CareQuest Institute for Oral Health is a national nonprofit dedicated to creating an oral health care system that is accessible, equitable, and integrated. Learn more about how their advocacy, philanthropy, research, and education are creating a better oral health system at carequest.org/turnonthelights The separation of oral and physical health has created a significant crisis in the US, leaving millions without access to affordable dental care despite its crucial link to overall well-being. In this episode, Melissa Burroughs, Director of Public Policy at the CareQuest Institute for Oral Health, discusses the historical reasons for this divide and its modern consequences, highlighting how poor oral health exacerbates conditions like diabetes and heart disease. She details the critical coverage gaps in Medicare, state-variable Medicaid adult benefits, and the VA system, explaining why dental care is often the most unaffordable service and outlining the profound equity issues affecting vulnerable populations. Melissa addresses the concerning trend of efforts to remove fluoride from public water systems and the potential negative impact of proposed Medicaid cuts on already fragile dental benefits. She also underscores that millions of Americans cannot access oral health care primarily due to cost, making it the number one medical service people report skipping. Tune in and learn why integrating oral health is vital for a healthier America and what policy changes could bridge the access gap! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

With supplies in their packs and an increasingly detailed map, the explorers travel further through Perpetua's western continent. While some learn more about local nature and culture, others stumble towards larger truths. A star descending from the heavens. A fleet across the blue. The striking of a clock… the ringing of a bell… This week on Friends at the table: Perpetua Prelude 04 PERPETUA PRELUDE - GUIDE Factions - [PPFC] Not much is known about these groups because the demo cuts off so early, but between some dialog, that one cutscene, and some screenshots, here's what I think is going on with them: Grande Sonnerie [FCGS]: That's the big city at the end of Prelude. It's a big city but also maybe a kingdom? Not sure if it has other cities and stuff, but it definitely has the four big districts (including the root magic school). Seems like a traditional fantasy kingdom, but I don't know if it has a king or a princess or what. The Elevana League [FCEL]: This is where Arley is from originally. It's like a bunch of elven (stupid) city-states (cool). One for each element/god. Not clear if they get along or not, but they do have those special warrior mages. The Dragon Watchers [FCDW]: The demo basically starts with these guys. They have both dragon “squires” and dragon “scryers,” and I know they worship the dragons, but it's not clear what that means. I hope they can ride them and that you can recruit one, but we'll see. The Holy Protectorate of Placidia [FCPP]: From what I can tell, Duriel, the one arena-based god city, is tied to this faction. Maybe they worship the gods? I remember an interview where someone said that the full game has a whole story about a prophecy, so maybe they're tied to that. The Hundred Burroughs [FCHB]: Even though Prelude sometimes says “burroughs” and sometimes says “burrows,” I'm saying BURROUGHS. Harlow sucks but he isn't a mole or something, so why would it be “burrows”? Anyway, it's all schools and stuff over there. Again: they say it's magic but neither of the two characters we've seen from there (from the Prelude or in the screenshots) actually USE MAGIC so wtf? Valte, the Winged Empire of the Blue Hour [FCVL]: These guys are my favorite. Why? Three reasons: 1. They can fly. 2. They have cool military stuff. 3. They're basically the ONLY ONES actually DOING ANYTHING about stuff. Yeah, yeah, they're probably the “bad guys” but the coolest characters are. The Passikan Remnants [FCPR]: There's that one water dungeon in Prelude that's tied to them, but that's IT. I don't know what their deal is at all, but it's probably cool because the dungeon is cool. The Ennead [FCEN]: Okay so I think those are the “The Ennead” which is a word that means “a group of nine gods.” I'll be honest, I TOTALLY missed them but JesseSetGo pointed the word in the background in Duriel out on the forums, and I went back and looked and saw it not only there but also in Grand Sonnerie, so it's not just the same church as the Placidia or whatever. Sometimes, you can see a stickup coming a mile off. Other times, they come in the dressing of a movie with lots of awards and credibility. But Maff might've just played a blinder here in The Year of the Stichup. Naked Lunch (1991) was a challenging and experimental adaptation of William S. Burroughs' novel, helmed by Canadian director David Cronenberg. The film's production was marked by its complex narrative and the integration of surreal, often disturbing imagery, which reflected Burroughs' unorthodox storytelling style. Cronenberg, known for his work in body horror, worked closely with the cast, including Peter Weller, who portrayed the lead role of William Lee, to create a psychological and disorienting atmosphere. Filming took place in various locations, including Toronto, where the filmmakers utilized practical effects and innovative set designs to create the film's nightmarish world. The production team also employed a mixture of animation and special effects to bring Burroughs' hallucinatory visions to life, making Naked Lunch a visually striking, albeit polarizing, adaptation of the cult novel. