When we talk about mythic fiction, it's easy to assume mythic stories are created through familiar ingredients: archetypes, symbolism, old myths, epic structure. But I don't think that's where mythic storytelling begins. In this post/podcast, I explore seven practices and mindsets that help writers reconnect with what the lost art of mythmaking--not just borrowing of old symbolic forms, but accessing the deeper creative process from which meaningful stories emerge in the first place. We talk about: • Why mythic stories often feel like they come *through* us rather than *from* us • How dreamzoning and flow states support deeper storytelling • Why "shoulds" can block archetypal imagination • How asking questions opens access to mythic resonance • The deeper shape beneath story structure • Why confronting the shadows matters for writers • How mythic storytelling functions as transformation and initiation Mythic fiction isn't just a genre or an aesthetic. At its deepest level, it is a way of relating to story itself. If you've ever wanted to write stories that feel more alive, more resonant, or more meaningful, but weren't sure how to move beyond technique alone, this conversation offers a practical place to begin. 01:50 What Is Mythic Fiction? 02:34 What Mythic Fiction Is Not 04:07 What Mythic Fiction Is 05:12 The Lost Art of Mythmaking 06:31 Practice #1: Entering the Flow State 08:49 Practice #2: Clear the "Shoulds" That Block Archetypal Imagination 09:58 Practice #3: Ask Questions Instead of Arriving With Answers 11:32 Practice #4: Study the Deeper Shape Beneath Story Structure 12:56 Practice #5: Study the Stories That Create Mythic Resonance 15:07 Practice #6: Be Fearless Enough to Enter the Shadows 17:11 Practice #7: Approach Archetypal Storytelling With Humility and Responsibility 18:16 Learning How to Imagine Better 19:22 Writing Masterclass: Alchemizing Plot, Character, and Theme Read the transcript: https://helpingwritersbecomeauthors.com/how-to-write-mythic-fiction-practices LINKS & RESOURCES Want More? Deri Llewellyn-Davies, Strategist & Board Advisor and Founder of Freedom Founders, explains that peak performance is a state problem, not a motivation problem — you shift it by choosing flow, focus, peak, recovery, and connect states through breathwork, phone-free mornings, and purpose. Most leaders think better performance comes from working harder. Dr. Murray Heber argues that mindset may be a much bigger factor than effort. In this episode of The Executive Commute, Jayson Krause and Dr. Murray Heber explore the science of flow state, why high performers burn out, and how leaders can create the conditions for peak performance without relying on constant pressure. They discuss the difference between playing to win and playing not to lose, why curiosity is one of the most powerful tools available to leaders, and how confusion can sometimes be the pattern interrupt needed to break cycles of stress, anxiety, and overthinking. This conversation explores: what flow state actually is why grinding eventually stops working how leaders unintentionally block performance the relationship between curiosity and creativity why urgency can undermine innovation how to create the conditions for team flow Follow Jayson Krause YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@JaysonKrauseLeadership File lives here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1v0QiTchc7WibsnSKcihDx2cEDBhhku5_/view?usp=drive_link

Text Analysis - Forgiveness and Illusions: Jevon Perra and Soo Kim review a section of "The Song of Prayer," focusing on the nature of forgiveness and how it relates to illusions. They discuss the text's assertion that one should not dictate the form forgiveness takes, noting that the form of illusions does not actually matter, although they acknowledge that humans often struggle because they are attached to specific outcomes and the forms their lives take.Spiritual Pursuits and Morality: Jevon Perra contrasts their previous religious experiences, which were based on moral codes and the avoidance of punishment, with their current understanding. They define the new perspective as a shift away from "deserving" punishment toward pursuing contentment, noting that if current methods for finding happiness are not working, they can be abandoned.Suffering and Attachment: Jevon Perra notes that suffering often stems from an attachment to specific forms, whether the suffering arises from desiring things one does not have or fearing the loss of things one currently possesses. They conclude that being committed to the "form" of life leads to a cycle of suffering, regardless of whether the person has the desired outcome or not.Navigating Projection and Judgments: Soo Kim shares an experience from a medical office where a classmate expressed a desire to live in isolation to avoid people and specific regional groups. Soo Kim reflects on how they previously would have tried to "fix" or lecture the classmate about projections, but instead, they were able to observe the classmate's perspective as a puzzle, choosing to release the need to change the other