new mixes on thursdays from special guests around the globe, and rotations by residents: max (@maxsalty) mikayla (@rulingplanet) ariella (@saffronnnnnn) radha (@radha_v) zach (@znivens)
There's just something about that first chill in the air, hailing the arrival of autumn, that makes @maxsalty ravenously crave shoegaze, dreampop, and indie rock. This mix is his ode to the strange emotional potency of autumn, featuring simple, bittersweet indie songs with crisp, windy exteriors and warm inner cores. Ideal listening for a chilly, contemplative solo walk through a changing landscape...
We're back this week with an exuberant 80s-centric mix by interior designer Travis Trew, who has returned to mmarz to serve up "a musical jello salad chock-full of tender bleepy-bloopies." Press play for an hour of eccentric, candy-coated new wave gems that feel like unearthed cult classics — or the soundtrack to a long-lost summer flick written by Éric Rohmer and directed by John Waters. Tracklist: mmarzmix.com/136
This week, we're excited to share Ben Croze's mmarz debut, an hour-long mixtape full of smooth tunes for a bright summer afternoon. Whether you're spending the season at home or far away, take this time to open the windows, sit back, and let the breeze in... Tracklist: mmarzmix.com/135
We're back this week with a thoughtful guest mix by writer Shawn Cremer, aka @scremes, who offers the following words to all who press play: "Pause before we begin. Take a deep inhale. Yes, you. Come here. Venez. Open your senses to the music of Incense Incognita. She begins with top notes of muscatel and vetiver, do you smell that? It blooms. In the middle comes rain-soaked moss and smooth black stones. Close and damp and muddy sweet. It seeps. It sings. Then, rolling through to drier ground, where kopal smoke drifts through the eucalyptus trees at night. Perhaps we'll go in for a drink. Come back for another inhale. The base notes. The anchors that linger. Follow your nose into the depth of the music. The hinoki cedar and the night blooming cereus float over the sweet steam of oolong. Exhale." Tracklist: mmarzmix.com/134
Harken! For @maxsalty has returned with his annual winter mix, just in time for the holidays. Mezzanotte is Italian for midnight, and indeed this mix is the moodiest entry in the Italian quartet, to be uncorked at that hour of the night when your quiet desires find their loudest voice. Press play for vintage Italian ballads, velvety vocal jazz, and cozy, eerie strings from 1959–1974. Note: Our house sommelier recommends pairing with a Chanti Classico, solitude, cold night winds, and a single candle. Tracklist: mmarzmix.com/132
Our emotional state is a vast ocean of no-time, speckled with nonlinear and nonsensical islands of experience. Tracklist: mmarzmix.com/131 @barelyminimal
We're psyched to debut a guest mix this week from our friends at @flow-state-fm! Press play for a curated, 99-minute history of three centuries of instrumental music, and check out Flow State at www.flowstate.fm for your daily fix of music perfect for working. "Here is a mix that chronicles the blossoming of our interest in instrumental music. These tracks had a combination of notes and timbres that shot us off into the direction of curating instrumentals daily. Maybe they will point you, too, in the direction of pure music." Tracklist: mmarzmix.com/130

This week, mmarz resident @maxsalty whips out his hotly anticipated tribute to the 90s. Though hailing from an assortment of genres (all of which, in this mixer's opinion, saw their finest examples in the 90s), the tracks on this mix are unified by the coolness, rawness, and lust for danger associated with Gen X counterculture. Press play for an hour of sexy, angry, nonconformist tunes guaranteed to make you feel like a hot villain. xx. Tracklist: mmarzmix.com/127
A ~very~ small fraction of the hundreds of 80s songs I love so dearly. Tracklist: https://mmarzmix.com/126 @radha_v

"Some key ideas that come to mind when I think about this set: Divine. Healing. Blending old and new. Exploring sounds. Deep. Non-genre." @yair-shayovitz, a.k.a. DJ BarBur, is a partner and creator of the Bad Event brand, as well as a music producer, a booker at the prestigious Phi Garden Club in Tel Aviv and an active DJ in the city's underground. His love for music started through the gaming world of the late 90s. The aesthetic of nostalgic electronic sound always brought him back home, no matter where he was in the world. To this day, his search for that warm, sophisticated and enveloping sound continues... Tracklist: mmarzmix.com/121
Rejoice! To round out the year, @maxsalty returns with the third installment of his extra near-and-dear Italian trilogy. Innamorato is Italian for "in love," and this mix features nothing but the most delicious, lovestruck sounds produced between 1955 and 1971. Press play for an hour of rosy-eyed film score moments, soft satin blues from American female jazz vocalists, and tender balladry from old school Italian crooners. Best enjoyed with red wine and misty eyes. Tracklist: mmarzmix.com/120
@privacysettings recorded this mix for an imagined night of security cameras squishing under platform heels: a moody and tense environment turns kooky and ecstatic when the zoom lenses and video cables break down like disposable water cups. Tracklist: mmarzmix.com/119
mmarz resident @maxsalty is back with the sexiest, grooviest, 90s-est hour of your life. This mix progresses from dark and sultry to funky and dancey, featuring ultra-soft female voices, spoken word, and 90s drumbeats throughout. Press play to enjoy the juicy fruits of one man's unending search for end-of-millennium goodness.
This week, camp connoisseur Travis Trew delivers a potpourri of exuberant musical tchotchkes from forgotten disco divas, new wave weirdos, faux-naïfs, and actual naïfs: "Last weekend I stumbled into a bar where decommissioned animatronic puppets from It's Small World caroused and drank their troubles away. Late into the night they gyrated wildly on the dancefloor and gorged themselves on banana Runts while these songs played on the jukebox. When I regained consciousness the next morning, a tender new tattoo on my left buttock read, 'I Love Sweet William.' Who is Sweet William? I may never know." Tracklist: mmarzmix.com/117
This week, mmarz is honored to present a special guest mix by the Paris-based musician Joseph Schiano di Lombo (@joseph-schiano-di-lombo). A pianist and composer whose solo work has been featured in past mmarz mixes, Joseph delivers an hour of haunting and meditative tunes that live in the nether-space « entre la mort et la beauté. » Press play for a sonic experience that floats seamlessly between medieval vocals and contemporary synths, poetry and percussion. This week, we're excited to present a synth-laden, 80s-inspired mix by special guest @simfossil: “The theme of this mix is a certain new age sound and flavor from 80s recordings. I traced this sound through the work of many Japanese artists (hence the Shibas on the cover) and I would say this became the backbone of the mix: music by the legendary Haruomi Hosono, Yuji Toriyama and many more. The vibe is unique and experimental, a new age-y, jazz-rock-y type of deal. I've been quite inspired for a long time by the character and creativity of this era; something about the guitar and instrumentation gives it that special touch. Personally, as a producer, I'm a big fan of Yamaha instruments, in particular the DX7, which I've come to associate with this time in music. Though Japanese artists are the central thread, I've made a kind of fusion of many different things that to me capture this special flavor.” Tracklist: mmarzmix.com/114
