In this episode we look at the 1989 Jean Claude Van Damme movie that thrust JCVD into the limelight of 90's action movie super stars while simultaneously hammering the final nail into the Golan Globus coffin. At one time a Hollywood powerhouse, Cannon Films flew too close to the sun and found themselves undone by their own machinery. Cyborg was the ultimate result of this failure, a movie thrown together from the unused costumes and sets from unproduced movies. In the not-too distant future, mankind is reduced to medieval state by some unspecified disaster and if that's not bad enough, the survivors are being killed off by a pandemic plague. Luckily, the last scientists on earth developed a cure but need some pieces of the puzzle brought back from New York City. They turn one of their own into a cyborg and send her to get it but evil pirates kill off her escort and strand her there. Lucky for her, here comes Gibson Rickenbacher, a slinger who can fight back against the pirates and get her back to her lab. It's a real dumb good time. Derek GarrisonTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Derek Garrison. Derek is the principal at a public high school in Oregon. He is also a filmmaker. In this episode, we get to know Derek and what made him decide to be a public school educator, and more specifically a principal. We also find out if he is the cool principal or not! We take a small detour and discuss one of the most important topics of our generation: Bar-B-Que on a cross-country road trip. Then we get into Derek's filmmaking. He has made several short films and other projects; and we cover a fair bit of them. We do discuss his recent short film called 'A Hint of Menace'; which is available for free on YouTube. Then we talk about his new feature film called 'Van Damned'. The behind the scenes of the making of this film is very fascinating to me. The reason that Derek decided to make this film, makes him one of the coolest dad's I have ever come across. I won't spoil the reasons here, but trust me, there aren't a ton of fathers who would do this for this reason. Derek shares some of the journey and obstacles that were in the way, and how he maneuvered around and through them to get this feature made. 'Van Damned' is doing great things on the festival circuit, and at the time of this episode's release; SHOULD be available to stream on most platforms. Check your favorite streamers & VOD platforms. The pod's temporal pincer movement again gets fudged this pairing to bring to you a Lance Henriksen double feature (next week's The Terminator), skipping the late- and mid90s (good film, btw, but Jonah Hill uses no squibs in his 2018 directorial début so it won't be covered during Season 15) and Way of the Gun (covered in a future pairing and now's not the time or place for reactions).    Hard Targét features Jean-Claude Van Damme in the rôle of Chance Boudreaux, a spicy Cajun seamen stranded and out of work needing $$$ so he can pay dues to ship out again and a former military badass and nephew to Coonass bootlegger Uncle Clarence Douvée played by Wilford Brimley who enters over halfway through the film in an almost surprise cameo appearance that outstays its welcome until the happy ending in a Mardi Gras float storage facility deep in the bayou where the final standoff between gooddée JCVD against baddée Henriksen (playing an inflammable globetrotting businessman in the business of orchestrating homeless veteran hunts) results in his (Brimley's) seeming death only to be saved by his flask (yay!) but loses the last of his final stills batch (sad!) before the abrupt conclusion of the film. Oh, and there's a woman character played by Yancy Butler looking for her daddée, whom we learned was homeless and we learn was played by the writer of the film in its opening manhunting scene.
