The first witness the jury heard in the Jared Bridegan murder trial wasn't a detective. It was a woman named Jonelle Cruz who found Bridegan's two-year-old daughter Bexley alone in a car seat on a dark Jacksonville Beach road, shaking and asking about her dad.Prosecutors opened Monday in a Duval County courtroom by calling the killing a targeted ambush. Mario Fernandez Saldana, a former Army drill sergeant who married Bridegan's ex-wife Shanna Gardner, is the first of three defendants to face a jury. He sat listening to the evidence without visible expression.Assistant State Attorney Christina Simak Stifler told the jury Fernandez recruited a man named Henry Tenon for the job. GPS data from a vehicle linked to Tenon showed two trips along Bridegan's exact route before the murder on February 16, 2022. A dark blue Ford F-150 with a tire in its bed was seen near the road an hour before the shooting.Stifler explained the motive: a family trust. Gardner's parents founded Stampin' Up!, a company generating hundreds of millions in annual revenue. An irrevocable trust blocked Gardner from becoming trustee while she had legal entanglements with Bridegan. As long as he was alive fighting for custody of their twins, she couldn't touch the money.After Bridegan was dead, ten thousand dollars in checks from a company funded through the trust were deposited into accounts linked to Tenon. Phone records show thirty-five calls between Fernandez and Tenon in February 2022 alone.Defense attorney James Hill pushed back. No eyewitness places Fernandez at the scene. No DNA ties him to the road. For years, Maghribi calligraphy has been treated as amateurish, archaic, and unruly in contrast with the highly theorised conventions of Mashriqi calligraphy in the so-called centre of the Islamic world of Egypt, the Levant, and Anatolia. In this episode, Umberto challenges this view, emphasising the interaction of Maghribi calligraphy with multiple traditions specific to its geographical milieu.Maghribi calligraphy is traditionally written with a pointed tip (Ar. قلم مدبب) meaning that the line is always of equal thickness. It features distinctive curved letter forms, extended horizontals, and notation of certain Arabic letters below the main body.Umberto's work on Maghribi calligraphy forms part of CallFront, a collaborative research project that attempts to draw attention to the calligraphic traditions of the “frontiers” of the Islamic world, amongst them Maghribi, but also sub-Saharan Africa, South East Asia, and China.Umberto Bongianino is Samir Shamma Associate Professor of Numismatics, Epigraphy, and Material Culture at the Khalili Research Centre, University of Oxford. A former police officer once spent thirteen years in prison for murdering his own family. The evidence that put him there was blood spatter. The thing that finally freed him was DNA — unidentified male DNA from the scene that, once someone actually tested it, pointed to the real killer.That case is David Camm. And Alex Murdaugh's defense team just cited it by name.In a motion filed ahead of Murdaugh's retrial, his lawyers asked the court to release DNA recovered from under Maggie Murdaugh's fingernails — DNA the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division determined came from an unknown, unrelated male and, the defense says, never analyzed any further. They want it sent to Othram, the forensic genetic genealogy lab credited with cracking some of the coldest cases in the country.The Camm parallel goes deeper than most coverage noticed. The blood-spatter analyst who testified against David Camm is the same analyst South Carolina brought in to examine Alex Murdaugh's shirt — and according to defense filings, his first report on that shirt said the opposite of what he later concluded.It would be dishonest to pretend the DNA is a magic key. A trace under a fingernail can come from a handshake, a doorknob, a passing contact, and "unknown male" is not "the killer." The Camm case had stronger evidence: a garment an intruder left behind, plus fingerprints. A skin cell under a nail is a thinner thread. But the defense isn't arguing it's proof. They're arguing the state caught it, labeled it, and stopped. Day One of the Kelsey Fitzsimmons trial is in the books, and the testimony, the arguments, and the courtroom confrontations that unfolded Monday in Lawrence, Massachusetts set up what is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched criminal trials in New England this year.Fitzsimmons, a 29-year-old North Andover police officer, is charged with one count of assault with a dangerous weapon. The charge stems from a June 30, 2025 encounter at her home, where fellow officer Patrick Noonan shot her in the chest while serving a restraining order obtained by her then-fiancé, North Andover firefighter Justin Aylaian. The order handed Aylaian emergency custody of their four-month-old son and required Fitzsimmons to immediately surrender her firearms. Fitzsimmons has pleaded not guilty.The prosecution told Judge Jeffrey Karp that Fitzsimmons grabbed her service weapon, aimed it at Noonan's face, pulled the trigger — and survived only because the gun had no round in the chamber. She then performed a tap rack, successfully loaded a round, and raised the weapon a second time. Noonan fired twice. One shot struck her in the chest.The defense told the judge none of that is accurate. Fitzsimmons was in crisis — diagnosed with postpartum depression months before the shooting, previously hospitalized, and facing the loss of her child and her career in a single afternoon. She reached for that gun to harm herself, not Noonan. The weapon, Bradl argued, was at her own temple. Its location when she fell — under her leg — is physical evidence that it was never raised toward Noonan. And Noonan's words in those seconds, "Kelsey, no," are not what you say, Bradl argued, when a gun is aimed at your face.Noonan testified Monday on direct and faces cross-examination Tuesday. Aylaian also testified, and the defense used cross to establish he is currently on administrative leave from the fire department following conduct allegations. Fitzsimmons waived her right to a jury.
