Hi everyone and welcome to a belated episode - I've recently had eye surgery and the recovery has been longer than expected! As usual, click the link to see the trailer for each of the main reviews! In this episode, we kick off with CHIEF OF STATION (Signature Entertainment) - the latest action thriller from director Jesse V. Johnson, starring Aaron Eckhart and Olga Kurylenko! THE PRANK (Signature Entertainment)  is a dark comedy in which two highschoolers spread a rumour that their science teacher murdered a student - with hilarious results! There's certainly nothing hilarious about BIRTHDAY GIRL, where a mother tries to help her daughter after she is date-raped on a cruise ship. Things get even more somber with WHAT REMAINS (Icon Films), in which a self-confessed serial killer starts to question his own guilt.   Our Short Shot is THE SPIDER, a genius take on the Spiderman origin tale! Click the link to see the whole short film! In our previous episode, we reviewed Samurai Cop as our DTV Throwback. This time, we review the sequel, SAMURAI COP 2! All I'll say is: this really defied all of our expectations!

With financing and shooting schedules shrinking, how hard is it to make a decent action movie on a low budget? How can you make your lead actor look like an action hero if they refuse to train? And is there scope in the martial arts genre for tackling more challenging topics, like homophobia and racism? In 'Best of Directors' - one of three compilation shows available now - I share some of my favourite conversations with directors who have appeared on the podcast since its inception in 2016. This includes: Hollywood stunt legend J.J. Perry, who made his directorial debut in 2022 with the vampire action comedy, Day Shift, starring Jamie Foxx; the actor and filmmaker Diana Lee Inosanto, best known for playing Magistrate Morgan Elsbeth in The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, who discusses her 2008 martial arts indie, The Sensei; Jesse V. Johnson, known for his work with UK action star Scott Adkins in films including Triple Threat, Accident Man, and Avengement; Gareth Evans, visionary director of The Raid series; and Isaac Florentine, responsible for some of the best martial arts movies of the 2000s, including the Undisputed films and Ninja series. If you enjoyed this 'best of' compilation episode, then remember to check out Best of Stunts and Best of Actors, which have dropped simultaneously with this episode. Boudica Movie In Depth Interview Jesse V Johnson "Superbly crafted movie of Queen Boudica's epic fight back against the treacherous Roman Empire." BOUDICA is the bold, bloody story of the titular Celtic Queen. King Prasutagus rules over the Iceni people with his wife Boudica by his side. Prasutagus is betrayed and killed by Rome, leaving Boudica's kingdom without a male heir. The Romans seize her land, her property and abuse her and her children. Driven to the edge of madness and determined to avenge her husband's death, Boudica rallies the various tribes from the region and wages an epic war against the mighty Roman Empire. Starring Olga Kurylenko (Black Widow), Clive Standen (Vikings), Rita Tushingham (Last Night in Soho), (Harry Potter franchise) and James Faulkner (Game of Thrones), Boudica is written and directed by Jesse V. Johnson (Avengement). Director In-depth Interview We talked to the director Jesse V Johnson about his inspiration making the movie. Questions This is very different film to Avengement, Debt Collector, Hell Hath No Fury, How did you come to make this movie? Olga Kurylenko glows as the warrior queen did you create the movie with her in mind? Is there any sense that she is channelling the current war in her own Ukraine? It is beautifully, sumptuously shot with a definite nod to Gladiator in story and style was that intentional? You have an outstanding cast, (Clive Standen, Rita Tushingham, James Faulkner,) Nick Moran as the baddy is superb as the Roman general Catius Decianus. How did you get him to find his character almost wickedly enjoying the slaughter? How did you train the actors and choreograph the fight scenes? The