I knew Leo from his high school years at Mosman High School in the 90s. Now a dad with 3 boys aged 14, 12 and 10 he works extensively with boys at school as teacher and pastor. Leo’s advice: When you pick the school for kids, pick the principal. Know your kids' friends and engineer your kids to the right friends. Learn to understand your own emotion is the best you can do as a parent. Don’t be your kids’ friend. Never be the cool dad. You need to be a dad. I still remembered very clearly how Ben told me HSC is the most important thing in life that he MUST DO WELL. A hard-working boy, he got into exactly the course he wanted to do in UBC and started a new life in Vancouver. In the blink of an eye, three years have passed. We happily chatted about his quarantine life in Canada, first time trip to Taiwan to find his quarter root, his hobbies and plans and most important of all, his advice to year 12 kids. #10 A musical day in the life of Susie -Vlog (apply the Pomodoro technique) I heard about this Pomodoro technique two days ago. Wow Totally amazing. So I decided to do a LIVE sound documentary to experiment this. (PS: There is an app to help you achieve this called “Focus Keeper”. According to Wikipedia, this is the best time management Pomodoro technique. There are six steps in the original technique: Decide on the task to be done. Set the Pomodoro timer (traditionally to 25 minutes).[2] Work on the task. End work when the timer rings and put a checkmark on a piece of paper.[6] If you have fewer than four checkmarks, take a short break (3–5 minutes), then go to step 2. After four pomodoros, take a longer break (15–30 minutes), reset your checkmark count to zero, then go to step 1. Perhaps give it a go? 14-year-old Allegra is definitely the shyest student that I have ever interviewed, especially this was recorded just right after our 3rd lesson together. I collected the questions that my listeners asked before our recording. Many of the parents have teen children so their questions sometimes are just so random and hilarious to answer. I have Taiwanese listeners request an episode on Australian English for my other Chinese/Taiwanese podcast. Originally I had Millie recording a wonderful full episode with me but I accidentally didn't save it (So sorry Millie). I didn't want to bother year 12 Millie again so this time I ask year 9 Poppy and Presley coming to record the episode with me instead. It's so funny that I think the Aussie listeners should hear it too. I cut the teaching part at the beginning and just show you our hilarious conversation. Nanaha (Age 10) with Singing LIVE Lots of listeners told me that our podcast is very therapeutic because the conversation is often very funny and cute. Now you are listening to this conversation with Nanaha with cute factor 10/10. Nanaha is a talented little girl who competes and performs in many dancing/singing competitions every year. A well-spoken bilingual girl, she talks me about her passion for doing makeup, schools, friends and just anything exciting. "Whenever I search on songs it's always lovey-dovey song that I don't like it!" she said loudly. Here are two non-lovey-dovey songs from Nanaha - "Speechless" from Aladdin and "I still call Australia home" in this episode. Ladies and gentles, my absolute little darling-Miss Nanaha Ryu. Honoka (Age 15) Honoka is a beautiful 15-year-old Japanese/Australian ballerina. She said she lives in a very girly environment, goes to an all-girls school, dances with lots of girls and looks after her little sister at home. At first, you will think Honoka is very shy but she is very well-spoken and can talk about everything and anything. She chats with me about the significance of dance in her life, what’s like to be bilingual and her views on teachers and parents. Some girls you can look at them and know they are dancers. Lucas came to his last piano lesson and did the podcast with me straight after his final HSC exam. I have taught Lucas for the past 10 years and it has always been amazing to see his calm and relax demeanour towards everything in life. I don't take new students for piano anymore but it's so good to see how kids like Lucas making piano and music to be part of his life. "it shouldn't be a chore" he said. Lucas is definitely the most self-motivated kid I have ever seen. When I get very overwhelmed with things I always remember what Lucas said: "Everything is sort of working its way out. Nothing is going wrong. What do you have to worry about?" Some kids are quite wise. I do learn from him too. We wish our dear Lucas fly high and wide in Uni and have amazing fun. Xavier (Age 15) I have taught quite a few boys from Scots College over the years and am always very fascinated to find out more about their Glengarry program. Glengarry is a unique outdoor education, six-month residential experience for all Year 9 students at Scots College in Sydney. Xavier comes back from Glengarry taller, stronger and more mature. He talks about what the 6 months living in the bush is like. What hobbies he picks up after Glengarry. Angelina is my pretty 16-year-old girl who has lots of interesting things to share. It's quite hard to edit Angelina's episode because there are lots of hilarious juicy stuff that we can't put on Air and it's just too funny. She talks about her passion for drama and musicals, beaches, boyfriends, formal and what's like to have an Instagram ambassador account. Zetong (Age 10) with Singing LIVE Zetong seems very embarrassed to talk about the gifted and talented enrichment program that he was selected in school. He continuous tries to say how boring it is but you can see he is one very intelligent boy. He talks about how much he loves his lego class and as an only child, what he does to entertain himself with technology. I asked him to sing songs from "Where I want to be" from the musical "Chess", as well as a famous Taiwanese pop song "The direction of heart". He came to Australia from China at age 3, it's quite remarkable to see he is very fluent in both languages. Brandon was the first guest for our podcast show. One year on, I invited him back to the show to sing. His voice is so much lower now and you can hear the thought is much more mature. I especially like this song "Aftermath" that he wrote. He got weird and very uncomfortable when I tease about his girlfriend issues so I will just let you listen to this yourself. So different from the crazy 6-year old Brandon that I used to teach not too long ago. A hilarious, random conversation between us that will never change with time. Millie (Age 17) with Singing LIVE It’s still hard to believe Millie was first here in our mosman studio at age 3 at her brother’s lesson. 17 year old Millie talks about how important singing playing a part in her sometimes stressful and at times anxious teenage life. Her view on going to a all girl school since kindergarten is also very interesting. I always believe people come across each other’s path for a reason. When she sings you can’t help but indulge in her thoughts and voice. Miss Millie Saric, the only new student I take this year and I am so glad I did. Bea is the girliest 10-year-old girl I know who has a massive collection of Barbies and just loves everything about fairies, unicorns and mermaids! "If I am on the horse, I feel nothing else matters," said Bea. She started horse riding at age 6 and talks fondly about her horse "Isabelle". She sings "A million dreams" from The Greatest Showman and "home" from the musical Wonderland. It's a really cute, sweet conversation with my little Miss Beatrix Cadman.
Olina (Age 22) It’s hard to believe that Olina is 22 now. She was my little music girl for a very long time. She talks about what life is like after University, the preparation progress for her thesis and the interesting part-time job in politics. Olina is a real combination of East meets West. One minute she drinks, parties and tackles in Rugby field and the next minute she speaks fluent Chinese and works towards the law entrance exam. “Don’t drink too much.” she said to all the kids… Sometimes crazy sometimes nerdy. My dear Miss Olina Parrish
Adriana (Age 10) Adriana is my youngest student. She has massive big eyes with the longest eyelashes I have ever seen and the most dramatic facial expression at all times. She talks about what is like to be a cheerleader and what life is like with two big brothers. You must listen to our hilarious conversation to find out what she really wants to include in her lunchbox and what is the ideal lunch! Ladies and gentleman, Our dear little Miss Adriana Brindisi
