In this episode, I sit down with Amy Barry to unpack the lessons she's learned throughout her career in Retail Marketing and she shares insights that are valuable no matter where you are in your own journey.Amy's career took a major turn when she said yes to what seemed like a short-term opportunity, a three-month contract at The Good Guys. That decision ended up shaping the next decade of her career, allowing her to gain invaluable experience and work her way up the corporate ladder. From there, she spent nearly five years at Spotlight Retail Group before making the jump to the supplier side in her current Head of Marketing role. We dive into what those transitions taught her about taking risks, advocating for herself, and stepping into leadership roles before feeling 100% 'ready.'One of the biggest game-changers in her career? A lightbulb moment during DISC Behavioural Model training that completely shifted how she worked with her team and managed up. Amy shares how this understanding of different work styles transformed her leadership approach and deepened her relationships at work.We also discuss the influence of great (and not-so-great) leaders in shaping her own management style and how she continues to evolve as a leader. And finally, we wrap up with a conversation about the power of dreaming bigThis episode is packed with career wisdom, real talk, and some seriously valuable takeaways. All aboard the Hype Train, folks! In this episode of Night School Horror, we're diving headfirst into the chaos of upcoming horror flicks. We break down Death of a Unicorn and the new Final Destination film, because we all love a franchise that makes us scared of everyday objects, unless its unrealistic!. We also get hyped for Mortal Kombat 2—Karl Urban as Johnny Cage? Yes, please. Then, we sink our teeth into Michael B. Jordan's vampire flick Sinners, discuss a Alison Brie and Dave Franco body horror film that sounds like a therapist's (Tommy...) worst nightmare, and—wait for it—debate the Anaconda reboot starring Paul Rudd and Jack Black (yes, you read that right). Will it be a good or just a really expensive meme? Plus, we close things out with Lessons from the Cigarette Smoking Man, because every horror fan needs something to learn.

It's not every day that you get to meet such a diverse and knowledgable wildlife photographer like Eli Martinez. We are blessed in this episode to have Eli share his thrilling and unique experience of capturing a large mating group of sperm whales near Dominica Island. This rare occurrence was captured just weeks ago on Jan. 29, 2025, and Eli describes how lucky he was on this recent trip. But that's not all. Eli discusses many of his approaches to photographing the broad range of dangerous predators in water and on land, and you'll be surprised to hear and see what he and his tour company are able to achieve and the level of interaction he has with these potentially dangerous animals. Eli discusses the challenges of photographing shy creatures like anacondas and the importance of debunking many of the myths surrounding predatory animals. Eli also reflects on his upcoming adventures and the significance of sharing these experiences with the world. In this engaging conversation, Eli Martinez shares his thrilling experiences in wildlife photography, transitioning from underwater adventures to capturing land predators. He discusses the challenges of high-altitude photography, the importance of respecting wildlife, and the invaluable role of guides in spotting elusive animals. The conversation also touches on the excitement of marine life encounters and the significance of time spent observing wildlife. Eli emphasizes the joy of unique experiences and the connections formed through his adventures while also providing practical advice for aspiring underwater photographers.Sound Bites"It's a privilege to work with these animals.""Witnessing a mating group of whales is magic.""Mating behavior is extremely rare to see.""Anacondas are very shy and prefer to hide.""The water clarity is a challenge for good images.""Capturing a photo of a tapir underwater is my dream.""I want to share the other side of these animals.""I hope someone deserving wins the bear camp giveaway.""It was a phenomenal experience to see those animals.""We saw the cats four out of nine days.""The guides are priceless in finding those cats.""The recovery in Tonga is going really well.""You don't really get to know them in a week.""People get tattoos of our logo, it's so special.""A GoPro is perfect for underwater photography."Chapters00:00 Reflections on the Pandemic and Travel Adventures02:56 Eli's Unique Experiences with Sperm Whales06:01 The Significance of Mating Behavior in Sperm Whales09:08 Exploring the Mystique of Anacondas11:55 The Challenge of Photographing Shy Creatures15:09 Debunking Myths About Predatory Animals18:01 Capturing the Beauty of Nature's Giants20:54 Upcoming Adventures and New Experiences40:36 Exploring New Adventures Together42:05 The Shift from Water to Land Predators44:57 Photography Techniques: Underwater vs. Land47:43 Challenges of High-Altitude Wildlife Photography50:51 Success in Capturing Snow Leopards54:40 The Importance of Social Media in Wildlife Photography56:44 Recovery in Tonga: A Personal Touch01:00:21 The Thrill of Marine Life Encounters01:01:38 The Value of Time in Wildlife