An outdoors themed story telling podcast
The Louisiana Team Trail is tops in the Bayou State in total payout of any bass tournament series and this past weekend found Craig & Taylor Kolb from West Monroe, La taking home the $5000 first place prize. Hear how they did it and more.
College bass fishing is growing throughout the country and in this episode, I talked with the coach of the best team in the state about his team, what he wants in a potential student angler, and how fishing has changed.
One of the hottest things in youth sports these days is High School Bass Fishing. Joey Bray came on to talk about that and how important it is in the lives of these young people
Her vision is simple; be honest, be nice, and have fun. Brittney Naron is first time fishing tournament director in North Louisiana and if her vision and passion stay true, it will not be her last.
Questions. Everyone has them and most of the time, other people are wondering the same things that you are. Any teacher will tell you “There are no dumb questions” but that was before the days of Facebook. I get asked questions all the time and when I log into any social media account that I have, there that same question is on my screen. With deer season approaching I get asked questions daily about set up, supplemental feeding, how to target bucks, and more. That last one still gets by me though lol! So in this episode, I found a few questions on social media and gave my thoughts on them. You might not agree with what I say and that's fine. I also did a thing that we used to do with Bayou Bucks Magazine called “Idiots of The Outdoors” where we'd take a writeup about hammerheads that got in trouble with the LDWF, change the names, fabricate a story around the citations, and just have a laugh at their expense. While I didn't fabricate anything about the illegal deer that was killed in August, I did have a few questions of my own! And if you like this style podcast, drop me some questions on the Antlers & Hicks Facebook page and I'll do another one when I get a few good ones that I can expound on…..just don't ask how to kill monster deer because I'm still trying to figure that out myself!
In this episode I got with Mike Dampier and we discussed everything Wise Eye Trail Cams.....You'll love it!!!
Listen to how The Huckabay family grew a dream into a reality.
I caught up with Jake Ormond on Sunday and heard about this fish and it was a good little visit. Also, if you have a kid that likes to fish, you're going to want to listen to this because Jake actually just started a clinic where he teaches kids different levels of fishing skills. I know the record is cool but the coolest thing about this story is how he's out here teaching young people the lessons that he's learned.
When people saw the Facebook post about a 12 lb bass being caught on Lake Darbonne in Farmerville, people began to talk. Tonight Sam tells the story of the fish and how it all came to be. Hope you enjoy. Also, like and share this podcast with your friends.
The 2023 regular season is done and it's time for the championship on Lake Darbonne in Farmerville, La. In this episode Todd Wolff, Greg Hicks, and Glenn Miers discuss the season, the championship, and a few changes that will happen in the 2024 season. Special thanks to one of our sponsors, Clawdaddy's in Sterlington, La for the use of one of their party rooms for this to happen.
This past weekend Jarred Fitch and Curtis Goodling beat the brakes off everyone one at the ARKLA Team Rumble on The River held on the Ouachita River in Monroe, La. I got one of them to talk to me tonight (I'll get you on here one day Curtis). Jarred Fitch is a great fisherman, dad, husband, and friend and tonight we hear some of his background coming up, his history fishing, and how he prepped to win the ARKLA event in Monroe. Trust me, it's not how you expect! Also, give us a like and comment on iTunes and Spotify.....these go A LONG WAY for podcast distribution.
The ARKLA Anglers of the Year standing are tight and tonight we got with the leaders, John Burroughs & Derek Davis. We talked about the trail, the stress of being at the top of the standings, and even a little bow hunting. Hope you guys enjoy and give us a rating on iTunes and Spotify.
David Hanson's personality is as big as his truck and airboat combined. He's a great guy who does all he can to help folks in need and right now, the people living on Bayou Desiard in Monroe, La are asking for his help. A nusense alligator has been spotted and it's not a baby! I've known him almost a year now and I knew two things; he'd make a heck of an interview and he's going to get his target gator. In this episode we talk about everything under the sun and we laughed more than anything. Great guy and a great member of the community. Hope you guys enjoy and be sure to give us a rating on iTunes and Spotify.
If you hunt deer in Louisiana, you've probably heard of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). The state had it's first confirmed case in early 2022 and since then we've added 11 more cases. Tonight, Johnathan Bordleon drove all the way to my house.....in the poor folks side of Sterlington, La (Ouachita City, Union Parish La. to be exact) to talk about CWD. This is an informative podcast that every deer hunter will need to hear. Hope you guys enjoy it and please give us a rating on iTunes and Spotify.
Everyone has struggled to close a chapter in life. This one is to encourage those who are struggling to close one chapter and prepare for the next one.
If you've never experienced catching fish in a hoop net, do yourself a favor and find someone to take you. In Louisiana, fishing from nets or traps is a heritage that kept a lot of families fed back in the day....even today. I got with a guy tonight who is carrying that heritage on into our generation and is capturing that life on camera and sharing it on his YouTube channel "God's Country Hunting & Fishing". I hope you guys enjoy Bradley Smith.