Roman legionaries were impressive in their kit, did they come battle ready? How did you train the Britons to fight a shield wall? It is very different to a tank or RPG, so what was it like working a ballista into the fight action? Was the ancient sword that came alive in Boudica's hands a reference to King Arthur and the sword in the stone? The end fight scene has a Tarantino/ Peckinpahesque (Cross Of Iron (The Wild Bunch?)) violent glory, is that just me or were you channelling them? You shot in Suffolk. What was it like working on location on the earth where it actually happened? You're shooting in Italy right now… what are you making? What is next? "Every martial artist talks about stepping up in the face of evil, BOUDICA did it 2000 years ago" Based on legendary, historical events from 60/ 61 AD in a Britain barely conquered by the Roman Empire, the story of Boudica has inspired generations ever since. Boudica's battle speech "...Among the rest of mankind death frees even those who are in slavery to others; only in the case of the Romans do the very dead remain alive for their profit. Why is it that, though none of us has any money (how, indeed, could we, or where would we get it?), we are stripped and despoiled like a murderer's victims? And why should the Romans be expected to display moderation as time goes on, when they have behaved toward us in this fashion at the very outset, when all men show consideration even for the beasts they have newly captured?..." Recorded by Cassius Dio in about 200 AD, 140 years after the events noted in 60 AD. Availability BOUDICA is available on digital now. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

After nearly thirty feature films as a director, and another several dozen credits as a stunt performer and coordinator on major Hollywood blockbusters, filmmaker JESSE V. JOHNSON Is wrapping up work on no fewer than three action features to be released in 2023. With the western-influence crime drama “One Ranger” (with Thomas Jane and John Malkovich), the period action adventure “Boudica” (with Olga Kurylenko, “Quantum of Solace”), and the CIA spy thriller “Chief of Station” (starring Kurylenko and Aaron Eckhart), Johnson continues to bring new life, energy, and imagination to the world of action-oriented filmmaking. Growing up the Winchester, UK, Johnson was raised far from the trappings of show business, but fell in love with the cinematic art form through watching great westerns and other classics that gave him a unique sense of the storytelling possibilities of the American west. “My heroes are John Ford, Sam Peckinpah, Anthony Mann, Budd Boeticher,” he says. “Their films often reflected characters pushed to the very limits of their endurance, they were universal themes and timeless.” That can certainly be seen in Johnson's first release this year, “One Ranger,” which features Thomas Jane as a modern-day Texas Ranger who is recruited by British intelligence to help stop a potential terrorist attack on the UK. The dogged, relentless pursuit for justice gives hero Ranger Alex Tyree a strong moral compass that compliments his extraordinary skills as a tracker. getthefunkoutshow.kuci.org

Sometimes it's the simplest ideas that tend to work out the best....A gunslinging Texas ranger (Thomas Jane) tracks a bank robber (Dean Jagger) across the desert — only to discover he's an international terrorist set on detonating a bomb in the heart of London. When the lawman's partner is killed, he is drawn into partnership with a British intelligence agent (Dominique Tipper) and her boss (John Malkovich) to bring the outlaw to justice — dead or alive.'One Ranger' which is available on VOD platforms now and coming to Blu-Ray this coming June 13th is a no-nonsense cowboy affair that may take the fish out of the water that he used to but it never once skimps on the action. We had the unique pleasure of sitting down with writer/director Jesse V Johnson to talk about the origins of the story, the magic of the western in the cinema lore and so very much more....'One Ranger' is available on VOD platforms now and comes to Blu-Ray this June 13th.

