"I love this phrase you've used - explain ourselves to ourselves." Joanne Joseph sits down with best-selling author Alka Joshi for a rich, expansive conversation on Six Days in Bombay. Together they unpack why Alka only came to novel writing later in life, the mother whose real story became the seed of The Henna Artist, and the painter Amrita Sher-Gil, "the Frida Kahlo of India", whose bold, uncompromising life inspired the character of Mira. They talk about the responsibility of writing historical fiction with care, the meticulous research behind Alka's immersive worlds, and the layered ways women in her novels travel outward to find their way back to themselves. It's also a wider conversation about heritage, colonisation, and why literature matters as a tool for explaining ourselves to ourselves. Alka Joshi's new book is Six Days in Bombay. Inspired by the life of Amrita Sher-Gil, it follows nurse Sona as she carries a cryptic note and four paintings across a Europe teetering toward war, in search of the truth about the woman who left them in her care, and about herself. Alka Joshi is the best-selling author of The Henna Artist and the Jaipur Trilogy. Her books have been translated into nearly 30 languages. Joanne Joseph is a TV and radio presenter, producer, and writer, and the author of Children of Sugarcane and Drug Muled.

Perice so vseeno imele določen ugled, saj so bile tudi pomembne prenašalke kulturnih vsebin; z rednimi stiki z mestom so v vaško okolje namreč prinašale novice, navade in novosti. Early Life and Cultural BackgroundBorn in Kenya in 1969, Alka moved to Leicester as a toddler. Raised in a strict Hindu household, she grew up with defined gender expectations: girls were encouraged to pursue education only as a precursor to arranged marriages within their caste. Despite an early interest in crime and pathology sparked by Agatha Christie novels, Alka initially followed a conventional path, working in insurance for nine years. The Turning Point: Defiance and DutyAlka's entry into the police was a profound act of personal rebellion and courage. Facing an unwanted arranged marriage to a man living abroad, she chose to break the engagement. This decision, coupled with her desire to join the police—a profession her family deemed unsuitable for a woman—resulted in her being asked to leave her family home and a long-term estrangement from her father, who was himself a traffic warden. In 1997, without knowing where she would live, Alka posted her acceptance to Leicestershire Police.Career Highlights and ChallengesAlka joined the service in 1998, training at Ashford during a time when Asian female officers were a "rarity". Her career spanned several diverse roles:Frontline Policing: She served in rural areas like Ashby and Coalville, where she faced significant racial abuse from the community.Specialized Units: She spent time in the Youth Offending Team, which allowed her to balance work with raising her children.Detective Work: Alka eventually became a detective, working in child abuse investigation, serious and complex crime, and a secondment in Counter Corruption, which she described as her toughest role due to the emotional weight of investigating colleagues.Mutual Aid: Near the end of her career, she assisted in Merseyside following the tragic murders of three children.Legacy and RetirementThroughout her 27-year career, Alka balanced the "heavy lifting" of being a mother, wife, and professional. She remains a staunch believer in meritocracy, refusing to join identity-specific police associations and instead focusing on her skills as an investigator.Upon retiring, she transitioned into her "second vocation": sports safeguarding. She currently works with the Leicester City Football Club Academy, aligning her professional expertise with her lifelong passion for sport. Despite the personal sacrifices, Alka maintains that she would do it all again "100%"The Story & Inspiration#BreakingBarriers#CulturalIdentity#ResilienceStory#WomenWhoInspire#PersonalGrowth#OvercomingObstacles#CourageousConversations#TrailblazerPolice & Detective Life#PolicePodcast#ThinBlueLineUK#DetectiveWork#WomenInPolicing#LeicestershirePolice#LawEnforcement#TrueCrimeCommunity#BehindTheBadgeCulture & Representation#SouthAsianExcellence#BritishAsian#RepresentationMatters#Leicester#ShatteringGlassCeilings#EmpoweredWomenCareer & Transition#CareerPivot#SportsSafeguarding#LCFC#SecondAct#ProfessionalDevelopment#WorkingMomsNiche & Catchy#FromPatrolToPitch#DefyingExpectations#DetectiveAlka#PodcastSpotlight Hosted on Acast. By Adam Turteltaub Chart auditing may not be the sexiest part of healthcare compliance, but it plays an important role in discouraging Medicare fraud and catching problems early. Madhavi Perumpalath, Director-Physician Practice Compliance at Northeast Georgia Health System and Alka Kumar, Compliance Director and Privacy Officer at Resolve Pain Solutions, explain that CMS provides good guidance to healthcare providers, such as diagnosis and procedure codes that are appropriate to bill for. Take advantage of it. Embrace proactive auditing, they advise, to help identify issues and ensure the quality of the claim before it goes out the door.  