Building a sophisticated AI that can evolve to fit our vast and diverse needs is a Herculean challenge. Today we speak with senior engineer Eric Steen about Automata, his experimental Elixir project that uses neuroevolution and cutting edge theory to create a multi-agent behavior tree — or really good AI in the common tongue. But before we tap into that rich topic, we talk with Eric about tech burnout, his background, and why Elixir is an excellent language for writing modern software. He then unpacks AI concepts like the need to develop backpropagation in your system, and the value of “neural diversity,” and Markov decision processes. After Eric gives his take on architecture versus design and the place of domain-driven design, we discuss Automata. A key breakthrough, Eric shares his enthusiasm for ‘novelty search,’ where machines learn from a variety of new behaviors and searches, as opposed to completing one task at a time. We touch on Automata’s progress, Eric’s long-term approach, and what his project might be used for. Near the end of our interview, we chat about CryptoWise, a collaborative analysis platform for cryptocurrency. Todd Resudek then opens with another edition of Pattern Matching, where he interviews Whatsapp engineer Michał Muskała. They talk about Michał’s career, the movies and music that he enjoys, and the projects that excite him. Tune in to hear more about both Michał and neuroevolution in AI. Key Points From This Episode: Experiencing tech burnout and challenges around algorithms rendering you redundant. Hear about Eric’s programming background and shifts in the industry. Backpropagation and using Elixir to build a neural evolutionary system. How Markov decision processes help systems choose between possible actions. Eric’s take on architecture versus design and the place of domain-driven design. Exploring Automata — Eric’s ambitious multi-agent behavior tree. The importance of neurodiversity when building AIs; they need to adapt to many needs. Novelty search; why learn through one task when you can learn through a variety of tasks at the same time? Automata’s practical applications and why Eric sees it as a long-term project. Eric shares a progress report on his work and using design processes like Sprint. What Eric would like people to use Automata for. A sense that Elixir is gaining in popularity within Silicon Valley. Eric gives an elevator-pitch for CryptoWise, a collaborative analysis platform for cryptocurrency. Todd Resudek interviews Michał Muskała on another edition of Pattern Matching. Michał shares his background and his move from Poland to London. Movies and music that Michał enjoys, and details on projects that excite him. In this episode, I'm joined by Eric Bay, a singer/songwriter from Surrey, England. We talk about his music career and collaborate on a brand new song. We recorded this back in March, so you'll hear us talk a little bit about the spread of the COVID-19 kind of at the earlier stages when more people were panic buying. After Eric and I finished writing the song over a video chat, we recorded our parts separately in our own home studios. Eric provided vocals and keyboard tracks along with some synth parts and I recorded backing vocals, guitars, synth, bass, drums and percussion. I did the initial mix, with Eric finishing the final mix and the song mastered by Joe Lonsdale. I'm really happy with how it turned. I hope it can provide some optimism for people during a difficult time. Enjoy. Lyrics: Knocking on the door on a rainy afternoonThursdays always seem to come around so soonI could tell from the look on your face that it's getting to yaYou wanna be strong but you're worried about the future A sunny day is on its way againThe clouds of fear will start to clear, my friendThese are troubled times indeedBut you got everything you needSo hold on for the sunny days ahead Saw a man I hadn't seen in yearsWasn't sure if he still lived 'round hereHe said the people in this town have all gone crazyHuman nature never ceases to amaze me A sunny day is on its way againThe clouds of fear will start to clear, my friendThese are troubled times indeedBut you got everything you needSo hold on for the sunny days ahead A sunny day is on its way againThe clouds of fear will start to clear, my friendThese are troubled times indeedBut you got everything you needSo hold on for the sunny days ahead A sunny day is on its way againThe clouds of fear will start to clear, my friendThese are troubled times indeedBut you got everything you needSo hold on for the sunny days ahead "Sunny Days" on Bandcamp "Sunny Days" on Soundcloud Eric Bay's Music Website "The List" by Eric Bay "Midnight Queen" by Luna Keller & Eric Bay

We start this episode digging into the contract demands of Dalvin Cook and the apparent stalemate between he and the Vikings. With initial reports saying Dalvin Cook wants Christian McCaffrey money, Nick and Eric jump to outline what Dalvin brings to the table and what might be a reasonable contract for Dalvin based on his skillset, durability, and value added to date as measured by PFF WAR. This conversation pointed to the scheme being a driving force of the Vikings running success because Alexander Mattison's performance relative to Dalvin Cook's was very similar in 2019. After Eric suggested Rick Spielman should call Bill O'Brien to work out a trade for Deshaun Watson, we jumped into PFF's latest QB rankings to discuss the methodology and why Kirk Cousins fell to the middle of the pack after such a strong year in 2019. Nick reminded us that while Kirk graded brilliantly in 2019, his 2018 season was bad across the board and once you average his most recent seasons against his career average, the PFF rankings make a lot more sense. Our conversation then turned to Eric's article about QB salaries and the