A podcast about film as Evan (co-host of the Voice Over Picture Show) analyzes eclectic movies, film trends, and news that is relevant. These trips into film will spotlight movies that don't always get their shine.
This episode has been in the making for a long time. Joined by non-binary film fanatic/influencer Dylan Mentis, tackle the show's first big horror franchise. It seems we like the talk about the thirds in movies series, huh?! We dive into Wes Craven's legacy, his long-lasting influence, and the influence of this series in the horror genre. This was a film that was still around for Blockbuster Video and Hollywood Video days. This film covers trilogies, celebrity, trauma, and with a huge meta-horror influence. Still resident 20 years later the film has grown into starting conversations about the Me Too Movement. There is some serious social commentary but all we love Scream as a series, specifically Scarem 4. And if you haven't seen the film then I won't spoil it here (but we will spoil the series' best cameo). #LetKirbyLive
Jumping right back into the underseen films of yesteryear, we are tackling this '80s gem. Part teen drama, mostly sci-fi adventure, part sci-fi action movie, My Science Project has it all for genre nerds. It came out in the height of '80s time travel sci-fi 1985. I jump into the connections the cast with other films of the genre. How this movie does teen of the '80s better than most. And this is the first film the podcast has covered starring Dennis Hopper. It's a milestone that has to be celebrated there. *Note: this new release of the film was done by Kino Lorber.
After a bit of a hiatus, we are back! This is the first dip into the MCU and the bigger money-making film we've covered on the show. Zimmy is back again to help us dive into everything Thor, Loki, and Asgard. Also, there is a surprisingly a lot of Star Wars chatter in this episode. I don't know why to be honest. Maybe because they are both own by Disney? We share our love for the Goldblum. There are no WandaVision spoilers, just a heads up. This is the funniest movie in the MCU catalog and we will give you all the reasons why. Did you ever know there is someone who connects the MCU movies to the Fox Marvel films and it's not Stan Lee? Come listen to find out who that is...
This episode was recorded the week of the insurrection. Parker is back to co-host this episode on a film that is still controversial, Hard Candy. We go deep diving into the film's hard topics, the way the film plays out, and the interesting way it's a one setting film. And just like the last episode, we go a bit off the rails covering the filmography of Patrick Wilson and Elliot Page. Also, Spider-Man, the Twilight Zone, the A-Team movie, and much more come up. So come inside and take a seat. This episode is gonna a little wild.
This episode was recorded in 2020. This is the season one finale. On this episode I'm gonna dive into the wild year film had in 2020. There was the pandemic that changed everything. We had a streaming war with a few new streaming services pop up. VOD became a huge deal. And then there were the delays from huge tentpole films to small indie films. Nearly everything was pushed back because of the worldwide pandemic. I'm also going to jump into my honorable mentions plus my top ten films of the year. It is a varied list much like this show. Sit back and take in the last episode of the year that was 2020. I just want to thank all the guests I had on the show this year. You all are great and I hope to have you all back in 2021.
In the second to last episode, I take a dive into a film that I don't has ever left Netflix. This Luc Besson produced (and co-written) sci-action thriller is one of those movies that was made for this podcast. I wouldn't call it an underrated classic but it's a film with a great performance by Guy Pierce and some excellent chemistry from our two leads. The film is also hip dip in controversy of the not-good kind. But that kind of gives the film some charm and influences. Grab a few beers, some friends, and come with me on this B-movie ride.
Episode 24: (Rough Cut Edition, there were some sound issues with this episode so please be gentle) For #NoirNoviember we have @TheRealMattC on the show to discuss this two-time Oscar-winning film that deserved more. It's a stacked cast in a last '90s Noir cop thriller that is all around one of the best films of its era. We go deep into the film bit also bring up Titantic, all things Russell Crowe, Christopher Nolan, Guy Pierce, and Lockout. This is an episode that goes all over the place in the best way. We even get into a deep love fest for James Cameron, the Dark Universe is mention and even Babe. Come for the movie, stay for the nerdy movie chat. You can also listen to Matt on Monster Never Die Podcast sponsored by Super Yaki.