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where reality is blurred and paranoia runs deep, Naked Lunch follows William Lee, a writer who becomes entangled in a web of drugs, conspiracy, and bizarre creatures. As he tries to escape his hallucinatory nightmare, Lee finds himself in the midst of a deadly game involving corrupt agents, mysterious organizations, and a sinister plot to control the world. With his mind unraveling, Lee must navigate a twisted labyrinth of absurdity and horror, where nothing is what it seems, and the lines between fantasy and reality are dangerously thin. Prepare for a journey into madness that will leave you questioning what's real and what's not.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

The new book, "There Is No Place For Us" features the stories of five Atlanta families struggling to find and keep safe, stable housing. These working families represent the country's "hidden homeless," people who sleep in cars or extended-stay motels but aren't tracked by government homelessness counts. Atlanta-based journalist Brian Goldstone, who authored the book, talks more about his book and Atlanta’s growing homelessness crisis. Nannie Helen Burroughs was an educator, a suffragist and a Black labor activist. Her life’s story and legacy are the focus of the new book, “Nannie Helen Burroughs: A Tower of Strength in the Labor World.” The book's author, Dr. Danielle Phillips-Cunningham, is an associate professor of labor studies and employment relations at Rutgers University. Regis and Function's first mix in over 10 years is a unique paean to Silent Servant, heavy on unreleased material. When it came time for RA to compile our Albums of the 2010s, one record with a tauntingly limited availability of 500 copies was never in doubt: Sandwell District's era-defining 'Feed-Forward'. Encompassing Karl O'Connor (Regis), Peter Sutton (Female), David Sumner (Function) and Juan Mendez (Silent Servant), Sandwell District had the underground in a vice grip for over a decade. The collective imploded in 2013, with Sumner and O'Connor's relationship appearing beyond repair. And yet, an unlikely second phase is here, featuring imminent comeback LP 'End Beginnings' and their return to the RA Podcast after 16 years. In 2023, the trio of Function, Regis and Silent Servant had been performing and laying down new material before the latter's shock death last January. It's in the shadow of loss that this unique mix was forged. Founded in 2002 as a spiritual sister to seminal Downwards, Sandwell truly began to hit its straps in the late '00s, as shadow-stalking cuts sliced through clubland orthodoxy like a switchblade. In parallel, the label's artwork—a noir recombination of Burroughs cut-ups, DIY zines and arthouse amour that Silent Servant made his own—helped fortify a movement which placed an aesthetic premium on grit, grain and sadism. By the early 2010s, this fixation on the dark arts had utterly permeated the mood inside techno's masonic temples. Labels like Blackest Ever Black, Stroboscopic Artefacts, Avian and Modern Love were in their pomp, razorwire legends like Severed Heads and Chris & Cosey benefited from second winds, and it was briefly a jailable offence to not have a press photo in black and white. 'Feed-Forward' was the exceptional coronating statement. RA.978 features a stack of unheard recordings from each of the trio, as well as close allies Stefanie Parnow and Tropic of Cancer, while also gathering many of Silent Servant's all-time favourite songs, including Psychic TV, Grace Jones and Galaxie 500. It's a strikingly vulnerable listen, one without many parallels on the Podcast. We're glad to run it. Read more and find the tracklist here: ra.co/podcast/978

CW: This episode discusses cinematic sexual violence.Violet Lucca, the author of the new monograph David Cronenberg: Clinical Trials, returns to the podcast from Brooklyn to discuss the book and his controversial 1991 adaptation of William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch starring Peter Weller and Judy Davis, filmed in Toronto standing in for 50s New York and Morocco, recreated by Cronenberg's longtime production designer Carol Spier in a former General Electric plant in Toronto's west end.We discuss Cronenberg's lifelong connection to Canadian cinema and the city of Toronto with digressions on Videodrome, The Dead Zone and The Fly before grappling with Naked Lunch, which is less of a literal film version of the novel and more a meditation about the life of Burroughs and what it is to be an artist in general. We also