This week's Velo Podcast takes a tech-heavy turn while Mike Levy is away, while Josh and I (Alvin Holbrook) dive deep into the latest gear, updates, and trends shaping cycling. We kick things off with Wahoo's firmware updates. Credit to Wahoo, here, as they pushed a series of updates to its first-generation bike computers, experiencing mass file corruptions and problems, a long eight years after the first Elemnt computer was released. Next up are the new Shimano S-Phyre RX910 gravel shoes, the brand's first gravel-specific model under its flagship line. At $480, they promise elite-level performance with a supple upper, serious stiffness, and clever pontoons that offer road shoe-like stability. Still, their pedal sensitivity and premium pricing sparked a lively debate on whether “gravel-specific” is worth the investment. We also tested Zwift's new over-ear headphones, boasting 50-hour battery life, sweat resistance, and active noise cancellation. At $249, they're aimed squarely at serious indoor riders, but are they really better than in-ear buds? From there, Josh shares highlights from the MADE Handmade Bike Show in Portland. Standouts included the fillet-brazed artistry of Ira Ryan, the aero-focused, 3D printed titanium No.22 Reactor, and a bold paint scheme from Black Magic. The show reinforced that road and gravel continue to dominate, but also showcased fresh experiments, like Moots' monster-cross machine. Finally, we wrap with a bit of talk before Alvin's last criterium of the season. What bike, wheel, and tire combo should he roll with this weekend? With options like the Canyon Aeroad, Factor Monza, and Specialized Tarmac SL8, plus the latest Roval Rapide CLX III wheels, there's a lot to discuss. Devin & James are back in the Den to celebrate the 50th anniversary of some fantastic and influential films coming from Asia in 1975! We start with one of our favorite monsters in the Kaiju classic THE TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA! We then take to the streets with Kinji Kukasaku's brutal yakuza tale COPS VS. THUGS. Then things get more kung fu classical in the origin story of one of cinema's coolest weapons, THE FLYING GUILLOTINE. After that, we hop on THE BULLET TRAIN (No, not the Brad Pitt one. The Sonny Chiba one!). Our cinematic traveling continues down under with the Australian/Chines co-production, THE MAN FROM HONG KONG. From there, we go completely off the rails with the cinematic cotton candy that is SUPER INFRAMAN. Finally, we get a taste of horror (and some other things we'd rather not mention here) in BLACK MAGIC. All of these films are from Japan or China, but we make sure to check in on the rest of the continent with shout-outs to YEONG-JA'S HEYDAYS out of Korea, THE RARE BLUE APES OF CANNIBAL ISLE from Malaysia, the Bollywood classic SHOLAY, and DERSU UZALA, the Academy Award-winning Russian film directed by Akira Kurosawa!

Satanism, Black Magic, and Devil Worshipping are terms that have been around since the Middle Ages. In the majority of cases today, people who follow this do so somewhat out of boredom, it drawing something in their angry, perhaps somewhat confused selves that they feel may be that edge that they need to express their inner feelings. And in most cases, it will go no further than a dabble with the ideology or symbolism, before they find it's not really for them, they see the light, and leave it behind. In some cases, they will maintain a lifelong commitment to Satan, but never going further than pronouncing that they follow his teachings. But in some extreme cases, such as in Germany, in 2001 - the tale I have brought this time around on The True Crime Enthusiast – the odd one or two go that bit further, and prove just how committed to Satan they really are…The episode contains details and descriptions of crimes and events, involving descriptions of injury detail, and instances of racist speech, that some listeners may find disturbing or distressing, so discretion is advised whilst listening in. Through the gifts of his newfound diabolic companion, Faust recuperates his vitality and youth, capitalizing on his new abilities in the effort to seduce Margherita, a beautiful but naive young woman from town. To assist in the magician's sensual escapades and dangerous liaison, Mefistofele provides him with a sleeping potion to drug Margherita's mother and therefore avoid detection during the lovers' tryst. The couple declares their love despite the rocky foundations of their infatuous and hastened affair. Afterward, the devil transports Faust to the top of a dark (and bald) mountain (sparsely populated by trees) to partake in a Witches' Sabbath: a Satanic ritual characterized by discordance, chaos, violence, lust, and power. Such dramatizations reflect the tremendous reality of and relationship between seduction and black magic: how the passionate fulfillment of lust and desire are the gateway to spiritual destruction and the development of egotistical powers. While modern people laugh and mock such metaphysical phenomena as the consequence and cause of blind fear, superstition, and ignorance, the truth is that such symbols demonstrate how anyone who cultivates lust with mystical devotion ends up as a demon, a being divorced from the eternal but awakened with powers in, of, and for evil. Such powers are driven by selfishness and produce terror and pain, emotions that are so masterfully depicted in Boito's terrifying music and choruses in this act. Learn how to conquer lust and to comprehend the essential nature of witchcraft, sorcery, and the machinations of the Black Lodge (the congregations of infernal entities) so as to enact spiritual self-defense and the protection of our spirituality from dark forces. Xeno Medisium Jannah Paradise Herbal Medicine To Cure Diseases Caused By Black Magic Attacks (Sihr) From The Holy Quran & Al-Hadith Podcast Edition by Xeno Medisium & Jannah Firdaus MediaproBlack Magic (Sihr), also known as sorcery or witchcraft, has a complex history in Islam. In Islamic tradition, black magic is seen as a forbidden and sinful practice. It is believed to involve the invocation of evil spirits or supernatural forces like jinn race (demon) to cause harm to others. The Holy Quran explicitly prohibits engaging in black magic and warns against its dangers. Throughout Islamic history, there have been cases of individuals practicing black magic (sihr), often for personal gain or to harm others. These practitioners are considered deviant and are condemned by mainstream Islamic scholars and communities. Islamic scholars have written extensively on the topic, emphasizing the importance of seeking protection from black magic through prayer, recitation of specific Quranic verses, and maintaining a strong connection with Allah SWT (God). Islamic teachings encourage believers to rely on faith, trust in Allah SWT protection, and seek refuge in His guidance to guard against the influence of black magic. In Islamic belief, there is a connection between black magic and the jinn race. The jinn race are supernatural beings created by Allah SWT (God) and are mentioned in The Holy Quran. They possess free will and can choose to follow either good or evil. Some individuals who practice black magic may seek assistance from the jinn in order to carry out their harmful intentions. Black magic often involves invoking and seeking the help of jinn in order to cause harm to others. This can include using specific spells, rituals, or incantations to gain control over the jinn and manipulate them to carry out the practitioner's desires. However, it is important to note that engaging in black magic is strictly prohibited in Islam. It is worth mentioning that not all jinn are involved in black magic, and not all black magic involves the assistance of jinn. Black magic can also be performed without the involvement of jinn, using other means such as spells, potions, or other supernatural forces.

