I'm so excited to share a conversation I had with Courtney Florey of Declutter & Dwell with you today. Courtney is the creator and owner of Declutter & Dwell. She helps overwhelmed moms declutter their lives and trade the constant cycle of cleaning up for a life of purpose, fulfillment, and simplicity. I wanted to bring Courtney on because there is a lot of similarities with the ways we approach food and how we approach our home (and really every other area of our lives). While Courtney gives very practical tips for where to start when you want to declutter, she also empowers women to embrace imperfection in their homes and give themselves grace. I can't wait for you to listen! This podcast is for the high-achieving woman, that's you!, wanting to find balance and calm around food and in other areas of her life. Don't worry, balance here isn't about juggling a million balls in the air all at once… and doing it perfectly. It's about slowing down enough to listen to your own body, trusting your voice, and finding what healthy means for you. If you're ready for this new kind of balance, one where you feel calm around food and confident in yourself, then you're in the right place! Subscribe for encouragement in how to feel your best self every week! Today on Courtney Beyond the Cake, I’m welcoming my friend and beauty guru, Courtney Anderson, CEO to five Spa Trouvé locations here in Utah. In 2011, Courtney discovered her passion for the beauty industry when she started working as a manager for a local spa. While Courtney was falling head over heals for her job, the company was unknowingly about to go out of business. But, by the time she found out about the companies financial woes, she had already fallen in love with the work and was determined to save it. Nine years later, Courtney is the CEO of five Spa Trouvé locations and has evaluated Spa Trouvé to one of the premiere medical spas in Utah.Today, we’re talking about how Courtney turned a failing company into a success story, as well as her thoughts about how the beauty industry has changed over the years, how it’s changed our perceptions of self love and self care, her must have skincare services and products, and the one product she says no woman should live without.
Coming into business, Courtney knew that she wasn't going to have it all figured out in the beginning. However, having a strong support system and not being afraid to ask questions propelled her into a smooth and successful launch of DRIPD Collection Beauty. From the moment her friends at North Carolina Central University knew of Courtney wanting to get into the beauty industry, they immediately offered their help in any capacity she needed. While Courtney was never a big makeup person, she loved the idea of a quick beauty routine that allowed her to highlight her natural beauty in the process. This holds true in the products she offers from lip glosses to personalized boxes designed to cater to each customer. But how has Courtney been able to manage being a business owner and elementary school teacher all in the midst of a pandemic? Tune in to episode 32 as Courtney discusses her experiences this year, how she plans on making the ladies as cozy as possible, gives a shoutout to those who have played an integral role along the journey and much more! To watch the video version of this interview, please click here. Courtney Monsma is an actor, singer and dancer from Queensland, Australia. Most recently Courtney performed in the Australasian tour of Disney’s Aladdin, and also appeared in the Australian tour of MAMMA MIA! understudying the role of Sophie. During her years of training, Courtney played Charity in Sweet Charity, Carmen in The Life; toured with the production of I Love You, You’re Perfect Now Change, and in her final year played Maria in West Side Story. She appeared in Opera Queensland’s Kiss Me Kate and was a 2018 finalist for the prestigious Rob Guest Endowment Award. Courtney is currently playing Katherine Howard as part of the original Australian cast of SIX the Musical. While Courtney was born in Adelaide, Australia, she relocated to Queensland when she was fairly young, and currently resides there. Courtney started as a dancer at a young age, and after seeing her sister perform in a community theater production when she was 8 years old, she quickly followed suit. This is also when she discovered singing, and finally felt, ‘ah yea, this is for me” - she knew this was what she wanted to do with her life. “There’s nothing that compares to the feeling I get when I sing,” she told us. Courtney quickly became involved with the community theater scene, and upon graduating from high school sought a way to hone her skills and pursue performing as a career. She found herself at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University and graduated with a Bachelor of Musical Theatre. Portraying Katherine Howard in SIX the Musical is not for the faint of heart, and Courtney reflected on how much she’s grown and learned throughout a journey that's included auditions, rehearsals, and performances. She shares how Howard taught her about getting rid of the white noise in her head, and that there is no time for feeling down on yourself because it only holds you back. Throughout auditions and rehearsals the queens were instructed to never do anything that wasn’t authentic to themselves as individuals. As a result, she has also gained a lot of confidence - confidence that will carry her into her next starring role as Anna in the Australian tour of Frozen. Courtney shares that if it hadn’t been for SIX, she doesn’t think she’d be ready for Frozen. “SIX taught me so much about myself”, she says, both personally and as a performer. In this episode, we talk about: Realizing at a young age that performing was what she wanted to do with her life Starting SIX and being in a room full of performers she’d always admired from afar Her reality living with anxiety as a actor Her love for NYC, and being there the week SIX was supposed to open The new sort of pressure she feels as she prepares for Anna in Frozen The time she was able to spend chatting with Patti Murin (Frozen on Broadway’s Anna) Connect with Courtney: IG: @courtneymonsma Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. On this episode of Teaching Change, Courtney and Jerrid discuss the importance of self-care. This is a buzzword that has been bandied about lately because it is vitally important to check in with yourself to make sure everything is okay. By self-care, the Teaching Change hosts are referring to taking the time to nurture your well-being both mentally and physically to ensure you are being mindful of your own needs. People in the social entrepreneurship field are driven by their passions to improve the lives of others and their communities. So much so, that they may not pause to do a self-assessment of what they need to function at the most optimal levels. This could lead to burnout. While Courtney has never ventured into social entrepreneurship, she had her own bout of burnout as a middle school Language Arts teacher. Her downfall was that her unique circumstances did not allow for adequate downtime in which she could rejuvenate her mind and spirit and gear up for the next day. As a public school teacher, Courtney felt like her work followed her everywhere and thus she was constantly on the clock. Whether it was grading papers, preparing lesson plans, or classroom management, her teacher responsibilities took over her identity until there was room for little else. Thus, she burned out after only two years.Your career choice and workplace can greatly affect opportunities for self-care. Jerrid recounts a work environment where employees felt they needed to work long hours in order to demonstrate their value to the employer. This did not quite mesh with how Jerrid wanted to live his life as a dedicated father, husband, and family man. He made the difficult decision to quit, which carried its own pressures so he could lead the type of life he’d envisioned for himself. This turned out to be a great decision on his part. It was, after all, one of the roads that led him to Valencia where he feels very fortunate to have landed. At his current place of employment, Jerrid has the freedom to explore his varied interest and still maintain a healthy work-life balance. The show concludes with Jerrid’s account of a friend who suffered years of unfulfillment at the job before he’d finally had enough. Although the friend was making a six-figure salary, the company’s culture and mission were not aligned with what he needed to be motivated in the work. Twenty years later the friend finally resigned from the position and began working for a nonprofit that fits better with his purpose. Although Jerrid acknowledges the friend probably took a sizable pay cut, the purging of a toxic work environment and philosophy more than made up for the difference.Would you be willing to make that decision? Questions such as this one are important to consider as we continue the conversation. Difficult decisions and sacrifices may have to be made in the name of self-care. For if we don’t take care of ourselves first, we won’t be of any use to those we aspire to help.
