We watched a classic this time, gang. It was technically a box office bomb though. So we had a good excuse. Subjects include influence being the THING in our current culture, whether or not the Glengarry guys are "a type of guy", good movies that are hard to like, resetting Instagram suggested content for your mental health, creation in the age of algorithms, etc.

It's Die Hard in a police station! This week, hosts Phil and Liam are locked into a high-stakes discussion on The Negotiator - the 1998 action-thriller starring Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey in a battle of wits, words, and tactical mind games! When he becomes inveigled in a corruption scandal involving suspected embezzlement of the Chicago P.D. pension's fund, expert hostage negotiator Danny Roman (Samuel L. Jackson) decides to turn the tables and takes hostages at the Internal Affairs bureau, in an effort to find the truth and clear his name. Sensing that he has enemies in his own midst, Roman demands that the only negotiator he will speak to be Chris Sabian (Kevin Spacey), a mysterious stranger from an entirely different district. But can Sabian be trusted? And how do you negotiate your way out when everyone assumes you are the real villain? In this tightly wound pressure-cooker thriller, we break down how The Negotiator cleverly inverts the Die Hard formula - putting the good guy in control of the siege, with a besieged skyscraper, hostages, FBI interference, and a whole lot of air shaft action! We explore the film's copious Die Hard DNA, from over-the-radio showdowns and ill-fated SWAT assaults to computer hacking, power shutdowns, and even a debate about old Western movies between the two adversaries! We also highlight the killer supporting cast, the film's “Glengarry with Guns” energy, and why F. Gary Gray deserves more love! Plus, we dig into the importance of the Chicago setting and discuss how the film channels The Fugitive with its “wrongly accused” narrative - shoutout to Andrew Davis! Chicago forever! Was the last clan battle that which happened at Altimarlach in 1680 or the battle of Mulroy in 1688? In this two-part episode I consider the events that lead up to the battle of Mulroy and the different perspectives one could take in deciding if it was the last clan battle. Text us your wine questions, craziest wine experiences, or if you just have a comment for us. . I get to speak with Joanne Pratt and Craig MacMillan, the owners of Stonehouse Vineyard in Lochiel, Ontario. Unless you've read either of my two Sipsters Pocket Guides to 50 Must-Try Ontario Wines, there is little chance that you could have even heard of Stonehouse before. The winery is in a converted barn and the whole property is perched on the top of a beautiful ridge in far eastern Ontario - the first vineyard operating in the area - just before the Quebec border in Glengarry county. If you've ever driven the 401 between Montreal and Toronto or the 417 between Montreal and Ottawa, then you have passed through Glengarry County. Drive away from either of those highways and you'll be in some of the most beautiful farmland in the province, if not the country. Joanne and Craig have really done their homework. They know that making great wine is only one step to a successful winery. They've also been carefully building their brand, creating associations with other cold climate wineries, and encouraging academic research with Concordia University to help literally break ground and pioneer a wine industry in a new region. It was really exciting for me to witness this first hand and I'm so glad that I was able to connect with them when I was in the area this past November. Thank you for continuing to listen to the Sipster's Podcast. I know I haven't done as many episodes this past year as I'd hoped but I am hoping to continue producing more podcasts in 2025. Wine: Allan Scott Cecilia Brut, Marlborough $24 Why I chose it: - I like it very much, especially the price. - It's a perfect “stand-by” wine in case of unexpected visitors. - It is a real crowd-pleaser. - A wine for all seasons. - I haven't chosen a sparkling wine for while. What does it taste like? - A blend of pinot noir and chardonnay with a creamy, yeast-infused palate that is both fresh and mellow with restrained complexity. A perfect balance of subtle sweetness and mouth-watering acidity. Why it's a bargain: - Bottle-fermented sparkling wine is expensive to make, you won't find too many good examples under $25. Where can you buy it? - Whisky and More, Waikato $20.99 -Big Barrel stores $less than $23 - Glengarry, Auckland $22.99 Food match? -Canapes, especially seafood, particularly oysters. It doesn't need the complication of food. Will it keep? - Good for a few years although it isn't vintage-dated. Drink it up. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Oldest Independent Bottlers and a Brand New Scottish Distillery Are you fascinated by the rich history of whisky and the art of independent bottling? Join me as I welcome esteemed friend Gary Pickard, Northeast Regional Manager of Pacific Edge Wine and Spirits. Gary takes us on a captivating journey through the histories of two iconic independent bottlers, William Cadenheads and AD Rattray. From George Duncan's founding of William Cadenheads in 1842 to Robert W. Duthie's tragic end and the company's resilience through decades of challenges, this episode is packed with intriguing insights and personal anecdotes from visits to Cadenheads boutique stores in London and Edinburgh. As we continue, we explore the storied legacy of Campbeltown whiskies and the remarkable survival of distilleries like Springbank and Glen Scotia. Gary shares his deep knowledge of AD Rattray, tracing its evolution from Andrew Dewar Rattray's grocery store in 1868 to its current state under Tim Morrison's leadership. We delve into the Morrison family's significant impact on the whisky industry, including their acquisitions of Bowmore, Glengarry, and Auchentoshan, now under Suntory's ownership. This episode underscores the critical role independent bottlers play in bringing the hidden gems of lesser-known distilleries to light. Finally, we unravel the complexities of Islay whiskies, discussing the distinctive features of renowned distilleries like Bowmore, Lagavulin, and Bruichladdich. We explore the cultural contrasts between Japanese and Anglo-American approaches to whisky production and the challenges faced during Suntory's acquisition of Beam. Additionally, we touch on the resurgence of distilleries within Glasgow's city limits, spotlighting the modern marvel that is Clydeside Distillery. This episode is a rich tapestry of whisky history, culture, and the intricate world of independent bottling that any whisky enthusiast won't want to miss. Sales is often spoken of as the tip of the spear for any enterprise. That's not true --- marketing is the tip of the spear. But we'll leave that alone. Sales is often the first time a customer or buyer experiences a company --- the ethic, the product, the approach. Sales as a career attracts a certain type of person --- driven, very focused, sometimes with big but usually at least a healthy ego. Many focused on the needs of their customers. Many focused on the bucks. Some even focused on both. Like any position, you get people who are out on the fringes of the bell-shaped curve (to be fair --- marketing included). In sales, on one end, those who are so focused on the dollars, they'll do anything to keep them rolling in. On the other end, those who whine that it's all stacked against them --- they have no help, no prospects, no luck, no life. I was struck like a lightning bolt by an examination, a wild and exaggerated examination, but one that was close to the truth, of both extremes in sales by the 1992 film Glengarry Glen Ross. Marketing will make you an observer --- of trends, of behavior, of people. When I saw Glengarry, a chill ran down my spine and I thought, my god! I've been in cars for hours with these guys! What I'd observed out in the wild was up on the screen. But distilled down to its essence. You rooted for these guys, or you hated their guts. What a film…Website and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

Good match with Feta cheese. Will it keep? - Good for 3-4 years but probably not a lot to gain from keeping it. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode we are talking agriculture from two angles: equity investment into working farms and lending to farmers to get them through a tough growing season or to expand their operations. Both of my guests have a great deal of experience in their respective areas and you'll love to hear about how Canadian agriculture is staying competitive and delivering quality food to your table.
Tell you what I'm getting quite sick of: constantly being told by Government ministers and people who want to be nice to criminals that crime is tracking down. You hear it all the time. Every time someone pitches an idea for how to crack down on crime, like the ACT Party with the juvenile detention centre idea yesterday, up pops a critic with a piece of data to tell you that there's nothing to worry about. You're imagining it, crime's not as bad as you think, ram raids are falling, youth crime and retail crime is down, the cops are winning. BS. I call BS on any of this stuff. Critics can cherry pick their data all they want, they can selectively use time frames that tell the story they want to, and they can exclude crime categories to twist the narrative. They can do any number of things that paint a certain picture. But what they can't get around is what we're seeing with our own eyes and hearing with our own ears. Last week, I went to a furniture shop in Newmarket's new Westfield mall. Really nice place, nice part of town, the kind of place where you don't expect rampant crime. The guy selling me a couch told me they have people walking out of the store with the Dyson vacuum cleaners in their hands, into the mall and they can't do anything to stop them. He said the same people will steal things in the morning, then come back in the afternoon and do it again- because there are no consequences. In the last year, the dairy down the road from me, the clothing store on the same street and the Glengarry nearby were all ram-raided. I can't recall ever seeing a ram-raid before that, and I've lived in this neighbourhood for 8 years on and off. Michael Hill jeweller has been hit so many times now by guys with hammers, that they've hired security guards for all 34 North Island stores because everything else they've done hasn't worked. Now I understand that media can whip up a moral panic and I'm wary of being sucked into a false reality. Which is why I've quoted you, not media coverage of crime, but things I've seen and heard and actual concrete steps retailers are being forced to take. It is getting tiring being told this isn't happening when it clearly is. The people