President Theordore Roosevelt once said, "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far". I can't help but think of that statement when I think about Allen Anders. He doesn't speak much, he's not flashy, but when he goes fishing, he's a big stick. He and his dad Richard fish the local bass tournaments in North Louisiana and do quite well. They even beat Ben Millican at Caney in January. Millican just won the Bassmasters Open on Toledo Bend, so to me, that's a big deal. Allen came on this week to talk about his year and share some insight on how you can do better yourself. Hope you guys enjoy!
"Everything that happens in your life, has been waiting to happen since the beginning of time" and if that's the case, life timed this one perfectly. I met GK and the rest of the "Bow Bro's" on the Sitka Course at the Total Archery Challenge event in Broken Bow Oklahoma this past Saturday and we all hit it off right off jump street. Tonight, GK and I broke down the shoot, the gear, and how life just is sometimes. Hope you guys enjoy.
Buddy Hollis has been around. Amlost 83 times to be exact. And in those near 83 years he's managed to tally more Tom turkeys than most people have seen. In this episode, Mr. Buddy tells us some of his best stories from the field. Hope you guys enjoy.
Baby faces but killer instincts. When I first saw these two, I overlooked their abilities because of their age. Needless to say, I was wrong, and crow doesn't taste very good. Hagen and Gage fish with the West Ouachita Fishing Team in in the High School Fishing world and are tops in their class. They've also been competing against some of the best bass anglers in North Louisiana in some of the biggest tournaments around and are definitely holding their own. This is a good one y'all.
Wesley Miller is such a good interview that you can just let the conversation flow where it may. We covered ditch pickles, what's been going on in his life, new crappie regs on Lake Darbonne, and spawning crappie. You're sure to find something you like in the interview. Hope you guys enjoy.
Meet Steve Lucas. He's the tall guy in the back on the right side of the photo who's not wearing a hat. I first met Steve back in 2011, the year before I became a Buckmasters certified deer scorer and I can count on probably 2 fingers how many times I've seen him wear a hat. He can't stand to score deer with a hat on because the bill is a distraction. It's not like Steve doesn't like hats, he's just a guy who's absolutely comfortable not wearing a hat, even when he knows he's going to be at events where everyone wears a hat. Steve is comfortable being himself even when he may not be exactly like everyone else. It's hard to find a non hat guy amongst hat guys. Being who you are is hands down a man's strongest asset. Someone that others can appreciate and respect because they know where you stand. Listen to this and ask yourself the question; Am I a non-hat guy amongst hat guys?
Perception is reality with Sontus Mitchell, especially when it comes to bass fishing. His strong presence and fishing confidence has been created through humble beginnings and a style of fishing where modern technology helps but isn't a must have. Sontus came on tonight to discuss his background, how he fishes, and how he and his partner Walt Stevens won the first ARKLA Team Tournament Trail event that they ever entered. Hope you guys enjoy.
I've had this on my heart for a while now. A podcast aimed towards men....but that's all I knew. I didn't know the name. I didn't know the length. I didn't know the exact content. I just had it on my mind. Last weekend while taking notes in church, every single bit of the unknown hit me all at once. I quickly jotted it down and left it there in my notes. Later when I came home, I wrote the script for it and recorded it. The first person to ever hear this was my oldest daughter, Addi. She couldn't sleep so I put her to use. It got her approval, which was huge. I later ran it past several friends, all from different backgrounds. Again, approval. Ready to go right? Not quite. I still had hesitation and I couldn't understand why. Then this morning I realized that I hadn't ran it past Him and that's where the hesitation came from. But see, that's the cool thing about God; sometimes you don't even have to ask Him and He'll still tell you what He thinks. This morning our pastor spoke on honor and talked about honoring things more than your family and how that can kill your relationships. While driving home, I felt Him saying, "Alight Greg Hicks, I need you to take one more step out of your comfort zone. You can do this."......So here we go. Also, you'll hear me mention Cameron Hanes in this podcast. I like his style and I like his beliefs, there are however certain things about him that I don't agree with. If you listen to this podcast, you'll hear why. Maybe that's a future episode in the making.....Being able to have respect for someone and disagreeing with them at the same time. This may be a one and done thing, who knows. Each Man to Man episode will be less than ten minutes long. No music. No ads. Just my thought on issues that men face today.
Chris Patton came on this week and friends; we covered some ground. Get ready for one of the best interviews I've been a part of. Hope you enjoy.
The ARKLA Team Tournament Trail is one of the fastest growing bass fishing trails in North Louisiana. Craig & Taylor Kolb are the AOY (Anglers of the Year) for the trail and chatted with me about their experience last year. Hope you guys enjoy.