The sixth collaboration between British action film legends Jesse V. Johnson and Scott Adkins sees the actor in unfamiliar territory as antihero Cain Burgess, escaping from H.M.P. Belmarsh after the death of his mother and seeking vengeance on the gang who made him a hardened criminal in the 2019 action movie AVENGEMENT. Former stuntman Johnson together with co-writer Stu Small  conjure up that rare thing; a film that doesn't portray revenge as glorious but acknowledges what a destructive and ugly act it is and some of Adkins best work to date sees him emotionally and physically scarred as the intimidating lead as well as employing a ferocious and violent fighting style over some of the more acrobatic martial arts we are sometimes used to seeing from him. Strong support from Thomas Turgoose as wannabe tough guy Tune, Craig Fairbrass as double-crossing brother Lincoln and Terence Howard as criminal accountant - surely a tautology - Stokes round out an impressive cast.We love to hear from our listeners! ABOUT SCOTT ADKINSWith a huge fanbase and 16+ Million followers, multi-hyphenate Scott Adkins is a skilled actor and one of the best martial artists in the world. Mr. Adkins will soon be seen in the highly anticipated JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 on March 24, 2023 - where he will star alongside Keanu Reeves, and also be reuniting with former IP MAN co-star Donnie Yen. Scott currently stars alongside Jamie Foxx & Dave Franco in the Netflix hit DAY SHIFT, now streaming. On September 23rd, he will star in SECTION 8 opposite Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren & Dermot Mulroney, followed by ACCIDENT MAN: HITMAN'S HOLIDAY on October 14th, which he also wrote & produced.Scott can also be seen in top projects such as Kathryn Bigelow's ZERO DARK 30 for Sony, AMERICAN ASSASSIN for CBS Films, the Marvel/Disney feature DOCTOR STRANGE, the comedic-spy thriller GRIMSBY for Paramount, THE EXPENDABLES 2, CRIMINAL, LEGACY OF LIES & SEIZED for Lionsgate, BOYKA: UNDISPUTED for Universal, AVENGEMENT, CASTLE FALLS opposite Dolph Lundgren, THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM opposite Matt Damon, THE WOLF WARRIOR, which grossed over $90 million USD in China alone, and ONE SHOT, opposite Ryan Phillippe.TRAINER FOR ACCIDENT MAN: HiTMAN'S HOLIDAY:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lO005og3_l4TRAINER FOR DAY SHIFThttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GN_IwBptKi4ARTICLE FROM VULTURE.COM ON SCOTT ADKINSFamiliarity is more of a feature than a bug for Netflix, so it's not surprising that Day Shift, which topped the streaming service's charts after its August 12 release, is a lot like other movies you might have already seen. It's about a Black vampire hunter named Bud Jablonski (Jamie Foxx) who's human, but his gruffness and gifts for hand-to-hand conflict mean he comes across as Blade's down-on-his-luck SoCal cousin. Bud has a complicated history with the vampire-hunters union, the headquarters of which is a strip-mall answer to the hotel in the John Wicks, with its rules, bureaucracy, and fondness for retro technology. The antagonist he faces down, Audrey (Karla Souza), is overseeing a luxury development in the San Fernando Valley, bent on vampire rule via gentrification - a plan shared by the undead villains in Netflix's own 2020 Vampires vs. the Bronx. But there is an element that distinguishes Day Shift from any offering of the week, which is that it features a few genuinely pleasurable fight sequences. Some feature contortionists in ghoulish makeup who bend their limbs in eye-watering ways. The best involve Scott Adkins, a Birmingham-born martial artist and actor whose presence in Day Shift serves as an action shibboleth, a nod to the fact that first-time director J.J. Perry is a working stunt coordinator himself.Adkins is not famous, not in the way that his scene partner Steve Howey might be considered to be after long stints on Reba and Shameless. His most visible role to date is one most people didn't even know he played, taking over for Ryan Reynolds in the final act of X-Men Origins: Wolverine to play a not-quite-Deadpool with prosthetics over his face to make it look like his mouth was sewn shut. But he and Howey, cast as renowned vampire-hunting Armenian brothers who disguise themselves as stereo repairmen, roll up in Day Shift in the kind of entrance that suggests the audience is familiar with the actors being introduced. And a certain kind of geek absolutely will be. While Adkins has been inching toward the mainstream - he'll play a role in the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 4 - the fandom he's built up so far has come from his work in Asia and a slew of effective, bruising features that have mostly bypassed theaters. He's a deity of the direct-to-video realm, proving again and again that you don't need big budgets or a few hundred overworked VFX artists at your beck and call when you're capable of providing the spectacle yourself.Adkins isn't a bad actor, though it's