implications for the rest of your team. With scheme playing such a huge role in Kirk's success and with the Vikings losing Stefon Diggs, we expect regression from Kirk Cousins in 2020. To round out the show, we discussed Kirk's place as the most valuable Vikings player in the last decade before playing a fun game of "this or that" with Daunte Culpepper vs Kirk Cousins. On today’s episode Spring is in the air! We’re walking around our neighborhoods like Fred Herzog, we’re cleaning our springs like it’s spring cleaning, and we’re finding zines that we should have reviewed months ago. We’re doing a lot of things, okay? We’re also giving a call to Jana Obscura! After Eric and Vania check in on each other, they check the answering machine for some good news. For this episode there wasn’t a question – there was just a plea: Tell us your good (film photography related) news. The calls came in and we were of good cheer!Walkin’ Talkin’ Fred Herzog!More and more we’re picking out a photographer for a bit of inspiration. This episode, we look at a few Kodachrome photos taken by Fred Herzog in Vancouver. He had been shooting since the 50s, but got his first show in 2007.Since many of us have been only getting out of the house for walks, we thought it would be a fine time to take a look at a photographer who was mostly known for just that. Fred Herzog from Vancouver, British Columbia, would take nearly the same route through the city every day.Through much of the 1950s and 60s Herzog tramped the streets after work and on weekends with a Kodak Retina on his hip. He had been given a large format plate camera when he was young, but tossed it for the small 35mm.The body of work he produced is extraordinary. At this point in photographic history, color was seen as sort of cheap and gimmicky. Fine art photographers as well as street photographers used black & white almost exclusively. Despite the tradition, Herzog fell in love with color. And not just any color, but the uncanny, vivid tones of Kodak’s Kodachrome. His photo “Paris Cafe” from 1959 features a man looking out of a cafe window. He’s framed by Christmas decorations and menus. Of this, Herzog later said, “The man in that picture looks somewhat disengaged, but I like the Santa Clauses and I like the price list of food.”This is a simple enough explanation. He likes these things. But he went on: “The whole atmosphere is somewhat in contradiction with the high-flying name Paris Café. And I like that kind of inherent contradiction in many of my pictures. Every picture, I’ve sometimes said, has a curve ball in it. They’re not just pictures of pretty scenes. They’re pictures that have a curve ball in them which makes you think.”You can find more of his work here. We also suggest the book Modern Color, which you can find here.Let’s Call Jana!Jana Obscura (@jana_obscura on IG) grew up in Honolulu and now lives in Seattle, and shoots a ridiculous array of cameras, and is mostly known for her instant and pinhole work. She’s also bok-choy’s biggest fan.We talk to her about her cameras, her walks around Seattle, laundromats, how she’s dealing with the whole plague days thing, and plans for a possible zine. Here are a few photos by Jana:Spring Freakin Cleaning! It’s technically spring and usually that means cleaning up the cobwebs, tossing and donating things you don’t use anymore and just giving your home a solid deep clean and maybe sanitizing in the more recent times. We thought it would be fun to talk about this whole spring cleaning jazz and how it pertains to photography. We’ll talking not just cleaning, but exercising your cameras. But we’ll also talk about storing your gear and maybe talk you into getting rid of stuff you no longer use. Oh, and we ramble on a bit about film.We mentioned a page written by a fellow with a lot of love for camera storage. Here it is.Zine ReviewsVania reviewed O’ahu by Dave Brotchie – a half size 54 page black and white semi glossy zine. This is a collection of images he took from the 8 years he called Hawaii home.Dave expresses how much he misses living on this wonderful island and plans to make it back someday. You can get a copy via @aloha_dave on InstagramMeanwhile, Eric reviewed Sam Warner’s Finding the Grain. It’s a glossy 8×8 b&w zine of some really lovely shots. With each, he gives a bit of the story behind the photo, as well as the camera, emulsion and developer he used to bring it into life. These are mostly 35mm, though he’s got a shot with the Pho-Tak Traveler 120.His choice in subjects is as varied as his choice of film and cameras, and I find this to be a really good thing. With this, you’ve got yourself a very diverse zine. There’s street, architecture, some wildlife and even macro – lots of flowers, which makes Vania really happy (she’s got a thing for men taking photos of flowers). You can pick it up from Sam on IG: @unrecoveringphotographyaddictSam’s website: https://www.theunrecoveringphotographyaddict.com/And we’ll see you next week! And that’s the show!Be sure to check out our Dev Party episodes. Rachel has to live with foster parents. Years later, Rachel talks with her best friend Lisa, who has lost her virginity to Eric, a football player. The football players have a game where they sleep with girls and receive points. After Eric rejects her, Lisa commits suicide. Her death ignites Rachel's dormant telekinetic powers. Rachel discovers a photo of Lisa and Eric. She tells school guidance counselor Sue Snell and Sheriff Kelton that Lisa and Eric slept together. Kelton looks into charging Eric with statutory rape. Walter, Rachel's Basset Hound dog, is hit by a car, but Jesse drives by and takes the dog to an animal hospital. They have coffee while Walter is recovering. Eric, Mark and several other football players learn that Rachel had a photo of Eric and Lisa together