Movie of the Year: 19991999 Returns!96 Movies Enter, 16 Will SurviveThe Year Was 1999. Everyone Had a Discman. And Movies? Absolute Bangers.Back when the Taste Buds first covered the films of 1999 on Movie of the Year, they were young, naïve, and only picked eight movies. Eight! That's adorable. Now they're older, wiser, and full of regret—so they're returning to give one of the greatest years in movie history the full 16-slot bracket it deserves. That means eight more movies, a new perspective, and a much deeper dive. This premiere episode is where it all begins: they take 96 of the most iconic, beloved, and deeply weird movies of 1999, and start hacking our way down to the Sweet 16. Expect heartbreak. Expect joy. Expect someone to irrationally defend The Haunting like their life depends on it.In This Episode:The full list of 96 movies—from cult classics to forgotten flopsNostalgic tangents about Y2K, dial-up, and Taco Bell commercialsHeated debates about what counts as “Movie of the Year–worthy”Emotional breakdowns over the ones we had to cutThe 16 movies that will define the season—revealedWhy 1999?Because it gave us The Matrix, Fight Club, The Blair Witch Project, Being John Malkovich, 10 Things I Hate About You, and like 30 more that would be any other year's #1. It was the year movies peaked, and we're finally giving it the coverage it deserves—with twice the movies and at least three times the yelling.Tell Us We're Wrong:You definitely have opinions. Good.Hit us up on Instagram @yourpopfilter, or email us at popfilterco@gmail and let us know which movies should have made the cut, which ones absolutely shouldn't have, and how mad you are that we even considered Inspector Gadget.Don't Miss a Single Episode:Make sure you subscribe, rate, and review wherever you get your podcasts. That way, you'll be there for the whole ride—from 96 to the Final Four, all the way to the 1999 Movie of the Year. This one's gonna be a journey. A journey to find the single greatest movie out of all of the films of 1999.

Escuchar audio

What's up, dudes? It was 1989, and the Griswolds had an amazing and quirky holiday staycation adventure with fantastic music woven throughout! Kevin Williams from ‘Tis the Soundtrack joins me to discuss the fabulous song selection and Badalamenti's orchestral score to “National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation!”A supposed 10th Anniversary Edition soundtrack CD was released by Warner Brothers in print-on-demand kiosks for their Six Flags Magic Mountain theme park. Apparently, only seven thousand of the twenty thousand allotment were sold, and so the rest were shipped back to Warner Brothers. A company acquired the lot in a bulk sale, and decided to sell them online. Or did they? Spoilers: the entire story was a hoax to help sell bootleg copies of the album. One piece of music—a Christmas Medley—allegedly by Badalamenti is actually by John Williams from the “Home Alone 2” score! The score to the movie was indeed composed by Angelo Badalamenti, known for his eerie, synth-heavy, atmospheric work with director David Lynch. Badalamenti wrote an unobtrusive orchestral hit peppered with comedic polkas and uptempo motif-laden piano trios. The glockenspiel Advent calendar theme is ethereal, while the orchestra weaves traditional carols through search section seamlessly. The needle drops are timed to perfection with hits by the Moonglows, Bing Crosby, and Gene Autry. Mavis Staples flawlessly sings the gospel-tinged pop titular song “Christmas Vacation.” It's a shame there hasn't been an official release!Animated intro music? Check. Sweet string melodies? Got ‘em. Tuba lead over a guy in a bathrobe? Definitely! So grab your Discman, put on your headphones, and listen to this episode on the music of “Christmas Vacation!”‘Tis the SoundtrackYouTube: @TisTheSoundtrackIG:  @tisthesoundtrackCheck us out on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Totally Rad Christmas Mall & Arcade, Teepublic.com, or TotallyRadChristmas.com! This week the Bayer siblings are thrilled to welcome their friend, musician Simon O'Connor! You may know Simon as the lead guitarist for Modest Mouse, touring bassist of MGMT and bassist/vocalist of Spiral Heads, but do you know if he's a total herb? Or if you are? Don't be so sure you can answer this question until the three of us define the personality characteristics of a herb and do our best herb impressions. Plus, we reminisce about having a Discman in the nineties: The time Jonah sold his Discman to Vanessa and then immediately took it back, the time Simon's discman was stolen by a former friend-turned-bully—and ponder if the Discman was even a good invention in the first place given all the skipping? Finally, in a rousing new game that was definitely named by Jonah, CONGRATULATIONS, YOU BAKED YOURSELF, we decide which of three culinary dishes we're most excited about making a comeback, despite never knowing any of them existed in the first place. So don't be a herb and check out this fantastic episode, and be sure to pre-order Simon's band Spiral Heads' new album TIL I'M DEAD, which comes out this Friday! You can also learn more about Simon and his music over at his Instagram page. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the US. Clifford Thornton explores the impact of technology on medical devices, cardiography and treatment, with Jim Cagliostro.   Episode Introduction  Clifford explains the two types of echocardiograms, the benefits of 3D versus 2D echoes, and why it takes $72 million and a decade to launch new medical devices in the US. He also highlights how spending on cardiovascular care has risen to $600 bn a year and offers a Top Gun analogy to emphasize why healthcare leaders must carry out competitive and environmental scans.    