On the latest episode of the podcast, Jamie Clearly doesn't understand what pilates is and how it works, Doug wants to watch a spinoff movie about a talking dog who only reveals his secret to Van Damme, and we both agree that we don't need sexual assault in our Kickboxer movie. Filmbuff Charlie Hildebrand, Author Corey Danna & Instagramer Fred Andersson unite to share why Jean-Claude Van Damme is a helluva popular talent to dedicate a podcast tribute to! Which of us came around on him while the rest of us found he varied movie to movie? What whacky MTV interview did he give back in the early '90s? Has he truly evolved for the better or is he still proving divisive as a genre talent? Heath and Brandon are finally blessed with a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie. On today's episode the boys talk through Sudden Death! Tape up your knuckles and prepare for a roundhouse kick of nostalgia as we dive into the final episode of our Jean-Claude Van Damme marathon with the most iconic double feature: Bloodsport (1988, dir. Newt Arnold) and Kickboxer (1989, dir. Mark DiSalle & David Worth). We're talking Frank Dux's (Van Damme) very real Kumite exploits (spoiler: they're not real), Bolo Yeung's terrifying pecs, and Michel Qissi's Tong Po licking glass like a man who's never heard of tetanus. Was Forest Whitaker secretly the best actor in Bloodsport? Why did JCVD's dance scene involve 13 hand claps and 4 splits? And most importantly—how many kids shattered their shins trying to kick trees after watching these movies? (Spoiler: too many.)Between debates on Kowloon Walled City's structural integrity (thanks, James), Frank Dux's CIA lies, and whether Dave Bautista could ever replace Tong Po, this episode is a no-holds-barred deep dive into the films that defined a generation of action cinema—and also our childhood orthopedic bills.Bonus Chaos:The Kumite Math: A 60-round tournament would require millions of fighters. Frank Dux is bad at numbers.JCVD's OnesieSuspenders: Fashion icon or spandex prisoner?Bolo Yeung's Pedestrian Beatdowns: How does one teenage Bolo Yeung strike fear in the hearts of strangers? Stick around for swimming records, ponytail combat, and the eternal question: Why did everyone in the ‘80s taste their own blood? Get ready for the most roundhouse-kick-to-the-face episode yet, where we dive into not one, not two, but THREE Jean-Claude Van Damme cinematic fever dreams and spiral off into pure sweaty chaos.
Phil joins us for his favorite JCVD film. Find our wonderful guest Phil @flixology101 and his site: flixology101.com
Welcome to part THREE of the Jean-Claude Van Damme marathon! This week, four roundhouse-loving maniacs dive into a triple feature so stacked it could only be held together with sweat and slow-motion spin kicks while it fights to resist spontaneously combusting from a denim overload and sheer gluteal power!
Starring Jean-Claude Van Damme (Guile) and Raul Julia (M. Bison), this 1994 cult classic was not received fondly upon initial release. Based on the Street Fighter II video games, this G. I. Joe-inspired take on the franchise removes the pesky street fighting and special powers from the characters. The movie is not all bad, however! JCVD and Julia provide excellent performances (considering the material they are given), and the film has lots of memorable dialogue. If only they hadn't completely dropped the ball with Ryu and Ken...
Action movie lovers, join Kevin and Eric on 6° of Schwarzenegger as we kick off an epic deep dive into 1991's Lionheart—a Jean-Claude Van Damme cult classic that's way better than it has any right to be! From the French Foreign Legion to underground street fighting, we unpack this 80s and 90s action flick's surprising craftsmanship, snappy dialogue, and standout performances by Van Damme, Harrison Page, and a shockingly good cast. We're talking production design that pops, vintage JCVD kicks, and a plot that actually makes sense—plus, how it outshines flops like Street Fighter. Whether you're a Van Damme fan or new to this hidden gem, hit play and tell us your thoughts below! #ActionMovies #Lionheart #JeanClaudeVanDamme #80sAction #PodcastReview
Send us a textTime to go huntin in New Orleans as the villains review John Woo's first American feature and one of JCVD's best… HARD TARGET!!!!!!
