On todays episode of Bass Fishing for Noobs, Susie & Sean sit down with Kurt Smits to talk about DIY wiring electronics on your kayak. It can seem and feel overwhelming when trying to figure out how to wire everything together, but Kurt helps break things down in simpler terms. Some key things to keep in mind is to always refer to the user manual of each piece of equipment you're going to be running to determine what gauge wire and kind/size of fuses you will need. Not having the correct size of wire alone can greatly increase the risk of corrosion, overheating, or not having enough current going to the device. The second key thing to keep in mind is to keep connections as few and as simple as possible. Having a direct line running from the battery to the device is the best way to ensure there won't be any faults in the wiring. If you do need to connect wires, Kurt prefers to solder any and all connections. This creates a solid, metal connection to ensure the most complete connection. We take a brief look at how Kurt runs and manages his wiring system in his Hobie PA and has a nice, clean, and efficient way to mount and put wires and connections. Even if you're not an electrician or the thought of electricity might intimidate you, this is definitely an episode you'll want to check out! On this episode of Fishing the DMV we talk about the Smallmouth Fish Hatchery Program out of Front Royal Virginia with Jason Hallacher of Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. In 2020, the Front Royal Fish Hatchery took a pause for renovations, undergoing significant upgrades. These included building two modern hatchery structures with state-of-the-art temperature-controlled hatching equipment, setting up an advanced filtration system at the Passage Creek intake, and reinforcing the linings of four ponds. These changes were intended to optimize the entire process of hatching, nurturing, and harvesting fish. In May 2023, the hatchery reopened, specifically focusing on boosting the populations of smallmouth bass in the South and Shenandoah River systems. Please support Fishing the DMV on Patreon!!! Tonight on the Bass Fishing for Noobs show we welcome Ken Glassner Sr. of Ken's Jigs to the show. Ken runs his own business making a wide variety of jig heads and other products. Ken's weedless Ned rig heads have made fishing the Ned rig on the Susquehanna so much better, helping to avoid snags so much better than a normal mushroom style Ned head with an exposed hook. It has become a staple on Sean's kayak and has lead to many more catches. We start by learning a bit about Ken and how he got in to fishing and making his own baits. We then jump in to all the different products Ken produces as well as different ways they can be used. Ken has many different products available from underspins, darter heads, tube heads, ball head jigs, and ned heads, available in a ton of different colors. But perhaps one of the best reasons to give Ken's jigs a try is his ability to customize the jigs he offers. With over 60 different molds at his disposal, Ken is able to customize many of his products. Need a longer hook shank, or a different size hook or hook style? Hit Ken up and he will see what he can come up with! Welcome to another exciting episode of The Woman Angler & Adventurer podcast. In today's episode, we have a special guest who has been a legendary voice in the world of bass fishing. Our longtime announcer and the voice of the LBAA, Don Day, has decided to retire. While we'll miss him, we're excited to have him on the show to share his incredible stories and his unwavering support for women in fishing. Don Day has had a remarkable career in the industry, starting from his early days in South Georgia, where he spent countless hours fishing and hunting with his dad. Even during his time in the navy, he never lost his love for the outdoors. His broadcasting career began, and he eventually crossed paths with the founder of B.A.S.S., Ray Scott. They became friends, and Don had the opportunity to work with B.A.S.S., which marked the beginning of his relationship with the organization. One of the most memorable experiences in Don's career was a trip to Iraq with Ray Scott in 2004. The purpose of the trip was to thank the men and women in uniform and support them with fishing gear and other supplies. Don describes the emotional time he spent with the troops, reflecting on the impact they had on him and Ray Scott. It's clear that these experiences have shaped Don's perspective on life and the value of the outdoors industry. Don also shares his journey as an emcee, particularly with the women's bass fishing tours. He had the opportunity to work with the WBT (Women's Bass Tour) and eventually became involved with the LBAA (Ladies Bass Angler Association). Don's passion for supporting women in fishing shines through as he talks about the anglers he's met and the growth he's witnessed in their careers. As we wrap up another successful LBAA season, we reflect on the ups and downs of fishing and how even the greatest anglers can have their challenging days. Don reminds us that it's not just about the fish but also the behind-the-scenes details that make each angler unique. Join us for this captivating episode as Don Day shares his extraordinary stories, insights, and unwavering support for women in fishing. You won't want to miss it! On today's episode of the Noobs show, class is in session and the lesson is line choices and knots! Together Sean and Susie break down the main types of fishing line available to anglers today: Monofilament, fluorocarbon, braided line, and copolymer line. We break down the characteristics of each type of line, pros and cons like price, abrasion resistance, visibility, and strength, as well as cover our choice for different line types for different applications. Any good fishing line conversation wouldn't be complete without also discussing what you use to connect fishing line to lures and hooks or to join two types of line together, knots! Susie and Sean go over several different of those most popular knots for tying line to hooks and lures like the improved clinch knot, the uni knot, and the palomar knot. We also cover our favorite line to line knots including the alberto knot and the double-uni knot as well as several others.
