She's a mogul, a model and best of all she's a mom. If you get that reference from Kimora: Life in The Fab Lane, then we can be best friends because that show was, and is, everything to me. Kimora, whether she likes it or not, is made for reality TV. And as a Housewives fanatic, I had to beg her one last time to see if there is any chance she would ever agree to be on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills… and on this episode, we'll finally get an answer. We talked about female friendships and romantic relationships, and Kimora gives us alllllll the lessons that she, as she put it, had to learn “the hard way”. We discussed the concept of emasculating a partner, shrinking behind the power and control of someone you love, knowing when enough is enough, and how to maintain your independence by any and all means necessary. As most of us know, Kimora gives it to you straight, no chaser - and she brought that same iconically blunt energy into our conversation. In this episode she gives us the pump-up pep talk of our dreams, and explains how she took her childhood growing up with a single mom, where she felt inherently “different”, and spun it into becoming the strong, unshakable force of nature we see when we look at Kimora today. BlackFacts.com presents the black fact of the day for May 4.Kimora Lee Simmons was born. She is an American entrepreneur, fashion designer, TV personality, author, philanthropist and model.Kimora was born of African American and Japanese heritage. She attended public school, but when she grew to 5-foot, 8-inches by the time she was ten years old, she became the easy target of schoolyard taunts and teasing.Hoping to boost her confidence, Simmons's mother enrolled her daughter in a modeling class when she was eleven years old. Two years later, at the age of thirteen, Simmons was awarded an exclusive modeling contract with Chanel. In 1998, Simmons' then husband, music mogul and entrepreneur, Russell Simmons, was at the helm of "Phat Farm", an urban menswear brand. Simmons created a parallel women's brand, "Baby Phat by Kimora Lee Simmons", under the umbrella of "Phat Fashions".She has also been featured in rap music videos and had her own reality show called “Kimora: Life in the Fab Lane”. She established the Kimora Lee Simmons Scholarship Fund at her high school alma mater in St. Louis to provide college tuition support for academically successful girls with financial needs.Learn black history, teach black history at blackfacts.com
Kimora Lee Simmons is a model, a mogul, but most of all, she's a mom. In 1999, Kimora launched her first clothing line, Baby Phat, which would become one of the first explosive streetwear brands that specifically catered to women, and even more so, women of color. Kimora created size-inclusive denim styles and looks that complemented a wide range of women with diverse body types. As a result, the Baby Phat brand became a fashion sensation, popping up in magazines, runways, and top celebrities across the globe. In the early 2000s, Kimora launched an intimate docuseries called “Life in the Fab Lane,” where she gave the audience an inside look into her life as a working mom and a glimpse behind the scenes into her fashion empire. In 2006, Kimora captured our hearts with her book Fabulosity, which empowered countless women to pursue self-love, confidence, and success. She would later build a high-end luxury brand, KLS, and would become the Creative Director of JustFab. Her list of accolades and accomplishments is endless. Now, with her brilliant daughters Aoki and Ming by her side, Kimora launched Baby Phat Beauty and recently revived and expanded her clothing brand, Baby Phat by Kimora Lee Simmons. Host, Kirsten Holtz Naim sat down with Kimora to talk about her illustrious career, the revival of Baby Phat by Kimora Lee Simmons, and her dedication to empowering women. Enjoy the episode? Hello Fellow Junkies, we're excited to celebrate our first year of hosting this podcast. Like we said, this was a long time coming, from joking around about doing this podcast to actually coming together and doing it. Now a year later, we're still going at and getting more comfortable as well. We're doing our best in bringing you great things that you might have missed in the media and some different point perspective. This episode we discuss Louis Vuitton's Menswear division pulling anything and everything relating to Michael Jackson in the midst of the HBO documentary scandal. Which is interesting because their LV F/W19 collection was in many ways an homage to the late entertainer. We move to Fashion and the disable and their lack of apparel targetted to them. We discuss the fashion part of the latest College Entrance scandal in US history and the effects it has on fashion. We close with a lengthy conversation about the relaunch of the Baby Phat brand.Fashion Junkies!!Listen HereSubscribe through iTunes

100% vinyl set with a literal theme - grace and elegance. Not much more to be said about the late Arthur Ashe. I can't recall if I got to shake his hand when he came to Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism in 1993 to lecture but I was there soaking in the wisdom. This party was actually for the launch of footwear produced by Run from Run-DMC. Mr. Ashe's wife Jean was in attendance and this set pretty much was for her. A nice listen for burgeoning DJs who care to hear how records made by musicians are mixed. Mixing drum machine records is less difficult. Thanks to the Simmons family and my bud L'Mani because this set was spun on his turntables that evening. http://www.arthurashe.org/site/ http://www.denverpost.com/spears/ci_6293422 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIB5VH3h6vA&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4vlFQA-t9w&feature=PlayList&p=ECC5BA59FE7CBE9A&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=29