Observation01:03:23 Cherishing Unique Experiences and Connections01:05:12 Essential Gear for Underwater PhotographyLinksInstagram: @SDMDivingWeb: www.sdmdiving.comFacebook: facebook.com/sdmdivingBear Camp Giveawayhttps://www.instagram.com/p/DFWXG04y8TY/Thanks for listening to the Beyond the Wild Podcast. In today's Daily Fix:Nintendo's president has commented on the Switch 2 price at an inverstor meeting. Sorry, no pricing was actually revealed, but he knows consumers want something affordable. The original Switch launched in 2017 at $299 USD, and it's widely assumed the Switch 2 will cost more than that. But how much more? Let us know what you think is too much in the comments. In other news, EA CEO Andrew Wilson had thoughts on why Dragon Age: The Veilguard wasn't the gaming touchstone they hoped it would be, and we're not sure he's taking away the right lessons here. And finally, in movies news, there's a new Anaconda movie coming, and of course Jack Black announces the new cast with a song.

Nicole Qualtieri is an outdoor writer and editor, a conservationist, and a committed outdoorswoman. Over the past decade, she's worked with some of the most notable brands in the outdoor industry, including MeatEater, Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, and GearJunkie, and she has bylines with many well-known outdoor publications, such as Outside, Modern Huntsman, and Backcountry Journal. But despite being plugged in with many of the best names in the outdoor business, she and a few creative friends decided to go out on a limb and start their own outdoor publication– one that focuses on substance over clickbait, depth and vulnerability over the silly quest for virality and search engine optimization. The name of the project is The Westrn, and it combines the best parts of online writing and journalism with a printed, hold-it-in-your-hands newspaper that ships to subscribers four times per year. As you'll hear Nicole describe, the topics covered by The Westrn's include hunting, conservation, and a wide range of outdoor adventure. But the deeper point of it all is to build a tight-knit community of engaged outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes, who appreciate the value of nuanced writing, thinking, and publishing. As many legacy outdoor media brands have become controlled by private equity and now focus on scalability over creativity and quality, the role of people like Nicole and her partners at the Westrn are all the more important— they are taking a real risk to make the Westrn a reality, and I greatly admire their vision and commitment to action. Nicole and I connected online– she was at her home in Anaconda, Montana and I was here in Colorado Springs– and we had an enlightening conversation filled with lots of laughs about her fascinating life, career, and the creation of The Westrn. We discussed her upbringing in what she describes as a high-control religious cult and how hunting and the outdoors were her way of working through some of that childhood trauma. We discussed her non-traditional career path, which included a stint as a stand-up comic, and how she worked her way into the outdoor industry. We discuss the importance of hard work, preparation, and grinding, and how self-confidence is generated from those activities. We discuss the current state of the outdoor media industry, the financial challenges of making it as a freelancer, her writing process, contentment vs happiness, favorite books, and of course, her goals for The Westrn. Nicole was also kind enough to offer some discount codes for M&P listeners, so follow the appropriate links in the episode notes or on the website to get 20% off annual memberships to The Westrn and/or 20% off single issues of the print newspaper. Alison shares her journey from academia to industry, emphasizing the importance of statistics and data science in her career. She explains her role at Anaconda, focusing on developing secure and compatible distribution of Python packages and managing the community repository, Anaconda.org. The conversation covers the significance of product management in open source projects, particularly those with corporate backing, and how these roles can help in balancing user needs and business goals. In addition, Alison shares her thoughts on the challenges and strategies for maintaining open source projects without corporate support and touches on the ‘palmer penguins' project. Click to download now! [00:01:13] Alison discusses her transition from academic research in cognitive science to industry and data science, emphasizing her passion for statistics and education. [00:02:41] Alison explains her work at Anaconda, focusing on product management and the Anaconda distribution, aiming to ease the use of Python and R packages in the industry and academia. [00:07:14] Alison shares her previous experience as the first PM of data science communication at Posit (formerly RStudio) and her role in enhancing data science education and product development. [00:12:49] Richard and Alison explore the challenges of sustaining open source projects without corporate backing and strategies for maintaining personal and project health in the open source community. Alison discusses common mistakes companies make by confusing project management with product management in open source projects. [00:17:18] Richard asks about