Seeing as it's now autumn, a number of bulbs can be planted in the garden. Here's a few of them: Tulip A fabulous early spring colour. There's some historical stuff with the Dutch making heaps of money out of often virus-ridden “varieties” (early 1600-s AD) selling them for Fl 3000.00 per bulb (while the average yearly wage of a skilled craftsman was around Fl 300.00) – the bulb bubble burst in 1637 AD. These days they are a bit cheaper and more reliable. They grow well in South Island with very cool winters – up north they need winter chilling (taking out of the soil and put in fridge for 8 weeks). In mild climates it pays to plant later in the year, in May or June. But in South Island, planting the bulbs can start in a few weeks; order them now! Great bulb outlets: Bulbs direct Garden Post NZBulbs Fiesta Bulbs Hadstock Farm in Springston Work the soil to 20 cm deep in sunny to semi-shade positions(bulbs prefer well-drained soils). Plant 15 cm spaced and 15 cm deep – in warmer climates, plant them a bit deeper (20 cm deep). A bit of mulch over the planting site will keep weeds down. Bulb fertiliser is recommended and after flowering, some blood and bone will feed the green leaves. Do NOT cut those green leaves after flowering: they gather sunlight (photosynthesis) for re-stocking the food reserves inside the bulbs underground. Narcissus Daffodils Prep the soil to 40 cm or so – daffodils' roots go way down! Plant them 10 cm deep and spaced to 10 cm apart. Well-drained soils work best – perhaps under deciduous trees. Hagley Park is a great example. Planting them in full sun is okay too. Mass planting works well, and the bulbs will come up year after year. They are not as fussy as tulips in terms of cool winter soils. Apart from the far north, the whole of New Zealand is daffodil country. Bulbs will multiply. Crocus: the lovely smelling spring flowers Plant the corms in autumn a couple of centimetres deep and closely-spaced for best effect – they are best lifted after the foliage dies down. Of course, Saffron is a crocus, but it flowers in Autumn (March). Leucojum, also known as snowflake It has a special place in my heart: we used to have a rare and endangered native species in the wetlands where I used to roam as a nature nerd in the Netherlands. Many different varieties now – flowering in early spring, planting in early April. Bulbs in containers Most of these bulbs do well in containers. Picture a terracotta pot with these plants massed together – you can shift them inside when they flower to enjoy, or put them on the patio so you see them through the ranch-slider. Dana also breaks down simple ways to check for zinc deficiency, including an easy at-home taste test, and shares the best food sources and supplements to restore zinc balance. There are times when the calendar decides it wants to be your friend — like your birthday falling on a Saturday or St. Patrick's Day coinciding with the first day of the NCAA men's basketball tournament (that one really only applies to bar owners and Notre Dame fans).Today, the calendar has smiled on your humble This Bites hosts, because our regularly scheduled episode release day just so happens to be Pi Day. And we get a layup of a lead item. While acknowledging that math is important, we can all agree that the superior homonym for this particular date is Pie Day. Ah, pie. It's a versatile concoction that covers pretty much every phase of the dining experience, from appetizer to dessert. Obviously, the latter is its idealized form, and we start the podcast by giving you a few of our favorite places in Milwaukee to pick one up.We don't want to steal Ann's thunder since she put some real sweat equity into her full list at Milwaukee Magazine, so let's just do the top three here:Honeypie — Home of some of the more inventive varieties you'll find in the area, past examples of which include whiskey walnut pecan and bourbon fudge. The Bake Sale — A pie gathering place, if you will, featuring baked goods made in-house and others from local vendors.Elegant Farmer — You'll have to haul yourself to Mukwonago for this one, but their apple pie baked in a paper bag is reportedly worth the drive. That should get you started, but feel free to bounce over to Milwaukee Magazine for the other half of the list and lots of helpful info from Ann. The magazine is also where we start our weekly roundup, although it's a print-only situation, so make sure you track down a copy of the March 2025 issue:And this is one you'll want to get your hands on, because it runs you through the very top restaurants in the area.On the magazine website, Ann collected her latest dining tidbits, from gluten-free goodies to a quietly great Thai spot. The former Al Bazzar on the South Side is now Al Wadi Coffee House. With its third anniversary coming up this June, Saffron refreshed its tastes of India on a brand-new menu.