person.Life Challenges as Polishing: Jevon Perra references the Sufi poet Rumi, discussing how life challenges act as a "rub" that polishes the individual, removing rough spots. They note that resistance to these difficulties—such as complaining about family members or people in conversations—is a failure to embrace the process of personal development.Acceptance of Family and Friends: The participants discuss the difficulty of interacting with family or friends who hold different beliefs or act in ways they perceive as "wrong". Jevon Perra suggests that rather than trying to change these individuals or fix their problems, one can choose to simply be present with them and let go of the need for the other person to be different.Identity, Image, and Projection: Jevon Perra identifies a personal tendency to worry about how they appear to others, which they define as an ego-driven desire for status or respect. They observe that viewing others as "buffoons" or embarrassing is a projection of their own concern about their own image, which causes them significant discomfort. The Trap of Saving Others: Soo Kim and Jevon Perra discuss the "savior" complex, where they feel the need to fix or save others. Jevon Perra acknowledges that for years they were caught in the mind, believing they were freeing others while actually attempting to validate their own righteousness and prove they were worthy of love.Defining Forgiveness as a Function: Continuing their reading, the participants identify that their only true function is to forgive. They discuss how they frequently confuse this function with other actions, such as trying to save, fix, or overpower others, which are all methods of maintaining separation and control.Personality Dynamics and Conflict: Jevon Perra discusses Enneagram type 8 behaviors, noting that these individuals may use their power and anger to "defend the defenseless" or suppress others they view as weak. They observe that this often manifests as a constant need to fight and poke at others to test their worthiness to be heard.Scarcity and the Illusion of Time: The participants analyze how business environments, specifically sales, are structured around self-imposed scarcity. Soo Kim mentions a previous discussion regarding time as an illusion and observes that while their classmate used this concept to dismiss professional concerns, they recognize that time—along with other limits—is essential to the current existence and the "game" of the personality.Energy and the Personality: Jevon Perra suggests that individuals spend an immense amount of energy maintaining the "personality," which they describe as a tiny peephole through which the larger self views reality. They note that this intense focus intentionally blinds people to the broader "happening" of life, as if they are orchestrating a complex, precise operation through a narrow aperture.Somatic Experiences and Sound Bath: Soo Kim recounts a recent experience playing a new gong, describing how they were able to enter a state where time seemed to disappear. They note that after this intense meditative state, they felt disconnected from social norms and had difficulty engaging in typical linear conversations.Flow States and Social Engagement: Jevon Perra compares spiritual "out of body" flow states to stage fright, noting that stage fright involves being hyper-aware of the body, while flow involves being hyper-detached. They observe that when one identifies with the "bigger self" and lets go of the personality, it becomes difficult to maintain the distinct boundaries of right and wrong, good and bad, which makes social interactions more challenging.Final Text Review and Forgiveness: The participants complete their reading of the section, emphasizing that forgiveness is the key to opening the door to the "shining face of Christ" and seeing one's brother as they were created. Jevon Perra reiterates that the people who cause the most internal resistance are the very ones triggering the projection of separation, and the goal is to stop projecting these judgments.Reframing Life Circumstances: Jevon Perra concludes that life situations, such as dealing with a spouse or community, are not meant to make one "happy" in the conventional sense, but rather serve as opportunities to surface internal judgments. They argue that the focus should be on recognizing these judgments and the subsequent discomfort to release them, rather than trying to fix the world. Conclusion of Study and Reflection: The participants determine they have been studying this material for 11 months, noting that they began the process around last July. Soo Kim expresses appreciation for Jevon Perra's patience and the journey they have shared, and Jevon Perra confirms the value of the partnership in their own process of forgiveness and seeing beauty
In the U.S., industries and cities used to pollute rivers so heavily that at least one – in Ohio – caught fire a dozen times. But half a century ago, a series of landmark federal laws started reining in water pollution. As a result, some rivers across the country are bouncing back to life.