the skills needed for developers to adopt a product-oriented approach. Alison suggests that successful product-oriented developers often have high empathy for end-users and experience with the pain points at scale, which helps them anticipate and innovate solutions effectively. [00:20:49] Richard expresses concerns about the sustainability of smaller, community-led open source projects that lack corporate backing and the structured support that comes with it. Alison acknowledges her limited experience with non-corporate open source projects but highlights the difficulty in maintaining such projects without institutional support, and she shares her personal challenges with keeping up with open source project demands. [00:27:41] Alison stresses the importance of clear goals and understanding the implications of joining larger ecosystems, reflects on the need for clarity about the desired outcomes when joining larger ecosystems, and shares examples of successful and unsuccessful engagements in such settings. [00:29:52] She discusses alternative sustainability models, including paid support and subscriptions. [00:33:00] Alison brings up the example of Apache Arrow and the challenges it faced with corporate sponsorship. [00:34:23] We wrap up with Richard acknowledging that not all open source projects require significant funding or formal business models, and Alison explains the ‘palmerpenguins' project she did at the beginning of COVID. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes Last Wednesday morning, Marvel Television treated fans to the long awaited first official teaser trailer for Daredevil: Born Again. The trailer was met with universal praise for its dark tone and brutal depictions of violence, elements that it shares with the beloved Netflix series. The nine-episode first season premieres March 4 on Disney Plus. In some Captain America news, it was confirmed that Brave New World will have a total runtime of one hour and 58 minutes, which ties it with Ant-Man & The Wasp as the seventh shortest MCU flick to date. It will also be the first Captain America film under two hours long. It's brand new news today, Ryan Gosling is in negotiations to star in Shawn Levy's future Star Wars film. Levy's film has been in development with Lucasfilm since 2022, and getting Gosling seems like it could be a major step in getting the film truly off the ground and into the galaxy far, far away. Last we knew, the film was not to be set within the Skywalker saga The use of AI has been a frequent hot topic for Hollywood in recent years, reaching a seeming fever pitch during the 2023 WGA and SAG AFTRA strikes as a major point of negotiation. While the dust seemed to have settled a bit with the resolution of those strikes, new controversies plaguing high profile films and filmmakers have brought the discussion back to the forefront. First, Taxi Driver writer and First Reformed director, Paul Schrader, opined, in a since much lambasted Facebook post, the benefits of using a platform like ChatGPT for film ideas, in contrast to waiting the months it can take writers to ideate. Elsewhere, awards season favorite and Oscar hopeful, The Brutalist, has come under fire after an editor revealed generative A.I. was used to enhance the authenticity of the lead performers Hungarian accents. Emily Beecham and David Krumholtz have signed on to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, portraying the parents of Kara Zor-El. Production on the DC Studios film commenced last week. Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for “Until Dawn,” the live-action adaptation of the popular 2015 PlayStation horror game. The film is currently set to be released on April 25th. After nearly 15 years of shaping Spider-Man's adventures at Marvel Comics, Eisner Award winner Dan Slott is making the move to DC. The acclaimed writer will make his DC debut on Superman Unlimited, a new monthly series featuring art by American Vampire co-creator Rafael Albuquerque. Westworld star Thandiwe Newton and Silo's Steve Zahn have joined Paul Rudd and Jack Black in Columbia's comedy reboot of Anaconda. Nintendo has revealed its Switch 2 console with first look images and a teaser trailer, confirming a 2025 release. Uma Thurman has joined the cast of Dexter series Dexter: Resurrection and will star alongside Michael C. Hall. Filmmaker David Lynch, who created celebrated counterculture classics like Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and co-created Twin Peaks, has died at 78. A24 and Picturestart are teaming with director Charlie Polinger for a revisionist and darkly comedic take on The Masque of The Red Death, based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allen Poe. Sydney Sweeney is currently in negotiations to star. After extensive negotiations, IMAX has secured a deal to exclusively screen Greta Gerwig's Netflix adaptation of "Narnia" in theaters worldwide for two weeks, beginning Thanksgiving 2026, before its streaming debut that Christmas. Joel McHale has joined the cast of Scream 7 and will play Mark Evans, the husband to Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott. A24 has released the first trailer for upcoming horror film Opus, which hits theaters on March 14th. The film stars Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich, Murray Bartlett, Juliette Lewis, and Amber Midthunder.

