Our annual panel of pop culture experts Brodie Lancaster, Alison Willmore, Hannah Diviney and Jared Richards gather for a dissection of the zeitgeist. Baby Reindeer, The Bear and hot rodent men: lt has been a ferocious (and sometimes feral) year for pop culture, and it seems that we're not slowing down any time soon. On the occasion of the 2024 Melbourne International Film Festival, host Brodie Lancaster is joined by Vulture and New York magazine film critic Alison Willmore, disability advocate and star of the new Australian film Audrey Hannah Diviney, and ABC Entertainment Reporter Jared Richards to discuss the most influential and popular film, TV, podcasts and books of the past 12 months. Expect hot takes served with a dash of frenzy and a healthy dose of reality-check. The event was presented in partnership with The Wheeler Centre and Melbourne International Film Festival as part of MIFF Talks, a program presented by the University of Melbourne. It was recorded on Saturday 17th August at The Wheeler Centre. Featured music is 'The Golden Hour' by Sarah, the Illstrumentalist. The Wheeler Centre acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which the Centre stands. Taylor Swift's concerts have shifted the economic climate of entire cities; she has prompted US Senate hearings about major ticketing reforms and industry-defining conversations about copyright and ownership; and her public and private life have driven tabloid fodder for decades (Kimye drama, anyone?). The pop icon's genre-bending career and reputation have made waves across the globe, and her cultural influence will be felt for generations. Earlier this week at The Wheeler Centre, Rolling Stone journalist Brittany Spanos and host Brodie Lancaster delved into the mythology and influence of Taylor Swift. At this exclusive Melbourne event, Spanos analysed Swift's meteoric ascent to become one of the most celebrated and prolific musical artists of all time, and her ongoing impact on fandom, popular culture and the music industry. Brittany Spanos's visit to Melbourne was part of the University of Melbourne's Swiftposium conference. This was her only public event. “You know, for me, I loved reading, but I didn't exist on those pages and when a child of any age doesn't exist in our mainstream, in our books, in our stories, they start believing they're not important.”  – Melina Marchetta  Looking for Alibrandi broke new ground with its honest and empowered portrait of an Italian-Australian teen coming of age in 1990s inner Sydney, speaking authentically about systemic racism in Australia from a migrant perspective.   For generations of teens, the beloved novel (and later cult movie) is a foundational story. Its exploration of family, womanhood, first love, identity and othering still resonates with readers today, 30 years after its release.  Now, Melina Marchetta's novel has been adapted for the stage. In this special collaboration between the Wheeler Centre and Malthouse Theatre, Marchetta joined playwright Vidya Rajan, director Stephen Nicolazzo, and the film's star Pia Miranda to discuss Looking for Alibrandi's journey from page to screen to stage, the art of adaptation, and the enduring impact of this Australian classic.   This conversation was hosted by Brodie Lancaster and recorded at the Malthouse Theatre on 18 July 2022.  The bookseller was Hill of Content Bookshop.  Music: Pastel Colours by Sarah, The Illstrumentalist Support the Wheeler Centre: https://www.wheelercentre.com/support-us/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Brodie Lancaster, left, and Meg Wolitzer, right Meg Wolitzer's latest novel, The Female Persuasion, is about public pedestals and feminist friction. Wolitzer herself is a feminist powerhouse who wrote her first novel, Sleepwalking, while still at university. A precocious talent, she was mentored by the famous essayist and screenwriter Nora Ephron. Today, she's the author of 12 acclaimed novels, including The Interestings and The Uncoupling. Three of her novels have been adapted to screen, most recently The Wife, starring Glenn Close. Always witty and always wise, Wolitzer's work is preoccupied with the everyday struggles and successes of American women. Wolitzer's own career trajectory – from young upstart to prominent novelist and teacher – makes her especially well placed to explore the tensions of intergenerational feminism. Her latest novel, The Female Persuasion, examines ideological purity, mentorship and compromise in the contemporary feminist landscape. It's Wolitzer at her piercing and satirical best. Boris Johnson picked up the prime ministerial ball as it came loose from the back of the scrum, Scott Morrison baseball-capped his way back into government, and Trump impeachment talk turned to (some) action. We said goodbye to towering figures in literature and politics, including Toni Morrison, Bob Hawke, Les Murray, Clive James and Mary Oliver. And we farewelled meowing figures of the internet. (R.I.P. If you google “clash between AFL player and umpire” it’s likely you will find footage of this episode's guest, Dr Courtney Lai. An AFL goal umpire for 61 matches, in 2013 he was sidelined for 18 months with a horrific knee injury following an on-field incident with Western Bulldogs player Liam Picken. While Courtney eventually returned to umpiring, his time in rehab sparked an interest in orthopaedics. Already a practising doctor, in 2017 he hung up his flags to take up a PHD at La Trobe focussed on ACL injuries in elite AFL players. He took some time out from his studies to fill us in on the secret world of AFL umpires and to indulge Sarah's morbid interest in knee injuries. Our artwork was designed by Steph Hughes, and our theme song is 'Here if You Need' by Wet Lips.