Happy Pride! In this episode, we look at the shame and discrimination that women and people who menstruate encounter for just existing. Reproductive Healthcare Leave: A Workplace Issue. Period. by Kate Everest Menstruation affects half the population, yet the pain, stigma, barriers to healthcare, and workplace discrimination remain largely invisible. Featuring the voices of those living with reproductive health conditions and those advocating for change, this story explores the barriers, stigma, and workplace challenges they face, alongside the growing push for recognition, support, and reproductive healthcare leave in Australia. If the sight of blood gushing from any part of the body is enough to alarm us and a muscle injury is enough to leave one immobilised and requiring days for recovery, why do we expect one who is bleeding, enduring excruciating body pain, wrestling with hormonal chaos and mood swings — all at once — to carry on as if nothing is wrong? Something happens when we get older, it often happens subtly and without warning… one day, without meaning to, we put down the things that once made us feel alive. This happens because we have a lack of time or a shortage of funds, we convince ourselves that other things are more deserving of our attention. Life becomes a series of tasks to complete… work, bills, caretaking, responsibilities… wash, rinse, repeat. Our bodies and souls suffer from a life lived in our minds alone. It's time to rediscover the things that we once loved. We must pull the old passions out of the drawer, dust them off, and remember what it felt like to lose oneself to time and to truly be in flow. As we stroll through the forest, take a moment to reflect on the things you've left behind, it's time to reclaim them! What am I reading?A Midnight Pastry Shop Called Hwawoldang by Lee Onhwahttps://bookshop.org/a/111301/9780063468023The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Bessel Van der Kolkhttps://bookshop.org/a/111301/9780143127741https://bookshop.org/shop/witchywomanwalkingWhat's playing on repeat?LABOUR by Paris Paloma Green Goddess Beans Ingredients:1 tsp olive oil 3 garlic cloves finely chopped or mashed to a paste2 cans of cannellini beans (14 oz cans) drained & rinsed1 bunch kale (12 oz bunch) leaves stripped & finely shredded2 cups vegetable stock 2 sprigs of fresh thyme or 1/2 tsp dried thyme1 sprig of rosemary or 1/2 tsp dried rosemary1⁄2 tsp chilli flakes or to taste1 lemon zest & juicesalt & pepper, to taste1⁄2 cup parmesan cheese3⁄4 cup Greek yogurt (or dairy-free alternative) Sourdough or ciabatta Instructions:Heat oil in a pan over medium-heat and sauté garlic.Add beans and kale and cook for 1-2 minutes to remove any liquid.Transfer half of the bean mixture and half of the stock to a blender and process until smooth.Stir thyme, rosemary, chili flakes and remaining stock through the skillet of beans.Return blended beans back to the skillet, add lemon zest and season with salt and pepper.Stir in most of the cheese and simmer on low heat for 10-15 minutesRemove from heat, mix in lemon juice and adjust seasoning. We dig into practical tools like orienting, grounding, the “starfish” drill, pendulation, and Tracy's “core four” (soft eyes, relaxing the tongue, breath pacing for coherence, and soft knees), plus how posture and unconscious habits can shape mood and behavior. We also explore the value of community and coaching, how movement and sound (including humming, voo breath, and growling) can help regulate, and we finish with a thoughtful discussion on psychedelics, integration, and why support and discernment matter. What if your time problem isn't really a time problem — but a clarity problem in disguise?Dr. Anastasia Chopelas sits down with speaker, coach, and former attorney Michelle Nemeyer, who spent 20 years in a high-performing legal career before an autoimmune diagnosis stopped her in her tracks and sent her looking for real answers. Michelle shares how burnout rarely arrives all at once — more like a lobster slowly being cooked — and how she traced her own recovery back to a handful of overlooked fundamentals: clarity on what lights you up, cutting internal and external time drains, and aligning your goals with what you actually want rather than