Foreigner was part of the official selection at this years Fantasia Festival in Montreal. It was written and directed by Ava Maria Safai and we sat down together over zoom and discussed her film. Foreigner - In the age of low-rise jeans and flip phones, a Persian teen trying to fit in with her new Canadian clique dyes her hair blonde -- and invites a monstrous force into her life.I will be sure to keep everyone posted for its release sometime next year, but until then, enjoy this great episode. Ava was a lot of fun to talk to and we discuss tv and other films as well.Persian Julep – Apricot Rose JulepIngredients1/2 oz honey rose simple syrup**6 large mint leaves2 dashes rose water optional1.5 oz bourbon1/2 oz Giffard's apricot liqueurGarnish: sprig of mint, dried apricots, fresh, organic, food-safe rose petalsInstructionsAdd the simple syrup and rose water to the bottom of a mixing glass. Tear the mint leaves in half and drop them into the syrup. Muddle lightly.Add the apricot liqueur and bourbon. Fill with ice and stir until chilled and well-combined, about 30 seconds.Strain into a julep cup filled with cracked or crushed ice and garnish with a fresh mint sprig and some dried apricots. For the Rose-Honey Simple:Ingredients2 tablespoons dried rose buds1 cup water3/4 cup honeyDirectionsBrew the rose buds in boiling water for 8 minutes like you would a tea (I used my teapot).Strain 1/2 cup of the tea into a glass measuring cup. While still hot, add 3/4 cup honey and stir well to combine.Let cool completely and keep in the fridge. It will keep for a couple of weeks, and a little longer if you add a bit of vodka to it before storing it. You can drink the remaining tea on its own, or make some of it into a rose simple syrup by adding 1/2 cup sugar to it.Persian DelightIngredients60 ml Tanqueray Malacca Gin40 ml Salted Pistachio and Cardamom Orgeat*30 ml Acid-adjusted Orange Juice**10-15 drops Persian Saffron and Persian Rose tincture***2 dashes Angostura orange bitterDirectionsMix all the ingredients (except for the Saffron and Persian Rose Tincture) together and add them to 50 ml 2% milk, let it sit for 24 hours and filter it using cheese cloth. Weigh the final liquid and dilute it with 30% water.Pour drink into a glass and add 10-15 drops of Saffron and Persian Rose Tincture.Garnish with a rose petal, barberry, and/or edible gold leaf. This drink can be scaled up to make many servings at the same time. Just multiply this recipe by as many guests as you are hosting. The time spent resting in milk doesn't change based on volume.*Salted Pistachio and Cardamom Orgeat: Add 100 salted pistachios and 3 cardamom pods to 250 ml hot water in a sealed container and let it sit for 24 hours. Using blender blend it well and run it through cheese cloth. Squeeze the cheese cloth to maximize yield. Weigh the final liquid and add equal amount of sugar. Stir to dissolve the sugar.**Acid-adjusted Orange Juice: Add 4g citric acid to every 96g orange juice.***Persian Saffron and Persian Rose Tincture: Combine 100ml of Tanqueray Malacca Gin with two pinches of saffron and one pinch of dehydrated rose petal. (We are saying a pinch because the weight was less than .1g so be sparing with this)I did end up finding another recipe but it is from AI, if you would like to try that one, just DM me and I will send it.Foreigner Drinking GameTake a shot when…She watches her show.Take a sip when…every time the three girls pop up.a white person asks a weird question.Take two shots when…there is lice under her skin.Finish your drink when…she becomes a demon. As always, drink responsibly and with others. Mike Strickland has made a career out of writing everything from marketing copy and finance articles to technical documentation and mobile app messages—and even twenty thousand science fiction-themed trivia questions. Other jobs he's been paid to do include scuba diver, navigator, call center representative, user experience designer, and now, science fiction author. His love of words began with fantasy and sci-fi, where it has now brought him full circle. After a long hiatus from fiction, Mike started writing and publishing again in 2024. A year later, he earned a master's degree in creative writing and won the prestigious Writers of the Future Contest. The story idea for “As Long as You Both Shall Live” was born from a dream two days before the Writers of the Future contest deadline. Mike wrote most of the story on the day