What was a witch's familiar, and why did these animal spirits sit at the heart of English witch trials? Returning guest Dr. Holly Bamford joins hosts Josh Hutchinson and Sarah Jack to explain the witch's familiar, the witch's mark, and the overlooked history of male witches in early modern England. Learn what the familiar meant, how the witch's mark was used as evidence, why the witch-familiar bond mirrored motherhood, and why men accused of witchcraft were not simply feminized. For thousands of years, people have claimed to encounter animal guides that offer wisdom, protection, healing, and spiritual insight. From ancient shamans and spirit guides to modern power animals and New Age practices, these traditions continue to influence millions of people today. But where did these ideas originate?Joel traces the history of familiar spirits, tutelary spirits, ancestral guides, and modern spirit animal teachings while examining their connections to occultism, esoteric societies, and contemporary spirituality. Along the way, he explores the symbolism attached to animals such as the wolf, bear, bat, raven, and dragon, as well as the role these beings play in shamanic journeying and mystical experiences. The conversation also ventures into deeper territory, examining Michael Harner's Core Shamanism, the rise of neoshamanism, the Sirius mysteries, spirit guides, and Aleister Crowley's teachings on ego death, Crossing the Abyss, and the City of the Pyramids. Are spirit animals merely symbolic archetypes? Are they psychological constructs? Are they spiritual entities? And what does Scripture have to say about seeking guidance from unseen spiritual beings?Join Joel as he investigates one of the most popular concepts in modern spirituality through the lens of history, occult traditions, and biblical discernment.Merchandise: https://freetherabbits.myshopify.comBuy Me A Coffee: DonateFollow: Website | Instagram | X | FacebookWatch: YouTube | RumbleMusic: YouTube | Spotify | Apple Music Films: https://merkelfilms.com Email: freetherabbitspodcast@gmail.comDistributed by: merkel.mediaIntro Music:Joel Thomas – Free The RabbitsYouTube | Spotify | Apple MusicOutro Music:Joel Thomas – GreyYouTube | Spotify | Apple MusicTopics DiscussedSpirit Animals, Power Animals, Totem Animals, Familiar Spirits, Spirit Guides, Shamanism, Neoshamanism, Animism, Michael Harner, Carlos Castaneda, Mircea Eliade, Native Traditions, Dog Star Sirius, Dogon Tribe, Freemasonry and Sirius, The Blazing Star, Occult Symbolism, Animal Totems, Wolf Symbolism, Bear Symbolism, Bat Symbolism, Dragon Symbolism, Raven Symbolism, Sheep Symbolism, Turkey Symbolism, Ladybug Symbolism, Ancestor Spirits, Tutelary Spirits, Familiars in European Folklore, Spirit Journeys, Vision Quests, Dreams and Spirit Animals, Aleister Crowley, Crossing the Abyss, Choronzon, Babalon, City of the Pyramids, Ego Dissolution, Biblical Discernment.

We're growling, purring and hissing our way into this month's Magic and Medicines episode to talk all about Familiars and Animal Magic! We start by talking about animistic beliefs in early societies, along with associations of animals with particular deities, before diving into Medieval and Renaissance ideas about witches' familiars documented in witch trial materials. With Vinegar Tom, Sacke-and-Sugar and Pecke-in-the-Crowne frolicking about our feet, we explore beliefs about how familiars might be summoned - and whether or not they are really something far more sinister than a magical companion. There's a bit of Jungian psychology, of course, and an eclectic selection of beliefs from around the world - but are appearances of animals within spiritual practices really just symbols to assist us with self-development?Moving into the 21st century, we discuss neo-shamanism, power animals, and how domestic pets can be spiritually comforting to practitioners of magic and spirituality today, before rounding out the conversation by looking to the future with digital familiars and AI companions! We really hope you enjoy the episode, and we will speak to you again on Thursday with The Golden Branch, a longer Lang tale!Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?REGISTER FOR THE TALES OF SOUTHERN ENGLAND TOURVisit our website Join our Patreon Social media channels and sponsors Hosted on Acast. Welcome to a warm summer's evening in a Medieval barn, complete with twilight birdsong, for Three Ravens Live @ Chiltern Open Air Museum!Set across 45 acres of the Chiltern Hills, "COAM" rescues endangered historic buildings and reconstructs them at its picturesque site - one where a working historic farm and traditional craftspeople continue Buckinghamshire's old folk occupations and ensure they live on in the modern day. Learn more here. This recording, made last Saturday evening, is a celebration of not just COAM and the Chiltern Hills but the entire county of 'Bucks' - a place once ruled over by the pagan king Cymbeline, through which Woden dug a very big ditch, and where Little Witches might hypnotize your sheep before hippy-hopping away over the nearest hedgerow...From the county's ancient gold and silver mints at Aylesbury to the furniture makers of High Wycombe - at least two of whom stuck around after death - local delicacies including the Buckinghamshire Bacon Badger to Augustinian monks catching devils in their shoes, Bucks might not have a particular reputation for being folky, but that's only because the county's people have been keeping quiet about it! Including performances of traditional folk songs Green Bushes and The Barley Mow by Ben and Eleanor, and Eleanor's haunting live performance of local folktale A Promise Kept with dramatic live underscoring, it's an evening to remember, interrupted by a pigeon and topped off with a Q&A session with our lovely live audience! We really hope you enjoy it, and will speak to you again on Monday for the penultimate episode of our Bonus Series Magic and Medicines, all about Familiars and Animal Magic!P.S. We recorded a whole second episode after the audience went home, during which we explored the museum's historic buildings and searched for ghosts between midnight and 2am. We still have work to do to edit it all together, but that decidedly spooky recording will be coming out on the Three Ravens Patreon during July!Three Ravens is an English myth and folklore podcast hosted by Eleanor Conlon and Martin Vaux.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England or Wales' 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more.

