spends little time online?"  In this conversation with host Annie Berke, Dr. Shambu talks working as a Professor of Management while maintaining his profile as a prolific cinephile, explains why auteurism is a "manspreading machine," and offers recommendations on what films exemplify a "cinema of the future." Girish Shambu is Professor of Management at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, where he teaches sustainability and supply chain management. In a dual career as film blogger, critic and scholar, Girish is also the author of The New Cinephilia (Caboose, 2020, 2nd ed.) and editor of Film Quarterly's online column Quorum. His writings have appeared in The Criterion Collection, Framework Journal of Film & Media, and Film Quarterly.  In addition to being a host on New Books in Film, Annie Berke is the Film Editor at the Los Angeles Review of Books and author of Their Own Best Creations: Women Writers in Postwar Television. Whatever happens today, the next presentation will definitely be better. Don't be afraid to ask for support. The most successful educators that I've been around are not afraid to hand it over to their students.  If you can't walk the talk, it becomes really challenging for your colleagues to gain that trust.  When it comes to teacher leadership, it's really just about understanding and deploying empathy and really understanding what's being said and what's not being said in a way that we can support without the bells and whistles of something that isn't attainable.  About Brian Brian Sepe is educator, instructional coach, and consultant. He is passionate about exploring the habits, beliefs, and ideas of people who teach and is driven by the idea that everyone deserves a thought-partner and trusted coach. Brian received his MA from Canisius College and began his work in classrooms as a teacher and coach through the partnership with the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. He spent 17 years in Buffalo, NY as an elementary and middle school teacher and instructional coach. During the day, Brian can be found in classrooms supporting and empowering educators to find their voice and pursue their goals for their own learning and their impact on students. When Brian is not in the classroom, he serves as an adjunct professor at Canisius College and as a consultant and coach for the Western New York Teacher Residency Program. A program where early career educators experience a one year residency with a Master-Teacher in the city of Buffalo, NY.