Episode 23: In our last episode of this spooky season we are going out with a bang. ZimmyCakez joins to show to cover this horror classic. There are deep dives into the story and how it compares to the book. We don't gloss over the wild and stressful production. Haunted houses are a big thing and experiences in the real life are shared. There might be some opinions on Stanley Kubrick, Stephen King, and Tom Cruise (what?!) Are there actual connections that brought this production together? You'll just have to listen to find out. Stay til the end for some news!
Episode 22: It's time for creature features during this spooky month. This B movie action-horror monster film has some pretty fun performances and at times decent practical effects. Is it mean? Yes. Is it fun? Yes, it is. Is it better than Anaconda? You'll just have to listen to find out. Grab a Lone Star and go back to the late '90s with us. Also, this episode might be a bit mean...
Episode 21: We go back to a different time, a more free-spirited time but a time where slasher/killer roamed our multiplexes. The only slasher film (I wish there was more time to cover more) I'll be covering during the spooky season is a doozy. This film comes with creative killers, a whole lot of blood, an interesting score, a lot of Giallo influences, and one of the wildest movie endings. I think this was also an influence on the Scream series but don't quote me on that. Let's sit by the fire and get some spicy but deadly Kibaba.
Episode 20: Our second film into the spooky month celebration, I'm diving into a zombie movie. But not just any zombie movies. This hilarious zombie comedy from Elijah Wood, SpectreVision, and Leigh Whannell is a gem of a film. I give this small movie it's cult status and explain why it plays with zombie troupes very well. Also, I make my bid for the podcast to be sponsored by Peacock. I even explain what would happen if I turned into a zombie. Have your candy ready, your beer needs to be flowing, and join me for a really awkward time in middle school but a fun midnight movie.
Episode 19: We are kicking off spooky season on the show with an oversized episode. From the horror blog Another One For The Fire, the creator Parker stops by to chat everything but this movie. Along with the longest cold open in the show's history, we get into so much horror and film in general. From Evil Dead, Elisabeth Moss, Would You Rather to Dennis Hopper, Land of the Dead, and Freddy Kruger gloves this episode has it all. It was an awesome way to start of the limited series on the show. If you want to here two LGBTQIA horror nerds get really nerdy, grab a beer and take a listen. Follow Parker on Twitter.
Episode 18: Before we get all spooky, we are going back to a time when Michael Cera wasn't Scott Pilgrim, for a hilariously awesome and music-fueled romantic comedy. There are cameos delight, great queer representation, a lot of heart, and some moments that will hit you in the feels. It's a deeper film than the normal romantic comedy with some great talent behind it. Ask your self are you ready for Where's Fluffy or are you an R U Randy fan?!
Episode 17: This is the biggest film we covered here on the show and for that I needed help. I enlisted one of my best friends in the world Twitch Streaming @zimmycakez to tackle this massive film. It's '90s spy action at it's best and still holds up today. Bond is at his Bond best dispatching enemies, blowing things up, and making some awful and some good one-lines. Don't worry we get deep into Famke Janssen oddly and violently sexual henchwoman. Don't ask us how but the show goes into Dark Castle horror movies, Nicolas Cage and The Expendable movies. Even tries to explain the plot of Face/Off, you'll be confused. Also, a drug-related conversation featuring Bowie, Led Zepplin, and The Rolling Stones? This episode has it all. Stay till the end of the episode for the announcement of the now having exclusive episodes on Patreon. Make sure to click the link above and follow Zimmy on all her social media!
Episode 16: It took sixteen episodes but we have a guest. Tonight's supersized episode is a reunion of the Voice Over Picture Show with Shannon Roy coming on to discuss this icon '90s movie. We go into the fashion, the music, lasting effect on teen films and the impact on '90s culture. As you might know, with a VOPS reunion we jump on to the sidebar about Kingsman and Disney. It's one jam-packed episode. So get your best fashion because the dynamic duo is back...for one episode.