of the deadline itself—his most prolific day of writing yet. The inspiration that powered such output focused on this question: “If technology allowed a person's consciousness to be transferred to a virtual environment, disconnected from their physical body, what would happen if that person's body died while their consciousness was in that state?” Mike explores the ethical questions inherent in this premise through the context of a hopeful love story—as all the best stories are told. Kathleen Powell received 18 awards from Writers of the Future before claiming her place in the 2026 anthology—two of them finalist stories. Since winning Writers of the Future, she placed third in the 2025 Baen Fantasy Adventure Award contest. When not writing about changelings or happily reading folklore and fantasy from across the world, she is usually thinking about writing changelings or reading folklore (she also likes tea). The inspiration for her winning story, “Saffron and Marigolds,” came after reading “Circulate” by L. Ron Hubbard in Writers of the Future Volume 39. In that essay, Hubbard writes “And in despair, we wail that there is nothing of interest in our surroundings or in the lives we lead. We say that and we believe it…If we knew our surroundings well enough, we could put them on paper. Someone else comes around, looks us over and studies our environment for a brief period and then goes off to write a novel. Why, we moan, didn't we write that book?” Well, why not? After writing about New York and London and Iowa (they have a tulip festival!), she decided to give writing about a place she knew firsthand a shot. After all, why should faeries and dragons and grand adventures always exist only somewhere “far, far away?” So “Saffron and Marigolds” is based in the little city where she attended college, and features good friends, high stakes, and cheese, because those, after all, are the essentials in any magic story. She hopes the locals will enjoy recognizing a few familiar details, and that readers everywhere will remember impossible adventures aren't always so far away as we might think. The Contest, one of the most prestigious writing and illustrating competitions in the world, is currently in its 42nd year and is judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction. The Writers of the Future Contest judges include, Tim Powers (author of On Stranger Tides), Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert (Dune prequel series), Robert J. Sawyer (The Oppenheimer Alternative), Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn series, The Stormlight Archive), Larry Niven (Ringworld), Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game), Nnedi Okorafor (Who Fears Death), Hugh Howey (Wool), and Katherine Kurtz (Deryni series) to name a few.

The Dark Ages: Rome has fallen, the Church won't shut the fuck up, there's a killer plague for every season, and everyone else is dying of BOREDOM.Right? WRONG.Western Europe may have been a shitshow for much of what we ridiculously call the "Dark Ages," but the rest of the world had its act together.Specifically: Baghdad around the 800s AD. At the height of the Golden Age of Islam. They had libraries, they had mathematics, and...they had lesbian sex scientists. This week we're taking a tantalizing dip into the Golden Age of Islam to uncover a treasure trove archive of lesbionic women from medieval Arabia.Muslim philosophers and physicians had actual words for lesbians (or lesbian-like women), entire books about famous lesbian couples, and specific manuals that explained how to vigorously rub one out with your beloved. From labia gas to celery-and-rocket shakes, the science was...shaky, at best. But the spirit of inquiry was strong, and the genuine respect for lesbian love profound.Tune in to explore:Why doctors thought the only sensible treatment for lesbianism was – get this! – lesbian sexA 13th-century Kama Sutra-style manual that coined the “saffron massage” (and came with a guide to lesbian sound effects)The interfaith power couple Hind Bint al-Nu'man and al-Zarqāʾ, whose legendary love story inspired queer and heterosexual writers for centuries to comeThe lost books of lesbian couples with names like Basil and Clove and Justice and Happiness (welcome, ladies, to the queer Muslim SPICE RACK)How medieval lesbian communities were rumoured to hold meetings and sex ed classes, because like all good homosexuals, they got organized.

