Elizabeth McGarry is the Creative Director for York Athletics Mfg. Her career has been built in the high fashion and sportswear world where she’s been a designer & creative for brands such as Veronique Branquinho, Jansen Sports, Nike, Reebok, New Balance, Supra, and many more. She was featured as a panelist on the first ever Her By Bodega co-hosted by Nike this past December, a night of hearing the perspectives of women in streetwear. She launched her own Creative Agency, McGarry & Sons when she became pregnant with her second son and it’s been the go-to agency for reinventing your brand or taking it to the next level ever since. York Athletics has been a client of McGarry and Sons since its inception. Elizabeth decided at the end of last year to at least temporarily close up shop at McGarry & Sons to join her husband who’s the CEO and work at York, full time. The idea being that with the two of them 100% focusing on York they can better balance life and being game changes in the footwear world. I have no doubts about that knowing the two of them. In this episode she shares about her journey from suburban Oregon to high fashion in Europe to queen of Sportswear Design. She also shares about her brave decision to become a mother in her early twenties, what it’s like to close her first company to become a partner with her husband, the importance of raising two boys in a Girl-Power world, and what’s it like to now be a mentor in the industry calls home. It was a beautiful day in North Texas and they decided to take a short ride on the motorcycle, however, a block down the road, a young girl who was texting while driving didn't see the bike and t-boned the motorcycle, with the initial impact partially amputated Caitlin's left ankle. Caitlin was conscious the entire helicopter flight right until she went into surgery. When she awoke, her family stood around her with concerned faces. The nurse came in and said "Oh good, you're awake, we wanted to let you know you're about 4 weeks pregnant," then left the room. Doctors tried to reconstruct her ankle but success was limited. Her 7th surgery would be her last because Caitlin amputated below the knee and went home to a very different life. Caitlin and her husband tried to balance recovery, while helping inlaws that were fighting terminal cancer, and now preparing for a baby the best they could. After many significant trials and a lot of down moments, things changed, and for the better. On April 26th, 2016, Caitlin reached out to a local Crossfit Gym about training her because she hated seeing her legs wither away with atrophy and wanted to be a role model for her daughter. She started working out and finding out she could do more than she ever thought was possible. Caitlin adapted and thrived. Caitlin has now built an incredible community focused on supporting those adapting to significant challenges and they often use sports as a therapy. Caitlin has also competed and won in many sports that there’s too many to list. Caitlin thrives on completion, community, and especially her family. Caitlin states, "I will always find a way to have my daughter with me. I literally gave up a part of myself to keep her safe. I would do it again and again if it made her life better. She pushes me. She reminds me not to settle in this life and that you only get one life. The best thing you can do in your life is try." Episode 34: Now the co-founder and ceo of Boston based athletic company, York Athletics Manufacturing, Mark has had quite the journey getting him to this position. Aside from trying different sports growing up, skateboarding and snowboarding gave him a chance to step away from the real world and be at one with himself and the small community of people he had became friends with. Studying at the University of Vermont gave him insight that there were unconventional ways to making a living aside from the typical 9-5 and if you followed your passion it would work itself out. After finishing school he packed a van with his buddies and headed west to Oregon where he worked at Van’s Skateboard/Snowboard camp as a seasonal help worker, then onto being a part of Nike’s second attempt launch to breaking into the skateboarding industry, Norton Motorcycles as their U.S. brand re-launch team, Puma as an International Product Line Management and then eventually to taking a leap of faith with his own venture McGarry & Sons with his wife Elizabeth. His main focus is now York Athletics and helping spread their message of “fighting spirit” to push individuals to strive in both their mental and physical health. He values his time tremendously and balances both work, family time with his two sons, fitness and anything else that is thrown his way. This episode discusses hard work and remaining humble, quitting his first job after four weeks, the value of controlling your own schedule, the keys to success in business, having a vision of where you’re going, taking a step back to understand an objective, being true to who you are and jumping head first into your interests. — Subscribe to our YouTube Channel for new interviews (and more) weekly: http://bit.ly/2zprpon Follow us on Soundcloud: http://bit.ly/2hcSBws Subscribe to iTunes: http://apple.co/2yE0u9l Follow us on social media: Instagram: http://bit.ly/2j82AHF Follow Bobbbaaaay on social media: Instagram: http://bit.ly/2Ap24ce Twitter: http://bit.ly/2hj6Ljm