Show Topics   Two different types of echocardiogram  Advances in technology have transformed echocardiography 3D echo versus 2D echo A $72 million barrier to new technology  Choosing the right medical device for your patients Staying ahead in your market (learning from Xerox)      05:50 Two different types of echocardiogram (echo) Clifford said there are two main types of echo, surface and invasive.  ‘'So to really answer your question, echo is basically an ultrasound or sonogram of the heart, which is why we also refer to it as a cardiac sonogram. So those who perform this test are called an echocardiographer technician or a cardiac sonographer. There is a movement to change it to an echo specialist. Some people are not so thrilled with the technician annotation. I don't have a problem with it, but there's some discussion around that just for everyone's awareness. Of course. So echoes, they can be broken down into two main types and they basically use a different type of probe. One is on the surface and one is invasive. I say invasive, but through the esophagus. I guess it is invasive. The more common and more easily performed surface echo, or you can call it a vanilla echo, is the transthoracic echocardiogram, which we also call a TTE as an acronym….So that's the one type and the other, and this is a little more complex, this requires a healthcare team, a clinical team. So it requires the performing cardiologist, whereas the surface echo and echo tech can do it alone, just the tech and the patient.‘'   10:34 Advances in technology have transformed echocardiography Clifford said both patients and healthcare employees benefit from the impact of technology.  ‘'Look where we've gone from our Texas instrument scientific calculators to smart watches. And I remember always running with the Sony Walkman, the Sony cassette Walkman and the Discman, and now we have iPods. So echo is no different. It's amazing, right? To answer that, echocardiography and its related technology because as we know, it relies a great deal on technology. So meaning the design and engineering of the cardiovascular ultrasound systems, it has actually evolved immensely since the beginning, and that was about 40 years ago. You see as techs, we joke around about those early machines that were beef, like little tanks to push around. And just like other techs, they've gotten more and more compact and lighter. And that of course makes techs' lives much easier and more ergonomically friendly. I'm sure you know from a nurse's standpoint, how important that is. Actually, the number one occupational injury for nurses is moving patients in the country, ergonomics. So we as techs love these new machines, me included. So for example, one thing I love about what's called the Philips iE33 system, it's one of their more modern systems is that the monitor actually pivots for angles in different directions to so many physicians. It's really neat. So since I'm actually an oddball, lefty scanner, most echo scanners are righty, for me that's super helpful. Most ready techs, they're facing away from the patient, but the positive for lefties is I'm facing the patient. They can actually look at the screen. So this type of flexibility with the machines, it's a godsend, especially for bedside echoes where we go and do the echo in the unit.''   13:17 3D echo versus 2D echo Clifford said 3D echoes give a more real perspective of the heart, enhancing interventional procedures and patient care. ‘'Really though, the most meaningful advance for echo, what really has changed, it has been the growing availability use of 3D echo versus the standard 2D. So there's been a growing availability of 3D echo over the last decade or so. And today I would say there's about 75% of availability of 3D echo….about 35% of all US labs probably use it routinely. So you can see it's become pretty standard. The clinical benefit, it may not be readily apparent sometimes, but I thought it was pretty neat. I definitely found it to be a more real perspective of the heart. But there really is a benefit to the 3D TEE, and it actually plays a pivotal role in the growing prevalence of interventional procedures. Especially things like transcatheter valve replacement. Some other important advantages of the 3D echo include it eliminates geometric assumptions, quantifying complex geometric shape volumes, the ability to view structures from any perspective, and also assessing a lesion in what we call simultaneous multiplane. So with 2D echo, as tech cardiologists, we have to kind of imagine things, but the 3D gives it more of this real visualization.''   17:17 A $72 million barrier to new technology   Clifford said it takes a decade and $72 million to launch a new medical device in the US.  ‘'On average, it costs about $72 million to start a new medical device in the United States. You need a good amount of money. It's a dynamic, but very challenging intersect between the medical science and business. But I would say the main challenge with all this is it takes around a decade, and I know you're very familiar with this, it takes around a decade or more to develop and refine and test these medications and new medical devices. What could happen in the span, the market evolves and you see new entrants, the economy changes. So this timing aspect, Jim, it's really difficult, extremely difficult. Also, unfortunately, we've seen a lot of biotech, venture capital firms actually exit the United States or pull back significantly. I think the risk is scaring a lot of people. Very risky. For those launching something in this space, some advice. I would say, you really want to make sure it is quite novel and really have a compelling case and the proof of concept, that's your bread and butter. That's a critical early milestone.''   