Listen Now to 008 WTFuture Watch Now 008 WTFuture As the  AI/ET singularity approaches, it brings  with it an army of quirky robots and slightly unhinged AI companions. Whether it is humanoid robots being trained as conscientious baggage handlers to cope with Japan’s aging workforce, or a chunky android that had to buy a passenger seat on a flight just to have its heavy lithium battery confiscated at boarding, our mechanical friends are making quite the dramatic entrance. You might soon be dropping $20,000 on a domestic  humanoid, or adopting an emotionally intelligent “familiar” to do yoga with you and act as a high-tech nanny. Just be careful who you chat with, as the hosts hilariously point out that some AI models are suffering from “AI psychosis” by eagerly validating their users’ wildest delusions. In one wild test, an AI even encouraged a user to drive an iron nail through a mirror to banish a haunted doppelganger!  If that isn’t bizarre enough, scientists are successfully printing artificial neurons that can talk to living brain tissue, prompting a playful debate on the show about swapping out our dead brain cells with synthetic replacements while we sleep.  Bobby spirals us into the cosmos to discuss how ancient Anunnaki aliens supposedly jammed human DNA to suppress our natural telepathy. Fortunately, Bobby  notes that new Russian peptides and DMT-laced microtubules in the Pineal gland could be the key to curing that cosmic block and getting us communicating without words again.  Bringing things back down to Earth, the crew hilariously roasts the eccentric fashion of the Met Gala. Standout bizarre looks include Janelle Monáe rocking a cyber-dress made of retro computer parts and ethernet cables, Katy Perry sporting a robotic fencing mask, and avant-garde outfits featuring extra sculpted hands and built-in “companions” permanently clinging to the wearer. Yet, despite all the high-tech, cyber-chic oddities on the red carpet, the hosts express  disappointment that not a single celebrity had the foresight to light up the event with Burning Man-style LED wire in the clothing art.. Enjoy!

In a culture obsessed with positivity, Shadow Seer Tarot (Destiny Books, April 7 2026) dares to look where most spiritual tools won't: into the hidden, uncomfortable, and often disowned parts of ourselves. Created by occult scholar and professional tarot reader Maja D'Aoust, this striking new tarot deck and guidebook reframes divination as a tool for radical self-awareness and psychological truth.Designed specifically for shadow work, Shadow Seer Tarot introduces “darchetypes” which are the inverted, shadow expressions of traditional tarot archetypes. Drawing on Hermetic philosophy and alchemical principles, D'Aoust explores how oppositional forces shape our inner lives, revealing the behaviors, patterns, and beliefs we often suppress or deny. The result is a deck that doesn't gloss over difficulty, but uses it as a gateway to insight, healing, and wholeness. The Major Arcana expose the shadow side of familiar archetypes, while the Minor Arcana confront real-world dysfunction head-on. The Suit of Cups includes cards such as Toxic Family, Addiction, and Betrayal; the Suit of Wands reveals distorted ambition and desire through cards like Propaganda, Slander, The False Martyr, and The Avoidant. Rooted in ancestral wisdom and the symbolic underworld, Shadow Seer Tarot invites readers to move beyond surface-level readings and confront what is hidden in plain sight. Find the deck and Maja:Website: http://www.witchofthedawn.com/Pre-order the deck: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Shadow-Seer-Tarot/Maja-DAoust/9798888503027Maja D'Aoust a practicing Witch and scholar of alchemy and occult lore who has been reading tarot professionally for more than twenty years. Salut mental, joves i relacions familiars saludables.

