If our behavior plans only kick in after things fall apart, we are already too late. We explore how strong classroom management starts with prevention, not reaction, and how the structure of the environment shapes student behavior. From clear expectations to smooth transitions, we unpack what actually makes group settings run effectively. We reflect on how small proactive strategies, like priming, visuals, and teaching routines, can completely shift classroom dynamics. We also discuss why inconsistent reinforcement, unclear roles, and long wait times often lead to challenging behavior, and what to do instead.Throughout the conversation, we emphasize that good classroom management is simply good teaching. When we build systems that support all learners, we reduce the need for reactive strategies and create more positive, engaging environments. We also share practical ways to teach expectations, reinforce success, and create meaningful motivation so that students are set up to succeed from the start. What's Inside: Why prevention is more effective than reactionHow structure, routines, and transitions impact behaviorSimple strategies to improve reinforcement and engagementMentioned in This Episode:Episode 067: How To Use ABA in ClassroomsReinforcement Systems Starter PackHowToABA.com/joinHow to ABA on YouTubeFind us on FacebookFollow us on Instagram

Episode 68 of the Becoming Centered Podcast expands on the topic of how to design interventions targeted at changing performative surface behaviors versus interventions designed to inspire inner systemic changes in how kids manage their emotions, adopt self-regulating beliefs and values, and consciously manage relationships with others. The key design difference is whether or not a point system, coupon system, token economy, or other forms of behavior contracts track observable behaviors or try to track the kids' efforts at self-directed change. This episode examines the profound differences between behavior-management systems and feedback-incentive systems. On the surface these two structures look similar to one another, both involving kids getting some type of score based on staff observations and then rewarding them for attaining some goal number. However, when designed and implemented properly these interventions are fundamentally different. Behavior-Management interventions track observable behaviors in an attempt to condition improved behaviors. Feedback-Incentive interventions get kids invested in implementing feedback and then making more pro-social choices. One is targeted at specific behaviors. The other is a cognitive intervention designed to engage kids in making real effort to manage their own development. Understanding this difference is key to designing these essential tools for effective residential treatment of children and youth.

Welcome back to another episode of School Counseling Simplified. Today I am interviewing Caitlin, a school counselor and IMPACT member, who brings incredible energy and creativity to her work. In this episode, she shares how she structures her classroom lessons, approaches classroom management, and implements unique strategies that help her build strong connections with students. Caitlin Wagner, is currently an elementary school counselor working in a low income, culturally diverse, title 1 school in Harrisburg, PA. She has been in school counseling for about 5 years. Prior to becoming a school counselor she worked in the clinical counseling setting as a case counselor and milieu manager at a partial hospitalization program for children and adolescents. Besides being a school counselor, she is also a mother of two young children, enjoys sports, and is as creative as possible. When asked what she loves most about school counseling, Caitlin shares that building connections with students and their families is the most meaningful part of her role. Whether in a school or clinical setting, she finds it incredibly rewarding to create a space where students feel safe, protected, and supported by a positive adult outside of their immediate family. She values being a consistent and encouraging presence in their lives. One practical strategy Caitlin uses to strengthen relationships is a get to know you form that she first implemented during a long term substitute position. She now uses this form with every student she works with, beginning in kindergarten. The form follows students as they move through the school, allowing her to remember important details and deepen connections over time. Caitlin also shares how she structures her classroom lessons. She has the flexibility to create her own schedule, which allows her to design a flow that best supports her student population. She is in each classroom every other week, and each class has a consistent day and time so students can rely on a predictable routine. For classroom management, she uses a simple behavior tracking system where she tallies specific behaviors and categorizes them as unexpected, expected, or super expected. She often frames expectations by asking students, how can we be our best effort givers, which encourages reflection and personal responsibility in a positive way. She emphasizes that she loves finding creative ways to connect her lessons to her students' real lives and interests. In describing a typical day, Caitlin shares that her mornings often begin by greeting students as they arrive for breakfast. From there, she may move into a parent, student, or team meeting. Depending on the day and the week, she teaches several classroom lessons and integrates small groups into her schedule as needed. She often ends her day with check ins and check outs for students who need additional support, ensuring they leave school feeling seen, encouraged, and supported. A kobold approaches! He's looking for someone to help him with his social skills to gain greater friends at the taverns. Do you roll for behavior analysis clinical skills? Or attack him with your +2 broadsword? While we've definitely discussed role-playing activities in training contexts, recent years have seen a huge increase in interest in gamification in learning a variety of skills. One area of research is in the use of tabletop role-playing games in therapeutic and clinical settings. But is there any research to back up the hype? This week we're joined by active RPG player clinical user, Danielle Yang, to dive into the research base as we work to answer the question: could the use of RPGs in treatment be considered behavior analytic? Interested in learning more about this topic? Danielle offers a deeper-dive course into the use of RPGs in treatment and skill planning. You can also join her Discord to chat with other RPG/ABA practitioners. And keep your eye out for a bonus episode this month where we'll be demoing just HOW a tabletop RPG could be used in a clinical setting. This episode is available for 1.0 LEARNING CEU.
