A Sequel by Berlioz

Synopsis These days, no one is surprised if a popular film generates a series of sequels or even prequels, but back in the 1830s the idea of a composer coming up with a sequel to a symphony must have seemed a little odd. But that odd idea did pop into the head of French composer Hector Berlioz. In 1830, Berlioz had a huge hit with his Symphonie fantastique. That Fantastic Symphony told a story through music, based on the composer's own real-life, unrequited love for a British Shakespearian actress. The story ends badly, with our hero trying to end it all with a dose of opium, which, while not killing him, does produce, well, “fantastic” nightmares in which he is condemned to death for killing his beloved who reappears at a grotesque witches' sabbath. That seems a hard act to follow, but two years later, Berlioz produced a musical sequel, entitled “Lelio, or the Return to Life,” which premiered in Paris on today's date in 1832. In this, our hero awakes from his drug-induced nightmare, and, with a little help from Shakespeare and a kind of 10-step arts-based recovery program, rededicates his life to music. Berlioz intended the original and the sequel to be performed together as a kind of double-feature. Alas, while audiences thrill to the lurid Symphonie fantastique, they tend to drift during the admirable, but rather boring rehab sequel, which is rarely performed. First up, take a listen as writer/director MICHAEL KOCH talks about A PIECE OF SKY, Switzerland's submission for the 95th Academy Awards as Best Foreign Language Film. A quiet, reflective, and thoughtful film that tacitly explores the relationship between man and nature, life and death, A PIECE OF SKY is one of the most emotionally beautiful films of the year; not to mention that stunning multi-season imagery of the Swiss mountains. Set in a remote alpine village, (Michèle Brand) works both as a waitress and mail carrier to support her young daughter. She has fallen deeply in love with the village newcomer, Marco (Simon Wisler), a strong and silent farmhand from the lowlands. But soon after their wedding, Marco is diagnosed with a brain tumor. As the seasons change, his behavior grows increasingly erratic, leading up to a severe transgression that threatens to tear the young family apart. Then listen to writer/director SEBASTIAN LELIO discuss the award-worthy film THE WONDER. Directed by Lelio and co-written with Alice Birch based on Emma Donoghue's acclaimed novel and inspired by the 19th-century phenomenon of the "fasting girls", THE WONDER is a stunning psychological thriller set in The Irish Midlands in 1862 where eleven-year-old Anna has stopped eating for months but remains miraculously alive and in relatively well state. Tourists have flocked to the small village to bear witness to Anna, believing her to be a miracle destined for sainthood. In an effort to discover the truth, the village council brings in English nurse Lib Wright to observe Anna and report her findings. Is this a miracle or is there something else afoot? http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Anna O'Donnell (Kíla Lord Cassidy) is an 11-year-old girl who claims not to have eaten for four months, surviving miraculously on “manna from heaven.” As Anna's health rapidly deteriorates, Lib is determined to unearth the truth, challenging the faith of a community that would prefer to stay believing.Pugh shares what fascinates her about playing women battling the societal constraints of their time period, highlights the collaborative relationship between herself and Lelio, and explains how the film's talented chefs made food which was supposed to appear unappealing on camera, surprisingly delicious. She also reveals the inspiration behind her popular video series, "Cooking With Flo," emphasizes the importance of being in control of her own career, and details her perfect day off -- which starts with a sandwich from Marks & Spencer and ends with a martini.

Meanwhile, his most famous and well-rounded recent role as the mysterious Japanese stranger in the South Korean horror epic The Wailing won him the Best Supporting Actor and Popular Star awards at the Blue Dragon Awards, making him the first non-Korean to do so.
