An Engine for Growth: How Canadian Tire Corporation's World-Class Capabilities Fuel its Future Success
Actor Greg Hicks has played many leading roles at the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company over the last forty years, as well as starring on the West End and appearing on screen in films including The Mercy and Snow White and the Huntsman. He is about to perform a one-man show, The Dream of a Ridiculous Man, based on a short story by Dostoyevsky, at the new Marylebone Theatre in London. BTG Editor David Chadderton spoke to him a few days before it opened about the play and how much more of himself he will be presenting to an audience than in other roles he has played. He also spoke about some of his past roles, including performing naked in Romans in Britain for a role that nearly ended him up in criminal court immediately followed by appearing in full costume and mask for Peter Hall's famous Oresteia (he credits Hall as his mentor at the National in the 1970s). The Dream of a Ridiculous Man, adapted and directed by Laurence Boswell, is at Marylebone Theatre in London from 21 March to 20 April 2024. Joining us for a wide-ranging interview on how a more than 100 year old retailer stays relevant is Greg Hicks, CEO of Canadian Tire. We start with some history, tracing the evolution of one of North America's most successful retailers from its modest beginnings as a tire shop to today's diverse portfolio of store formats, powerful private brands, and financial services, comprising over 1,700 locations. While Canadian Tire is rather unique in its iconic position in Canadian culture and dealer-based business model, their embrace of "connected retail" and how they stay customer-centric through an intense local focus contains incredibly valuable lessons for all retailers regardless of product focus or wherever they might be located. Greg, who was named the "Canadian Retailer of the Year" by the Retail Council of Canada earlier this year, also shares some of his key leadership principles, including how to balance pursuing short and long-term priorities. But first, as usual, we kick-off with a fast-paced review of the week in retail news, including mostly depressing earnings reports from a diverse set of retailers including Dollars General, American Eagle, Saks, and the brand formerly known as Restoration Hardware. In stark contrast to last week's episode, Tractor Supply escalates its commitment to a winning course of action by picking up the pace of its store openings. We close wth more disruption in the disruptor space as Draper James, the Reese Witherspoon founded clothing brand, gets acquired. Our interview with TSC's Hal Lawton. “Greg, Greg, we are under attack,” were the last words from Ambassador John Christopher Stevens to his deputy Greg Hicks over the phone from Benghazi office shortly after the attack began around 9:30 p.m. “If you don’t get here we are going to die,” the radio operator at the tactical operations center in Benghazi pronounced on the radio from the improvised consulate. Glen ”Bub” Doherty was part of the quick reaction force consisting of eight U.S. military or former military that left Tripoli in the rush to help rescue the Stevens and his colleagues at the consulate. His task was the same as the task of the 21 CIA personnel at the CIA annex one mile from where Ambassador Chris Stevens’ and the others came under attack. Glen Doherty’s Libya assignment was supposed to be his last for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). He had been offered a more suitable job in the private sector that would have allowed him to get out of the line of fire. Written by Eric Sof. In this episode his best friend, Sean Lake, joined the crew to talk about he and BUBs childhood dreams growing up as snowboarders, to how BUB became a SEAL, served on a SEAL team, was tragically killed in Benghazi, and how Sean was supposed to use the money left to him by BUBS to throw a big party, but how his friends legacy lives on through The Glen Doherty Foundation and BUBS Naturals.