Welcome to the most chaotic cinematic therapy session this side of the apocalypse, where four degenerates shout over each other about spin kicks, bad wigs, and jacked robots who don't know what dongs are anymore. This week we're getting emotionally destroyed by a Jean-Claude Van Damme triple feature that roundhouse kicked us so HARD it sent us spiraling into a fever dream so intense it should come with a physician's warning and a complimentary bottle of body oil.
In this special mini episode, Hog set up a bracket of 16 of the best action hogs from cinema history, and now Daddy has to rank them as they compete head-to-head. Who will win? Is it going to be Stallone, or maybe Jean Claude Van Damme? Or a dark horse like Keanu Reeves or Kurt Russell? Stay tuned to find out! The time has finally arrived to traverse the JCVD universe, and we're starting it off with legendary mullets, exploding hockey rinks, time-traveling splits, and asking the most important question we've ever faced: Can JCVD really crack a walnut with his ass? (Spoiler: He said he could, and we believe him.)
Send us a textWe're going back to 2020 with this episode. Well before The Movie Loft Podcast was available on any streaming platform. As I've mentioned before, we have a whole unreleased first season in the back of our vault. It may not rival the Paisley Park archives, but there are obviously some uncut gems in there. And No Retreat, No Surrender is one of them. A 1986 classic featuring JCVD 1.0. I was truly shocked to find this in there. Trust me when I tell you that there are some unreleasable episodes. We were feeling our way to the middling road we find ourselves on today, and it wasn't pretty. So how does this one feel so current!? We had it! Then we lost it. When we found it again, I guess we knew it was time to launch the zeppelin. How in the world I got Tony and Phil to discuss so earnestly a movie they despised, I was made for this...at least this movie.
Moody and Groo continue their never-ending quest to find that elusive Van Damme movie. It's Jean Claude, OO7 and James Remar in The Quest (1996)! Show Rundown: Phil Collins' health, 2025 Royal Rumble, The Rock returns to Smackdown, Was Jean Claude Van Damme blacklisted? Rest in Peace E Honda, Four words of advice from Arnold Schwarzenegger, Charlotte Flair divorced, What does AC/DC stand for? Rambo: Last Blood now on Netflix, Van Dammit goes Retromade, The Quest is a writing and production nightmare, Did Peter MacDonald ghost direct this film? Frank Dux gets a writing credit, Roger Moore has heat with JCVD, Budget and Box Office, Critical Response, Groo savages The Quest, SNL 50th Anniversary Special and This is the Tom Green documentary on Amazon Prime. For our next episode of Van Dammit, there's nothing better than a Van Damme franchise! Moody and Groo cover Kill Em All and Kill Em All 2! For our next episode of Nothing Worthwhile, Moody and Groo cover the final season on Cobra Kai! Wil Ralph Macchio's wig make an appearance? No Retreat, No Surrender
The Rustic Signal has been lit! Although this episode is being released later than we'd hoped (although if we're reviewing a time travel movie, maybe our delays don't count this time around?), we're very excited for everyone to check out our discussion of the latest release from Rustic Films: THINGS WILL BE DIFFERENT (2024). And even better, we're so delighted to be joined by the movie's writer/director Michael Felker for a special interview! We had a truly fabulous time chatting with Michael about the movie, his work on previous Rustic Films features, and much more (and probably more JCVD than any of us anticipated). We can't thank him enough for his time, and we really hope everyone enjoys the episode! If you haven't seen the movie yet, as of this episode's release it's currently streaming on all major VOD platforms, with more details available here: www.magnetreleasing.com/thingswillbedifferent/watch-at-home/ For more information on Michael Felker and Last Life Films, you can visit: www.lastlifefilms.com/ As mentioned in the episode, if you have some funds to spare, we'd greatly appreciate it if you could consider donating to the GoFundMe to help Ben Mekler and his family out after their home was lost in the Eaton Fire: www.gofundme.com/f/ben-and-kirby-lost-everything-in-the-eaton-fire/ If you'd like to follow us on social media, you can visit our Linktree page (linked below) but we've also listed some of our social media handles: Linktree: linktr.ee/scarystuff Official site: scarystuffpodcast.com Twitter: @scarystuffpod Instagram: @scarystuffpodcast Letterboxd: @scarystuffpod Incredibly Niche Merch: teepublic.com/user/scary-stuff-podcast You can find a list of all the previous movies we've reviewed and their corresponding episodes (via the "Read Notes" option) here: www.letterboxd.com/scarystuffpod/list/all-reviews-scary-stuff-podcast/ And as always, thanks so much for listening!
