After an extended break brought to you by #2020 - we're back, baby!Watching footy this year has felt a little bit like sitting in an empty stand at the MCG singing Dave Dobbyn to yourself, but there have been some surprisingly enjoyable parts to the season. In this special episode we talk about things we missed and loved during the 2020 season. Brodie and Amy also drop a huge surprise on Sarah that seals the fate of her future daughter. Thanks to Friend Of The Pod Gemma who helped us concoct the perfect footy origin story.Audio note: The audio quality on this episode isn't as clear as usual as it was recorded using the magic of the internet, rather than in a radio studio. Our artwork was designed by Steph Hughes, and our theme song is 'Here if You Need' by Wet Lips.Follow us on socials:Twitter @fangrrrlspodInstagram @fangrrrlspodFacebook @ fangrrrlsOr get in touch:Email fangrrrlspodcast@gmail.com

Who better to talk about all our big Grand Final week feelings with than Paul Kelly? On this week's episode, AFL field umpire Eleni Glouftsis tells us about her zen approach to handling the heckles as she does her job – the aim of which is to be "unobtrusive and un-spoken about".Eleni made history in round 9, 2017 when she became the AFL's first female field umpire during a home and away season. She gives insight on that game and Brendan Goddard's words of comfort for her, talks us through the way umpires handle rule changes, shares her favourite footy moments (hint: it's the same as ours), and clues us in on on learning players' names. (If in doubt, call them Jack.)ICYMI, here's the moment Eleni's partner, boundary umpire Dillon Tee, popped the question at the 'G after the Round 19 clash between Adelaide and Carlton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGooudyOvuUOur artwork was designed by Steph Hughes, and our theme song is 'Here if You Need' by Wet Lips.Follow us on socials:Twitter @fangrrrlspodInstagram @fangrrrlspodFacebook @ fangrrrlsOr get in touch:Email fangrrrlspodcast@gmail.com
This week, Sarah and Brodie chat to Bec Goring, who sits in the dead-centre of our ideal venn diagram, being a regular gigging musician and the vice captain of Geelong's AFLW team.We chat to Bec about balancing her double life, stepping into the captaincy, and what she hopes for the future in the league. Plus, Sarah makes her answer the definitive question once and for all: does Geelong produce better musicians or footballers?Amy's on vaycay! Matthew Richardson is an integral part of Sarah, Amy and Brodie's separate and combined footy origin stories, so you can imagine our delight (and very chill and normal reactions) when we heard he was keen to stop by Fan Grrrls for a chat.We did it, we hooked our white whale. And we got to ask him about 2017, we found out what he's got on his Discman and heard the horrifying story of a true footy curse. And, of course, we asked him the very special question we ask all our guests. It's Richo, bitches. Our artwork was designed by Steph Hughes, and our theme song is 'Here if You Need' by Wet Lips.See special, behind the scenes content from Richo's visit by following us on socials:Twitter @fangrrrlspodInstagram @fangrrrlspodFacebook @ fangrrrlsOr get in touch:Email fangrrrlspodcast@gmail.com

It's finally happened. It's time for us to tamp down on our damage, push our feelings aside and dedicate an episode to discussing the Pies. Specifically, we chat to directors Josh Cable and Marcus Cobbledick about their new documentary, 'Collingwood from the Inside Out'. Watch it here. These two diehard Bluebaggers chat about the lifetime of what they've only known as "Carlton humility", what it's like for them to be back at Princes Park for Carlton AFLW games, the saddest AFL record Jack's realised Kade Simpson might soon break, and Seamus's incredible promise to his former schoolmate Jack Silvagni. We also get to discuss some of our favourite topics, including the marriage of footy and music that abounds in Melbourne, and Richo, who the guys have written a song about! It's a topic that's been on the minds of fans and officials in footy – and sports more widely – for decades, but only in recent years has become front-page news. Joining Sarah, Amy and Brodie to discuss concussion complexities is Stephanie Convery, who as well as being Deputy Culture Editor at the Guardian Australia, is the author of the forthcoming book, Who Killed Davey Browne? Following the inquest into the avoidable death of 29-year-old Australian professional boxer Davey Browne, Steph's book will be published by Penguin Random House in March 2020. Our chat covers footy (obvi) and why boxers – like Steph herself – keep chasing the adrenalin of the sport, despite the risks. We also ask what is concussion, how does it manifest, how do we identify it, and what are the long-term repercussions of head injuries, like concussion?Read the pieces discussed in this episode, and related to our chat:Stephanie's story on Davey from 2017The case of 17-year-old Canadian rugby player Rowan Stringer, and the law that her concussion-related death influencedWendy Carlisle on the AFL's concussion problemSt Kilda's Paddy McCartin opens up about the affects of multiple concussionsAnnie Nolan writes about her children's responses to their dad, Liam Picken's, on-field concussionsFOTD (Friend of the Pod) Konrad Marshall on the concussion class actionOur artwork was designed by Steph Hughes, and our theme song is 'Here if You Need' by Wet Lips.Get in touch with us:Twitter @fangrrrlspodInstagram @fangrrrlspodFacebook @ fangrrrlsEmail fangrrrlspodcast@gmail.com
