As David's enemies attack him on every side all day long, he puts his trust in God. The Word of God is the Christian's praise and trust so that there is no need to fear the power of man, which cannot conquer God and His Word. As the enemies of God persecute His people, God personally knows each of their sufferings so that His people can be certain that God is for them and live according to His Word in thanksgiving for all that He has done.  Rev. Sam Beltz, pastor at St. John Lutheran Church in Oskaloosa, IA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Psalm 56.  To learn more about St. John Lutheran, visit stjohnosky.org. Join Sharper Iron this spring to study selected Psalms. In the Psalter, God speaks His Word to us and teaches us how to speak back to Him in prayer. Even in the great variety of the Psalms, each one points us to our Savior, Jesus Christ.  Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

TODAY'S EPISODE: Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible! On this 10th day of May, day 130 in our journey through Scripture, Hunter invites us to open our hearts and minds as we delve into powerful passages from 2 Samuel 18, Psalm 56, and Matthew 27. Today's episode follows the stories of David's sorrow over Absalom, David's psalm of trust amidst trouble, and the profound events of Jesus' trial and crucifixion. Hunter offers insight into Jesus' cry from the cross, challenging traditional interpretations and reminding us of God's unwavering presence—even in our darkest moments. Join us as we reflect on God's Word, lift our hearts in prayer, and walk together in kindness and faith. TODAY'S DEVOTION: He never abandons us—not even in our darkest hours. On the cross, Jesus cried, "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?" At first glance, it looks like a moment of utter desolation, as if God the Father has turned away from his Son. Many have taught that in this cry, Jesus is forsaken by the Father, or worse still, that God is punishing the Son. But things are not always as they seem. The early church often saw it differently. Jesus is quoting Psalm 22—a psalm that starts with anguish but ends with trust. Like many of David's psalms, it begins with abandonment but always resolves with confession of God's unfailing presence and faithfulness. As the psalm reaches its end, the psalmist declares, "He did not despise or abhor the affliction of the afflicted. He did not turn his face from me but heard when I cried out to him." In the depths of suffering, God does not hide nor forsake, but listens and draws near. So, what does this mean for us? Jesus, in quoting the psalm, enters fully into the depths of human experience—our betrayals, our loneliness, our feelings of abandonment. He knows them all, tasting them as we do. Yet the profound truth is found not just in the cry, but in the assurance that God is present, even when it seems otherwise. Paul declares in 2 Corinthians 5:19 that on the cross, "God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself." There is no division in the Trinity, no rift between the Father and the Son—not then, not ever. And if God did not abandon Jesus in his most desperate hour, he will not abandon you. He is faithful, and his love endures. Let this truth settle deep into your soul. Trust, as Jesus trusted—even when everything in you wishes to surrender to despair. God's love is steadfast. His presence never leaves. You are never beyond the reach of his care. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ.  Amen.  OUR WEBSITE: www.dailyradiobible.com We are reading through the New Living Translation.   Leave us a voicemail HERE: https://www.speakpipe.com/dailyradiobible Subscribe to us at YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Dailyradiobible/featured OTHER PODCASTS: Listen with Apple Podcast DAILY BIBLE FOR KIDS DAILY PSALMS DAILY PROVERBS DAILY LECTIONARY DAILY CHRONOLOGICAL

In our last reading King Balak of Moab had hired Balaam, the professional soothsayer and prophet for hire, to come and put a curse on Israel. The king had heard about how Israel had plowed through the Amorites when that nation refused to let Israel pass through, and he was scared. After two attempts, Balaam finds himself unable to curse Israel, because the God of Israel is so powerful that Balaam must do as the Lord says. Our reading today begins with Balaam's third and final attempt to curse Israel, but instead, when proclaiming a fourth oracle, he prophesies the coming of the Christ. Many scholars believe that this prophecy of the star that comes from Jacob was passed down to the Magi of the gospels, who see the star and travel to see the Christ child. This sermon, centered on Psalm 56, presents a profound meditation on trusting God amid fear, grounded in the psalmist's experience of fleeing from Saul and facing mortal danger in Gath. It emphasizes that true faith is not emotional but rational, rooted in the unchanging character of God—His sovereignty as the Most High, the reliability of His promises, the certainty of His justice, the personal care He extends to His people, and the assurance that He who began a good work in them will complete it. The preacher underscores that fear, though natural, is overcome not by denial of danger but by fixing one's mind on God's eternal purposes: His power to protect, His faithfulness to fulfill His word, His intimate knowledge of every tear and wandering step, and His unwavering commitment to sanctify and preserve His children. The message is both pastoral and convicting, calling believers to trust God not because circumstances are favorable, but because He is faithful, and His work in the soul is already underway and will reach its fulfillment in eternity.