discuss Cronenberg's cinematic explorations of paranoia and conspiracy theories, and his relationship to the queer artistic community in Canada reflected across his career, even if he's always identified himself as a heterosexual man.And we (briefly) contrast Naked Lunch with the new Burroughs cinematic adaptation, Luca Guadagnino's Queer starring Daniel Craig, which we feel misses the boat on how to adapt Burroughs for the screen.Over 30% of all Junk Filter episodes are only available to patrons of the podcast. Tangier was a magnet for artists, writers, musicians, and political exiles throughout the mid-20th century, amongst them the writers Paul Bowles and William Burroughs From 1924 to 1956 the city operated as an international zone under the joint administration of several European powers. This status created an environment of legal ambiguity, which, combined with the city's strategic location at the crossroads of Africa and Europe, made it a haven for those seeking escape from the constraints of conventional society The zone had a sense of lawlessness and freedom, attracting a diverse mix of expatriates, spies, smugglers, and avant-garde intellectuals. The city's permissive attitude towards drugs, homosexuality, and radical political thought made it a particularly alluring destination for members of the counterculture. Composer and writer Paul Bowles, settled there and drew members of the Beat Generation to the city to be inspired, to complete their projects and to live the Moroccan dream. Few lived in human dialogue with the locals, operating rather as economically priveleged colonial bohemians William Burroughs' time in Tangier in the 1950s deeply influenced his novel Naked Lunch. Burroughs saw the city as a place where the constraints of Western morality could be discarded in favor of a more experimental and uninhibited lifestyle. He christened it THE INTERZONE Although the Tnagier International Zone officially ceased to exist in 1956, its mythos lived on in literature, music, and the enduring image of Tangier as a place where the world's outsiders could find a home Multimedia artist and curator Abdelaziz Taleb, director of The Arab Media Lab Project has taken a deep dive into the Interzone - both its reality and its myth, exploring the blurred line between the two. He came to the Bureau to talk about it, the often untold influence of Moroccans on the Beats, and the mystery of Tangier. Hear how the writers who lit up the literary world, Ginsburg, Burroughs and Kerouac, shaped 20th century culture

Justin Kuritzkes is the very talented writer behind Challengers, the Luca Guadagnino love triangle topping all sorts of end-of-year lists right now. The film is a tennis drama that declared game-set-and-match with critics and audiences alike on release in April, becoming a pop culture sensation in ways usually reserved for franchise films. Steeped in the messy wants and desires of three complicated characters, it's the sort of film that doesn't often dominate discourse. But that didn't stop Challengers becoming a phenomenon whose influence altered fashion, music, memes and more in 2024.Which for most writers would be enough achievement for one year thank you very much. But Justin's 2024 didn't end there. Queer – also directed by Guadagnino – is a William Burroughs adaptation that hit cinemas this month. The film stars Daniel Craig as William Lee – an American expatriate living in 1950s Mexico City who becomes obsessed with a younger man and goes on a quest into the jungle in search of unlocking drug-induced telepathic communication. Both films bear the hallmarks of a storyteller insistent upon bringing deeply nuanced explorations of flawed people searching for connection into multiplexes. In the double-bill episode you're about to hear, breaking down in spoiler-filled detail both acclaimed films, we discuss the overlaps between Challengers' carnal chaos and Charli XCX's Brat Summer, and what both say about this moment in the culture. We get into the tragic real-life death of Burroughs' partner, killed by the famed author in an supposed accidental shooting, that lends uncomfortable context to the story of Queer (and that Justin threaded into the movie). And you'll also hear his thoughts on whether both of these films could be a bellwether moment for movies. In a year that saw franchise after franchise struggle for critical applause and box office might, does the success of a movie like Challengers suggest that an appetite might be growing again for original stories? Now there's an exciting thought to carry into 2025.