Fraud in the trucking industry has become a major issue for carriers, brokers and shippers alike. The Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) estimates that freight fraud costs supply chains over $1 billion annually in the US. The pandemic, market-participant anonymity and ease have helped spark a new wave of cargo theft. In this Talking Transports podcast, Michael Caney, chief commercial officer of Highway, joins Lee Klaskow, Bloomberg Intelligence senior transportation and logistics analyst, to share his insights about how the company’s technology-based platform is fighting abuse in the industry. Caney also talks about types of fraud, the importance of knowing your customer, double brokering, dispatch services, rising costs for truckers and how stumbling into the freight-brokerage industry led him to Highway.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In 2003, an East Texas couple adopted three young Russian children. Over the years, there were countless red flags for child abuse, especially against the oldest child, Alexey, who began running away when he was 12. He ended up on the doorstep of the Roosevelt House, an emergency shelter, assessment center, and residential care facility for children removed from abusive situations, usually by CPS. The home's founder, Diane Black, had no idea that her battle to save Alexey and his sisters, Anastasia and Svetlana, would upend life as she knew it.Diane detailed the story of Alexey, his sisters, the Roosevelt House, and the egregious systemic failure of the Texas child protection system in a book called Dead Dog Road: A True Story Into the Dark World of an Abused Child. In this episode, you'll hear my recent conversation with Diane about the appalling ways CPS and law enforcement failed Alexey, Anastasia, and Svetlana, and much more. This is Episode 176: Dead Dog Road.Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/STLCpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. This week, 3PL Live welcomes Michael Caney, Highway's chief commercial officer and a freight broker industry veteran. He is introducing an innovative carrier identity engine to combat fraud within freight brokerage operations. The highway platform provides single sign-on using passport login technology similar to that used by major tech and financial companies - plus, it uses VINs alongside insurance records for further verification accuracy. Carriers can use this secure access point to easily view available loads, protecting brokers from being exploited by bad actors along the way. 3PL Systems Team
President Theordore Roosevelt once said, "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far". I can't help but think of that statement when I think about Allen Anders. He doesn't speak much, he's not flashy, but when he goes fishing, he's a big stick. He and his dad Richard fish the local bass tournaments in North Louisiana and do quite well. They even beat Ben Millican at Caney in January. Millican just won the Bassmasters Open on Toledo Bend, so to me, that's a big deal. Allen came on this week to talk about his year and share some insight on how you can do better yourself. Hope you guys enjoy!

The biggest names in Hollywood and Broadway recorded for AFRS during the war years, The American Forces Network can trace its origins back to May 26, 1942, when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). The U.S. Army began broadcasting from London during World War II, using equipment and studio facilities borrowed from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The first transmission to U.S. troops began at 5:45 p.m. on July 4, 1943, and included less than five hours of recorded shows, a BBC news and sports broadcast. That day, Corporal Syl Binkin became the first U.S. Military broadcasters heard over the air. The signal was sent from London via telephone lines to five regional transmitters to reach U.S. troops in the United Kingdom as they prepared for the inevitable invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Fearing competition for civilian audiences the BBC initially tried to impose restrictions on AFN broadcasts within Britain (transmissions were only allowed from American Bases outside London and were limited to 50 watts of transmission power) and a minimum quota of British produced programming had to be carried. Nevertheless AFN programmes were widely enjoyed by the British civilian listeners who could receive them and once AFN operations transferred to continental Europe (shortly after D-Day) AFN were able to broadcast with little restriction with programmes available to civilian audiences across most of Europe (including Britain) after dark. As D-Day approached, the network joined with the BBC and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to develop programs especially for the Allied Expeditionary Forces. Mobile stations, complete with personnel, broadcasting equipment, and a record library were deployed to broadcast music and news to troops in the field. The mobile stations reported on front line activities and fed the news reports back to studio locations in London. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Entertainment Radio Stations Live 24/7 Sherlock Holmes/CBS Radio Mystery Theater https://live365.com/station/Sherlock-Holmes-Classic-Radio--a91441 https://live365.com/station/CBS-Radio-Mystery-Theater-a57491 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dr. Kenneth W. McFarland (1906-1985) was a teacher, public speaker, author, and conservative pundit. He was born in Caney, Kansas, received a bachelor’s degree from Pittsburg State College of Kansas in 1927, a master’s degree from Columbia University in 1931, and a doctorate from Stanford University in 1940. Eventually, he became the superintendent of the Topeka, Kansas school system, and was the superintendent when the Topeka Board of Education was sued in the landmark anti-discrimination case Brown v. Board of Education (1954). After Brown v. Board, General Motors and Readers Digest, among others, hired him as a speaker. Many of McFarland's speeches were recorded and published as LPs by the Edward M. Miller and Associates, Inc. label from Grand Rapids, Michigan, which published LPs by many different conservative speakers. This LP is a recording of a speech McFarland delivered to a Rotary International group in about 1966. Among other things, he criticizes the Supreme Court, singling out Justice Douglas, and questions the legitimacy of the civil rights movement. Welcome to our 43rd episode of The Make America Grape Again Podcast, where we visit a state we should have visited Sooner: Oklahoma. Our featured wine in this episode is the Glitz, a sparkling