From being a fringe political party in 2013 to sweeping nearly half of the state s forty-two Lok Sabha seats in 2019, the BJP has gained ground in West Bengal, aided partly by the RSS s exponential growth during Mamata Banerjee's chief ministerial tenure (2011 onwards). With a consistent and concerted criticism of the TMC, the saffron camp managed to create a strong wave of anti-incumbency. So much so that the BJP s prospects of forming the next government in Bengal in 2021 seemed to have brightened considerably, while the Left, which had ruled Bengal for over three decades, appears to have been reduced to a fringe political entity. However, the controversy over the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens, combined with Banerjee s course-correction drive, designed by strategist Prashant Kishor, indicate that she might yet script a turnaround, with Bengal turning into the laboratory of a unique political experiment.  Mission Bengal: A Saffron Experiment (HarperCollins India, 2020) documents the BJP s extraordinary rise in the state and attempts to look at these developments in the historical context of Bengal from the rise of Hindu nationalism and Muslim separatism in the nineteenth century, the Partition and its fallout, the impact of developments in Bangladesh, the influence of leftist ideals on the psyche of the Bengali people, to the demographic changes in the state over the past few decades. Particularly what caffeine and energy drinks are missing is they're just giving you energy, but you have no ability to use it properly. They keep you awake but you're miserable." - Jeff Boyd Why Multitasking Is a Myth "Multitasking is a term that was made for computers. Humans cannot multitask. We can shift from one task to another in a nanosecond so it seems like we can multitask, but we are hardwired. We can only do one thing at a time." - Jeff Boyd Paraxanthine Gives You More Than Energy "Paraxanthine gives you smooth energy. It's increasing short-term memory, cognition under physical stress, and the ability to pay attention. That's more than energy. That's being able to have energy to then go deploy it, use it, and be your best self. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 8, 2025 is: gelid • JELL-id • adjective Something described as gelid, such as the weather or a person's demeanor, is literally or figuratively extremely cold or icy. // She decided to move down south after experiencing Chicago's gelid winters throughout college. See the entry > Examples: “[Delish.com's assistant food editor, Taylor Ann] Spencer notes Oregon-based ice creamery Salt & Straw for ‘combos like Pistachio with Saffron, and Hibiscus and Coconut.' Other offerings there sound like a warm hug in gelid form: Jasmine Milk Tea laced with chocolate-coated almond slivers, or Rhubarb Crumble with Toasted Anise.” — Kim Cook, The Chicago Sun-Times, 30 June 2023 Did you know? Alright stop, collaborate and listen: the history of gelid is all about ice, ice, baby. Gelid entered English late in the 16th century from the Latin adjective gelidus, which ultimately comes from the noun gelu, meaning “frost” or “cold.” (The noun gelatin, which can refer to an edible jelly that undergoes a cooling process as part of its formation, comes from the related Latin word, gelare, meaning “to freeze.”) Gelid is used to describe anything of extremely cold temperature (as in “the gelid waters of the Arctic Ocean”), but the word can also be used figuratively to describe a person with a cold demeanor (as in “the prizefighter's gelid stare”).

He discusses his journey into the world of plant extraction, how he first discovered compounds like Haoma and Harmaline, and why he decided to bring Iranian tradition to the psychedelic renaissance. He explores the similarities between psychedelics and experiences found in mystical traditions, and how that historical context can inform modern psychedelic practice. He sees this exemplified most with dream recollection, attending to the emotions found within dreams, and the concept of wakeful dreaming, where one can access unconscious insights consciously, through the liminal (or hypnagogic) state between dreaming and wakefulness.  He discusses: Zoroastrianism and how the teachings of Zarathustra on understanding morality have inspired hi Syrian Rue in Iranian culture, and how it compares to the Banisteriopsis Caapi vine: Is it actually stronger than ayahuasca Henry Corbin's practice of embodied imagination and Jung's concept of active imaginatio Other less-discussed compounds he's interested in, like Ephedra and Saffron and more! There are four orders in the āśrama: there's brahmachari, grihastha, vanaprastha, and sannyasa. Each one of these is very specifically to give facility at different eras, periods in one's life so that one can give one's full attention to Kṛṣṇa and Kṛṣṇa's service. As Kṛṣṇa says in the Bhagavad-gītā (BG 2.41): "vyavasāyātmikā buddhir ekeha kuru-nandana bahu-śākhā hy anantāś ca buddhayo 'vyavasāyinām." The idea Kṛṣṇa gives here is that unless you're fully dedicated to Kṛṣṇa consciousness and keep your mind fixed in one place on Kṛṣṇa and his service, then many branch. Varieties, apparently although sort of false varieties, everything's recycled in the material world. So this brahmachari āśrama is a special facility to give you full attention on your service and also to inspire others who see you and note that this is your only interest in life. You have no other business going on; you only have Kṛṣṇa's business in your life. Hindu Nationalism in South India: The Rise of Saffron in Kerala (Routledge, 2024) engages with a range of factors that shapes the trajectory of Hindu nationalism in Kerala, the southern state of India. Until recently, Kerala was considered a socio-political exception which had no room for Hindu nationalism. This book questions such Panglossian prognosis and shows the need to map the ideological and political growth of Hindu nationalism which has been downplayed in the academic discourse as temporary aberrations. The introduction to the book places Kerala in the context of South India. Arguing that Hindutva is a real force which needs to be contended within theoretical and empirical terms, the chapters in this book examine Hindu nationalism in Kerala in relation to themes such as history, caste, culture, post-truth, ideology, gender, politics, and the Indian national space. Considering the rise of Hindu nationalism in the recent years, this pioneering book will be of interest to a students and academics studying Politics, in particular Nationalism, Asian Politics and Religion and Politics and South Asian Studies. Professor Mannathukkaren's main research interests are focused on left/communist movements, development and democracy, modernity, the politics of popular culture (esp., the politics of mass cultural forms like the media, cinema and sport), and Marxist and postcolonial theories. The thrust of his research has been to develop a theoretical and empirical critique of postcolonial theory and postmodern thought. At the same time, he has argued for a dialogue with postmodern-inspired frameworks of knowledge and to creatively integrate them to overcome the serious deficiencies of many modernist understandings of human social reality (which have translated into arrogant and teleological assumptions). She is the podcast co-host of Coffee Chat with Amber & Lisa (on all podcast platforms) as well as the author of the award winning book Leading Ladies: Discover Your God-Grown Strategy for Success and the companion Leading Ladies: Discovery and Next Steps Creative Journal with Lisa Burris Burns. They join over 30 women of diverse backgrounds, ages, and walks of life to redefine what leadership looks like in God's marketplace. Find out more at www.LeadingLadies.Life. Amber has two grown daughters, Saffron, Imogen, and one teen Penelope, with Philip, her British hubby of almost 30 years, two Great Pyrenees pups—Stanley and Stuart, and a zoo of exotic pets. We look at her childhood up to the present to find the beautiful thread of Jesus in her life. You won't want to miss this inspiring episode!*Theme music “Blessed Time” by Ketsa