The Secret Teachings
Genetically Modified Black Magic (7/29/25)

The Secret Teachings

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 29, 2025 120:01

A collection of lab-reared mosquitoes were dumped on Hawaii in June 2025. In 2008 the Gates Foundation paid Jichi Medical University $100,000 “to design a mosquito that can produce and secrete a malaria vaccine protein into a host's skin.” In 2010 Science Magazine online called these mosquitoes “flying vaccinators.” Years later genetically modified mosquitos were released in California and Florida, along with countries like Brazil. The reasoning varies: to stop invasive species, to breed away disease carriers, and to prevent malaria. But when you introduced modified species into a local population then you are introducing invasive species. When you try to limit population numbers you could end up killing all the local population. These experiments have all but failed completely. Besides, Malaria has a standard set of symptoms and most cases in the US and even Japan are from Africa, Southern Asia, and South America. There are virtually no domestic cases and so we know that mosquitos and bacteria do not cause malaria. So what's the point in releasing engineered insects? Perhaps it has something to do with black magic. The Japanese KODOKU and Chinese GU systems of magic involve the use of insects to inflict harm or obtain protection. Poisonous and venomous insects are placed in a container where they fight and die. The last surviving insect is then used to create poisons or protective charms. Consider this: genetically modified insects are released in large contained areas to fight insects carrying serious diseases. They are intended to kill off the local insect populations, at which point the invasive modified insect can be used to inject proteins into the local human population. In other words, this isn't just mad science, it's KODOKU.*The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. For the 350th episode of Back To One, I sat down with an actor who brings me great joy when he's on the screen, the one and only David Malinsky. He wrote the blurb himself for this episode. It follows: Peter has only met David three times in person before. His filmography includes Onur Tukel's “Abbey Singer/Songwriter,” “Black Magic for White Boys,” “Poundcake,” Theodore Collatos' “Tormenting the Hen,” MG Cinecraft's “A Moderate Folly” and more. Dave has also done standup comedy, cabaret singing, and YouTube Video Essays. But Dave thinks it's vital to situate acting within art and human history, now and in the past.  This meandering conversation covers spirituality, identity, railroads, gaming, and how all art—and all consciousness—is related to each other. But Dave, a self-described hardline materialist, would just call it how things work. Visit his YouTube channel here. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from  Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft.  Follow Back To One on Instagram

Today on another encore edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Dick Smothers Jr., son of, who else, comedian & musician Dick Smothers, one half of the comedy team, The Smothers Brothers. On this episode, we explore some pretty intense stuff as we get into what it was like growing up with a famous father and a famous uncle whose comedy was a touchstone for comedians of the 1960s. And while Dick Smother's was perhaps one of the best straight men in comedy, the story Dick Smothers Jr. tells us story is anything but rosey. We learn about the attention his dad craved and the strained relationship they have to this day. Moreover, we talk about heavy metal and Dick Jr's 80s band Kamikaze, his fascination with Alister Crowley as well as black magic and his one-time career choice to become an adult actor. Yes, this episode delves into another kind of celebrity, pornography. One we haven't spoken about this before or acter this episode first aired but we delve into it extensively here. We discuss why Dick Jr. chose to become a porn star, why Dick Jr. didn't change his name because…well….he already had the best name in blue movies and what it was like talking to the press knowing his famous name would draw attention. And therein lies the rub. Pun intended. This episode is a frank and serious discussion and we learn a lot about why Dick Jr. chose that career path, his relationship with his father, the challenges of being in ‘the industry' and much more. Puritans beware! So if black magic, pornography and heavy metal were on your Bingo card for this episode of the podcast, you are in luck! Because this is another episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast where everyone has a story. This one is likely one you have never heard before. Take a listen. Yo-Yo Man fans, hang onto your hats!