what you were told you should want. Her framework, the Art of Bending Time, isn't about squeezing more into your day. It's about expanding what's possible within the time you already have. She and Dr. Anastasia also explore how flow state, physical health, and genuine alignment all feed directly into how effectively you can work — and how much you enjoy doing it.If you've been spinning your wheels and wondering why, this conversation offers a grounded, practical place to start.Text CLARITY to 33777 for Michelle's free guided meditation and journaling prompts. Our brain is a bioelectric organ. And the frequency of our thoughts and the extent of our stimulation is as serious as life and death. Living too often in 90 hz, that's a life of addiction. But by using neurohacks and the data from brain EEG we can all learn to chase 10 hz and live a life of flow and peak performance. And nobody has done more to champion, and importantly simplify, this paradigm than my guest today Dr Izzy.Dr. Izzy Justice is a Sports Neuroscientist who has authored 8 books over the course of 30 years on the topic of Emotional Intelligence. He was the first to integrate EQ into sports and athletic performance. He has trained and certified over 300 coaches in EQ in a wide array of sports disciplines worldwide. He has worked with athletes, coaches, and teams in NASCAR, Tennis, Soccer, Golf, Lacrosse, Basketball, Triathlon, NFL, MLB, Olympians, and many collegiate level programs. Dr. Justice's primary work is working in Corporate America with leaders of companies integrating EQ into the workplace. Dr. Mei Rui is a Yale-trained molecular biophysicist, concert pianist, and clinical researcher at MD Anderson Cancer Center, where she runs trials on the measurable effects of music on the human body. In this conversation, we explore what actually happens in the brain the moment music enters it, why the auditory system is the first sense to develop in the womb and the last to go when we die, and how something as accessible as a curated playlist can outperform FDA-approved pharmaceuticals in reducing cortisol. What We Dive Into:1. Music is not a supplement to healing. In the right context, it is the intervention.2. The brain responds differently when you actually show up for the music.3. A longitudinal study in twins showed that three to four years of musical training reduced the risk of Alzheimer's and cognitive decline by 64%, an effect size found in no other single activity.THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS:Oneskin — Code KNOWTHYSELF for 15% off - Limited time only!https://oneskin.co/KNOWTHYSELFBASED Body Works — Code KNOWTHYSELF for 20% and a free toiletry bag!https://www.basedbodyworks.com___________00:00 Introduction: Dr. Mei Rui01:44 A Life Between Music and Science05:26 What Happens When Music Enters the Brain07:26 How the Brain Processes Sound and Music11:32 Why Minor Keys Feel Sad: The Science of Tonality14:37 Live Piano Demo: Matching Music to Mood19:06 Music in the Operating Room27:41 Music as Medicine: Clinical Applications29:10 The 32% Cortisol Study31:19 The 16 Compositional Elements of Healing Music35:11 Oxytocin, Familiarity, and the Parasympathetic Response36:18 Timbre and the Cello's Resemblance to a Mother's Voice42:31 Cymatics: Sound Made Visible45:16 The Ancient Roots of Music as Healing47:09 Listening vs. Playing an Instrument55:33 The Musician's Brain: Structural Differences57:46 Music Training and Protection Against Alzheimer's59:44 Music, Empathy, and Neural Synchrony1:01:36 The EEG Experiment: Reading André's Brain Live1:18:21 What the EEG Data Revealed1:22:26 Music, Flow State, and the Disappearance of Self1:26:55 Music as Spiritual Medicine1:30:23 How to Listen More Intentionally___________MORE FROM MEI✨Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/@meiruipianoMORE FROM KNOW THYSELF
