“Were you ready?” they ask. You'd think I'd have a ready answer to a question asked so often. One I'd prepared earlier.Maybe it is less question and more response when people learn I was appointed CEO of the Richmond Football Club at age 24.This thought comes to mind when I am interviewing Collingwood Premiership Captain Nick Maxwell, the perfect guest “In the Arena” in Grand Final week. Since retiring as an AFL player after a remarkable career, Nick has been Leadership Coach and Mentor of Melbourne Storm in the NRL, Greater Western Sydney and Collingwood, and is now CEO of the wonderful Eclat, where designCEO is proudly located. The first team Nick Maxwell captained was Collingwood, the biggest and most famous in the country. He was never a captain of any of his junior teams because that honour generally went to one of the better players, which, in his own judgement, was never him. This judgement prevailed when the hundreds of names were called in draft after draft, but never his. He was good enough to be invited for tryouts over pre-season with AFL clubs, and the effort this asked of him, motivated by hope rather than expectation, only to be rejected time and again.Eventually, Collingwood did take a chance, but the stakes were low, as were the expectations, selection #15 in the Rookie Draft, which effectively made him the 99th player selected that year.It took him a season before he won a place in the Collingwood senior team, and after only twenty games, he was asked by legendary captain Nathan Buckley to join the player leadership group.“Were you ready?” I wonder.I have never really had a good answer, but as years pass, I now understand when taking on anything difficult, be it a personal goal, ambition or desire, or a circumstance or situation you find yourself, my answer is now:“You are never ready”.Nick Maxwell is now In the Arena. Welcome to the seventh episode of the series, "Empowering Others to Lead with Purpose" featuring Peggy O'Neal, American born Australian lawyer, Chancellor of RMIT University and former president of Richmond Football Club (AFL).  Peggy O'Neal's journey into leadership began in the coal fields of her US hometown, where she grew up surrounded by a tough, working-class environment. A pivotal influence in her life was her mother, who instilled a sense of purpose and encouraged Peggy to break barriers by studying law, making her the first in her family to do so. Fast forward to her new home in Australia, Peggy's leadership path has been marked by significant achievements. She became a leader in law, served as Chancellor of RMIT University, and was President of the Richmond Football Club, leading the team to three premierships in just four years. Central to her success is her unwavering sense of purpose—creating opportunities and uniting people. This sense of purpose is reflected in her approach to leadership: fostering trust, building connections, and consistently repeating these behaviours until they become defining habits. ______________________________________________________________________________________ In complexity, the anchor that ensures progress is made is the identification of a shared purpose, underpinned by the values and principles that enact that purpose. Often referred to as the ‘north star', purpose galvanises action, creates the imperative and provides the context to reconcile what matters most. It is the thing that shapes who and what we want to become. It is through this lens, the Leadership: Pivot to Purpose podcast series, hosted by Dr Peter Collins, will feature the perspectives of eight, multi-sector, influential figures, with each episode offering insights into how individuals navigate challenges and lead with courage, wisdom, and resilience. From personal anecdotes to practical insights, this series promise to engage, enlighten, and empower listeners to embrace purpose-driven leadership in their own lives. _______________________________________________________________________________________

Cameron Schwab has been through a lot: losing his father, being publicly sacked as a CEO twice, clinical depression and being diagnosed with cancer. Cameron was CEO of the famous Richmond Football Club at 24, the youngest in the history of the Australian Football League, and spent the next 25 years as the CEO of three AFL clubs, the second longest-serving CEO in the modern game. All the CEO roles he took on had something in common… the clubs were at their lowest ebb, uncompetitive on the field, and facing massive financial challenges. He saw it through, found success, and now takes that deep experience in leadership in professional sports and business to mentor CEO's.   LINKS   Cameron Schwab https://www.designceo.com.au   The Mojo Sessions website www.themojosessions.com   The Mojo Sessions on Patreon www.patreon.com/TheMojoSessions Full transcripts of the show (plus time codes) are available on Patreon.   The Mojo Sessions on Facebook www.facebook.com/TheMojoSessions   Gary on LinkedIn www.linkedin.com/in/gary-bertwistle   Gary on Twitter www.twitter.com/GaryBertwistle   The Mojo Sessions on Instagram www.instagram.com/themojosessions   If you like what you hear, we'd be grateful for a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. Happy listening!   © 2023 Gary Bertwistle.  All Rights Reserved.

Brendan Gale became CEO of Richmond in late 2009, and delivered this speech to the whole of the football club in the rooms in the old Punt Road grandstand in early 2010. it was a vision for the future, and it was mocked in the press at the time. Richmond had not won a final for 30 years and had competed in finals twice in the previous fifteen. Gale outlined a plan to win three premierships in ten years. It's an articulate corporate speech in a sporting environment with brave goal setting. The Great Coaches: Leadership & Life

Our great coach on This episodes is Peter Giles. Peter is currently the Australian under 19 Head Coach. A role he has had since 2011. He started playing baseball in 1969, finished in 1994; and began coaching in 1995. He won a championship in 1998 with Sandringham; and then led Essendon in the Victorian State league to 6 successive championships from 2011 to 2018. He has also coached the Australian U17 Baseball Team in 2015 was voted baseball Victoria Coach of the year. In 2020 he launched the Academy of Baseball Excellence that he now heads up. Peter is coach with a heightened focus on leading his club, not just the team of players who suit up each week. He is comfortable in his leadership philosophy in the way that only coaches with a long history of success and failure can be; and believes that his role is to be as fair as possible to everyone. His background in teaching enables him to communicate in way that engenders both belief and motivation and this translates into a mantra of asking his players to know their role and do it to the best of your ability, which you actually also hear him say in the opening theme for this podcast. This discussion with Peter is a masterclass in the art of coaching, it was actually one of the first interviews we did when we started this podcast, and his ideas have shaped many of the questions we have gone on to ask other Great Coaches. Some of those ideas include: The importance of not being afraid of bringing in support staff who are more knowledgeable or better than you in certain areas. His advice on building culture by firstly have shared belief across the coaching group in the game plan, then ensuring that every member of the team, either playing or in a supporting role, feels valued, and then thirdly connecting the teams mission to something bigger than the present team or season. Where culture is driven by the coach it is not sustainable, instead It must be led by the senior group of players in the team, and the example he gives of the All Blacks and Richmond Football Club to illustrate this. And his view that the role of the coach is to ensure that the players have a good work life balance so that they don't burn out or have their motivation diminished. I am very excited to share this interview with you and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