20:39 Choosing the right medical device for your patients  Clifford explained the key elements hospital leaders should consider in choosing the right medical device.  ‘'Yeah. That's another very important question. It's become difficult to sort through it. You're right there. So my underlying philosophy that I learned from experience and also by studying a lot of successful leaders is that you want to always aim for high quality and strong results. Okay? You want to have your binoculars pointed in the right direction and everything should fall behind that. With that being said, I think the key for hospital leaders is, one, they want to look at how the technology, how it fits into their existing suite of services and how it aligns and how it can bolster their existing services. Two, they must consider if they have the infrastructure, the staff and the resources to support a certain program, say like what we talked about, their percutaneous valve replacement. If they don't have the tools, it doesn't mean never, it means now they need to start building and selling a business plan to amass that capability on all levels, which means the tech, the staff, and related expertise and the infrastructure. Build a business case for that. There are then... Of course, we talked about before with the medical device tiers, the regulations. You got to take that into account.''   28:59 Staying ahead in your market (learning from Xerox)   Clifford said competitive and environmental ‘'scans'' are vital with rapid advances in technology.  ‘'And finally, I think this is really key. We talked about this, the piece of change. We talked about the windows of opportunity and so forth, and what we need to do or leaders need to do, and I mean they need to do this constantly and also rigorously, is to do what we call from marketing people, we talk environmental or competitive scans. And the reason for this is you never know what technology or competitor can come out of a field or to identify new opportunities. A lot of people know Xerox was invented some of the early internet technologies, but they just didn't capitalize on it. They maybe didn't look at the competition out there. And now we have Google and there was Netscape and then Google, and the leaders out there. Now Google almost dominates online advertising. So you want to be aware of what's out there…. on average today, companies have only about a three-year window to make a profit on a given product or service.''   Connect with Lisa Miller on LinkedIn Connect with Jim Cagliostro on LinkedIn Connect with Clifford Thornton on LinkedIn Check out VIE Healthcare and SpendMend    You'll also hear:    Inspiration from his uncle, and a passion for fitness; Clifford's journey into cardiology.  Putting the power of a human heart into context: ‘'They say in a lifetime an average heart pumps enough volume of blood to fill more than three super tankers. So just to give you a picture that equates to around 1 million barrels of blood.'' Why a good pair of shoes is critical working in cardiac care: ‘'….for one of my first or early echo jobs in Naples, Florida, the job description listed the ability to walk, I kid you not. seven miles per day as a requirement for the job.''   Keeping the focus on people: ‘Just an example, in New York state, they just made a certain nurse to patient ratios mandatory, meaning it's a state law in their intensive care unit. So they have to adhere to these nurse to patient ratios in all New York ICUs now. So managers, they need to work around all these kinds of things and take it into account.''   The cost of treating cardiovascular disease: ‘'…shortly after Medicare was instituted, cardiovascular spending in the United States jumped to around 100 billion a year within 10 years. Today that figure how much we spend on cardiovascular to treat cardiovascular disease in the US is 600 billion a year. And globally, I would say it's around 1 trillion.''   What To Do Next:   Subscribe to The Economics of Healthcare and receive a special report on 15 Effective Cost Savings Strategies.   There are three ways to work with VIE Healthcare:   Benchmark a vendor contract – either an existing contract or a new agreement. Full article here… From the article: It was around this time that a baby-faced Beale Street regular came into the studio. His name was Riley King, but everyone called him the "Beale Street Blues Boy," a name that later boiled down to simply "B.B. King." With singles like "Mistreated Woman" and "She's Dynamite," King became one of Phillips' first successful artists, and far from the last. In early 1951, King recommended Phillips' services to the Mississippi-based band "Kings of Rhythm," led by teenager Ike Turner. In their haste to fix an unlucky flat tire on a road trip to Memphis, one of their amps fell out of the trunk and onto the pavement. Upon arriving at Phillips' studio, guitarist Willie Kizart plugged in the amp and got a horrible, fuzzy, distorted noise. The speaker cone of the vacuum tube amp seemed to have broken in the fall, or maybe was damaged during a rainstorm that befell the band on their way to the studio. Whatever the case, the amp was shot and the group, crestfallen, feared their shot at recording a song was over before it had even started. Phillips, however, had a different idea. Running to the diner next door, he grabbed some paper—the legend differs on whether it was brown paper or