Psalm 142 — When No One Cares, God Is Your RefugeBy Dave JenkinsWalking Through the Psalms | Servants of Grace PodcastShow SummaryThere are seasons in the Christian life when believers feel unseen, forgotten, and alone. Psalm 142 speaks directly into those moments with honesty, hope, and gospel comfort. In this episode of Walking Through the Psalms, Dave Jenkins walks through Psalm 142 and shows how David cried out to the Lord from a place of isolation and distress. This psalm reminds Christians that even when no one else seems to care, the Lord sees, hears, sustains, and delivers His people.Psalm 142 points us ultimately to Christ, who was abandoned so that His people would never be forsaken.Listen or WatchAudio:Video:Key Scripture“I cry to you, O Lord; I say, ‘You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.'”Psalm 142:5Episode HighlightsWhy Psalm 142 speaks so powerfully to loneliness and sufferingHow David teaches us to bring honest prayers before the LordWhy God knows our way when others do not understandHow the Lord is both our refuge and our portionWhy Christians need biblical community and the local churchHow Psalm 142 points us forward to ChristPsalm 142 and the Hope of ChristPsalm 142 reminds us that faith does not deny reality. David does not pretend his pain is small. He cries out to the Lord honestly, confessing that he is overwhelmed, alone, and in need of deliverance.Yet in the middle of that sorrow, David turns to the Lord and confesses, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.” This is the hope of every Christian. When support disappears and circumstances feel unbearable, the Lord remains faithful. This psalm also points us to Jesus Christ. Christ was betrayed, rejected, abandoned, and crucified in the place of His people. Because He was forsaken for sinners, those who trust in Him will never be abandoned by God.Reflection QuestionsWhere are you tempted to feel unseen or forgotten right now?Are you bringing your burdens honestly before the Lord in prayer? How does Psalm 142:5 comfort you in seasons of loneliness?Who are trusted believers in your local church who can help bear your burdens? How does Christ's finished work give you hope when you feel alone?Call to ActionIf this episode encouraged you, please subscribe to the Servants of Grace Podcast and share it with someone who may be walking through a lonely or difficult season. You can find more from our latest series on Psalms here or at our YouTube.

One Year Bible Podcast: Join Hunter and Heather Barnes on the Daily Radio Bible, a daily Bible‑in‑a‑year podcast with 20‑minute Scripture readings, Christ‑centered devotion, and guided prayer. This daily Bible reading and devotional invites you to live as a citizen of Jesus' kingdom, reconciled, renewed, and deeply loved. TODAY'S EPISODE: Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible, where we journey through Scripture together each day. On this April 27th episode, Hunter, your Bible reading coach, leads us through pivotal passages spanning 2 Samuel, 1 Chronicles, Psalms, and the Gospel of Matthew. Today's readings highlight the anointing of David as king, the courageous exploits of his mighty warriors, David's cry for help in Psalm 142, and powerful moments from Jesus' ministry—including the feeding of the five thousand and Peter walking on water. Alongside Scripture, Hunter reflects on life's complexities, the storms that teach us, and the wisdom we seek for our journey. Stay tuned for thoughtful prayers, encouragement, and a reminder that through it all, you are deeply loved. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Not all troubles are as they seem. Not all storms are as they appear. Sometimes, what looks like chaos is really a classroom, and the lesson isn't always pass or fail. God, in his wisdom, can use the tests of life—the wind and the waves themselves—as teaching assistants, drawing us deeper into understanding his heart for us. It's often in those dark moments, the stormy nights when we're most weary and afraid, that Jesus calls us out of our comfort. That's what happened to Peter. Out in the storm, at his weakest point, Peter is invited to step out of the boat and do something unimaginable: walk on water. It's in coming to the end of ourselves, coming up empty and unable, that God can begin to fill and empower and show us what's possible when our eyes are on him. This is the lesson of letting God be God. When we turn our gaze toward him—even as the wind blows and the waves rise—we find ourselves sustained by his power in new and unthinkable ways. But if, like Peter, our focus shifts to our fears, we'll find ourselves sinking just the same. The storm can either draw our focus toward him or away from him. The choice is ours. So the real invitation is this: Keep your eyes on Jesus in the storm. Let the troubles of life press you into his embrace, not away. May we heed his call and know his joy, even when we don't understand, even when we're scratching our heads at life's complexities or what we read in Scripture. Let's pray for that focus, for that wisdom, for that joy to shape our hearts and families and lives. That's the prayer I have for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife, and my daughters, and my son. And that's the prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ.  Amen.  OUR WEBSITE: www.dailyradiobible.com We are reading through the New Living Translation.   Leave us a voicemail HERE: https://www.speakpipe.com/dailyradiobible Subscribe to us at YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Dailyradiobible/featured OTHER PODCASTS: Listen with Apple Podcast DAILY BIBLE FOR KIDS DAILY PSALMS DAILY PROVERBS DAILY LECTIONARY DAILY CHRONOLOGICAL

Hiding from Saul in a cave, David lays his complaint fully before the LORD. He prays in confidence that although his enemies have laid a trap for him, the LORD's knowledge of his way will prevail. When no one else seems to notice David as he is in the midst of great trouble, the LORD brings David out of the prison so that he is not actually alone. The LORD surrounds David with His righteous ones, as He still does for us today in the Church.  Rev. Andy Wright, pastor at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Topeka, KS, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Psalm 142.  To learn more about St. John's, visit stjohnlcmstopeka.org. Join Sharper Iron this summer to study selected Psalms. In the Psalter, God speaks His Word to us and teaches us how to speak back to Him in prayer. Even in the great variety of the Psalms, each one points us to our Savior, Jesus Christ.  Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

Again revealed in the title, Psalm 57 was also written in hiding during David's fugitive wanderings.  This occasion served to inspired David to seek the assurance of divine protection far greater than the refuge the cave in Adullam could ever provide him. I Sam 22:1-2 documents the first congregation to ever sing this song. There were gathered to him and his family in this hideout, a motley crew of those in distress, debt, and bitter of soul about 400 strong. We can imagine David singing softly with pen in hand accompanied by a waning candle, his voice and the flickering light reflecting off of ancient stone cavern walls.  Some distance away at the cave's entrance, several of his men stand guard with watchful eyes probing the distance for the dust of enemy horsemen. After repeating his new chorus several times, the cave begins to echo with hundreds of outcast voices singing: “…With my voice I cry out to the LORD; with my voice I plead for mercy to the LORD.
