Tony Braunagel, Terry Wilson & Snuffy Walden Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson What do you get when you Zoom with three amigos from Texas who go back over 50 years? A whole lot of fun, rock stories galore, and a ton of love. The Grammy, Emmy, BMI, and Blues Award Winning trio of Snuffy Walden, Tony Braunagel, and Terry Wilson took us back to the 60s in Houston, playing at the Cellar, a strip club in Houston, Tony and Terry off with Johnny Nash and Snuffy off with Stray Dog to open for Emerson, Lake and Palmer. They all ended up in London, there was Rabbit, Paul Kossoff, Free, Back Street Crawler, Pete Townshend, and Eric Burdon for all of them, at least twice. Some great war stories along the way… there was Michael Ruff, some crashed cars and trashed hotel rooms. Tony took us through his time with Rickie Lee Jones, Bonnie Raitt, and The Blues Brothers backup band, leading to be an actor and musician on According to Jim. Snuffy getting Chaka Khan, Donna Summers and then segueing to TV, Thirty Something and The Wonder Years, his first foray in––both Emmy-winning shows that year, leading to the West Wing and his own Emmy. Terry partnering with Teresa James in music and in life, their Grammy nod, his song-writing, producing through his latest for Back Street Crawler's Terry Slesser which reunited him with Tony and Terry. They've shared many stages and sessions over the years, but it's their rock-solid friendship borne in decades-long history that sweetens their song. What a joy to be in their joy. A great time was had by all. Lucky me and you to be a fly on that wall. Tony talks about the Feral world tour road trip, playing with zombie tropes, the magic that makes Uncanny Valley work, and pitching story ideas for The Thing. Plus Tony digs into the notion that maybe drawing all those wonderful My Little Pony comics left him with a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Watch: Maine Voices Live with Craig Grossi, author and Marine Corps veteran Portland Press Herald staff writer Ray Routhier sat down with author and Marine Corps veteran Craig Grossi for a conversation and book signing during a live event in Portland. About Craig Craig and Fred Raised in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC, Craig Grossi is a Marine Corps veteran, author and recipient of the Purple Heart. After getting out of the Marines in 2011, Grossi worked for the federal Defense Intelligence Agency, enrolled at Georgetown University and got a degree in international affairs. Grossi is the author of “Craig & Fred: A Marine, a Stray Dog and How They Rescued Each Other,” an uplifting true story about the stray dog he met on an Afghan battlefield, and how they saved each other and traveled America together, and “Second Chances,” which details his experience working closely with prison inmates in Maine who raise and train puppies to become service dogs. Learn more about Craig's story and his books in this article by Ray Routhier. Grossi and his dog Fred appeared on the Today show and Rachael Ray, and in schools, bookstores, and military bases across America as they told the uplifting story of how Craig found Fred while serving in Afghanistan—and brought him home. During their travels, Craig was invited to speak at Maine State Prison. While there, he met a group of very special inmates, participants in a program run by the nonprofit America's Vet Dogs. Fred died of cancer at his and Grossi's home on Nov. 22, 2023. He was 14. Grossi credits Fred with “saving” him by getting him to open up to others and ask for help. Read about Fred in this article by Ray Routhier. When not writing or speaking, Grossi enjoys life in the great outdoors and devotes his time to advocating for issues close to his heart like prison reform, animal welfare and mental health awareness. He now lives in mid-coast Maine with his wife Nora and their dogs, Ruby and a recently rescued pup named Bingo.

Chris describes OCD as a stray dog and you as a caring citizen. You're a good dude, and so you offee the poor dog some food. and that's nice of you. But what's the stray dog going to do when it's been offered a nice plate of food? Come back again? Move in? There are tough emotions felt perhaps in turning the helpless dog away. But the alternative is to ensure that s/he comes back again and again to exploit your kindness. Don't feed the dog.