Grandpa Bill's Brain Fuel: The Top Supplements Dr. Amen Recommends for a Healthier MindGrandpa Bill here. For the past few days, we've been on a mission to improve our brain health. We've talked about a great workout for the mind, but today, we're going to dive into what to feed it. Dr. Daniel Amen, a man who has looked at more brain scans than almost anyone, teaches us that you can't have a healthy mind without the right fuel. So, let's talk about his top supplement suggestions—the brain-boosting heroes you might want to add to your daily routine.Remember, always talk to your doctor before starting any new supplement. They're your co-pilot on this journey. If you think of your brain as a house, Omega-3s (like DHA and EPA) are the high-quality lumber. They are a core component of your brain cell membranes. Dr. Amen considers them foundational for memory, mood, and overall brain structure. This trio of B vitamins works together to create energy in the brain. They also help clear away a substance that can be harmful to our blood vessels, keeping the pathways clear for good blood flow. Think of them as the team that keeps the lights on in your mind, ensuring your brain has the juice to function optimally.Choline is a key nutrient your body uses to create a messenger for memory called acetylcholine. Having enough choline is like having a reliable mail carrier—it helps ensure that your memory messages get delivered quickly and accurately. You might think these are just for your stomach, but your gut is often called your "second brain." The healthy bacteria in your gut send signals to your mind that can help manage stress and anxiety. A happy gut often means a happier brain!Dr. Amen points to mushrooms like Cordyceps and Reishi. These are known as "adaptogens," meaning they help your body and brain handle stress more effectively. They don't create a buzz; they train your brain to be more resilient, like a personal trainer building strength. These are powerful compounds that fight inflammation throughout your body, including your brain. Inflammation can harm brain cells over time, so Curcumin and Quercetin act like a cleanup crew, reducing swelling and protecting your mind from damage. This one is crucial for everyone! Vitamin D is vital for mood and overall brain health. Studies show that a lack of Vitamin D is common and can be tied to feelings of sadness. Getting enough of this "sunshine vitamin" can make a world of difference.Rounding out the list, Saffron is a great mood booster, while Ginkgo Biloba helps promote healthy blood flow to the brain. So, there you have it, folks. By giving your brain the right fuel, you're not just taking supplements; you're building a healthier, happier you from the inside out.Keep that body and mind moving!1. In this raw and powerful episode of Nightmare Success In and Out, host Brent Cassity interviews Saffron Gustafson, who shares her harrowing journey from a successful business owner of medical clinics to facing federal charges after an FBI raid on her medical business. Eventually she is sentenced to 22 months in prison at the Dublin prison that was eventually shutdown for sexual abuse of women. Saffron Gustafson's story is one of resilience, survival, and reclaiming her voice after years of silence. As the author of My Name Is Saffron: Voices Silenced, Stifled, and Taken Away, she opens up about the struggles that shaped her journey, the systems and circumstances that tried to erase her identity, and the strength it took to fight back. Abe Saffron rose from wartime wheeler-dealing to become the king of Sydney's underworld, a man whose appetite for sex, money and scandal was unmatched by any other Aussie gangster in the swinging Sixties. Saffron paid everybody off, brought Sinatra to Sydney, and hosted Sinatra. He was, in the words of one reporter, “Mr Sin”. But as Saffron's empire of vice grew, so did the list of those desperate to bring him down — including his own henchmen. And as the Seventies dawned, Saffron would be embroiled in two fatal scandals that stained his reputation forever: one a tragic fairground fire, the other a kidnapping and murder that shocked the nation. For comparison, a spice like cumin, gets you hundreds of kilos per acre whereas saffron yields barely two.Despite getting a prestigious GI tag from the Indian government and even a National Mission dedicated to its revival, Kashmir's saffron production has plummeted:from 8 tonnes in 2011 to just 2.7 tonnes in 2024. This week we're focusing on Suzy's recent Sniffari in Brighton, this time focusing on her visit to @soliflore_store, owned and run by Sarah. We will also be revealing our favourite of the new @the_rac_on_teur fragrances we've been exploring the last few weeks, and you can vote for your fave in the poll on our Instagram page, @onthescentpodcast. In this episode we also mention the wonderful kit Nicola's put together for those who share her anxiety about flying. Find out more about Zen in the Sky kits @outspokenbeautynicola. But now, let's flit to the fragrant trip to Brighton, and find out which scents Suzy fell for…Soliflore is one of those beautifully curated, cosy shops where walking through the door feels like coming home. Sarah's eye for design and detail is