John Calipari to arkansas? When i read it this morning, i wondered if it was april fools day and not solar eclipse day. No way that's true right? Kentucky to arkansas? Apparently that's going to happen. After 15 seasons where he won over 420 games, a national title, four final fours…..it's bye, bye Cal. Elsewhere In college hoops….who do you like tonight…..defending champ UConn or Purdue? This is actually the game just about everyone hoped for when the season began…..a team that won it all vs a team that lost in the first round last year and had to play with that anvil around the=ir necks this entire tournament. Zach Edey has been the best player by far in this tournament so far and he will have to be at his best tonight. Tip off at 9:20 eastern on cbs. On the womens side, what a story book ending to a story book season……the most successful season by virtually every metric in the history of womens ncaa hoops. South carolina became the 10th team to go undefeated in an 87-75 win over caitlin clark and iowa. Remember the gamecocks were unbeaten when they lost to iowa in the final four a year ago. It's the second straight season the lady hawkeyes lost in the national championship game. South carolinas bench outscored the iowa bench 37-0 . Clark finished with 30 points and ends her career 3951 points, the most ever in womens or mens division i basketball history. On to the reds…. The first full week of the season was solid. Two series wins over washington and philadelphia….a 4-2 record with some timely hitting and good pitching by and large. The start of week two…? Not so good. The new york mets did not have a single win until the day before arriving in the queen city for the weekend. Hunter greene was rock solid friday night but the reds lost 3-2. Saturday, Nick martinez was knocked around but his team railled for 5 runs in the eighth inning to win 9-7. Then came yesterday….. Series finale…rubber game….and the reds bats disappeared in a 3-1 loss. Over the weekend, the reds were 3-28 with runners in scoring position…..3-28!! Thru the first nine games, the team is hitting .242 with an on-base percentage of .319. AND They are averaging 10 strikeouts per game. In fact, of the 78 outs they committed this weekend, 32 came via the strikeout….that's over 40 percent! So at 5-4 on the year, cincinnati sits 2 ½ games behind the pirates in the nl central. Milwaukee is in second place and guess who comes to gabp tonight? You got it…Milwaukee. The brewers beat the reds 10 out of 13 meetings last season, which was a big reason they won the division. Coming into this season, everyone says No Criag COUNSELL, NO Corbin Burns, and brandon woodruff….they're done. Not so fast, milwaukee has a 6-2 mark to begin the year. Pitching matchup tonight has graham ashcraft for the red legs. Aaron ashby gets the ball for milwaukee.

The gang is back with another Trey Parker and Matt Stone masterpiece. Well in this case, a box office flop. BASEketball! The film is about the sport of BASEketball, a hybrid sport combining baseball and basketball that was invented by Zucker in the 1980s. Parker and Stone play childhood friends who invent the game as something they could win against more athletic types. The sport becomes an overnight sensation and a target of corporate sponsorship. This is the only work involving Parker and Stone that was neither written, directed, nor produced by them. The film was a box office disappointment and received mixed critical reviews. BASEketball is credited with coining the Internet slang term "derp". The movie has characters Coop and Doug who are slackers, attending a party and trying to hit on hot chicks, but they accidentally invent a game they name, baseketball. All of a sudden, years later the sport is turn into a true professional sport. Though after the commissioner of the sport dies, the owner of the Dallas Felons tries to the change the sport.

It's World Series time, and the 1983 movie calendar is offering nothing of worth for the second week in a row, so here at THE BIG 4-0 we decided to do another bonus episode, this one focusing on two baseball comedies, separated by a decade, but similar (and in many ways dissimilar) in spirit and tone: David S. Ward's seminal 1989 comedy MAJOR LEAGUE and South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone staring in David Zucker's (The Naked Gun) 1998 quasi-spoof BASEketball. This was a fun one that goes a tad awry during the BASEketball discussion, but that's what we do... Enjoy, and please remember to like, rate, and subscribe. We'll be back next time to celebrate the big 4-0's of A CHRISTMAS STORY and SLEEPAWAY CAMP.