It's been a while between drinks for the Fan Grrrls, and today Sarah, Amy and Brodie are back with a chat about how we're feeling about this weird footy season for the tiges. We also talk through what the current conversations about footy crowd behaviour conjure up in us and how it feels lacking, what we agree to by being in these spaces, and how the behaviours of individuals and crowds differ (and compare).NB this conversation was recorded before AFL CEO Gil MacLachlan's press conference. The article we discuss is 'AFL barracking: Was I guilty of antisocial behaviour?' by Melinda Houston in The Age. It's astrology time again! Emma Koster – founder of Hello Cass and casual astrologer – first paid us a visit back in episode 10 of Fan Grrrls. As we approach the season's half-time break, she's back with more insights and forecasts for how we got here and what's to come.**NB we recorded this episode a couple of weeks ago, and the ladder's shifted slightly since, but the contents of Emma's analyses remain the same!Hello Cass is an SMS chatbot providing information and support pathways for people experiencing or effected by family and sexual violence. What a dream. Ahead of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round this weekend, Brodie, Sarah and Amy are joined on the podcast by two incredible guests – who happen to share a close family connection – Danzal Baker aka Baker Boy and his aunty, Leila Gurruwiwi, a long-serving panellist on the Marngrook Footy Show.Hear Baker Boy talk about what it means to perform his song 'Black Magic' at Dreamtime at the 'G and his lifelong long of Essendon. Then, Leila shares stories from her bone-deep connection to the Western Bulldogs and discusses the lingering pain of dealing with the treatment of Adam Goodes as a member of the footy media and an Aboriginal woman. Leila also shares an insight into the incredible spark that made her believe she could be and do anything – something we're all very grateful she learned early on.If you enjoyed this episode, we'd love it if you left a review! Our artwork was designed by Steph Hughes, and our theme song is 'Here if You Need' by Wet Lips.Get in touch with us:Twitter @fangrrrlspodInstagram @fangrrrlspodFacebook @ fangrrrlsEmail fangrrrlspodcast@gmail.com
Sports satirist Titus O'Reily joins us this week to talk about the grim reality of letting a bunch of 20-year-olds determine if we're happy or sad. Just fun footy things!Titus tells us how he became both a footy fan and also one of our favourite satirical commentators. Together we dig into the darkness of the ‘good bloke’ and the culture that builds them up, backs them when they mess up, and condemns the rest of us for expecting more from them. We commiserate about how the S*m N*wmans of the world try to define what footy is for the rest of us, and the way footy media has tried or failed to keep up with changes in comedy and culture over the years. If you enjoyed this episode, we'd love it if you left a review!
When you hear Yasmina McGlone has represented Victoria in Wheelchair AFL and won Richmond's Best & Fairest award in the sport last year, you'd never guess she hadn't seen an AFL game a few years ago, let alone never used a wheelchair before last April!Yasmina came in for a chat this week about her path to sport and how she explains her wild new life to her family back home in Scotland. At the end of the show we mentioned Hello Cass, an SMS chatbot providing information and support pathways for people experiencing or effected by family and sexual violence, created by past guest (and total legend) Emma Koster. If you enjoyed this episode, we'd love it if you left a review!
Adelaide-based writer Kylie Maslen joined us for a chat this week to tell us what a two-team footy town is like – especially as a fan of an interstate club! Kylie told us what it was like to be at Adelaide Oval for the AFLW grand final too. It's also "Boo Central" (Smith, S., 2019), and we discuss the recent "controversies" with crowds and the footy commentariat. This week we welcomed Michael Willson, the AFL's chief photographer, to Fan Grrrls. Whether or not you know Michael's name, if you've observed footy media over the past decade you're probably familiar with his work.He talked to us about the ethical issues that arise when you're photographing players' intimate moments, commiserated about the shots he missed, and explained his ability to sense when a big mark is coming. Michael also revealed the players that all footy photographers just love to shoot, and tells us how social media has helped make players more comfortable with opening up and showing emotion. If you enjoyed this episode, we'd love it if you left a review!