exquisite, with a large central table featuring an ever-evolving showcase of scents, and instead of blotters, there are silken handkerchiefs (stored in vintage tins) sprayed with each fragrance. Featuring a curated selection honed to what Sarah knows her customers are looking for, including beloved brands and some exclusives & indie houses Suzy had never heard of before, it's a place you could happily while away several hours sniffing your way around. And there are gorgeous cards, soaps, chocolates and great gift-y items to tempt every taste! In the short amount of time Suzy had, here are three fragrances she found at Soliflore and immediately fell for…@reserve_en_afrique Aube Lumineuse“The sun rises, flooding the great expanses of the sweeping plains, gracing the wilderness with its wash of pure light. The dawn's intense rays awaken these spectacular lands. Great herds rove majestically in the distance. Bright blue birds perch in the flat-topped acacia trees while giraffes stroll with leisurely grace. The sky is clear. The air is fresh. The fragrance opens with a luminous fresh burst of citrusy notes of Tangerine (South Africa) and Blood Orange (South Africa). A bright heart of fresh Orange Flower (Morocco) and zesty Ginger (Nigeria) is supported by woody base of Cedarwood Atlas (Morocco).”@saintritaparlor Signature Fragrance “Finest quality parfum. Limited unisex fragrance comprised of over 18 rare and organic essential oils. Handmade by Saint Rita Parlor in Los Angeles, California.Rita would tend to her rose garden whilst smoking a hand-rolled tobacco cigarette and drinking a whiskey and water.Notes: Whiskey, Tobacco, and Rose”@arquiste Almond Suede“By Calice Becker. Top notes are Bitter Almond, Honeycomb, Bergamot and Pink Pepper; middle notes are Concrete, Saffron, Neroli, Orange Blossom and Labdanum; base notes are Suede, Pine tar, Sugar and Vanilla Absolute. Almond Suede by Arquiste is a unisex gourmand leather fragrance inspired by Medieval Andalusia and its refined gourmand culture. It balances almond marzipan and suede leather, capturing the essence of the city of Córdoba and almond sweets.”Next week we'll be catching up with Part 2 of Suzy's Brighton Sniffari, and finding out what she went mad for @wild_iris_perfumery!#ad Meanwhile, we promised to pick just *one* favourite each of the fragrances we've loved exploring in our Raconteur Discovery Set II boxes, featuring the new ‘Australiscious' collection, and after MUCH prevarication, Suzy chose *Daintree Rain Tea* and Nicola chose *Killr Vanillr*! Don't forget to try code onthescent10 @bloomperfumery for 10 percent off discovery sets and full sizes (not sure how long code will still be active, as sets sold out a couple of times, but worth trying when checking out!)

In this eye-opening episode of The Soaring Child Podcast, host Dana Kay explores the connection between B vitamins and ADHD in children. From emotional outbursts and brain fog to poor sleep and focus issues, Dana shares why certain B vitamins—especially B6, B9 (folate), and B12—may be at the root of lingering challenges, even when parents have cleaned up their child's diet and added supplements. She breaks down how genetics like the MTHFR, SHMT1, and FUT2 mutations can affect how kids process these nutrients and why getting the “wrong” form of a vitamin might be making things worse instead of better. With clear explanations and actionable tips, Dana outlines how to use food, testing, and smart supplementation to support methylation, neurotransmitter production, detox, and more. Whether you're totally new to B vitamins or you've already tried some without results, this episode delivers the must-know science behind one of the most overlooked pieces of the ADHD puzzle. If you're ready to go beyond generic advice and support your child based on their unique needs, this episode is a must-listen. Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTHErica is busy working on her first novel with her name on it and it's harder than she thought it would be now that its her name on the cover. Nico and her have been dating for 5 months and he proposes! She says yes! And Anna surprises Erica by being there for it! But she can't stay long because she's off to Spain to eat some food and review it for her blog which has really taken off. She finds out about this spice, Saffron. She tries to find out what it is but it's a secret. She meets a man named Javier whose family runs the saffron farm and he refuses her request for an interview. His family isn't in it for the fame and the hype, and their methods are a well-kept secret. Despite that, he and Anna hit it off when they end up sitting together at a restaurant. After dinner, she's like I could talk to you all night and he's like well why don't we? They get ice cream, he holds her hand, and he says he wishes he could grant access for an interview but his family is kinda mad at him right now but won't say why. She's like I don't want to talk about that right now. Instead, they jus KISS! IT's like before the first commercial break. I don't really know what to do with that info. The next day, she gets a call from her agent and she tells her that there's this big magazine that is potentially interested in hiring her for their