Episode 15: This week I'm taking a trip back to the '90 with an underrated action cult classic. The debut of Chow Yun-Fat to America and the directorial debut of one of the best American directors working today, Antonie Fuqua. The film oozes influences of John Woo and Tony Scott. Full of bullets, bodies, cool character actors and a great action turn from Oscar winner Mira Sorvino. This is one film that if it's in your blind spot, you might want to clear up.
Episode 14: Because I'm on a Scott Adkins kick, (inspired by a Twitter thread) I decided to tackle one of his best VOD action films. This throwback to '70s style action dramas and '80s buddy comedies is a lot of fun. Jesse V Johnson makes his name as an action director the big studios should be seeking out. This is R-Rated action for adults that most lighthearted but very entertaining. When is international action star Scott Adkins going to get his big break? Buckle up, get a good drink and let's take a ride but remember, watch the whitewalls.
Episode 13: It's been a long time coming. But I'm finally covering one of my favorite '80s film that is a cult classic. This is movie had mad scientists, zombies, and kick female protagonists? Yes, it does. Does the film have a cool new wave look and soundtrack? Oh hell yeah. For some odd reason, this episode also takes a trip to the sidebar with JCVD, Chopping Mall, and the entire Nightmare on Elm Street. Grab your best outfit and let get this apocalypse going!
I Love Movies U Should 2 is a podcast for nerds. It's a podcast for those movies you miss, those movies you love, and the movies you haven't fallen in love with yet.
Episode 12: Concluding gross-out comedy July, I'm taking the show back to the year of...2019 when things were better and we didn't know what was coming. Ending the summer than with an unexpected bang was the Seth Rogen produced comedy Good Boys. This Superbad-inspired comedy about tweens trying to get their first kissing party is one of the sweetest, funniest, goofiest, and very in the now comedies of all time. There are so many things that hit home and the film has a good positive message under al the swearing and r-rated gags. Pucker up and hang on for the craziness.
Episode 11: Still in the middle of gross-out comedy month, I'm heading back in time to 1998. South Park just finished up season one, sports was hitting a new stride. The co-director of Ariplane! teams up with the creators of South Park for a goofy sports comedy that was ahead of its time, Baseketball. It's also a film that is very cringeworthy, has a lot of South Park connections, and predicts the sports landscape for years to come. I take a dive into this film of my teenage years. Is it smart? Does it hold up well? Is there a ridiculous amount of slapstick jokes? Grab a beer, take your seat, and find out.
Episode 10: In the most controversial episode to date, it's time to go in on an '80s cult classic. Kickstarting R-Rated comedy month with a bang, I'm covering Revenge of the Nerds. It was (maybe?) still is a favorite of mine from the mid-'80s. But the film does have many problematic issues. There is enough to goodwill done that the film might not come off as bad as other cult classics but it's still in the doghouse for a lot of people. Will I change your mind about the film? You'll have to strap in, get the beer flowing, put on your favorite specks and find out.
Episode 9: Tonight is the last episode in the Pride month spotlight. Starting and finishing with an Oscar winner, Evan is covering the beautiful and emotionally driven drama A Fantastic Woman. The film follows Marina, a transgender woman, as she deals with loss, self-doubt, self-exploration, and triumph. The film is incredibly directed by Sebastián Lelio with a start turn performance from Daniela Vega. This drama with a hint of fantasy is one that Evan been dying to cover. This month gave him the opportunity to. Sit back, have some wine, and get ready for all the feels.
Episode 8: In the middle of Pride Month, Evan goes deep into the hit Love Simon, the hot romantic comedy of 2018. Dealing with coming out and life issues that mirror his own, this is a perfect example of a film with a gay lead for the masses. Evan covers the power this film has and how it sits in the pantheon of rom coms and John Hughes comedies. The film is hugely important for the landscape of films in general and getting representation on screen.
