It has been a while, but we are back with another Trve. Crvp. Pop!, the search for the worst album of all time.On this episode Steve and Sam look at MDNA, the 12th studio album from US pop icon Madonna, released on the 23rd of March 2012.It looked like Madonna had effortlessly sidestepped the late period wobble that so many of her contemporaries suffered in the 2000's when she released 2005's Confessions on a Dancefloor album and was at the top of her game once again. Even the Hard Candy album of 2008 yielded a pretty massive single as well. Well done Madonna, you've cracked it!Or had she, soon things started to get pretty messed up in here personal life, a divorce from cockney, wide boy movie director Guy Ritchie was a right slap in the facking noggin... or something. And by the time she was pimping herself out on Facebook for people to collab with in 2011, it looked like another wobble was on its way.It was when the title for her comeback album was released that things took a serious turn for the worst though, the clunky MDNA made people worry she was trying too hard, and when the album arrived and sold less than a 5th of Confessions... the "Is Madonna past it" discourse started up again. A decade later though, is MDNA that bad? Well, we'll let you know.

This podcast covers New Girl Season 4, Episode 19, The Right Thing, which originally aired on Mar 31, 2015 and was written by Alex Cuthbertson and Matt Fusfeld and directed by Erin O'Malley. Here's a quick recap of the episode:Jess, Cece, and Coach attend the funeral for a guy Jess went on two dates with and “sext”ed. Meanwhile, Schmidt's mom, Louise, comes to visit and Winston is trying to get his cop partner, Aly, to hang out with him! This episode got a 7/10 rating from both Kritika and Kelly and we both had the same favorite character: Winston! While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:Boyz II Men - “Motownphilly" - When Winston and Aly were helping Winston remember who attended his Bar Mitzvah, they were playing the song Motown Philly, which Winston sang along to. J.J. Watt - The real J.J. Watt guest acted in this episode and played himself where Pete was his agent. Alan Iverson / [Memphis] Grizzlies / [Philadelphia] 76rs - Jess is trying to tell a story about Pete to keep up the ruse or her working with him and mentioned that Allen Iverson should not go to the "Grizzlies” but should finish his career off with “the '76ers!"Kieran Culkin / Owen Wilson - When Nick thought they may not have the money for the bar, Mike said the right guys would have the money, “Or Kieran Culkin's mouth” and further asked, “How about Owen Wilson's nose?” Additionally we mentioned in our podcast episode a promo video that J.J. Watt filmed for the promo of this episode. Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 20! Luxury sales are experiencing a downturn. Last quarter, luxury fashion's biggest players, such as LVMH, Gucci's owner Kering, Richemont, and Burberry, all reported diminishing revenues. But why? Has the global demand for luxury mega brands fallen for good? Are consumers bored with overpriced simpleton designs, such as hoodies and t-shirts? Have their preferences shifted away from physical goods to unique experiences? The House of Christian Lacroix celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, and its CEO, Nicolas Topiol, joined me to discuss the brand's growth strategy and his plan to keep it relevant during the age of imagination. Mr. Topiol is an expert in private equity investing and since 2002 has worked to establish duty free retail and distribution operations in Central and South America. As well as leading the acquisition of Hard Candy and Urban Decay Cosmetics. Nicolas is a luxury sector visionary. In this insightful conversation, Nicolas Topiol discusses the current challenges faced by luxury brands, including financial declines in significant markets, geopolitical impacts, and inflation. He illustrates the hardships and strategic decisions behind turning the Christian Lacroix brand into a profitable business model through restructuring, licensing, and maintaining high creative standards. The discussion covers the evolution of luxury, the dynamics of brand management, and how young designers and historic houses navigate modern consumer behaviors. Topiol also candidly shares his personal and professional journey, shedding light on the complexities of the luxury industry.Sign up for the Some Future Day Newsletter here: https://marcbeckman.substack.com/Episode Links:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicolas-topiol-720a4112/Christian Lacroix: https://www.christian-lacroix.com/To join the conversation follow Marc Beckman here: YoutubeLinkedInTwitterInstagramTikTok

