Der große Jahresrückblick 2025 – Von Kack-Themen, Kaffeeflecken und Kino-Highlights! Jubiläum! Die 250. Folge startet mit einem... sagen wir mal, "organischen" Thema. Timo und Zeljko philosophieren über die biologischen Notwendigkeiten des Lebens (ja, es geht ums Kacken und Pipi machen bei Vögeln!), bevor sie sich den wirklich wichtigen Dingen widmen: Filmen! Nach einem kurzen Exkurs über Zeljkos neues, halliges Aufnahme-Setup im "Playroom" (nein, nicht der Playroom aus Fifty Shades of Grey!) und den alltäglichen Weihnachtsstress, stürzen sich die beiden in ihren großen Jahresrückblick. Timo präsentiert seine Highlights chronologisch und startet mit dem Animationsfilm Flow, der ganz ohne Sprache auskommt und ihn tief berührt hat. Weiter geht's mit The Last Showgirl, in dem Pamela Anderson ein beeindruckendes Comeback feiert, und dem Sci-Fi-Kammerspiel Bugonia von Yorgos Lanthimos, das mit seiner cleveren Story um Aliens und Verschwörungen punktet. Ein besonderes Herzensprojekt war für ihn die norwegische Dark-Fairy-Tale-Satire The Ugly Stepsister. Auch Zeljko hat eine bunte Liste dabei. Sein absolutes Highlight und "Film des Jahres" ist Reflection in a Dead Diamond, ein wilder Mix aus Giallo und Eurospy, der ihn mit seiner einzigartigen Machart komplett geflasht hat. Weitere Favoriten sind der Anime-Blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle und F1 mit Brad Pitt – für ihn ein audiovisuelles Brett, das im Kino einfach Spaß macht. Gemeinsame Nenner finden die beiden bei Weapons, dem neuen Horror-Mystery-Hit von Zach Cregger, und dem überraschend starken Lurker, einem Thriller über Ruhm und Fan-Obsession. Auch die Miniserie Adolescence hat beide gleichermaßen begeistert und emotional mitgenommen. This week on Friday Night Frightfest, we are diving into the twisted world of Edgar Allan Poe adaptations filtered through the lens of Italian horror masters! We're comparing two distinctly different takes on Poe's works, both featuring the iconic killer feline: the atmospheric Giallo-tinged film The Black Cat (1981) from Lucio Fulci, and he anthology film Two Evil Eyes (1990), directed by Dario Argento and George A. Romero. The Black Cat (1981) Directed by the "Godfather of Gore," Lucio Fulci, this film is a loose, Gothic interpretation of Poe's famous short story. Set in a small English village, a psychic professor (Patrick Magee) with a penchant for recording the voices of the dead seems to share a malevolent connection with his black cat. As a series of gruesome, seemingly unrelated deaths plague the community, an American photographer (Mimsy Farmer) and a detective (David Warbeck) race to determine if the feline is truly a supernatural killer, or merely a vessel for the professor's madness. The film is known for its moody atmosphere and surreal Fulci-esque touches. Two Evil Eyes (1990) This anthology film is a collaborative effort between two horror giants, George A. Romero and Dario Argento, with each directing a story based on Poe. Romero's Segment ("The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar"): This segment stars Adrienne Barbeau and E.G. Marshall and focuses on a dying, wealthy man who is hypnotized just before death so his consciousness can be preserved. However, the plan goes horribly wrong when his spirit remains trapped between worlds, leading to a chilling reanimation and the terrifying consequences of cheating death. Argento's Segment ("The Black Cat"): Starring Harvey Keitel, this segment is a stylized adaptation of "The Black Cat." Keitel plays a crime scene photographer who descends into madness and violence after he resents and tortures his girlfriend's pet feline. Argento uses hyper-stylized gore and nightmarish visuals to explore themes of perversity and artistic decay. Join us as we dissect these two distinct adaptations. Author and game designer Tone Milazzo joins me in Derry & Toms as we look at another work by the late, great Robert Sheckley, his first novel Immortality Inc. Your Stupid Minds starts its spooktacular October with a Spanish/Italian collab that numerous Letterboxd reviews describe as "giallo meets Scooby Doo," presumably because there's one mask reveal and some Italians are involved. It's 1972's The Murder Mansion! After an "exciting" car/motorcycle chase, speed demon Fred (Andrés Resino) steals comely hitchhiker Laura (Lisa Leonardo) from sweaty creep Mr. Porter (Franco Fantasia). Meanwhile, neurotic divorcee Elsa (Analía Gadé) races off into the foggy night with some other people. They all find themselves lost in the fog (even after Fred asks directions from the Grim Reaper) and end up at the titular murder mansion, an old house in the foothills of Spain with its very own cemetery! It's overseen by the young Martha Clinton, a descendant of the house's original satanic inhabitants. Soon, strange things begin to occur, not entirely spurred by Fred's morbid fascination with going to the basement. A lumbering chauffeur (not unlike Maniac Cop or Tor Johnson) and an old woman (not unlike Vampiria or an elderly version of Martha) keep menacing the house guests. Is the house really supernatural, or is there a a more earthly, Giallo-like explanation? How many times will Fred go to the basement? Will a murder ever happen in the murder mansion? You'll just have to listen to find out!