Episode 7: In the middle of the Pride Month celebration, Evan goes in the way back machine to cover an indie LGBTQIA gem. This small comedy-drama is more about two girls falling in love than dealing with coming out. It actually has a very positive message about queer love. There is some acceptance about the queer characters that are fitting in this time we live in. Also, there is some ridiculousness with a bit of reality mixed it. The film dug up some history for Evan. Grab some wine and get ready for a trip to the past.
Episode 6: For this Pride month spotlight, Evan is covering LGBTQIA movies all month long. First off is the Best Picture winner Moonlight. Barry Jenkins' beautiful film about a black male struggling to find his way, his life, and his sexuality in the south. This poignant movie is perfect for the situation that is happening all over the USA. Expertly shot, well-acted, and thought-provoking, Evan hits all corners of this film. He brings a little personal history as well. Stand up for this one.
Episode 5: All the talk, all the hype has been building up to this. The Snyder Cut of DC's Justice League is real and it's coming to a living room near you in 2020. Evan takes a deep dive into the craziness that has grown onto an entity of its own. Rumors are debunked and then brought up again. Information is dispersed, prices are spoken about and theories are made. This will be very against the grain episode of the show. Evan might not be as happy as you think. Could it be some trepidation from this DC fan? Strap in, grab a beer, and get ready as it's Snyder Cut universe and we are only mere citizens for Gotham.
Episode 4: It may be early for Halloween but Evan is continuing with a horror theme but diving into the underrated '80s cult classic Night of the Demons. There's ghost stories, conjurings, wild dance numbers, gore, demons (obviously), gratuitous nudity, and punk rock. There may be a lot of gushing over this film. Once companion piece connection is made to another '80s cult classic directed by Dan O'Bannon. (Do you know what film that is) And Linnea Quigley is pronounced the first scream queen to grace the show. Since this is the first horror movie that the show is covered she gets that title for now. Sit back, get your apples out, and take a ride to Hull House.
Episode 3: Tonight's episode is a hard one to talk about. I being a huge fan of the horror community felt the need to speak up about the latest controversy from last week. An article written by Joe Bob Briggs saw daylight and people needed to speak up. I wanted to say my piece about this issue since I've been embraced by so many people of the horror community. Being a person of color, I thought I could add my thoughts about the inclusivity and exclusivity of the horror community. The two articles I reference you can read here: Terry Mesnard "Queer Mutants Deserve Better" https://www.gaylydreadful.com/blog/queer-mutants-deserve-better and Johnny Donaldson's "Horror Has A Leadership Problem" https://medium.com/@coinoperatedboy28/horror-has-a-leadership-problem-c6211ac6b46b
Episode 2: Evan takes a hard look at the noir classic from Akira Kurosawa, Stray Dog. This classic film about a rookie cop (played by the great Toshiro Mifune) hunting down the thief that stole his weapon is a film that has influenced the cop genre for decades. The post-war filmmaking was a technique not seen that often in films of this genre or every again. Take a seat and let Evan drop you into a world of cops, robbers, a desolate landscape, and the grimy world of Tokyo in the late '40s.
Episode 1: Evan takes a very deep into how the 2020 pandemic has affected the film world. Also, he might moan about certain movies that have moved release dates at least a year. This is more of an in-depth episode that's covering nearly every big and some small films that have been pushed, moved, and on indefinite hiatus. Of course, there was some huge news that broke about one of these films. That will be covered in the next episode. Set back, grab a drink as Evan takes you on the trip that was 2020 movie year.
This is a new side podcast coming from half of the team of the Voice Over Picture Show. Evan has a hard love of film and a wide variety of movies. He will be talking about movie issues in general. But there are many many films he would like to gab about but doesn't get the chance to. Expect the odd indies, weird sci-fi, horror, and underrated action films to be in the schedule. This episode will introduce the host himself and what he is planning. Get ready for that wild energy, the movie knowledge, and a more positive spin on films during these tough times.