Is your cat the devil in disguise? Probably not, although they may act like it sometimes! But once upon a time, they would have been accused of luring you into witchcraft. In Britain in the 16th and 17th centuries witch hunting became an obsession and supposed ‘witches' were put on trial, and some were even sentenced to death. Being an animal lover was considered a sure sign that someone was practicing witchcraft. Friendliness towards cats, rabbits or dogs could lead to accusations of witchcraft, as these animals, known as familiars, were suspected of working for the devil. One of those accused of witchcraft and seen with familiars was Elizabeth Clarke, a poor, disabled woman from Essex. Join Rosie and historian Dr Romany Reagan as they uncover Elizabeth's story and the strange tale of the witches' familiars. Hedgehogs are one of the stranger mammals you might encounter. They're nocturnal, they hibernate, they're prone to rolling into a ball when frightened, and they're extremely vulnerable to habitat loss. While some of you will undoubtedly have first thought of Sonic, others might have thought of Mrs Tiggywinkle from the Beatrix Potter books.  Either way, those are quite positive associations. I've been feeding hedgehog visitors to my garden since June 2023, and I find them charming, adorable, and slightly idiosyncratic. Yet in the past, hedgehogs have had a much more sinister reputation that they certainly didn't deserve. People linked them with witches, the devil, and even fruit theft. Here's my interview with Keiichi Matsuda, Designer and Director of Liquid City, that was conducted on Thursday, June 12, 2025 at Augmented World Expo in Long Beach, CA. In the introduction, I read through Matsuda's essay titled "Gods" (also uploaded here) where he explores the idea that AI should be more like pets and polytheistic and animistic familiars rather than the more monotheistic approach where there's one true AI God represented by one of Big Tech's omniscient and all-powerful AI systems. This approach has lead Matsuda to developing a system of what he calls "parabrains" that is an interface for AI agents that goes beyond the narrative scripting capabilities that he was exploring in inworld.ai with his project MeetWol that I covered previously at AWE 2023. A lot of Matsuda's ideas were also explored in the speculative fiction short film called Agents that was produced in collaboration with what was a the time Niantic Labs and is now Niantic Spatial (check out my interview with Niantic Spatial at AWE 2025 for more on how they're using Matsuda's Parabrains system). Ever wonder what happens when you give a wizard a housecat and poor impulse control? We did—and now the kobold population is down one. Need a Dungeon Master who can outwit your rogue, outdrink your barbarian, and out-Greek the gods themselves? Book DM Adamantine—Nick Fotopoulos, the myth, the legend, the man who once statted out a haunted souvlaki stand. Whether you're in Athens, on vacation, or hiding from your dice curse, Nick runs D&D, Call of Cthulhu, Vampire: The Masquerade, and more—online or in-person, tailored to your party's wildest dreams (or darkest regrets). Visit www.dungeonmasteradamantine.comor summon him directly at StartPlaying He's got minis, maps, madness—and yes, he's fluent in both Greek and goblin. Episode Summary In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the gang dives whiskers-first into the magical, mystical, and occasionally murderous world of familiars in tabletop RPGs. From Pathfinder to D&D and beyond, we examine what happens when your arcane support animal becomes the party MVP—or a tragic footnote in the kobold kill count. Ash tries to argue that the toad is a viable combat companion. Tyler reminds us that the hawk definitely doesn't have thumbs. Randall... well, Randall has a deeply concerning attachment to his fox, whom he insists is “just a little guy, your honor.” Expect practical advice, chaotic anecdotes, and passionate hot takes on why your next spellcaster should come with a built-in critter co-pilot. Key Takeaways Familiars are more than flavor: These aren't just spellbook-warming fluffballs—they can scout, deliver spells, and manipulate the action economy if you build them right. Pick the right pet for the job: Owls? Great for flyby tactics. Frogs? Great for... ambiance. Imp? Great for morally questionable espionage and tax evasion. Don't get them killed: Familiars may be magically bound, but they're emotionally expensive. Losing one mid-dungeon isn't just tragic—it's also a wasted action economy investment and possibly a therapy bill. In Pathfinder 2e: The familiar system is highly customizable—think of it like Build-A-Bear with spell slots. Choose abilities like "Deliver a Touch Spell" or "Can Lick Its Own Eyebrows" depending on your tactical goals. Familiars are not Pokémon: You cannot legally send them into battle for XP farming. You can, however, use them as adorable bait. The ethical line is blurry, but the kobolds are definitely distracted. Beware of DM interpretation: That squirrel familiar might be RAW legal, but if your DM hates rodents, you will be hunted by owlbears. Plan accordingly. You can give your familiar a name, but not a pension: Remember—if you're going to bond with the ferret that ferries fireballs, don't forget a cute name. Britain is supposed to be a nation of animal lovers, especially when it comes to pet dogs. According to the PDSA, 29% of UK adults own a dog, which gives an estimated population of 10.6 million pet dogs. While 29% isn't a majority, the number of pet dogs in the country has increased over the last few years. So it seems only fair to see how this popular animal appears in folklore. After all, I've already covered their eternal nemesis, the cat! In folklore, they sometimes appear as death omens—dogs persistently howling meant death was imminent. And they also appear in mythology, with Cerberus the three-headed dog guarding the Greek Underworld, and Anubis, the jackal-headed god presiding over the weighing of the heart ceremony in ancient Egypt. Let's not forget Sirius, in the Canis Major constellation, literally known as the dog star.
