Whenever I hear the phrase "he made the cut" or "making the cut" I think of players on some sort of sports team or something where they had to go through a great testing period before they were considered acceptable enough to move on up to the final action, or be drafted. I tried to look that phrase or idiom up and apparently it is used a lot in golf lol. I couldn't seem to find the phrase origin but in my mind, I also thought of the early origin of the film industry when the editors physically cut out parts of a film and if your performance wasn't good enough, you might, as they say, "end up on the cutting room floor" and possibly even cut out of the movie's end credits! The fact is, that none of us want to be cut out of the action. None of us want to be cut out of the winnings and rewards that come from participating in the action either! And do you know that the Lord doesn't want to cut us out? But WE are the ones who are making a decision day by day as to whether we are IN Christ or OUT of Christ. That is a choice WE make. And John 15 goes over this and describes the results of not "abiding" in Christ. Disobedience to the Word of God is one way to not abide. Loving our idols and the things that take our heart or service away from Him is not abiding. Accepting the principles of this world and making them our truths and placing them above the stated Word of God is not abiding in Him. When we choose to sin. When we choose to not forgive. When we're "too busy" to go to church or to do something God has directed us to do. When we spiritualize disobedience, meaning, we say that "the Holy Spirit told me" to do this or that which is in direct contradiction to a command so clearly defined in the Bible but looks good to others when you say it. No that is called a slap in the Lord's face. What is it then? Is it through works that we make the cut then? Jesus spoke of having a confrontation in the future with these so-called "Christian" believers who were doing some pretty convincing works, signs as you might say of a believer: "Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." (Matthew 7: 22-23) May God have mercy on us! Today is the day of salvation! Today is the day that we make a choice to repent and turn back toward the Lord, to KNOW HIM is to KNOW HIS WORD AND OBEY IT. "Working iniquity" is actively choosing to disobey God's Word or even claiming ignorance to it! We can break the law here on earth and still be fined despite claiming ignorance to it! How much more does God consider His Law holy?? We cannot plead the Blood of Jesus or come under His Wings of protection if we are actively disobeying Him. And we can only learn how to obey Him and do His Works with His help, with the Helper He gave us, the Holy Spirit. It is He who guides us into all Truth (John 16:13), and who is the Truth? Jesus said "I am the Way, the Life and the Truth" (John 14:6) and we know in John 15--apart from Jesus WE CAN DO NOTHING (John 15:5)! And the opposite is true!  With faith in God and obedience to His Word, we can do the impossible things that the Father tells us to do and that is the difference (Hebrews 11:6)! That is why we need His Word AND the Guide, His Holy Spirit. For when we choose to not "abide" in Him as John 15 describes, we are shriveled branches of the Vine --yikes!--and the Bible says that "men" will gather those branches up to be "burned". We may look good to others even as we walk in disobedience and the Bible warns us NOT to be those or associate with those who have chosen the religious "form of godliness but deny the power thereof" in 2 Timothy 3:5. Persecution does come to believers butSupport the show

If John's Gospel is a testimony that calls readers to believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, it should not surprise us to find witnesses, judgments, trials, and the need for the reader to make a decision: Who do you say Christ is? In the other three Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), the climactic moments of Jesus's earthly life result in a trial that sentences Christ to the cross. In John's Gospel, the same trial is recorded, but in actuality, that trial spans the whole book. In John 3, Nicodemus comes to question Jesus. In John 4, it is the Samaritan woman. In John 5, it is the Jewish leaders. In John 6, it is the crowds whom Jesus fed. And now in John 7, it is Jesus's brothers and the crowds in Jerusalem who question Jesus. Not surprisingly, the life and works of Jesus divide the people, even as the person and work of Christ continue to divide humanity. Who is Jesus? Is he good or evil? Lord or lunatic? Savior or imposter? These are questions that continue to have weight today, even as they did in the days of Christ. On Sunday, we will face these questions head on, to see again that Jesus is the Son who is bringing light into the world. Indeed, such light produces different results, but it is light that we must all come to see and render a verdict on. For in fact, his light is actually exposing our hearts and testing our faith. In preparation for Sunday, take time to read John 7. Notice how it begins with Jesus's brothers and ends with Nicodemus. Clearly, John is showing us how he is bringing people into the light. And for those of us who live in a world of darkness, we need to see how. Take time to pray for our service and for those who come. May God shine his light upon us, as we gather to gaze at his grace and glory. As the Lord allows, I look forward to seeing you Sunday. For His Glory and your joy, Pastor David ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Discussion & Response Questions: John 7:1-36 How do the characters in these verses respond to Jesus? (his brothers, the crowds, the people of Jerusalem, the chief priests and Pharisees) How does the structure of John 7 help us understand the message? Why does Jesus decline to go to the feast with his brothers? Is he lying? Or is something else going on? How do the people see Jesus? (vv. 11-12) What does Jesus reveal about his teaching? What does this reveal about the mission of the Son? As many are misjudging Jesus, what does Jesus rightly judge about them? What do we learn about our own standing before Jesus? What is the crowds' misunderstanding of the Messiah's identity? (vv. 24-27) What is this passage revealing about Jesus' hour? From what we see of Jesus in these verses, how should we respond to Him? What does the triad of Sabbath, Circumcision, and the Law teach us about the gospel and our response to God in Christ?

Cantate Introit: Ps. 98:1b, 3-4; antiphon: Ps. 98:1a,2b Old Testament: Is. 12:1-6 Psalm 66:1-8 (antiphon: v. 5) Epistle: James 1:16-21 ProperVerse: Ps. 118:16, Romans 6:9 Gospel: John 16:5-15 Jesus Promises to Send His Holy Spirit, the Helper Though Jesus has departed from us visibly to the right hand of the Father who sent Him, yet this is to our advantage. For Jesus-who is Lord over all creation, who intercedes for us before the Father, who is preparing a place for us in heaven-has sent the Helper, the Spirit of Truth (John 16:5-15). "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights" through Jesus Christ (James 1:17). The Holy Spirit helps us by taking what is Christ's and declaring it to us. In the Word of truth, the Spirit works repentance and delivers to us the forgiveness of sins, the righteousness of Christ, and victory over the devil. For the ruler of this world is judged and defeated by the cross. Through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, we have been brought forth to new life in Him who is the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. Confident of our resurrection with Christ we confess, "Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid" (Is. 12:2).

This week BibleWorm reads the story of Jesus's trial before the Roman governor Pilate as told in John 18:28-40. We talk about the complex interaction of religious authority and political authority and the ways they often operate to avoid taking responsibility for their actions. We discuss the concept of truth and what truth even means in an age of misinformation, disinformation, and propaganda. And we wrestle with what it means to follow a king who refuses to wield the power of death over and against the enemy but instead submits to death in self-giving love, giving witness to the ultimate power of life. Can the kingdoms of the earth follow this path of love? According to this text, they cannot. But can we? That is the question.