St. Patricks' month comes to MAYBE the most upsetting possible conclusion; This week we are discussing David Slade's 2006 film ‘Hard Candy'. Starring Patrick Wilson, Elliot Page, and Sandra Oh, this film draws a wildly striking resemblance to Emerald Fennel's ‘Promising Young Woman'. Good, bad, and ugly, this film makes for some excellent conversation. A HUGE thank you to Kalie McAlexander for our social media. Make sure to Follow us on FB, Twitter, Instagram, & Tiktok- hhynspod And, be sure to check out Kalie's podcast, The Liberty Hall Video podcast, where her and Jon discuss whatever they happen to pull off the shelves of the last video store on Earth! This week, the Junkies catch up and find that Nicole is still a Ride-or-Die for Law and Order: SVU, even though the romance between Stabler and Benson hasn't moved any closer to Smoochtown; Olivia binged a 55 part-TikTok series about a pathological liar, then tries to make Shauna think she doesn't know who Gordon Ramsey is; and Shauna humblebrags that she has layers, like an onion, or an ogre, which will come as no surprise to any government agency that's monitoring her Google searches. Then the Junkies explore the ‘Good for Her!' Cinematic Universe, a genre that has at one end the body horror flick American Mary, and at the other, the far less gory Legally Blonde, with Gone Girl being somewhere in the middle. It's a genre whose mascot is a Lucille Bluth meme and often involves some very specific kinds of revenge. And although some of the protagonists in these ‘Good for Her!' movies might not be able to convince a court of law that the bad guy had it coming, we in the audience are all silently agreeing: “Good for her.” Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/pop-culture-junkie/id1536737728 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7k2pUxzNDBXNCHzFM7EL8W?si=6d2845539f0843c9 Website: www.popculturejunkie.com Facebook: PopCultureJunkiePodcast Twitter: @PopJunkies Instagram: @pop.culturejunkies Threads: @pop.culturejunkies Email: junkies@popculturejunkie.com Shauna on Instagram: @shaunatrinidad Shauna on TikTok: @shaunatrinidad Shauna on Threads: @shaunatrinidad Nicole on Instagram: @nicole_eldridge Nicole on TikTok: @nicole_eldridge Olivia on Instagram: @livimariez Olivia on TikTok: @livyolife420

Mark and Kenny bust out their cowbells and attitude with the sassy story-song Pharrell (welcome back!) collaboration from Hard Candy. Topics include the importance of lightness and bounce, the great Wendy Melvoin, passing off batons, the easy narrative of infidelity, traffic in the suburbs, Donna Summers, dutiful wives and resentful musicians, Madonna's Liz Phair album, the Pet Shop Boys, Alexis Arquette, Gwenyth Paltrow and Tracy Anderson, a nod to the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards, Lady Gaga, and the DILF that IS Robbie Williams and his song (and video!) “She's Madonna.” Plus, Mark confesses to an addiction and Kenny teases his own singles campaign for Hard Candy. This one's for the ladies!
Kenny and Mark consider the third single (and best song) from Hard Candy, especially the struggle between the Timberlake/Timbaland production and the beauty and ideas in Madonna's song. Topics include acoustic guitars, nasty UK tabloids, A-Rod, the tour video and Madonna's joy, touring love affairs, the futility of long-distance phone calls, redundant remixes, the end of the true confessional ballad, and the power (and pain) of long distance relationships. Plus, Mark and Kenny audibly digest lemon drops, recover the lost JT/T session track “Across the Sky” and discuss the paragons of virtue. No more candy!
No one can deny director David Slade hit it out of the ballpark with his 2 initial features, HARD CANDY (2005) and 30 DAYS OF NIGHT (2007). Both were splendid genre films and have become cult classics. Between the years he has directed music videos and television episodes among some other films. Late in 2023 his latest film DARK HARVEST was released during the Halloween season. In the early 1960's within a small isolated farming community in Illinois, every Halloween a monster known as Sawtooth Jack rises from the local cornfields. Years ago he entered the local church and cursed the town to with failed crops and hardship. Now, each year, a custom has been set in place. Each Halloween, the teenage boys of the town must hunt Sawtooth Jack before he curses the town once more. The movie is based on the novel with the same name written by author Norman Partridge. After being held back for a year, the movie was released to digital VOD as the last film by MGM/United Artist before their absorption into the Amazon movie fold. Your co-hosts take a look at David Slade's “comeback” and give their thoughts on the movie.
In a preview of this week's Pop Pantheon: All Access episode, Louie and guest Miles Marshall Lewis look back Madonna's 11th studio album, 2008's Hard Candy, an album where the Queen of Pop uncharacteristically played catch-up with her pop star progeny, enlisting Timabland, Justin Timberlake and Pharrell to help get her music back in American radio's good graces. The gambit only minorly paid off. The album received mixed reviews and while lead single "4 Minutes (feat. Justin Timberlake" reached the top ten, the album was middling performer commercially. But how has it aged? And how does it stack up again other latter period Madonna albums? Louie and Miles dive into all this and more. We're wrapping up our look at Toxic Masculinity with David Slade's feature directorial debut, Hard Candy (2005). This secret rape/revenge film features powerhouse performances from Elliot Page and Patrick Wilson and plenty of uncomfortable moments. Plus: comparisons to Promising Young Women (and Saw X?!), a frank discussion of pedophilia, plenty of strategic framing, and the prequel we want to see. Reference: Hadass S. Wade.