international food reviews. All she has to do is write about something that no one has ever written about before and submit it. No big deal. She decides she's gonna go to Portugal to find something but her car battery dies. Anna's car breaks down right outside Javier's village the next day, and he offers her a bed to sleep in until the car can be charged. Typically, you wouldn't think that to be a big deal, but when her family discovers that there is a random women in the family guest room. Things go nuts! Javier explains that the day he met Anna, he was supposed to be meeting with a matchmaker who was going to set him up with a wife because he's not allowed to inherit his family farm until he's married. Standard.Javier only has until the next harvest to get married, or else he loses his claim to the farm. There's a lot of rules here. So, naturally they assume that she is his fiancée. So they make an agreement - she'll stay and live there through the harvest pretending to be his fiancée, if he'll let her write an article about his family farm for her website.Erica ends up showing up still thinking Anna's broken-down car needs help, and she's pulled into the ruse too.Anna starts to really enjoy living with Javier's family though – she has no family of her own back home – and starts to wish it was all real. And Erica starts to be inspired as well by Javier's family and is using them as inspiration for her book. Ultimately, everything comes out and it's a whole thing and Erica and Anna end up getting in a fight. They end up making up and we see Erica get married. And Anna and Javier make ip and the family gives her the ok to publish the story and they decide to give the relationship a real start and they kiss.

C. diff is like a bully in the gut—pushing around the good bacteria and creating chaos. Many of these symptoms are misdiagnosed as behavioral or emotional problems—but the real issue is sometimes biological. This exact scenario has been observed on Organic Acids Tests. Dopamine xcess can be linked to hyperactivity, agitation, or even psychotic-like behavior. No amount of parenting strategies or therapy will work until we address what's happening in the gut. The OAT test gives us a window into gut bacteria, neurotransmitter imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, and more. This test is a simple urine test you can do from home. Most pediatricians are not looking at the gut when it comes to ADHD symptoms. You are not imagining things. Their body may be sending out very real distress signals. Dana Kay Resources:

In this episode of The Soaring Child, host Dana Kay dives into a topic that's sure to challenge the status quo—popular ADHD multivitamins. With eye-catching labels and lofty promises, these supplements flood our social media feeds and store shelves. But are they really helping our kids? Dana reveals why most of these well-marketed products are nothing more than expensive band-aids—and what to focus on instead. Dana Kay is an ADHD health practitioner, author, and parent who knows firsthand what it's like to navigate the overwhelming world of ADHD solutions. Through her journey with her own son, Dana has discovered the power of root-cause healing and targeted support. In this episode, she unpacks why testing—not guessing—is the key to identifying what your child truly needs to thrive, and how functional lab testing, dietary changes, and gut healing are essential steps on that path. It's like trying to pour water into a clogged funnel. You wouldn't try to fix your car without popping the hood first. Many of these brands include synthetic forms of vitamins that are poorly absorbed. You can't supplement your way out of a poor diet or a body riddled with inflammation. We test, we don't guess. There's a big difference between supplementing randomly and supplementing for targeted issues. More isn't always better—you need the right ones. Popular multivitamins are like throwing handfuls of seeds into the soil—without checking if the soil is dry. That's when your child starts thriving—not just surviving. Dana Kay Resources:

"In just one week, people taking Rhodiola felt less stressed, more focused, and mentally sharper." "Rhodiola was compared to the antidepressant sertraline, also known as Zoloft. While sertraline had stronger effects, Rhodiola had fewer side effects and was better tolerated." "Research shows Rhodiola may enhance memory and learning by helping neurons in the brain communicate better." "OPCs are antioxidants found in blueberries, grapes, and dark chocolate, and they help protect the brain while strengthening the blood-brain barrier." "One study found that drinking blueberry juice, which is rich in OPC flavanols, for 12 weeks improved working memory, blood flow to the brain, and cognitive performance in adults." "Ginkgo and ginseng act like stimulants without the side effects, and studies show they may help improve attention and dopamine levels in kids with ADHD." "Herbs are powerful, even though they're natural. They can interact with medications, so always consult a professional." "There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Functional lab testing can help determine which nutrients and herbs your child actually needs." Dana Kay Resources:
