I started getting osteopathy treatments in the early years of motherhood and it helped me so much. My body was rather misaligned and in pain after two pregnancies, carrying babies for hours every day and not taking proper care of myself. Osteopathy was one of the modalities that helped me so much on my journey back to prioritizing myself and having my health and energy back. I only wish I had known of osteopathy and its benefits before I had my children. I had no idea that it could have helped with having a more easeful birth and supported my baby and myself with the many common newborn challenges. How good is that? In the most recent episode of The Wild and Well Podcast, I chat with Osteopath Tessa Lang-Larson about how we can use osteopathy to our benefit during pregnancy, postpartum and beyond. Tessa and I chat about: What osteopathy is How osteopathy can support fertility The benefits of osteopathy for pregnancy and birth The importance of proper alignment for birth Doable strategies to support a more easeful birth Why early intervention is optimal but that it is never too late to make positive changes How we can help our children with their anxiety, emotional regulation, and postural development Tessa is a Manual Osteopathic Practitioner. She is a member of the Ontario Osteopathic Association. She graduated from the Canadian Academy of Osteopathy in 2021 and obtained her specialization in Infant Osteopathy in 2023. Tessa is a mom of three. She is also one of the founders of The Well Body Group in the Kawartha Lakes, Ontario. This centre offers a holistic approach to health and offers osteopathy, massage, pediatric physiotherapy, counselling and several other health modalities. Tessa's interest in supporting women and their babies to have optimal health during pregnancy and postpartum began after birthing her first two children. Using osteopathy, Tessa helps moms with pregnancy-related issues such as aches and pains and proper pelvic alignment for an optimal birth. She also helps with many common issues for infants, including lactation and latching, tongue ties, colic and other digestive concerns, and sleep challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic awakened the nation – and the world – to the fact that small-house eldercare homes were substantially safer places to deliver long-term care compared with traditional nursing homes. And while it's now been almost five years since the onset of the pandemic, Canadian health policy makers such as Samir Sinha, MD, continue to raise awareness of the need for the proliferation of models such as Green House homes. As it happens, his appearance on this week's episode coincides with his new report, titled “There's No Place Like Home: Why Canada Must Prioritize Small Care Home Models in its Provision of Long-Term Care,” published by his Toronto Metropolitan University's National Institute on Ageing, where he is director of health policy research. Susan Ryan sits down with Dr. Sinha to discuss his work, the new report, and why he wants Canada to prioritize small care home models in the future delivery of long-term care services. Dr. Sinha, who is also a geriatrician and clinician scientist at Sinai Health System and the University Health Network in Toronto, a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto, and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, has lots to say about eldercare, his desire to help and to work with vulnerable populations.  Listen to the episode to find out why he believes importance of adequate staffing and the role of universal direct care and its relationship to better resident-centered care. TILT Parenting: Raising Differently Wired Kids

Okay, so I'll just say right at the top that my guest today is NOT a parenting expert. He is, however, a neurodivergent researcher, educator, author, and thinker who has some fascinating things to share about helping our kids energize their brains, spark ideas, and ignite action. Dr. Jeff Karp was that young kid who struggled greatly in school because of his learning disabilities, but when a tutor during the summer after second grade asked him this question – how did you think about that? – everything for him changed. He began to be more self-reflective. By thinking about thinking and how he approached learning, he was able to explore and create tools and systems to help him reach his goals both in school and in daily life. Jeff is still thinking about thinking today, and shares his ideas in his fascinating book, LIT: Life Ignition Tools: Use Nature's Playbook to Energize Your Brain, Spark Ideas, and Ignite Action. After I read his book, I wanted to bring him on the show because he embodies so much of what we talk about here at Tilt – encouraging our kids to understand how their brain works, get curious about their own strengths and gifts, and figure out ways to “hack themselves” so they can design lives that allow them to play to those strengths. As a child, Jeff developed ways to navigate school and life that were based on his curiosity, passion, creativity, and connection to nature. Over the years, he's evolved his approaches into LIT (Life Ignition Tools) and wrote this book to share them with the rest of the world.   About Dr. Jeff Karp Dr. Jeff Karp holds the Distinguished Chair at Brigham and Women's Hospital and is a Professor at Harvard Medical School and MIT. He is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, Royal Society of Chemistry, American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering Society, and the Canadian Academy of Engineering. Specializing in bioinspired medical innovation, Dr. Karp leads a research lab focused on harnessing lessons from nature. He has published over 165 peer-reviewed papers with more than 34,000 citations and has delivered nearly 400 invited lectures. He holds over 100 patents, and his lab's technologies have led to the formation of thirteen companies. His notable innovations include a tissue glue for sealing holes in a beating heart, targeted therapies for osteoarthritis and Crohn's disease, smart needles, a nasal spray that neutralizes pathogens, and immunotherapy approaches for cancer. Dr. Karp is also dedicated to mentoring the next generation of bioengineers. He has received multiple mentoring awards, and 30 of his trainees have secured faculty positions.   Things you'll learn How self-reflection and “thinking about thinking” can lead to transformative experiences and strategies for learning and focus What LIT (life ignition tools) is and how they can be used to support positive shifts and movement How being intentional in your actions and reawakening your senses can deepen your experiences What the LEB (low energy brain) dimmer switch is and how it helps regulate energy levels Why being aware of “bothered awareness” can become a motivator How practicing cycling through your senses helps one connect more deeply with the world and tap into your powerful biology   Resources mentioned Dr. Jeff Karp's author website Dr. Jeff Karp's KarpLab website LIT: Life Ignition Tools: Use Nature's Playbook to Energize Your Brain, Spark Ideas, and Ignite Action by Dr. Jeff Karp Jeff's TEDx Talk Insight Outside: Harnessing Nature's Secrets Jeff's TEDx Talk: Turning Failure into Success: 3 principles of Radical Simplicity Switch: How to Change Things When Change is Hard by Chip and Dan Heath Brian Stevenson / Equal Justice Initiative Transcendental Meditation Learn more about your ad choices. We explain how using structural diagnosis as a process of elimination when searching for the root cause of disease can reduce tax on an already stressed body in lesion, decrease unnecessary stress on the liver for metabolizing drugs, and prevent avoidable side effects and dependency on pharmaceuticals for temporary symptom relief.  We invite listeners to think differently about pain and use it as information to guide our intervention decisions, seek osteopathy to prevent larger issues caused by compensations, and allow you to optimize performance in all areas of life!  This episode includes: 1:00 Osteopathy as a point of primary acute care, a spin on your typical Walk-In clinic   2:50 Manual Therapy as a means of healthcare (not just aches, pains and acute care)  3:30 Complimentary forms of care and how their approach treating the patient makes osteopathy more effective 5:25 Changing the narrative from musculoskeletal treatment to addressing an array of idiopathic and allopathic symptoms  7:25 The greatest gift of osteopathy is body awareness and the ability to advocate for yourself  9:30 Case Study: Osteopathy and Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Treating a viscero-somato lesion 15:30 Treatment goes beyond being symptom based to look at contributing factors 15:45 Treating the mental and emotional association with  disease; The mindset behind illness and injury   18:30 Osteopathic intervention over the lifespan— when is the best time seek care?  19:00 How does osteopathy play a role in fertility, conception, fetal and infant development?  21:30 Putting out the fire. In this episode, we sit down with Jacob Simonini, Osteopath and Integration 2023 Keynote Speaker. Jacob is incredibly passionate about osteopathy and shares about his 4:30 am wake-ups and what he does in his routine to be a better person for his family and his clients.   ABOUT JACOB Jacob is an Osteopath whose career began as an Advanced Care Paramedic with many other focuses in the medical field. Jacob was a clinical instructor in the Advanced Care Paramedic program, a preceptor for Advanced Care Paramedic students, and studied and researched alongside a team of physicians involved in prehospital trauma and cardiac arrest examination. Looking for a new challenge and a more in-depth understanding of human bodies, Jacob began his osteopathic career at the Canadian Academy of Osteopathy (CAO). Later, Jacob received a Master of Osteopathic Manual Science (MOMSc) and pursued a professional position as a member of the Ontario Osteopathic Association (OOA). Jacob betters his patients to the utmost ability using osteopathic skills and reasoning. The central idea Osteopathy teaches and what Jacob tries to preach and apply during treatments is that the practice seeks to free the natural healing capabilities of the body. Moreover, each treatment Jacob gives is tailored to every individual and the condition of their body. Due to the inability to truly identify the human body's unique capabilities and never-ending true potential, Jacob continuously pursues the study of Osteopathy with the utmost diligence and dedication to challenging himself, knowing the answer to the body's authentic potential will never be discovered. Denise talks to Santa Ono, PhD, who was recently inaugurated as the 15th President of the University of Michigan, the third of his proudest accomplishments. The first two? Being married for 33 years to his wife Wendy and raising two daughters.  Dr. Ono cherishes his family, but also knows how difficult it is growing up in a family that is less than nurturing. In fact, it can be life-threatening. As a teen, he spiraled into depression, living with parents who had unimaginably high standards and being compared to siblings who more easily met their expectations. At age 14, dealing with an overwhelming sense of inadequacy, he tried to take his own life. Fortunately, he got the help he needed to heal and has gone on to enjoy an exciting and fulfilling life.  As a result of his childhood experience, Dr. Ono is a true champion of survivors. His advice to those who are suffering is to talk to someone you can trust, even if that person is outside your family. He wants everyone to know, “In the outside world, beyond the narrow boundaries of your nuclear family, there are other people who will appreciate you.”   Meeting his wife was a turning point for him as well as starting to go to church. With a trusted partner and a faith community he found the much-needed support and guidance he deserved. He describes himself as the black sheep of his family, and it took him years to understand, “It doesn't matter what others think about you…You are special. Everyone is special. Everyone has different attributes and strengths and gifts.”  These days he meets a lot of perspective students, and he wants them to know that getting into the college of your choice is a lot harder than it was when he was applying! Remember there are a lot of schools, and none are bad. Pick the one that feels right. And if you don't get in, don't beat yourself up.  Life is a marathon, not a sprint, and you can't know who's going to win the race by judging the first few miles. Denise couldn't agree more; getting an education is what's important. As an adult, many people don't even ask where you went to college!  Stay tuned to find out Dr. Ono's two favorite Detroit moments, two favorite U-M moments and the two things he, as a man of many accomplishments, is surprisingly NOT good at.  ***  Santa J. Ono, PhD is the 15th President of the University of Michigan and professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences in the Medical School. A recognized leader in higher education, Dr. Ono's pioneering work in experimental medicine focuses on the immune system and eye disease. Previously, he served as president and vice chancellor at the University of British Columbia. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, the National Academy of Inventors, USA and the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars. In 2022, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Dr. Ono has served on numerous educational, advisory, editorial, and non-profit boards and won many distinguished awards in his field. He holds honorary doctorates from Chiba University and the Vancouver School of Theology. He earned his BA from the University of Chicago and PhD in experimental medicine from McGill University. He and his wife, immunologist and lawyer Wendy Yip, have two daughters.  Denise Ilitch, an owner of Ilitch Family Companies and President of Ilitch Enterprises, has been a part of Detroit's business and philanthropic community for over 40 years.  As a mother, lawyer, entrepreneur, devoted community servant and tireless advocate for women and children, she learned early, from her father, that everyone is worthy of contributing to the world.  Her passion for affordable, accessible, quality education stems from her own experience as a first-generation student, earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, where she currently serves on the Board of Regents, and a law degree from the University of Detroit Law School.  FOLLOW DENISE @thedeniseilitchshow  TO LEARN MORE about all our inspiring podcasts visit https://www.lifestough.com/.