his astonishing physical prowess that sets him apart. In 2006'sUndisputed 2: Last Man Standing, he does a somersaulting kick into a flying roundhouse, flat-out video-game sh*t that director Isaac Florentine captures in full and in slow motion so you can appreciate that it's being done in real life. Adkins is best at rough-and-tumble antiheroes and charismatic villains - he's incapable of playing a character who has not at some point in his life snapped someone's arm in two. He was the antagonist in Undisputed 2, his breakthrough, a sequel to the 2002 Wesley Snipes boxing movie that featured none of the original cast and that was improbably great anyway. Michael Jai White was the star, but Adkins stole the show, and subsequent sequels followed his character, a sadistic MMA specialist named Yuri Boyka whose dominance in the prison's underground fight scene has secured him a measure of status behind bars, on a bloody quest for redemption and meaning.Adkins has made eight movies with Florentine and seven with another direct-to-video martial-arts specialist - Jesse V. Johnson, a fellow Brit whose collaborations with Adkins have a low-rent bluntness that's impossible to dislike. Johnson cast Adkins as a down-on-his-luck dojo owner who takes on a job enforcing loans for a mob boss in 2018's The Debt Collector, an excuse for a half-dozen comedic skirmishes with bodyguards and one good enough to fuel a sequel two years later. But it's the 2019 Avengement (a real word, even if it doesn't sound like one) that's Johnson's magnum opus, with Adkins playing a character out for revenge against the gangster brother who betrayed him, weathering countless prison beatings in flashbacks that seem to just burnish his brutal patina. Johnson, like J.J. Perry, has a background in stunt work, a career path that isn't new but that's led to some of the more satisfying action set pieces in recent years - and not just in the direct-to-video market.Perry did stunts on the first two John Wick films, which came from stuntmen turned bigshot Hollywood filmmakers David Leitch and Chad Stahelski. Netflix's previous gritty action hit Extraction was the directorial debut of stunt coordinator Sam Hargrave, who in addition to Marvel movies worked on Leitch's Atomic Blonde and the aforementioned, misbegotten X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Stunt work is obviously a small world, but there's a reliable tangibility to the fight scenes in these movies that's often missing in bigger blockbusters, where everything has become possible and very little of it looks real. In Day Shift, Adkins and Howey join Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco to invade a suburban house that turns out to be home to a vampire hive. While Foxx shoots up bloodsuckers exploding out of the drywall, Adkins stakes vamps in the kitchen, beheads them with a sword, and fences with a bendy lady who wields knives with her feet. Then, in a move that is pure, joyous excess, he reveals blades hidden in his boots and does a twirling kick through the air for no other reason than that it looks cool. It turns out, there's still value to that - to not just being an actor who trains enough to be able to navigate fight scenes with the help of doubles and camera angles, but to be a performer who's able to do something that seems impossible, and who can also act.

The plot is simple-“When two cops witness an assassination attempt, a ruthless crime boss orders Gabriel Tancredi, an ex-Marine turned mob enforcer, to eliminate any and all threats.”  However, like many Johnson films the plot is just the pretext for showcasing the rich characters and launching point for great action and violence. This is R-Rated action for adults that most lighthearted but very entertaining. When is international action star Scott Adkins going to get his big break? Scott Adkins is the leading martial arts movie star in the world today. Growing up in the United Kingdom he had a passion for martial arts and the movies. By age 9 he began his martial arts journey, starting with Judo, and moving on to Taekwondo. He later ventured into the study of Ninjutsu, Krav Maga, Karate, Wushu, Jiujitsu, Muay Thai, and Capoeira. This interview with Taekwondo Life Magazine comes on the release of Scott's highly anticipated sequel to the 2018 Jesse V. Johnson collaboration, The Debt Collector. Debt Collectors (2020) released in the United States on May 29, 2020 to both critical and fan acclaim. Scott spoke with Editor, Marc Zirogiannis, amidst the Corona quarantine about his dual passion for movies and the martial arts. Scott talked candidly about his process for choosing and making high quality martial arts films. In this episode we learn about his journey from the Hong Kong movie scene, where he won the Jackie Chan Award in 2017, to becoming a leading man, fight coordinator, co-writer, and producer of such movies as Accident Man, Avengement, Triple Threat, Ninja, Ninja: Shadow of a Tear, Savage Dog, and the upcoming Adrian Bol film, Legacy of Lies. Debt Collectors (2020) is