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Subscribe, Rate, & Review on YouTube • Spotify • Apple PodcastsThis Week's GuestWhen, suddenly, the barrier between “imagination” and “reality” evaporates as our familiar notions of here/there, now/then, in/out, and other/self twist up into a ball of non-Euclidean spaghetti, whom better to help steer the course through these “turbulent philosophical waters” than Richard Doyle, aka “M0b1ius”, Edwin Erle Sparks Professor at Penn State Center for Humanities and Information in the College of Liberal Arts? After his postdoctoral research at MIT in History and Philosophy of the Life Sciences, Doyle wrote The Wetwares Trilogy, a sequence of books on the history of information biology that reached its climax with one of my favorite reads of all time, Darwin's Pharmacy: Sex, Plants, and The Evolution of the Noosphere. He is also the author of The Genesis of Now: Self Experiments with the Bible & the End of Religion and Into The Stillness: Dialogues on Awakening Beyond Thought (with Gary Weber), and has taught courses on “aliens, Philip K. Dick, nanotechnology, rebellion itself, ecstasy, Sanskrit rhetorical traditions, Burroughs, basic argumentation, The Non Dual Bible, and everything in between.” I discovered Doyle through his appearances on my first favorite podcast, Erik Davis' Expanding Mind, and in the thirteen years since he has shown up for me time and time again as mentor, friend, and inspiration. And since this project is, ostensibly, a way of training my own language model to reflect the wisdom of my friends and colleagues, I can think of no one else I'd rather prime the batch. It is my great privilege and honor to be able to have him as the first guest in this series, as a way of of helping set the tone for everything that is to come…LinksRichard Doyle's faculty web page and publicationsLearn more about this project and read the essays so far (1, 2, 3, 4).Make tax-deductible donations to Humans On The LoopBrowse my reading list and support local booksellersJoin the Holistic Technology & Wise Innovation Discord serverJoin the private Future Fossils Facebook groupHire me for consulting or advisory workChapters0:00:00 – Teaser0:03:36 – Episode Intro0:12:44 – Introducing Richard Doyle0:29:33 – The Ego as Inflammation0:33:58 – Practicing Care in The Planet-Wide Makerspace0:48:30 – Digital Connection vs. Embodied Connection0:55:46 – Psychedelics as Training Wheels for Transhumanism1:02:43 – “Storytelling” Isn't A Professional Service (??)1:05:25 – Techniques for Reclaiming Attention & Finding Peace1:15:22 – Meditation as “The Halting Problem”1:17:30 – Beyond The Limits of Science1:22:17 – AI-Enabled Extraction vs. AI-Enabled Abundance1:38:40 – Closing RemarksReflectionsMuch of tech ethics discourse concerns itself with whether humans are “in the loop” or “out of the loop” — whether people get to call the shots. But there is always more than one loop. Most of the things our fleshy bodies do are local decisions made before we ever become conscious of them, if we ever do…and yet evolution clearly found some value in reflection, self-awareness, reflex inhibition, and the will that quiets maladaptive impulse. Widening our frame to see the way that humans are always-already intertwingled with our ecosystems, we can see ourselves as made of interference patterns between nested feedback loops — as focal points of conscious agency dependent on and acting in a massive, endlessly surprising web of automatic processes. For as long as we've been people we have never really “called the shots” but rather cultivated our response-ability within a cosmos made of entities whose otherness and mystery remained persistently opaque…and ritualized ways to live amidst this mystery in full recognition of the unity from which we cannot isolate ourselves. And this is only one of indefinitely many valid ways to understand the human. Like the telescope and microscope before them, language models reveal fresh perspectives on familiar landscapes. We do not need to leave our solar system to find “strange new worlds” awaiting us in places as familiar as our own minds and bodies. While most of the conversation lately seems to be about the power these new maps confer and whether it can be distributed more evenly, AI provides a new set of affordances for mystics for the transformation of our consciousness that can dissolve our wicked problems in a higher logical order. “What can I do?” becomes “Who am I?” and yields endlessly evolving and kaleidoscopic answers that provoke ongoing inquiry. To see the ways in which we are, as individuals, not just “connected” but precipitate as aggregates, in fields of constellated data, prompts a figure-ground reversal in which selves no longer hold their primacy as ground truth of our being, but show up last as we make inferences and draw stories from unbroken and inseparable experience.Something fundamental changes when we shift to seeing “human” and “non-human” as two stable patterns of recursive self-perception emerging from a single fabric of unfolding possibility: we find the opportunity to question what we're trying to achieve, to notice the ungrounded and conditional reality of narrative, to operate on our own “source code” and adjust our goals accordingly. If we can find the curiosity to ask ourselves if our fears and inadequacies really help us live the lives we want, we can follow it upstream to where each moment offers fresh, distinctive landscapes in which to explore and play and learn. In doing so, we rediscover vast and potent creativity. Instead of asking whether we can do more, we can ask “What do we want to do, and why is that desire