day-old newspaper—and stuffed it into the amp, giving it a new, unique sound, a muffled saxophone-like bass. For Phillips, this wasn't just a quick fix, but in fact something better: something different. When you listen to the the song widely hailed as rock and roll's first, "Rocket 88," you'll hear exactly what he created. A sound that helped launch a genre. "Instead of trying to hide that sound," says Jerry Phillips, "he brought it to the forefront." While this may not have been the first instance of fuzz tone or distortion in a song, it was the first commercially successful song with this soon-to-be-iconic manipulation of sound that would go on to define songs from The Kinks' "You Really Got Me Going" to The Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" to The Beastie Boys' "Sabotage." Rocket 88 (Original Version) - Ike Turner/Jackie Brenston Fun facts about the CD Sony worked with Philips to develop the first CD. The Sony CDP-101 was the first CD player and it cost around $900 in 1982. Compact discs themselves were at first extremely expensive at $30 each. CDs were manufactured at only two facilities in the entire world, each owned by Philips and Sony. The manufacturing process was tedious and required masked technicians in labs. There were soon six factories, and the price per disc dropped to $25, and then to $20. As venture capital poured in, there were soon 40 factories manufacturing discs. The first portable CD player was released in 1982, but it was not possible to skip songs you didn't like. That technology came out in the mid 1990's. Sony's first portable CD player, the Discman D-50, was introduced in November 1984. At first, the D-50 was not profitable but as the product gained popularity, it soon became profitable, and Sony began to create a portable CD market. The Discman range was later re-named to CD Walkman. The first ever CD was a 1982 album by Swedish pop group Abba called The Visitors The biggest selling CD of all time is the Eagles 1976 Their Greatest Hits album, which sold over 38 million copies If all the CDs in the world were piled up, they'd circle the Earth six times Vinyl sales in 2021 topped CDs in the United States for the first time in 30 years. According to data from Billboard, 38% of all album sales in the country last year were in vinyl format, accounting for over 50% of all physical album sales. This marked the first time more vinyls were sold than CDs in the US since 1991. [Tapper Jewelry Ad] David Young: Stephen, we're doing a flashback today, right? We're going back to when, the seventies? Stephen Semple : Yeah. And we're also doing a little bit of a departure because we're actually going to talk about a company at the stage that it was very... Still, it was already large. It was already successful, but I still think there is a lesson to be learned. And what we're going to talk about is the birth of Sony Walkman. David Young: The birth of a Sony Walkman. It was a thing before Guardians of the Galaxy for you kids that are listening. Stephen Semple : It actually played this little thing called a cassette. David Young: We can go into all kinds of minutia and trivia about cassettes and their interaction with pencils or big pens. Stephen Semple : I'll be wearing my shirt that has all the records and cassettes on it. I dress inappropriately, I apologize to everyone. David Young: And maybe we should offer a mixed tape prize. Stephen Semple : There we go. So anyway, going back to the birth of the Sony Walkman, it all started with the Sony chairman. And I'm going to butcher the name, so I apologize. Masaru Ibuka. And when he traveled he loved listening to music. Now Sony had this product... It was actually called the Pressman. It was for recorders. So it had a recorder and a microphone, but it also had the ability to play things back. So Sony had this product. And when he traveled, he took it with him and he would listen to music on planes and things along that line. Stephen Semple : And he found it was just too heavy. He said, "This thing is just way too heavy." And so he went back to his designers and he said, "Look, let's modify the Pressman. Let's get the weight down. Let's remove the recording feature. Let's remove the speakers. Don't put a radio in it, but basically let's strip this thing down that basically all it does is play a cassette through headphones. That's what this will do, nothing more. No speakers, no record, no radio, no bells, no whistles, no nothing." David Young: It doesn't even have to be much bigger than a cassette itself. Stephen Semple : Right. Yeah. And if you go back to the early Walkmans, they were not... It was funny, when CDs came out and went to the Discman, the Discman was actually bigger than the Walkman- David Young: But it had to fit a CD in it. Stephen Semple : Yeah. It was about that thick, but not much bigger than the size of a cassette and very reasonably priced and highly durable and all those other things. But here's where it gets interesting. His designer said, "No one's going to be interested in this. This is a stupid idea. No radio, who's going to want it? No speaker, no record. No. People carry around... They carry the boombox on their shoulder. And that's what they want because there's a group of people wanting to listen to the music, and we want to be able to record stuff and all that." Stephen Semple : And so he faced this tremendous pushback, but he said, "Look, we're doing it." And then he took it out to retailers and retailers are like, "No one would be interested in this. No one's going to want this. This is a dumb idea because it's got no speaker, no record, no radio. That's not how people consume this.