Yes that's right, I'm declaring an end to the console wars, and its end comes with Forza heading to PS5. They end not with a bang, but a whimper. Also Multiversus fails to capture any market share from Super Smash Bros, and is shutting down after a year. Both Fantastic Four and Jurassic World Rebirth drop some serious trailers. And EA faces and interesting future. While Disney+ loses almost a million subs, and Buffy is returning to a screen near you.

Hear our thoughts on the action pic starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia, as we delve into behind the scenes anecdotes and all the things that make us laugh -- both intentionally and unintentionally!
In this super-sized celebration of the Muscles from Brussels, three of my dearest friends and your listener-favorite guests return to the podcast to discuss the life and career of action star Jean-Claude Van Damme. Offering an extensive overview of his entire filmography, courtesy of the show's two certified Van Damme experts in film essayist Priscilla Page and novelist Jed Ayres, and with sharp insights on the industry from novelist-screenwriter-producer Jordan Harper, this sunny, research-filled, frequently hilarious, occasionally downright wild conversation is sure to delight film fans. Focusing on some of his most famous movies as well as other titles that illustrate his range and willingness to take risks, in one of the final installments of the fifth season of Watch With Jen: Season 5, we cover BLOODSPORT, CYBORG, LIONHEART, HARD TARGET, SUDDEN DEATH, DOUBLE TEAM, JCVD, and THE BOUNCER. Note: Today's release coincides with the 18th birthday of my website Film Intuition. While I'm currently sidelined by a nasty case of pneumonia following COVID and unable to record a video or a new full-length episode with a strong voice, I hope to do so soon. In the meantime, I truly want to thank you for your listenership and readership over the years. Your support means the world. Double Impact (1991) Directed by: Sheldon Lettich Starring: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Geoffrey Lewis, Alonna Shaw, Some Asian fucker with big pecs Double Impact is the one where JCVD plays twins who were separated at birth after their parents get "batman'd", and they come back and do something with a bridge and triads or some gang. Chad is the one that dresses brightly with the floofy hair and Alex is the one with the slicked back hair, so that's how you tell them apart. IMDB describes this one as: "Twin brothers are separated when their parents are murdered but 25 years later they re-unite in order to avenge their parents' death." We Also Talked About: It's Florida, Man (Amazon) Alien: Romulus (Amazon) Disgraceland Podcast Let's Talk Horror(YouTube) Godzilla on Tubi Drunken Master on Tubi Silent Rage (TubiTv) Geoffrey Fieger (All he does is win.) Send us a textThis Thanksgiving, hunting season is over, as Ben and Paul go guestless (hunting is hard) and get restless for a mulleted JCVD, and as a result, a “guaranteed good time” (guarantor @whollymoses). This go round it's the action classic “Hard Target” (d. John Woo 1993) starring: Jean-Claude Camille François Van Varenberg, Yancy Butler, and Lance Henrickson. Should this have been a Lance Henrickson vehicle? Is the only cop working during a strike the only cop you can count on? Do poor people get THIS bored too? And the power…of the one true mullet. These questions, facts, and more to discuss with your drunk uncle at dinner lie ahead! 11/27!**All episodes contain explicit language**Artwork - Ben McFaddenReview Review Intro/Outro Theme - Jamie Henwood"What Are We Watching" & "Whatcha been up to?" 99 Cent Rental returns from its Halloween hiatus with a Van Damme good time as we drill down to the core of the spirit of this podcast with a look at a movie so patently ridiculous and offensive that we can't fully understand how it's simultaneously so entertaining and appealing. Death Warrant represents some firsts and lasts. It's ostensibly the first movie to truly put Jean-Claude Van Damme over as a viable box office draw and positions him to be the prime action movie star of the 90's. It also represents the final death rattle of Cannon Films after a decade of bad business practice finally caught up with them. Featuring a performance from Robert Guillaume that this movie clearly does not deserve, it's also full of side characters that are every bit as magnetic as JCVD.