PART TWO - One of the most hot-button discussions in Turkey is how street dogs impact everyday citizens. Most people in cities like Istanbul are used to it, with a long tradition of living alongside them. However, in peripheral areas, there is not always as much support. When government municipalities started to push strays from city centers to outside suburban and rural areas, out of their natural environment, there have been a relatively small number of attacks and accidents. These have reportedly been sensationalized in the media, making it seem like a bigger phenomenon, and said to be weaponized by the government to instill fear. With the Turkish parliament passing the so-called ‘massacre law' in July 2024, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's government positioned it as a way to protect civilians from these stray dogs. However, in reality, this will be used as a way to significantly harm many strays. Animal rights activists have tried to present alternate solutions or volunteer their time and services, but so far the government has closed the door on that dialogue. In the second episode of this two-part series, we spoke to local guests about how much stray dogs would be missed from the streets and how the government should embrace the passionate and hard-working animal rights community to reach a better solution that still addresses the overpopulation problem while going about it safely and humanely.Guest experts featured, in order, include Ahmet Senpolat (HAYTAP, Animal Rights Federation), Nazlan Ertan (journalist), Lisanne Hillen (Melez Dog Rescue), and Elizabeth Lo (filmmaker). For more information about the episode, guests, and featured links: dogsavethepeople.com/episodes/turkey-stray-dog-dilemma-2024-pt-2

Send us a text4X4 2: TSAI MING-LIANG and "STRAY DOGS"Our four film investigation into slow cinema master Tsai Miang-liang tackles his 2013 masterpiece STRAY DOGS. If you can vibe to a five minute opening static shot of a woman brushing her hair while her children sleep beside her in a charred husk of as bedroom where even the sheets on the bed look like ruin before cutting to a nearly ten minute long shot of a depressed homeless man in the lashing rain of Tai Pei holding a sign at a busy intersection, we have the movie for you! It also includes: cabbage desecration, alcoholism, abandonment of buildings and humans, and a house built inside of a nightmare's nightmare (this is NOT a comedy).Joined by guest Annabel once again, Ken, Jack and Ryan get into a fairly dense and deep convo about Stray Dogs. Co-host Thomas is once again absent due to his covert foreign work as a CIA super spy (who we just outed?) and he is missed. Slow Cinema is an important part of international film and we are delighted to discuss one of the contemporary greats this month. Send us a text4X4 III: TSAI MING-LIANG: REBELS OF THE NEON GODIt's the beginning of our four film dive into Queer Asian New Wave master Tsai Ming-liang. Released in 1992 and made shortly after Taiwan's "quiet revolution" from a dictatorship to democracy, Rebels of the Neon God stars the director's muse, Lee Kang-sheng (who would go onto being in every one of his films and the two live together in... interesting circumstances) as a Cram Student who becomes obsessed with a small time hood after a brief act of violence in the street, who drives around on a scooter in Tai Pei, smoking cigarettes, playing video games, walking around his partially flooded apartment and being on the outside of polite society. It sounds like a crime film but, trust us, it is not. Tsai Ming-liang has the eye of an artist and the patience of Rip Van Winkle in holding some of his compositions - something he will go deeper into as his career grows. Picked by S13 guest host Jack, we get a tutorial on Taiwan, Tsai Ming-liang's career and antecedents to his slow cinema masterpiece before next week's STRAY DOGS. WARNING: Due to the difficulty of being able to see Rebels by a few hosts, we do talk about access to foreign or obscure films in the streaming era (spoiler: we are not fans). WARNING II: Co-host Thomas is not on this episode because he was in Europe legally watching Matthew Barney films at the Louvre when we recorded. The Turkish Parliament passed new legislation this summer that aims to remove all stray dogs from the streets by 2028, as these dogs are labeled by the government dangerous and causing harm to humans. This is a significant shift in policy in a country where street dogs have been embedded and accepted into its culture for centuries. Turkish animal welfare groups say in reality there are very few deadly dog attacks, but social media