The ACT (American Crappie Trail) has a new format that uses the total weight system, and this weekend was its maiden voyage on Lake Darbonne in Farmerville, La. Lamar Bunting is one of the hottest names in the Pro Crappie world and he sat down with me after the tournament to talk about how he set up for it and how successful he was in his first tournament of this style. We also covered a few questions from some Facebook followers. Hope you enjoy!
Matthew Rogers is a crappie fishing guy from way back and is well versed on today's fishing technology. But on this episode, we focused on the average fisherman who might not have the latest technology and how these people can be successful on the water.
Keaton Standstipher is a pro crappie fisherman as well as the emcee for the 2023 ACT Tour. He and I talked about the tour in this weeks podcast and the new format that it will follow. Hope you enjoy.
With hunting season drawing to an end, sportsmen nationwide will soon be shifting gears to fishing. But before you jump out on the water, there are somethings you'll want to do first. Gary Calloway is an outstanding service tech at Ludwig Marine in Farmerville, La., as well as a fishing tournament veteran and he took the time to talk about how to get ready to get after those slabs. Hope you guys enjoy.
The story of a young man who has done what all hunters, young and old, dream of; owning your own property and killing a monster buck from the same ground. Hope you guys enjoy.
As an offical Buckmasters scorer, I hear it every year; "It just kind happened". This deer is no different but what it proves is something that I've said for a long time; When it's your time to kill a good deer, it's just your time. I really think you guys will enjoy this one.
If there ever was a hunting podcast where two men got on an extremly emotional level, it's this one. I will forever have a connection with Joe Simmons because of this story, the deer, and what Joe Simmons has been through. You're going to love this one.
This deer is everything anyone could hope to bring home from a hunt. Ben White scouted, he hunted, he prepared, he did everything a person should do to bring home a trophy like this deer. Listen to his account of how everything unfolded the day after Thanksgiving 2022. You're going to love it.
Two 180" deer on the same day in Area 2? This can only mean one thing......the rut is upon us. Listen to Jordan tell the story on his big 181" Louisiana moster.
Lee Comer is a guy that a lot of people in Louisiana can relate to. Just a regular guy, with a regular job, that loves to hunt, and goes when he can. However, something big separates him from most people......like 182" big. Listen to Lee talk about the story behind his big buck named "Illinois" You're gonna love it.
This episode is everything that hunting encompasses. Most hunters love the animals we chase as much as Justin loves this deer. Listen to his account of what took place in order for him to be able to meet his friend face to face. Y'all enjoy.
On October 14, 2022 Crickett Collins of Gilbert was able to take down a nice Morehouse Parish buck she named Hercules. The story she tells is amazing and the size of the deer is as well. Y'all give a listen for yourself and don't forget to like and share this podcast with your friends.
Mr. Terry Alvis of Downsville La. killed a nice buck with his bow and here's the story. You definitely need to hear this one.
If you guys are like me, you'd love to kill a deer and catch a mess of white perch in the same day. John Harrison took time to tell us just how to get started on catching big crappie in the winter. Hope you enjoy this one as much as I do.
This episode was really fun to record. Trey and Tucker are a father/son team fishing some of the largest crappie tournaments in the country......and they do quite well in fact. Also keep in mind that Tucker is in the 4th grade! Give a listen to these two talk about their success.
The Louisiana archery opener was a success for several hunters around the state, but one really stood out from the rest. Tyler's deer is big AND is still in velvet, a rare occurrence in some parts of the state. Listen in on how the hunt went down. Trust me, the man has some luck and some patience. If you like this podcast, please like and share this with your friends.
Dan Preaus is as good as it comes at getting on mature bucks early in the Louisiana season. In this episode we talked about how those hunts went down and what made him successful. Hope you enjoy.
In this episode I talked with Wesley "Big Sasquatch" Miller of Dubberly LA. Wesley is an accomplished crappie fisherman and crappie guide in North Louisiana (as well as a Registered Nurse). He's getting ready for the Crappie Masters National Championship in Grenada MS.
I went out of my comfort zone on this episode and talked fishing with a local guy who's got 2 National Champion titles under his belt. We discussed his life growing up and how he got started fishing in large crappie tournaments. One of my favorite episodes so far.
Glynn Harris is an outdoor writer from Ruston, LA who's been bringing the outdoors experience to audiences for 50 years. In this episode we'll hear his story, how he got started, and other interesting things about his life.
This episode I talked with Adam Sanderson of West Monroe, LA. Adam is an outdoorsman in every sense of the word as well as an accomplished YouTube creator. He self-films his hunts and is dedicated to his craft. We covered a lot of topics, so you guys enjoy.
Following a scare from South Arkansas last hunting season, parts of North Louisiana were faced with some changes to their hunting season. A few months later found the state actually having it's first confirmed CWD case ever. In this episode we talk everything that is CWD in Louisiana.
