In this episode we take a break from our study of the book of John and talk about the benefits of studying eschatology (the study of last things), and particularly the Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21). I talk about this subject in connection to my book, Signs of the End: What Jesus Taught His Disciples in the Olivet Discourse, and take you on a tour of the different sections of the discourse, talking about the challenges faced in the text and a preview of how they are addressed (which involves reading some excerpts from my book). It goes without saying that you can't have a resurrection if there is no death. For this reason, when it comes to the resurrection of Christ from the grave, He had to have died. The apostle John saw it as important to establish the actual death of Christ by his own witness testimony, as well as by the sovereign fulfillment of Old Testament Scriptures. As Jesus comes closer to the cross, we see Pontius Pilate trying to save Jesus' life. But does this mean that his act was noble and praiseworthy? No! When it comes to the arrest of Jesus Christ, we may not realize just how much God's sovereignty shows forth in the account itself. The peace of Christ is something that does not compare to any other kind of peace the world may attempt to offer. For the disciples and for us by extension, Jesus provides this peace. In the book of John, talk of the unity of the triune God has been mentioned. In John 14 specifically, that unity, particularly of the Father and the Son, is revisited, and it is in the quest to fill the disciples' minds with understanding (even though they should have already understood) and comfort. Many of us are familiar with Jesus' words in John 14:6, where He identifies Himself as the way, and the truth, and the life, and stating that no one comes to the Father except through Him We usually apply this verse evangelistically when preaching the gospel to unbelievers. And while this is a truth that non-Christians should hear, we must understand that in context, this verse is spoken to believers (the disciples). In the days of Jesus and for some time beyond, the Jews did not really fathom the reality that God had an equal intention of drawing Gentiles to faith just as He did to to them.
