Visi jāņotāji no abiem koriem, kaimiņi. Viens pats. Apmeklētāji netika pieņemti – neviens no mums.

Our next guest is the Chef and Founder of Về lại which is currently a Vietnamese and Lao pop-up filled with themes of nostalgia and homestyle cooking. Coming from hard-working blue collar immigrants, Alvis had a strong work ethic, and despite falling in love with food and cooking at an early age, he didn't immediately venture into the culinary arts. Microbiology, food science, and time spent at the soon to be closed Heritage Restaurant became formative stops along the way to forming Về lại. Norman Alvis is a Sacramento, California native. He started out as an athlete running cross country. At the same time he rode a bike to and from school. After riding a friends race bike he was smitten. He say it was the adventure, the sensation of being on the bike and having something of his own that drove him. He won his first race solo. He says he did very well from the beginning. 1981 he got his first look by the junior national team by having the teams coach spot him at a restaurant. He won the junior national time trial championship that year. After the 84 Olympic trials he was invited to the national team as an amateur. In 1987 Alvis won his first elite amateur national time trial championship. Then, in 1988 he made the Olympic team time trial team. A funny story he told me was his time racing the Tour of Morocco. If you get a chance ask him about the race. Eventually he turned pro for 7-Eleven and went to France. Alvis thanks Leonard Harvey Nitz for giving him Jim Ochowicz's number. His first race with the team was the La Jolla GP which he won. His time in Europe was productive and hard. He would race the Tour, the Giro several times, and classics such as Paris Tours, Giro di Lombardia to Liege-Bastogne - Liege while riding for 7-Eleven and Motorola. By the 1995 season he was back in the states racing for Saturn. He would win the U.S. Pro Championship the same year. In 1997 Alvis won the Australian Sun Tour. In 1998 he retired from pro racing. Upon retiring Alvis went to school and got a degree in finance and marketing. He also started a family raising six kids. Alvis still had the competitive drive so he started racing masters races. He continues to win and has one of the best Instagram pages called "Crit Master." What you may not know is that he has multiple attempts at the hour record. But he actually still holds the hour record on an outdoor track. Cool thing though, he's planning to try it again.
David Culshaw is an author who has been an A.O.C. member for over 67 years having joined back in 1955. He is a lifelong fan of the Alvis marque which led to his writing the book titled, Alvis Society – A Century of Drivers which chronicles every model and lists every chassis number ever produced along with owners. The Alvis car has always appealed to a buyer who wants to make his mark in the world and the list of owners ranges from politicians to stage and screen actors, sports figures, Kings, and even a serial killer. This book has been published by Veloce Press 100 years after the very first Alvis car emerged from the production line in Coventry.

I am so excited and honored to have author Marcie Alvis Walker on the Still Becoming Podcast. Marcie is the creator of Black Coffee with White Friends, as well as the newsletter Black Eyed Stories. We discuss her new book Everybody Come Alive: A Memoir in Essays. I have been a fan and an avid reader of Marcie's work for years now, and I always want to know what Marcie thinks or has to write about everything. Her writing is so layered, complex, honest, beautiful, powerful, and it will change you. I know it has changed me. Her book is available to order now, and I can't recommend it enough. In this powerful and beautiful conversation, Marcie tells us more about her incredible book and some of her own stories she writes about in it. We talk more in depth about all the stories that are missing, and that every story is holy. Marcie tells us about getting "all the stories," so that we really know about what it truly sacred, and how we have been taught only certain stories belong - which couldn't be further from the truth. We also talk about Marcie's family, and the power of language. I am still thinking every day about the way Marcie describes the power and the importance of language, and how language disrupts power. For Women's History Month, we present a conversation full of the hurts and joys, laments and hopes of a sacred Black story. Marcie Alvis Walker, the woman behind the popular Instagram account Black Coffee with White Friends, joins Be the Bridge founder and podcast host, Latasha Morrison, for a dynamic conversation. They discuss being Black in predominantly white settings, the white backlash that comes after Black gain, and the effects of generational trauma. This conversation will be beneficial to all listeners. And Latasha brings a great reminder for white listeners: “It's an honor when we invite you into these sacred conversations. When we invite you into our pain and our stories, and a lot of times that's for you to listen, and to ask yourself - ‘What is God trying to say to me in this?' ‘What is God speaking?' ‘What am I missing?'” Host & Executive Producer - Latasha Morrison Senior Producer - Lauren C. Brown Producer, Editor, & Music - Travon Potts Transcriber - Sarah Connatser Quotes: “It's really important for us to see that it's not about what the room looks like. It's about what our humanity looks like in that room.” -Marcie Alvis Walker “I believe that what was happening in 2020 was part of revival.” -Latasha Morrison “It's one thing to be made equal; it's another thing to be treated equal. It's one thing to be made equal, and then treated equal; it's another thing to have equity. It's one thing to be made equal, treated equal, have equity; but it's a whole nother thing to have retribution and reparations and reconciliation - all which are biblical.” -Marcie Alvis Walker “When you're able to connect culturally it's just a beautiful thing.” -Latasha Morrison Connect with Marcie Alvis Walker: Her Website Instagram Twitter Black Eyed Stories Substack Preorder Everybody Come Alive: A Memoir in Essays book by Marcie Alvis Walker Connect with Be the Bridge: Our Website Facebook Instagram Twitter Connect with Latasha Morrison: Facebook Instagram Twitter Not all views expressed in this interview reflect the values and beliefs of Latasha Morrison or the Be the Bridge organization
