Send us Fan MailThe Serious Angler Bass Fishing Podcast sits down with West Coast Super 60 standout Joe Mariani to break down the toughest transition in bass fishing: the late-summer drawdown on Northern California reservoirs like Clear Lake, Berryessa, and Don Pedro. Joe explains why largemouth push shallow into dying grass while spotted bass and smallmouth abandon the bank entirely, why big square bills and topwater still fool giants in low, clear water, and how to locate suspended fall bass using forward-facing sonar on main-lake structure. The conversation also covers Joe's switch from Nitro to Bass Cat boats, tournament strategy for the no-practice BAM Super 60 series, and mental game lessons from grinding out top-10 finishes. A must-listen for bass anglers dealing with fall drawdown conditions, tournament anglers chasing forward-facing sonar techniques, and fans of West Coast bass fishing.

Chickahominy River Bass Fishing: Topwater & Spinnerbait Tournament Pattern

Fishing the DMV

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 6, 2026 49:35

On this episode of Fishing the DMV, Ty to break down his second-place finish in the Virginia Bass Nation Kayak Series tournament on the Chickahominy River in Virginia. Ty landed 81.50 inches of largemouth bass while figuring out a changing tidal bite built around buzzbaits, poppers and spinnerbaits. Anglers interested in Chickahominy River bass fishing, kayak tournament strategy and summertime tidal-water fishing will hear exactly how he adjusted throughout the day.Ty entered the tournament with limited recent experience on the Chickahominy River system and made a last-minute decision to launch from Chickahominy Riverfront Park instead of returning to the water he practiced near Rockahock. He began by searching a winding creek, concentrating on bends, grass, cypress trees and other shallow-water cover. His usual drop shots, shaky heads, wacky rigs and soft plastics failed to produce consistently, forcing him to abandon his original plan and pay closer attention to what the bass were actually doing. The pattern changed when a buzzbait generated three strikes within roughly 10 minutes. Ty then picked up a popper and found largemouth bass feeding around grass and chasing large baitfish that appeared to be gizzard shad. He explains why accurate casts, lure color and matching the available forage were so important, along with how incorrect replacement hooks contributed to several lost popper fish. When the clouds disappeared, the wind increased and the water became muddier, Ty transitioned to a spinnerbait and caught the biggest bass of his day.One of the most valuable lessons involved presentation angles. Several spinnerbait strikes came while Ty retrieved the lure in the opposite direction from what he expected based on the current. Once he recognized that pattern, he repeatedly covered the same productive stretch instead of leaving. His Old Town Autopilot 120, remote steering and Spot-Lock helped him stand up, maintain position and make precise casts between isolated grass clumps. In this episode, we cover:How Ty finished second with 81.50 inches on the Chickahominy RiverLocating largemouth bass in tidal creeks, grass and cypress treesWhy he turned off LiveScope while fishing shallow waterSwitching from soft plastics to buzzbaits and poppersMatching large baitfish with topwater lures and spinnerbaitsAdjusting to changing wind, sunlight, tide and water clarityUsing unexpected casting angles to trigger spinnerbait strikesKayak positioning, Spot-Lock and tournament decision-making  Please support Fishing the DMV on Patreon!!! https://patreon.com/FishingtheDMVPodcast If you are interested in being on the show or a sponsorship opportunity, please reach out to me at fishingtheDMV@gmail.com Bass and Furious on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@BassandFurious  Bass and Furious on Facebook: facebook.com/tybassandfurious Bass and Furious on Instagram: instagram.com/bassandfurious Check out Ty's sponsors down below.   Nest Realty:  https://www.nestrealty.com/fredericksburg/  Rapala: https://www.rapala.com/us_en/ Bass and Furious Shop  https://www.bonfire.com/store/bassandfurious-shop/ Jake's bait & Tackle Website: http://www.jakesbaitandtackle.com/ Link to Tactical Fishing Company: https://tacticalfishingco.com/ Fishing Pro Tech: https://www.facebook.com/FishingProTech Phone Number: (757) 566-1278 Email: lin@fishingprotech.us Fishing Pro Tech Address: 7812-A Richmond Road, Toano, VA, United States, 23168 Flint Financial Planning: https://www.flintfinancialplanning.com/ FITT Lures: https://bit.ly/4w5lgHtSupport the show

Whether you're curious about the latest Japanese finesse techniques or preparing for your next tournament, this episode delivers practical advice that anglers can immediately apply on the water. Episode Highlights The origin and rapid rise of the Urchin Bait. Why younger anglers are developing innovative techniques with the bait. Selecting the correct size for spotted bass versus largemouth bass. How bait weight affects fall rate and triggering strikes. Best colors to start with, including Green Pumpkin and Shad patterns. Fishing around grass, timber, rock, and suspended fish. Rigging options using single hooks, treble hooks, and weighted systems. Why fluorocarbon line generally outperforms braid for this presentation. Proper storage techniques for TPE soft plastics. Differences between Dice baits and Urchin baits. Creative modifications anglers are making to improve bait performance. Tournament preview for the BAM Super 60 on the Columbia River. Regional fishing insights from Northern California and the Pacific Northwest. Gear & Technique Takeaways Match bait size to the species and conditions. Focus on achieving a slow, natural sink rate. The bait's movement is more important than exact color selection. Strong, stiff tentacles create the best underwater action. Experiment with weighted hooks to fine-tune fall speed. Fluorocarbon helps maintain better bait control and hook-up percentages. Store TPE baits separately to prevent warping and damage. Don't limit the bait to LiveScope fishing—it can be effective around nearly every type of cover. Tournament Talk The crew also previews upcoming BAM Trail events, discussing: Columbia River fishing conditions. Boardman versus Tri-Cities strategies. Local anglers expected to contend. Wind and current considerations. Catch expectations and what it may take to win. Rich Craft's confidence heading into competition. Featured Sponsors Thanks to the companies that support BAM and tournament anglers across the West. BAM Trail Bass Angler Magazine BAM Super 60 Tournament sponsor partners discussed throughout the episode. Why You Should Listen If you've been hearing about Urchin Baits but weren't sure how or when to fish them, this episode breaks everything down—from lure selection and rigging to real-world tournament applications. Joe Mariani and Ty Manarola share the techniques they're using to consistently catch bass, while offering insights into one of the fastest-growing trends in modern bass fishing. Whether you fish clear reservoirs, grass lakes, or river systems, you'll come away with practical tips that can help put more fish in the boat. We dig into how he decides whether to start shallow or deep, and how he decides between throwing a moving bait to cover water or slowing down with a finesse presentation on the bottom.Bob walks through the real factors that go into these calls: water temperature, seasonal patterns, water clarity, forage location, fishing pressure, and current conditions. We also get into what happens when those two decisions conflict, like when everything points shallow but everything also points slow, and how he adjusts on the fly once his starting game plan doesn't produce.