Norton and Pinot Gris blend sold by Whirlwind Winery, located in the town of Watonga. This particular wine was not made by the crew at Whirlwind--coming from a second, now defunct winery, but the owner, Brad Stinson thought this wine was fascinating enough to be worth saving from oblivion and thus acquired all remaining inventory. We've met Norton before in our very first episode of the podcast, so it is fascinating to see this grape in an entirely different mode. According to the Oklahoma Historical Society, by the late 1800s and early 1900s, Oklahoma had thousands of acres of domesticated table and wine grapes. The acreage of grapes planted in 1907 and 1908 were estimated to be 3,700 and 5,425, respectively, which happens to be about ten times more than is planted in the state of Oklahoma today. The first report on varieties of grapes that were suitable for the state was released as early as 1894 by what was then known as the Oklahoma A&M College. (A later publication detailed other aspects of a whopping 175 varieties!) The oldest documented winery in what is now Oklahoma was opened in 1898 by Charles Fairchild, though I could not find any information on the name of this winery. In 1926 the USDA and Oklahoma A&M co-published Grapes in Oklahoma. Yet the end was near as both the Dust Bowl and the introduction of Prohibition into the state's constitution sounded the death knell for the Oklahoma wine industry. The industry slumbered until 1982, when Cimarron Cellars in Caney, Oklahoma opened. A survey in 2006 showed that growers in the state preferred red grapes, which took up a majority of the acreage. Vitis vinifera-derived varieties, in turn accounted for 80 percent of all plantings. V. vinifera varieties are the most widely grown in Oklahoma because they are generally considered the premium grapes for winemaking; however, observation and research has shown most of these varieties are highly susceptible to cold damage and fungal infection. In the 2006 survey interspecific hybrid grapes made up less than 15 percent of vines, American species grapes approximately 7 percent, and muscadine grapes less than 1 percent of the total. Today, the state of Oklahoma has about 52 different wineries, and ranks thirty-first among the fifty states in terms of wine production. There is also one AVA which extends into Oklahoma: the Ozark Mountain AVA. The sixth largest American Viticultural Area in terms of total size, this appellation covers Northwest Arkansas, southern Missouri, and extends into the northeastern part of Oklahoma. This bottle was graciously donated to the podcast (along with several other vintages) by the winemaker and part owner of Whirlwind Winery, Brad Stinson. Some of these bottles will be covered in later episodes. Thank you once again!
On this week’s Open Mic Spotlight podcast, Barrett Maury and Dakari Kelly of Caney Village drop by the studio to talk with Heather about the ways in which the band has changed over the years, how their parents have influenced them as musicians and why it’s always good to have a locater app on your phone. From the band’s earliest days as a folksy outfit following the work of bands like First Aid Kit and Lily & Madeleine to their most recent incarnation as a rockier, more electrified version of its former self, they’ve always concentrated on distinguishing real emotion from false sentiment. And when Maury and Kelly (minus band member Chris Blankenship) sit down to reinvent Tom Waits’ “Goin’ Out West” or rail against the inequities of Wal-Mart, there is still that need to find the honesty behind their words and music. After talking a bit about how their parent’s helped to guide them in their musical studies during their formative years – Maury’s mother was a fixture in a handful of local bands when he was younger while Kelly’s father was a member of Chattanooga funk-soul band The Malemen – Maury and Heather get into a discussion about the merits of Creed and how she once lost a drummer due to her dislike of the Scott Stapp-fronted band. Eventually the talk circles back around to Caney Village, and they discuss the various influences that have helped to define the band. They also manage to work their way through an instrumental version of Hall and Oates’ “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do).” They recall a time in Los Angeles when they had booked a room through Airbnb but found out that the place was most definitely not as advertised. Finally, they recall an incident where their truck filled with the band’s gear was stolen and how they used a locater app on their phone to chase the thief around Soddy Daisy. Thankfully, there is a happy ending…sort of. It involves a 200 foot ravine and numerous police cars. Thank you to Billy Campbell for mixing this epiosde. Thank you to Joshua Pickard for the episode summary.
Shane hase been fly fishing ever since he was young- whether it was for Fine Spotted Cutthroat Trout on the dry in Jackson Hole, WY or throwing poppers at his local bass pond in Chicago, IL. Upon moving to Nashville for college at Belmont University, Shane sought out to learn the local rivers and apply his knowledge from past experiences out West. During college, Shane guided for Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions in the summer of 2013. He led backcountry fly fishing trips in Colorado and North Carolina for kids of all experience levels. This is Shane's first season guiding in Tennessee. His primarily focus is on the Caney Fork River. "Holdover trout are few and far between in Middle Tennessee and the Caney provides fly fishermen with the opportunity to catch trophy fish. I do everything in my power to ensure that the trout in the Caney are treated with respect so that everyone has a chance to catch great trout." Shane says.

Intergenerational Justice: What do we owe future generations?: Hilary Term Seminar Series 2011
Climate change raises profound questions of intergenerational justice. It is widely recognized that there is a powerful case for mitigation in virtue of obligations we have to future generations. But how much mitigation is required? Is the widely held view that humanity should act so as to prevent anything higher than two degrees celsius increase in temperatures over pre-industrial temperatures an appropriate one? Should the upper limit be lower than that? How should we decide? Answers to this depend not simply on scientific and social scientific projections but also on assumptions about how much is owed to our contemporaries and how much is owed to future generations. Dr Caney will explore several ways of thinking about intergenerational justice that have been proposed by philosophers, economists and policymakers.