telling us it isn't happening need to get with the page. Because we want something to be done, so this can stop. And if they don't like the ideas being pitched, like the juvie detention centres, come up with a different idea. But stop pretending it isn't happening. The Man from Glengarry by Ralph Connor audiobook. With international book sales in the millions, Ralph Connor was the best-known Canadian novelist of the first two decades of the Twentieth Century. The Man from Glengarry was his most popular and accomplished work. Immediately after its publication in 1901, the novel spent several months in the top ranks of the New York Times "Books in Demand" list. We follow the story of Ranald Macdonald, who is shaped by family and community in rural eastern Ontario in the early decades after Canadian confederation. This is a book about the making of men, but also, ultimately, about the making of a nation, as the mature Ranald moves west to take a leadership role in the fledgling province of British Columbia. The Man from Glengarry features adventure and romance, and is, above all, a work of serious moral purpose. "Ralph Connor" was the pen-name of the Reverend Charles Gordon, a prominent Canadian minister, and his stories are woven through with his religious convictions. His is a two-fisted Christianity — or, as he said in his autobiography, a religion that can appeal to "red-blooded" people who aren't afraid to engage in physical conflict for causes that they know are right. Glengarry School Days by Ralph Connor audiobook. With international book sales in the millions, Ralph Connor was the best-known Canadian novelist of the first two decades of the Twentieth Century. Glengarry School Days (1902), hugely popular in its time, is based on his memories of growing up in rural Ontario around the time of Canadian confederation. Although Connor saw himself as writing moral fiction for adults, generations of younger readers have also enjoyed these affectionate and gently amusing sketches, and excerpts from Glengarry School Days have appeared in school anthologies. Scott was born in Stirling and from an early age he showed an aptitude for playing the Bagpipes. At nearly 16 he had been into the Army recruitment office where he was keen to join the Royal Military Police. However, the Sgt informed him that the RMP were not recruiting. As luck would have it the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders were and the fact that Scott plays the Bagpipes appeared to be a bonus!Scott served in Northern Ireland and considers it one of the toughest deployment that he took place in. There were many laughs and the diverse nature of the Army brought Celtic and Rangers fans together who then had to police the Catholic (Cetlic) And Rangers (Protestant) public of Northern Ireland. It was all compounded when a ring tone on a mobile phone played "The Sash My Father Wore"During a deployment there was a ceasefire and this enable the military to wear their "Soft Head Wear" in the case of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders this was the Glengarry ,and for Scott he wore the distinctive Pipers Glengarry which is black and white. He was one of the many Military extras in the video for the Cranberries hit Zombies which has been viewed by 1.3bn people!Scott was part of the team that policed Drumcree where those who were working with the military during the day were fighting them at night! He also witnessed the issues of Holy Cross where children were being taken to school and facing hostile behaviour. The protestant protestors threw urine filled balloons at the children and their parents.Scott Travelled the world and served in Iraq. He was based with Prince Harry fighting the insurgents. He latterly served in the Falklands where Prince William was carrying out his role as a helicopter pilot. Whilst in the Falklands he took part in cleaning the memorials of those killed during the conflict in 1982.Scott was hand picked to be the Sovereigns Piper. This followed a selection process that saw Scott meeting Queen Elizabeth II and having lunch with her. Little did he know he was in the most important interview of his life. Scott was selected and commenced his role.During his time he played for heads of state and would meet the Queen everyday. She referred to Scott as Pipes. Whilst at Balmoral Scott`s wife Morvan became unwell and was seen by the Queens Physician. Morvan was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The royal family rallied round and the Methven Family received the support that they deserved at this trying time. When Morvan passed in 2018, Scott decided to stand-down from the role and care for his two children.Scott now teaches pipers across the world both online and in person. Long Island-based author and humorist Matthew David Brozik is on Finding Favorites to talk about his favorite things - potato chips, sleeping and super heroes. More specifically, the last ten minutes of the 1992 movie Glengarry, Glen Ross. We also talk about REM, XTC and TMBG... and TLC. Matthew's new book Odder Space is available on Amazon in print and digital (though he'd really rather you choose the print copy). Odder Space is a humorous upper middle grade sci-fi novel with awe-inspiring spaceships, belligerent aliens, phlazer battles, pseudoscientific gobbledygook, and an artificial intelligence with a serious morale problem... but also spunk, heart, and some important life lessons. Mostly it's just a lot of fun.