It's Halloween time (!!!) and here at THE BIG 4-0 we didn't have any solid 1983 movies worth reviewing this week, so we decided to take advantage of the opportunity to discuss two seminal horror flicks we otherwise wouldn't be able to review within the parameters of this podcast's timeline: The arguable granddaddy of the slasher genre, John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN, and the other arguable granddaddy of the modern slasher, Sean S. Cunningham's FRIDAY THE 13th. As always, please remember to rate, like, and subscribe; and we'll be back next week with another bonus episode - We're coming up on The World Series, so Ron and Peter will be celebrating by reliving 1989's MAJOR LEAGUE and 1998's BASEketball. In conversation with comedian and author James "Murr" Murray Surely You Can't Be Serious is a behind-the-scenes making-of oral history of the 1980 comedy classic Airplane!, as told by its equally legendary writers and directors David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker. Featuring anecdotes by the film's stars, it also delves into the making of fan-favorite scenes and the organic (read: pre-Internet) evolution toward its place in the pop culture pantheon. Zucker and company, also the auteurs of the cultishly adored Kentucky Fried Movie and Top Secret!, each branched out into further film success. Zucker himself went on to direct a plethora of film comedies, including The Naked Gun franchise, BASEketball, Scary Movie 3 & 4, and many others, as well as writing and producing Scary Movie 5. He is also the author of the memoir Before the Invention of Smiling, an unconventional version of his family history. What can we make out of his books? Well, we can make a hat, or a brooch, or a pterodactyl.... James Murray is one of the hosts of the long-running and popular TruTV improv program Impractical Jokers. Also the co-author of the Awakened and Area 51 Interns series of sci-fi novels, he has toured solo as a standup comedian, starred in TBS's The Misery Index, and appeared in numerous other television shows and films.  Because you love Author Events, please make a donation to keep our podcasts free for everyone. The bullpen has been near perfect and the starters just as good, or better. The power is coming in bunches and these guys are having a blast playing ball. The Eagles look to bounce back against a very tough Dolphins opponent. The loss in NY was solely on the coaching staff. The recipe for winning against Miami is possessing the ball for much of the game. The defense will be tested more than they have this season to this point. Can they rise up and defend their house? Reel Big Fish was one of the biggest ska-punk bands in the late 90s. Their success was launched by the success of their single "Sell Out." In 1997, the song started to explode while Reel Big Fish was on tour as the opening act for Let's Go Bowling and The Cherry Poppin' Daddies. Midway through the tour, they were promoted to headliner. To this day, Scott still feels weird and kind of guilty about it. But there have been a lot more weird moments during Reel Big Fish's career, which Scott shares with us. Like the time they opened for KISS at an amphitheater, then immediately left the venue to open for Skankin' Pickle in a small Inland Empire club. We also talk about how strange it was for Reel Big Fish to travel all over the world. (He includes a particularly funny story from their trip to Russia). Not to mention the time their tour bus blew up--they were almost inside when it happened. Plus Scott talks to us about interviewing random people in Times Square about ska for the documentary Pick It Up - Ska In The 90s. We also talk about his acting roles in the We Are The Union music videos for "You're Dead / Vampire Ska" and "Make It Easy." (And what it was like to kill Brent Friedman on camera!) We also discuss what it was like to recently meet The Slackers' frontman Vic Ruggiero for the first time, the influence of Fishbone on the Reel Big Fish, making a cameo in the film BASEketball (by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone) and how Aaron Barrett and Scott's funny on-stage banter started as something antagonistic between them. Plus we dig deep into the fantastic record Cheer Up and learn a lot about "Drunk Again" and "Average Man," two songs Scott wrote. And Crumbl Cookies. We definitely talk about Crumbl Cookies. Thanks our new sponsor Ally, Olsen walked into the Bojangles studio ready to hit the ground running. He detailed the ups and downs of his football life and the values instilled in him by his father that he took along with him every step of the way. Dale Jr. and Greg share their thoughts on the psychology of raising children in a sport and that there is more valuable lessons to be learned by a young mind than just winning a game. Pro football player Olsen is now coach-dad on the baseball field for his children's teams..  Olsen talks about the process of being recruited by colleges during his high school football career and the realities involved in the process. We learn that his father made Greg do something very difficult to let down the coaches from the schools that he wasn't choosing. In doing so he taught some valuable lessons. He also reveals his tenure with Notre Dame and the tough decision to vacate the famed Indiana-based academy for the palm trees of Miami beach and the University of Miami Hurricanes. Curiosity over the combine events that scout college players before they are drafter in the NFL, Dale Jr. gets Greg Olsen to open up about his experience at the event. It's a rare peek into what really happens between player reps, scouts and teams during the NFL Combine. It also lets us in the killer-instinct and mental game that Olsen used throughout much of his football career. The 6-foot-5, 255-pound tight end offers his memories of getting drafted by the Chicago Bears in the first round. Then a few years later, one of the worst trades in Bears history sent Olsen to the North Carolina to play for the Carolina Panthers. Olsen saw the majority of his success in Carolina, and gives us a look behind the curtain of NFL locker room life. What was it like playing with star quarterback Cam Newton? Was the polarizing figure a distraction? Olsen also details getting released by the Panthers and the many difficulties he faced in his year with the Seattle Seahawks, from the CoVid-19 pandemic to coaching, that helped lead to his decision to retire from the game. The biggest fight Olsen faced didn't come from a linebacker or a free-safety. It came from within his family. In 2012, he and wife Kara gave birth to twins T.J. and Talbot. T.J. was born with a congenital heart defect that required multiple surgeries, including three open-heart procedures. In 2021, his heart started to fail.