The battle has pressed me all day long.   2  My enemies have chased me all day. There are many of them fighting me.   3  When I am afraid, I will trust you.   4  I praise God for his word. I trust God. So I am not afraid. What can human beings do to me?   5  All day long they twist my words. All their evil plans are against me.   6  They wait. They hide. They watch my steps. They hope to kill me.   7  God, do not let them escape. Punish the foreign nations in your anger.   8  You have recorded my troubles. You have kept a list of my tears. Aren't they in your records?   9  On the day I call for help, my enemies will be defeated. I know that God is on my side.   10  I praise God for his word to me. I praise the Lord for his word.   11  I trust in God. I will not be afraid. What can people do to me?   12  God, I must keep my promises to you. I will give you my offerings to thank you.   13  You have saved me from death. You have kept me from being defeated. So I will walk with God in light among the living.

Uncertainty is a common problem for mankind. Whether we are waiting for a medical test to come back or we are in a situation outside of our control, uncertainty stirs up fear and grief, causing us to draw away from God, not near to him. Whether we are in uncertain circumstances or not, the call is still the same: give thanks to the Lord. Psalm 56 offers a stunning vision of how uncertainty must drive us to faith and thanksgiving in our trustworthy God.

Today's episode is an UPDATE on what is happening with the Feast of Trumpets that you don't want to miss!  I also am covering the random turning for today, which comes to us from Psalm 56: 1-13: "Prayer for Relief from Tormentors."  David shows how you can trust God more than anyone else and how you can be open with Him about all your thoughts, issues, problems, and praises.  You are 100% safe to open up to God, and you ought to because He knows what you're thinking and doing at all times anyway, so you're not going to surprise Him with your vulnerabilities and admissions to Him.  In fact doing so brings you closer to Him in your own perspective of intimacy, knowing that He will always love you no matter what you do, so long as you remain humble and have a healthy fear, and a contrite heart toward Him. What a blessing to know that, isn't it! If you are blessed by today's Bible study, please support my channel by liking, subscribing, commenting, and sharing with your friends and family!  I am not a Pastor, and agree with God's word that women are not supposed to be Pastors.  However, all people are called to share the gospel. It is perfectly acceptable and Biblical for women to lead Bibles studies outside the church as an ancillary addition to the church, and especially if it is a viable avenue for study of the Word on a daily basis, like I'm doing on this show, and paving the way for all of us to be closer to the Lord and become more knowledgeable of the Bible.  If you care to contribute to my work with the Daily Bible study and sharing the Gospel, as part of your tithes and offerings, you can do so through PayPal by sending it to my PayPal address of: ReneHoladay@gmail.com You are also welcome to email me at the same email address above if you have any thoughts you'd like to share about this episode!    Thank you for watching and God Bless you all! ;() Transcript

So Much More: Creating Space for God (Lectio Divina and Scripture Meditation)

In this guided Scripture meditation on Psalm 56:8–11, you’ll be invited to rest in the truth that God sees your sorrow, hears your cries, and is on your side. Life doesn’t always feel that way—especially when we’re walking through grief, longing, or fear. But Psalm 56 reminds us that every tear you cry is noticed, collected, and remembered by the God who loves you. And not only does He see you—He is with you. Through the practice of Lectio Divina, we’ll reflect on this short but powerful Psalm of trust, written by David in the middle of deep distress. You’ll be guided to: Reflect on what sorrow or unmet longing you’re holding today Remember that God has not forgotten you—He holds your tears and your future Rest in the truth that you are fully known and fully loved This is a quiet space to be honest with God—and let Him gently meet you in it. Fr. Mike reveals how David exemplifies the virtues of reverence and faithfulness.