When Emma Murray talks about tigers, she's referring to either the metaphorical fear that stokes our caveman-like 'fight or flight' survival instincts – or our beloved Richmond Tigers, whose 2017 premiership success was credited to her work as the club's high-performance mindfulness coach. We were absolutely thrilled to spend an hour digging into Emma's work – both at the club and outside it – and learn about the processes and practices that help our favourite footballers focus on playing their best game, deal with both the lows and the highs of the game, and train themselves not to fear the metaphorical tiger. She reassured us that our response to the Collingwood crowd at the pre-lim was understandable and totally primal, and encouraged us to ask all our Dusty-related questions. This is a very fancy way to say we were total fan girls. Our artwork was designed by Steph Hughes, and our theme song is 'Here if You Need' by Wet Lips. We had to put a lid on our fandom this week because AFLW marquee player and genuine legend Darcy Vescio joined us for a chat and we didn't want to freak her out.Darcy talked to us about being a fangirl (and a hero to young AFLW fans – and players), the surprising blessing of growing up being a girl playing footy in a small town, and the new hobbies she shares with Cats captain and former FanGrrrls guest Mel Hickey. In recognising that what she's doing is already part of a significant moment in sporting history, Darcy also talks us through how she's learned to focus on the big picture and not sweat the small stuff so much. Our artwork was designed by Steph Hughes, and our theme song is 'Here if You Need' by Wet Lips. Can you hear that? The sound of three women feeling stressed and giggly about sports? Must be time for the return of Fan Grrrls! There's plenty of AFLW activity this weekend and tbh we still don't *quite* understand the conference system but luckily Kate O'Halloran, host of RRR's new AFLW radio show Kick Like a Girl, is back on the pod to explain it all to us. Declan Faye is a comedy writer, director and broadcaster, and the host of The Sweetest Plum podcast. But who cares about any of that when he was also the co-winner of the MCG's best Pie Boy of the 1993 finals series award?!We got all the intel on what pie-selling at the 'G entails (spoiler alert: it sometimes involves pashing), laid the foundation for an inevitable Channel 10 miniseries about Pie Boys, and found out where Declan scattered the ashes of his Hawks-obsessed dad.
What is it about footy that makes us stick with a team year in, year out no matter what? This week comedian Matt Stewart joins us for a very funny exploration into the mind of an avid (long suffering) Saints fan. He recalls all the best and worst bits of his fandom, including the time he drunkenly accosted his hero Justin "Frankie" Peckett outside a bar in Adelaide. You can catch Matt on his own podcasts Do Go On and Prime Mates. Our artwork was designed by Steph Hughes, and our theme song is 'Here if You Need' by Wet Lips. This week we're stoked to chat to Andy Maher about the often-stuffy world of sports media, what it's like to watch his daughters run out onto the footy field on weekends, sticking by the Blues in dog days, and waiting for the arseholes to die. You'd recognise Andy from his arvo show on SEN, as one of the hosts of Channel 7's The Front Bar and the Carlton Show podcast, and his myriad other writing and commentary gigs. We've tried to resist it, but you know it was coming eventually: it's the Richmond episode! This Friday, Richmond's going up against Collingwood in the prelims, and we're all VERY NERVOUS. To get us through, we had a nice long chat with Konrad Marshall: journalist, Tiger tragic, and author of 'Yellow and Black: a Season With Richmond' aka our favourite piece of literature. With a notepad and pen in hand, Konrad went inside Tigerland in 2016 … and when that season didn't end so well, he returned in 2017 to chronicle what a premiership year is like for a big Melbourne footy club. Lucky for us, it was the footy club we have LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT.We talk about stories from inside Richmond, our queen Peggy O'Neal, highlights of getting to know players, and what players (and Brodie) really think about Roaming Brian.Stick it in your ears and let it calm you down like the mindfulness exercises Trent Cotchin listens to before a game. This week we had a great chat with Kate O'Halloran, sports editor and journalist at Guardian Australia. We really needed to VENT about the way the 2019 AFLW season is being handled at the moment, but also got to talk about where the Doggies are at post-2016, what it's like being a woman writing about sport, and why we should just Leave The Game Alone.Find out why we're all a bit verklempt this week when you read Brodie's profile on Dustin Martin: https://www.complex.com/sports/2018/08/dustin-martin-has-nothing-left-to-proveOur artwork was designed by Steph Hughes, and our theme song is 'Here if You Need' by Wet Lips. Jet bassist Mark Wilson and former Twerps drummer Patrick O'Neil forged their friendship over an obsessive love of the Geelong Football Club. Less than 24 hours after the Tigers beat the Cats by 3 points at the MCG, the pair pushed their pride aside to talk to Sarah, Brodie and Amy about The Greatest Team of All.Mark and Pat share tales of growing up in the shadow of Kardinia Park, watching "God" bag 14 goals against the Tiges in '89, and what it's like to bleed blue and white. Plus, Mark spills on what really happened when Jet played the 2007 Grand Final, partying with the Geelong players in the aftermath, and his recent Richmond/Richo encounters inside Punt Road. Our artwork was designed by Steph Hughes, and our theme song is 'Here if You Need' by Wet Lips. If you google “clash between AFL player and umpire” it’s likely you will find footage of this episode's guest, Dr Courtney Lai. An AFL goal umpire for 61 matches, in 2013 he was sidelined for 18 months with a horrific knee injury following an on-field incident with Western Bulldogs player Liam Picken. While Courtney eventually returned to umpiring, his time in rehab sparked an interest in orthopaedics. Already a practising doctor, in 2017 he hung up his flags to take up a PHD at La Trobe focussed on ACL injuries in elite AFL players. He took some time out from his studies to fill us in on the secret world of AFL umpires and to indulge Sarah's morbid interest in knee injuries. Our artwork was designed by Steph Hughes, and our theme song is 'Here if You Need' by Wet Lips.