sensationalization and politicization of incidents have complicated debates. While everyone agrees there needs to be better plans to manage the country's dog overpopulation, there is conflict on how to handle it. Animal advocates argue the 100,000 capacity in current shelters cannot humanely accommodate an estimated four million street dogs, calling the new stray dog legislation the “massacre law.” In the first episode of this two-part series, we explore the unique culture tradition of stray dogs living in Turkey, and discuss the problems and challenges around this new stray dog removal law.We spoke to several guest experts about their perspective on Turkey's stray dog dilemma with the new law. Guests include Elizabeth Lo (filmmaker), Nazlan Ertan (journalist), Lisanne Hillen (Melez Dog Rescue), and Ahmet Senpolat (HAYTAP, Animal Rights Federation). For more information about the episode, guests, and featured links: www.dogsavethepeople.com/episodes/turkey-stray-dog-dilemma-2024-pt-1
This episode explores the War of the Stray Dog, a 1925 military skirmish between Greece and Bulgaria triggered by a Greek soldier's pursuit of a stray dog across the border. Against the backdrop of post-World War I tensions and nationalistic fervor, the incident highlights how minor events can escalate into significant disputes. The League of Nations' intervention showcases early attempts at international diplomacy and collective security in a volatile Balkan region.

Jack's story is one of compassion, resilience, and how small acts of kindness can ripple into something far greater. In December 2019, a stray dog limped into Jack's home through a door left ajar during a storm. Despite her poor condition—malnourished and suffering from infected paws and dental issues—Jack and his family chose to take her in. They named her Suzy, and she quickly became a beloved part of the family.Reflecting on the experience, Jack shared, “It could have been a lot worse. That was the only path forward, turning something negative into something positive.” Over time, Jack and his family raised $42,000 from generous supporters, more than enough to cover Suzy's medical bills. With the excess funds, they launched an initiative to help hundreds of other dogs find their forever homes.Jack's story, now immortalized in his children's book A Stray Dog for Christmas, continues to inspire people worldwide. As Jack puts it, “We've changed a lot of lives. We've saved a lot of lives. And it's something that myself and my family are really proud of.”Jack's journey teaches us all a valuable lesson: when we open our hearts, the impact of even the smallest actions can be profound.tl;dr:* Jack Jokinen shares the heartwarming story of how a stray, malnourished dog, Susie, unexpectedly entered his home and how his family decided to adopt her, inspiring many others to adopt rescue dogs.* After receiving $42,000 in donations for Susie's medical care, Jack and his family used the excess funds to help support 366 dog adoptions over the span of a leap year.* Jack discusses Susie's ongoing recovery, her joyful integration into their family, and how her story has touched the lives of many, leading to the publication of his children's book, A Stray Dog for Christmas.* Jack reflects on empathy as his superpower, explaining how a focus on understanding others has positively influenced both his personal and professional life, particularly in his work as a customer success manager.* Jack encourages empathy in his children by helping them understand the motivations behind others' actions and emphasizes the importance of living by example to inspire kindness and empathy in future generations. How to Develop Empathy As a SuperpowerJack's superpower is empathy. He developed this ability through experiences that helped him see beyond surface behaviors, understanding the deeper struggles others face. This empathetic perspective allows him to relate to people with compassion and make more meaningful connections in both his personal and professional life.Jack shared a powerful story of how empathy became central to his life. Early in his career, a lesson involving Bart Simpson reframed his perspective on others' behaviors. Instead of seeing Bart as a “troublemaker,” Jack learned to see him as a child in trouble, dealing with tough circumstances. This lesson shifted Jack's worldview, helping him recognize that people's actions often stem from more profound struggles, shaping his approach to relationships and interactions, including rescuing Suzy, a stray dog.Tips for Developing Empathy:* Pause and Reflect: When faced with negativity, take a moment to consider what might have led the other person to act in this way.