It's our first podcast episode of 2025 - so of course, we have to join the discourse of the news that dominated the last few months of 2024 - closed and closing roller coasters. Roller coasters like Scorpion at Busch Gardens Tampa got a send-off, while others, like Kingda Ka and Anaconda did not. Did these coasters need to close? Did the parks owe fans a send-off? Are there probably plenty of factors at play as to why these parks didn't give a send-off? Are coaster enthusiasts always going to ensure that they're the main character in any story? These answers and more as Andrew, Eric, and Larry bring the Coaster101 Podcast into 2025! As a post-holiday treat, Marvel Animation dropped its first look at Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, premiering in January. The short teaser trailer gives us a good look at the Hudson Thames-voiced Peter Parker and a glimpse of Norman Osborn, who is voiced by Colman Domingo. Other voice talent for the show features Hugh Dancy, Charlie Cox, and Vincent D'Onofrio. If you enjoyed diving back into the dark, broody, Gotham of Matt Reeves Batman universe during The Penguin, get ready to be disappointed. It was announced that The Batman II has been pushed from its 2026 release date to October 1, 2027. The film is set to begin production in the last half of 2025 and DC co-chief James Gunn cited Reeves working to perfect the script as some of the reason for delay. The October 2, 2026 date formerly held by The Batman II is being taken by a film coming from The Revenant director Alejandro González Iñárritu and Tom Cruise. The triumph of the sequel movies continues at the box office this holiday season with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 having a very successful opening before Christmas to a $62 million domestic debut and has now climbed to a worldwide total of $159.5 million. Though Disney's prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King, fell short of opening projections, the holiday season has been kind to the film as it currently holds a $221.7 million global box office. Wicked and Moana 2 still hold the overall crowns at the box office and Matt Eggers' Nosferatu, which debuted on Christmas Day, is sitting quietly but solidly at $26 million domestically for three days. The first trailer for A24 dark comedy Death of a Unicorn has been released. The film, written and directed by Alex Scharfman in his directorial debut, stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, and hits theaters in the spring of 2025. Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra recently told the Los Angeles Times that Kraven the Hunter is “probably the worst launch we had” in the nearly eight years he's been at the studio, adding: “I still don't understand, because the film is not a bad film." Vinciquerra also blamed the press for the bombing of Madame Web. Paramount+ has renewed the Jeremy Renner-led series Mayor of Kingstown for a fourth season. Netflix has released the first trailer for The Electric State, a sci-fi thriller from the Russo Brothers that stars Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, and Millie Bobby Brown. The film will debut on March 14. Paramount is moving forward with Sonic the Hedgehog 4 to continue the video game adaptation film franchise. Currently, the film is targeting a Spring 2027 release. With an animated series already in development, Sony Animation and Netflix are looking to expand on building on their Ghostbusters universe as sources tell Deadline the two are teaming on a Ghostbusters animated film. Insiders add that the project is still in early development but that Kris Pearn is attached to direct. HBO has renewed Dune prequel series Dune: Prophecy for a second season. Sony has announced that the 28 Years Later sequel titled 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple directed by Nia Decosta will hit theaters on January 16, 2026. The movie is the second installment in Danny Boyle and Alex Garland‘s planned zombie apocalypse follow up trilogy. Jared Leto will officially play villain Skeletor in the upcoming live action Masters of the Universe from Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Evil Dead Rise filmmaker Lee Cronin is writing and directing a new take on The Mummy for New Line. Horror powerhouses Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, along with Cronin's banner Doppelgängers, are producing and the film is currently set for an April 17, 2026 release. Sony has announced that filmmaker Tom Gormican's reimagining of the 1997 snake-focused horror movie Anaconda will hit theaters on December 25, 2025. Paul Rudd and Jack Black star in the new feature from Columbia Pictures.
