Stephen Ormond, known as The Rock during his fighting career, knows all about The Rocky Road in boxing. A teenage elite champion who comes from a boxing dynasty, he's related to the legendary Spike McCormack on his mother's side, while his father and uncles were all champions in the ring as well, iconic fighting Dubliners all. He boxed as a pro for over a decade, with 33 fights in all, winning the WBO European, IBF inter-continental and WBU world titles, and was never, ever in a dull fight. Ormond was a well-schooled, aggressive boxer-puncher who shared the sparring ring with Conor McGregor but never once s***-talked another fighter to get to where he wanted to go. Ultimately, a world title shot passed him by, but he's determined to reach the holy grail, this time as a trainer. That's led to the opening of Stephen Ormond Boxing down at the Colosseum Gym in Kylemore, where we met for a chat about his ideas on what makes a successful pro, and a look back at his best night yet in boxing. We're also joined by his old mate Luke Keeler, a year on from his first appearance on the show, while there's also something of an exclusive towards the end of the episode as hype man supreme, cutman and uisce guru Mark Kennedy lends his thoughts on Ormond's potential as a coach, and irish-boxing.com's effervescent roving reporter Matt Meehan gives his take on the events of the day. With our review this week of THE BELIEVER'S HEAVEN, we here at Boys' Bible Study have now reviewed the entire trilogy, which also includes IF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU, WHAT WILL HORSES DO? and THE BURNING HELL. All three films feature fiery narration by Estus Pirkle intercut with colorful, dramatic vignettes by the Ormonds. THE BELIEVER'S HEAVEN is unique in the trilogy for focusing on the pleasure of heaven rather than the tragedy of earth or the horrors of hell (but don't worry — we still get enough of those in this piece to keep our interest piqued.) “In My Father's House there are many mansions,” says Estus Pirkle quoting John 14:2. He then proceeds to take us on a tour through a real mansion to hype us up for the delights of heaven. This gleeful literalness drives the rest of the film, which includes lots of time spent filming Christians with physical disabilities to prove to non-disabled viewers that they should be excited to take on “glorified bodies” in heaven. However, the close-up shots on the deformities of disabled people remind the viewer that the Ormond family first made their mark in vaudeville and carnival entertainment, where the disabled were frequently displayed as sideshow “freaks”. By titillating the viewer at the expense of the disabled and in the name of religious education, the Ormonds show their talent as “mondo” genre filmmakers, a style marked by a moralizing tone that barely disguises the actual purpose of selling the audience on morbid or lurid imagery. The contrast between the exploitative tone of the Pirkle/Ormond films and their seemingly sincere moral message makes THE BELIEVER'S HEAVEN, and the rest of the trilogy, one of the most fascinating watches in all of faith-based film. Tom welcomes R.C. Williams and Juliana Ormond to the show to discuss the implementation of the Sound Money Act. Deriving authority from Article 1, Section 10 of the US Constitution, the Act will enable states to mint their own gold and silver currency, thereby reducing dependence on federal fiat money. To guarantee successful implementation, the precious metals must be declared as legal tender and be functional in transactions, just like debit cards. Williams and Ormond foresee Florida, Texas, Utah, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Missouri, and New Hampshire as the states most likely to accept the Act. The states' chief financial officers will manage the system, with technological support from tech firms. The Sound Money Act, backed by precious metals, presents wealth protection and growth opportunities. They caution this new system should complement, not replace, conventional fiat currencies. This precious metal-backed system has prime potential to inhibit unlawful financial activities and money laundering due to improved transparency and accountability. Moreover, it provides a check on government towards greater restraint over their fiscal activities, deterring overspending and empowering citizens to have enhanced control over personal finances. Successful implementation of the Sound Money Act requires strong legislative backing. In Florida, this backing is accomplished by winning support from key political figures. Challenges are foreseen, but the procedure is expected to boost state sovereignty and monetary freedom. The states' rights, as defined by the 9th and 10th Amendments, empower them to independently manage themselves and secure citizens' interests, even when facing federal intervention. The group anticipates that if a significant number of states adopt gold and silver as legal tender, it could press the Federal Reserve into critical discussions leading to ideological and practical dilemmas. This could eventually address the debt issue. To help citizens voice their opinions on the matter, the group has initiated the Watchmen Action platform to provide resources required for engaging in research, narrative development, and legislative outreach. The aim is to rally leaders toward valuable public changes despite facing opposition from those entrenched in the current economic structures. This one has been a long time coming! We have been wanting to cover the work of Ron Ormond since we first stepped into the cave, many years ago! He has been slowly gaining more recognition recently and a box set of his films has been released. Starting out on stage, he moved into films and had a successful run making exploitation movies primarily for drive-in audiences. After an accident in a small plane which he survived, he became a devout christian and redirected his efforts toward religious and anti-communist propaganda. This guy really does have the goods and the two films we look at on this episode REALLY prove it! We start off with "White Lightnin' Road" from 1967. Filled with moonshiners and stock car racers, this one really hits the sweet spot. There is romance, action, deceit and murder in this one and it's all wonderfully over-the-top yet still extremely captivating. There is some sort of bizarre magic going on that makes this stuff work...it's really something you have to see to believe. We follow that with 1968's "The Exotic Ones" where a strip club in New Orleans captures a swamp monster and displays it as a way to attract a crowd. The lighting is lurid, the strippers are badass, the criminals are ruthless and it's sheer perfection all the way down! If it's not obvious at this point, we LOVED both movies and can't wait to watch more from Mr. Ormond, especially some of the later, religiously-focused stuff! We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. Ormond by Maria Edgeworth audiobook. Maria Edgeworth was one of the most popular writers of her time, a sharp and witty observer of society manners, and a favorite author for Jane Austen. “Ormond,” published in 1817, is a “coming-of-age” novel, tracing a young man's development as he approaches the age of majority. When we meet him, Harry Ormond has his “heart in the right place,” but is unsettled of character, naïve and impulsive. The central issue is: “What kind of man will he become?” In part, Harry is influenced by the books he reads: Fielding's “Tom Jones,” Richardson's “Sir Charles Grandison,” and works of the French Enlightenment. More important, however, are influences from the company he keeps, much as Prince Hal in Shakespeare's “Henry IV” takes shape as a reflection of the people around him. As an orphan, Harry had been adopted by Sir Ulick O'Shane, a man of society, full of subtlety and strategies, who exploits his public trust for private advantage (a practice known at that time as “jobbing”). Harry also spends time with Sir Ulick's cousin Cornelius, a Falstaffian figure of hearty good cheer and eccentric rural lifestyle. (He enthrones himself on a tiny island in an Irish lake, calls himself the “King of the Black Islands” and nicknames Ormond “Prince Harry.”) Later, Harry follows Cornelius's daughter to Paris, where he witnesses the glamorous dissipation of French society in the years before the Revolution. This novel explores the challenges of bringing together apparent oppositions: reconciling promised loyalty with assertion of self, Anglo-Irish landlords with their Irish tenants, Catholics with Protestants, and the impulsive heart with the rational head. “Ormond” is named in the reference list “1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die.”