* Ask Questions: Try to understand the other person's point of view by asking thoughtful questions that reveal their underlying concerns.* Practice Patience: If you're in a frustrating situation, give yourself time before reacting. Jack suggests taking a walk before responding to heated emails.* Model Empathy: Live empathetically in front of others, especially children, by demonstrating compassionate responses to challenging situations.By following Jack's example and advice, you can make empathy a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileJack Jokinen (he/him):Author, SourceBooks KidsAbout SourceBooks Kids: Sourcebooks Kids publishes notable fiction and non-fiction projects, including board books, picture books, chapter books, and middle-grade works with the hope of engaging children in the pure fun of books and the wonder of learning new things.Website: astraydogforchristmas.comX/Twitter Handle: @SourcebooksCompany Facebook Page: fb.com/SuzynPupmanBiographical Information: Jack Jokinen is a businessman, blogger, podcaster, and author. Tony Fleecs make his return alongside his STRAY DOGS and FERAL partner in crime, Trish Forstner. The two discuss the first arc of their hit ongoing series and also provide a look ahead for what's coming in beyond FERAL #5. SPOILERS WARNING: 28:28
Superstar doesn't even come close to encapsulate the guest creator for this episode. Since his last appearance in the tiger den, Tony Fleecs has been nothing short of a force of nature within the cultural spectrum and now he's back! And we're all better for it.Coming off the massively successful “Stray Dogs” from Image Comics, Tony is hitting the shelves with two beautifully-wild creator owned series: “Uncanny Valley” from Boom Studios and “Feral” from Image Comics. In a familiar vein to its predecessor, Stray Dogs, “Feral” softens your guard with that Don Bluth styling before sucking you down into the darkness of mystery and horror. It brings a bit of zest into a genre that sometimes becomes a bit structurally predictable within the comic medium. This time around the emphasis is cats. As a trio of indoor felines get stuck in the wilds of the outdoors . Already underprepared and overwhelmed things only escalate due to a rabies outbreak. American Tale meets Walking dead? Count BTR in! One of the beloved elements of the series is the continuation of variant covers paying homage to cult classic horror film posters and VHS covers. Not only proven to be a marketing success, but has quickly become a fan-favorite tradition with Fleecs' pet-thrillers at Image.Tony's other creator own project that is taking to the shelves alongside “Feral” is “Uncanny Valley.” And what a perfect name for such a unique and bold concept. If unfamiliar with the 70's hypothesis; “Uncanny Valley” is a proposed phenomenon theorizing the relation between the human likeness of an object and a viewer's affinity toward it.Imagine you're a kid… a kid that just doesn't quite fit in. Constantly haunted by the sensation, even visions, that you are different. It's a feeling that most of us, as people, experienced at some point in our youth. Then one day an unintroduced family member shows up; say it's your grandpa. Only he's a 2d cartoon character resembling Yosemite Sam and yeah, you are apart of something greater than you could of ever thought. The concept is bold and it works seamlessly. With variations in art styling, the reader is very quickly immersed into this very real world with very real people. So even when the cartoon surreal is interjected it's not only shocking and intriguing the high stakes still remain. It's brilliant in concept and execution. I can only imagine a film/tv deal is in the near future for “Uncanny Valley.”On top of the this Tony has other projects that are sharing space on the shelves; the on going series “Local Man” from Image Comics and a new Army of Darkness series “Forever” from Dynamite. It's the summer of FLEECS, so get to your local comic shop and celebrate his creative power! -T A note: The “NOW” is the resurgence of the independent creator through crowd sourcing and self-publishing availability. As the veil gets pulled back ever further and the predatory practices of corporate models get revealed, it is more and more important to support those who actually create the stories and art that we as consumers enjoy. So SUPPORT INDIE PROJECTS and their CREATORS. Help make the indies the mainstream. Even the smallest of gestures can be of the biggest help.Have you experienced the elusive and majestic energy of the Blue Tiger? Had a sighting in the wilderness of the eternal forest?