substantiated?”This kind of meaning-making isn't just a luxury but an essential aspect of all efforts to survive and to succeed. The best way to get unstuck is to orient ourselves and take a different tack. We all know something isn't working. It's time to ask if, maybe, this is due to “user error” and the answer doesn't lie in new technologies, but in the simplest and most ancient truths available. We cannot control the world because we are the world — and, this entails a sense of radical responsibility to play our way into more well-adapted stories, models of the world we hold with humor and humility as they carve channels in the space of shared attention that coordinate us into futures good and true and beautiful. In other words, the magical technologies inspiring so much religious fear and fervor are both Towers of Babel and fingers pointing to the Moon. They are weird, unprecedented, and sublime — and they are business as usual on Planet Earth, where we have always come awake in medias res amidst unfathomable changes and unknowable intelligence. Recognizing this, we gain access to deep continuity and the place from which we can, at last, engage the question of “What Now?” with discipline and limber rigor suitable to the profound complexity we face.Digital technologies are psychedelic. We've been on a bad trip. It's time for us wiggle out, dream better, and allow a more capacious, plural, and harmonious humanity to take the oars together in whatever novel wonders may arise — to neither “give way to astonishment” nor let our fears steer us into the rocks. Humans On The Loop is an investigation of how awesome it could be, right now, to fully give in to the paradox, and notice how its knots untie in hyperspace, and revisit all our looming crises with more presence, grace, and understanding — and more lucid (dare I say, productive?) questions. One of those questions is how to apply the lessons of the living generations of psychonauts and psychedelic therapists to the vertiginous information and attention vortices in which we now found ourselves swirling. Maps of the World Wide Web look very much like brain scans of the amped-up functional connectivity between ordinarily inhibited brain regions in a psilocybin tripper. When the walls come down — when every node has edges with each other node, and average path length drops to one — how do we prioritize? What paths do we decide to cut through the emergent “intertwingularity”? Which apparitions do we honor, and which do we ignore? (And how?) Some familiar tropes that we might use to guide us: “test your drugs”, “get grounded”, “set and setting”, “integration counseling”…MentionsGenerated by NotebookLM. The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: The BurrowCrat Coalition of Democrats and mostly non-conservative Republicans led by Rep. Dustin Burrows continues to make enemies. Now Governor Abbott stresses that the Speaker needs to come from within the GOP caucus by majority vote and the Lt. Governor agrees. Burrows and crew walked out before the vote total for the nomination changed to three-fifths on the third vote. Walked out and went and did a deal with the radical Left Democrats.Clearly power-hungry insiders like Burrows and his BurrowCrats don't care but momentum for what's right grows: Over 100 Republican County chairmen are now backing David Cook for House Speaker.Rep. Stan Lambert, a BurrowCrat at the moment, said yesterday in a packed forum in Abilene that there will likely be another House Speaker candidate emerge before the vote in January. It wasn't covered by the media but it is in the transcript of the forum:“So what's the outcome gonna be? I don't know. There's very likely to be another candidate emerge before January the 14th that maybe the majority of the Republicans would support cuz they've got to get to number 53. The 53 is the number that they've got to get to and neither Cook nor Burroughs was able to achieve that on Saturday.”And yet Burrows is now using the Speaker-elect title. It doesn't sound like his own team agrees! Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.Border news and much more in today's edition including: Texas professors self-censor on campus, survey found – we all self-censor every day. We should always be in a state of expectation. In this powerful message, Ps. Sean explores what living in healthy expectation looks like.
Tonight, we'll read excerpts from the book “Fresh Fields” by John Burroughs, published in 1896. The main section we will read is titled “At Sea”. In "Fresh Fields," Burroughs takes us on a journey through his travels and observations of the natural world, both in America and abroad. This collection of essays showcases Burroughs' keen eye for detail and his deep appreciation for the beauty and complexity of nature. John Burroughs was an American nature essayist, active in the U.S. conservation movement. Burroughs accompanied many personalities of the time in his later years, including Theodore Roosevelt, Henry Ford (who gave him an automobile), and Thomas Edison. — read by 'V' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus!