bloody good fun. This sequel to the 2018’s The Debt Collector, picks up shortly after the explosive end of the original film. A nearly healed French and Sue are reunited for a few final debt collections for their old boss, Tommy, (Vladimir Kulich skillfully reprising the role), as a payback for saving their lives. In the tradition of its predecessor, the duo’s journey to Las Vegas and back to Los Angeles is fraught with obstacles and adversity as vehicles for the film’s bone-crushing action sequences. As the story unfolds we learn that these jobs are more than they appear to be, and have a dangerous connection to their deceased nemesis, Barbosa.Debt Collectors defies the typical notion that “buddy films” have to be formulaic to be successful. Furthermore, it defies the convention that sequels are rarely as good, or even better than, their predecessors. Debt Collectors is fun, explosive, well-scripted, and well directed movie in its own right. As a stand alone it equals, or surpasses The Debt Collector, as a film. Jesse V. Johnson, together with Scott Adkins, have carved out a niche’ as filmmakers that have elevated the action film from a genre where the script and dialogue are ancillary. Their films elevate the elements that support the action and fight choreography as holistic and indistinguishable elements of a great film.In this episode Marc Zirogiannis discusses The Debt Collector Series and reviews this action film.Debt Collectors hits DVD and streaming services on May 29th. I highly recommend it. In fact, during this time when people are consuming more video content, I recommend you make a double-feature of it. Watch these two films back-to-back. They are worth the investment of your time.To Check out Taekwondo Life Magazine's discussion with Jesse V. Debt Collectors is an awesome movie, reuniting French (Scott Adkins) and Sue (Louis Mandylor) who we first saw in Debt Collector. A truly enjoyable, properly cinematic film, great naturalistic lighting, full sound mix, the coolest music all blammoed with shades of Sergio Leone, Tarantino, cowboy Clint Eastwood, Dirty Harry, Bullitt and Lethal Weapon in a Hyundai. Scott Adkins, lead star, and Jesse V Johnson, visionary Director, reveal what it took to get the performances they did. How do you deliver the right lines when you’re in the middle of a fist fight? Why did they fight to exhaustion? Did they use any stunt doubles? How did the 2nd film get off the ground? Whose idea was it? And sooo much more. In this interview, Johnson discusses the various types of stuntmen (including his “ground-pounder” days), how life experience brings something extra to the film, how actor-stuntmen like Keanu Reeves or Matt Damon have changed over the years, and what it’s like to work with world-class stunt performers like Scott Adkins and Tony Jaa. We also discuss Johnson’s films ‘Triple Threat’ and ‘Avengement.’ In the latter, Adkins stars as Cain Burgess. “While released on furlough from prison, a lowly criminal evades his guards and returns to his old haunts to take revenge on the people that made him a cold-hearted killer.” If you enjoyed this interview, join thousands of viewers for the new YouTube series, Creative Principles, which dissects new films, series, and more: bit.ly/2FARJz5

Having now worked with UK martial arts star Scott Adkins a total of six times – including on the films Savage Dog, Accident Man, The Debt Collector, and the soon to be released martial arts movie event of the year, Triple Threat, which also stars Iko Uwais, Michael Jai White, Tony Jaa, Tiger Chen and Michael Bisping – the writer, director and former stunt performer Jesse V. Johnson is right to feel proud of what they have accomplished in a reasonably short space of time. Jesse and Scott continue to produce exceptionally accomplished martial arts action features in an increasingly unsettled world for low-budget filmmaking. But it’s a world Jesse knows only too well. Born in the UK – the nephew of stunt legend Vic Armstrong – Jesse used his earnings as a teenage stunt performer for the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger classic, Total Recall, to relocate to Hollywood, where he balanced stunt work on major studio pictures with directing and writing his own feature films. It hasn’t always been easy, as Jesse explains in this frank and often revealing conversation, and he has had to learn some important lessons along the way; about ambition, integrity, and the craft of filmmaking. He is most proud of his new film, The Debt Collector, an enveloping crime comedy starring Scott Adkins and Louis Mandylor (Martial Law, My Big Fat Greek Wedding), available to watch now on Netflix. It will get its UK big screen premiere at the Fighting Spirit Film Festival in London on 14 September. We also spend time discussing his all-star action extravaganza, Triple Threat. Jesse’s next project with Scott will be called Avengement, which has just wrapped filming in the UK. For the latest information on Jesse V. Johnson, follow him on Facebook and Instagram.