It can also prevent both over and under billing. How frequently should you audit? It depends on several factors, including the size of your organization, regulatory requirements, resources available and the overall risk environment. And, remember, you can't audit everything. Instead, they recommend developing an annual audit plan focusing on the high-risk areas, but also doing some random samples of other areas as well. This dual approach maximizes efficiency and minimizes overlooked issues. Listen in to learn more about how to conduct the audits and what to look for. Listen now

The pressures of her hectic city job alongside parenting and caring for family members took its toll on both her mental and physical health. Alka knew she'd let things go too far and needed to make a change. But even after Alka began exercising in high intensity gym classes, she developed plantar fasciitis (foot pain while walking.) Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) centers on the plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I of England, the arrest and execution of Mary, Queen of Scots (Elizabeth's cousin), and King Phillip II of Spain's attempt to topple Elizabeth and install a Catholic monarch on the English throne, which culminates in England's defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. The film also portrays the complex emotional triangle involving Elizabeth, the English statemen, soldier, and explorer Sir Walter Raleigh, and Elizabeth's lady-in-waiting, Beth Throckmorton, whom Raleigh marries and has a child with. (The film depicts Elizabeth as enamored with Raleigh). Directed by Shekhar Kapur, from a script by William Nicholson and Michael Hirst, the film is a sequel to Kapur's Elizabeth (1998). The cast includes Cate Blanchett (Queen Elizabeth I), Clive Owen (Walter Raleigh), Geoffrey Rush (Elizabeth's spymaster Sir Francis Walsingham), Samantha Morton (Mary, Queen of Scots); Abbie Cornish (Beth Throckmorton); and Jordi Mollà (Phillip II of Spain). In addition to dramatizing this critical and memorable period of English history (albeit with some notable historical inaccuracies), the film provides a window into important and timely legal issues around torture, trial for matters of state, and piracy in Tudor England.  I'm joined by Alka Pradhan, a leading human rights attorney, adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, and Tudor history buff. Come and listen while Host Christina Spoletini interviews women who are helping others rediscover themselves and build confidence. #DivasThatCare  Alka Bailey helps people beautify their homes/gardens by creating unique handpainted items on unusual surfaces. You can find her artwork on Alka's Garden on Instagram or Facebook  Alka was asked to be in a craft show, but didn't know what to paint to sell. Her oldest daughter stated that she should paint all the rocks that she had lying around(they were in her gardens). Well she painted a few and liked painting on them so much, that she became obsessed with painting on rocks. She has painted stones the size of her thumbnail, the largest rock was more than 3 feet across.  Sometimes she sees a picture in the rock itself which she paints as quickly as possible. Others she paints the background and it can take up to 6 months to paint the rest of the picture.  She creates through her fingers what she envisions in her mind's eye (third eye). Quite often she meditates prior to designing the piece, especially if it's a commissioned piece.  The energies of the stone, or rock, or wood including her own energy which infuses the finished piece to bring joy and love.   She has started painting on raw wood slices or pieces of wood with watercolours and acrylic.  All  her pieces are sealed for indoor or outdoor use.  Alka's Garden started in 2016, attending craft/vendor shows. She really enjoys showing my artwork at the shows.