The culture is obsessed with speed, scale, lean teams, massive output, and automation, but faster output does not automatically mean better direction. In part two of this connected conversation, the focus shifts to the missing human layer underneath AI-powered growth and the belief that more content, more automation, and more velocity always lead to better outcomes. Using S³ Growth Streams™ as the operating lens, you will learn how to strategize before accelerating, synergize before scaling, and systemize before sprinting forever. More importantly, you will see how to separate signal from noise, align tools with real human capacity, and build repeatable rhythms that support growth without requiring constant sacrifice. This episode is not anti-AI, anti-hustle, or anti-ambition. It is anti-default sacrifice, anti-permanent sprint, and anti-output without awareness. It also challenges the obsession with flow state by introducing five operating states that support sustainable growth: capture, clarity, commitment, flow, and reflection. Because flow is not the whole game. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is capture the signal, get clarity, commit to the right action, recover, reflect, and return to baseline before sprinting again. The goal is not to become more machine-like. The goal is to become more intentionally human while using machines wisely. Most leaders are quietly using AI tools to get more done, but the real question isn't whether AI can automate tasks. It's whether your team can do the work AI can't: building relationships, pushing the frontier, and creating ideas that didn't exist before. Steven Puri, founder of The Sukha Company and a veteran of motion picture studios, three startups, and $20M in venture funding, brings a refreshingly grounded take on what humans need to protect in the age of LLMs. In this conversation, Dr. Shari Simpson and Steven Puri cover: • Why flow states are the human edge AI can't replicate, and how to build them into your team's schedule • How hiring for culture alignment (not just skills) is the real foundation for unlocking deep work • The difference between productive AI use and the 'foductivity' trap where tools create the illusion of output Timestamps 00:00:15 Steven's background: motion picture studios, $20M venture, three startups 00:02:00 What LLMs actually are and why they're the forcing function for workplace productivity 00:04:33 The jobs AI will replace first and why repetitive task workers should pay attention 00:06:00 The two futures of work: tech trillionaires vs. skilled laborers, and what's missing 00:07:56 Defining flow state: the psychology behind deep work and why it takes 20-23 minutes to enter 00:09:30 The river metaphor: how Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi defined flow and why it stuck 00:11:18 The interruption cost: why a single distraction sets you back 20+ minutes 00:13:16 Flow state conditions: why 'exploring Claude' doesn't count and what does 00:17:27 When a flow state app doesn't help: the meeting-heavy leader problem 00:21:00 The hiring argument: why culture alignment is the prerequisite for deep work on your team Guest: Steven Puri is the founder of The Sukha Company, a platform designed to help knowledge workers achieve flow states and do their best work. Steven has been a senior executive at multiple motion picture studios, raised over $20 million in venture capital, and built three startups, including one successful exit. Most people think tracking your brain is science fiction. The truth is, the technology to measure your brainwaves, train your focus, and deepen your deep sleep already fits inside a sleek little headband and the woman who built it has been studying neuroplasticity since long before consumer neurotech existed. In this episode, I sit down with Ariel Garten, neuroscientist, psychotherapist, and co-founder of Muse, the brain-sensing wearable backed by the world's largest consumer EEG data set. We break down what brainwaves actually are, why your individual alpha peak frequency is one of the most underrated markers of cognitive aging, and how just five minutes of focused attention meditation per day can make your brain look 7.5 years younger. Ariel walks me through sleep spindles as the single greatest predictor of brain age, how the glymphatic system clears amyloid beta during deep sleep, and why hemispheric specialization shows up so differently in male and female anxiety. We also get into Muse's foundation brain model, novel biomarkers for Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, the digital sleeping pill, and her mission to make sure no one is jailed by the prison of their own mind.