and gave it to Sheriff Kelton. They pay Rachel a visit at her house to intimidate her into not talking, but her powers stop them. Sue Snell meets with Rachel and learns Rachel is telekinetic. Snell shows Rachel the original high school from Carrie (1976) that she survived, but 70 people died in the fire that Carrie White started. A year later, Jesse is at college, sharing his room with Rachel's dog, Walter. Jesse dreams Rachel approaches him in his dorm. Zach writes, “I’ll go into my encounter in 2005. I lived in South Webster at the time and we were maybe five miles from the Wayne National Forest Trail Head. I graduated high school the year before and we would go up to the national forest and drive around the gravel roads up there. We called it the New road because it was built sometime in the 90s and allowed access throughout the forest. They set up primitive campsites and trails for 4wheelers and hunters. I deer and coon hunted it a lot as a young man and ran traps in the rivers running through the forest for muskrat and mink. Never in all my years out there have I encountered anything unusual beside a couple wild dog encounters and seeing a giant wild boar one morning. It was a last minute camping trip with friends one night that we all had an encounter. Me and some friends decided to camp out on the new road one Saturday evening. It was the end of September and the nights were becoming cold and chilly. We packed up my buddy Erics box van with beer and blankets then he followed me up the road behind my ford escort. We got to our campsite which was a dead end gravel road in Wayne National Forest. The locals use the circle turn around spot for target practice so there’s always shotgun shells and broken beer bottles everywhere. We cleaned up the area then start a fire. It was dark when we started the fire and kept it roaring through most of the night. We backed the van close to the fire and sat in the back just hanging out and bull*****. The first weird thing we noticed was every once in a while we would hear a ding off the top of the van. The first few times we didn’t pay much attention to it. I thought it was acorns falling or a bird dropping something from the trees over head. Well it kept happening so my buddy Eric climbs on top of the van and finds two gravel stones laying on the roof of his van. It was the same gravel from the gravel road we came in on. We laughed and though maybe it had popped out from under my tire and landed on the roof of his van because he did follow me a few miles through the forest on that gravel road. But it kept happened and as it got closer to midnight it was happening more often. Sometimes two rocks hitting at a time. We heard 4wheelers in the distance earlier that night and so my buddy starts yelling into the woods thinking it was someone messing with us. After Eric yelled and threw gravel back into the woods it seemed to stop. We finish our drinks (which was a 12 pack of Natty Light) then later down in the van to sleep for the night. I wanna say it was around 2am when we hit the hay. Anyway a couple hours later maybe around 4am I woke up to the sound of wood breaks and crashes in the forest. I woke Eric up and we sat there and listened to the woods cracking around our camping spot. If you ever seen the Blair Witch Project and remember the campers being woke up at night and the crashing in the woods around them. That’s what it sounded like. It was coming from different directions and once we stepped out of the van we noticed the sounds were coming from down the hill around our spot. The camping spot sat at the top of a hill and it was a sharp incline down on both sides and completely forested. After standing out here and listening for 15 mins or so we heard a loud crash closer to us so I grabbed the spotlight and we started shining down the hill into the woods. I shined for a few mins before I saw two yellow eyes looking up towards us from a bush thicket. I couldn’t make out the figure in the brush but thought it was something tall or something on a tree because the eyes looked like they were above the ground quite a bit. We watched it for a min then the eyes disappeared. I thought maybe it was a raccoon messing around. There is bear sightings there but it’s very uncommon to cross one. We started shining on the other side of the hill and soon we heard a big crash again. Like wood logs being smashed into the brush. We ran back over and shined down. This time we got a better look at the creature and it had red eyes instead of yellow this time. It was a tall dark figure but is hard to size because we were looking down at it form the top of the hill. We lite that sucker up with the spotlight and there was a Sasquatch. I have no other way of describing it.. it was built like tank and stocky. Looked more like the patty Bigfoot with the cone head. It’s fur looks black/gray and was matted in balls. The thing was Matty looking. Covered in dirt and mud. It’s hair did hang down a bit like a orangutans but was matter up bad. We didn’t smell anything tho.. that sucker was maybe 200 yards down a steep hill looking up at us. My Buddy Eric was freaking out and I was scared to death. I turned the light off and we packed up and was driving out of there in a matter of seconds lol. It didn’t really do anything besides stare up at us. No growls or movement at all. It was standing there still before I turned the light off and headed towards the car. We still talk about this story sometimes when we hang out. Made both of us a believer for sure. Sorry for the long story. My mom had several night encounters around her house. She has heard the Ohio howl out there at night. Long whoops too. My late great aunt had an encounter when she was little out there. She saw something walk through the corn field and it was taller then the corn… Also wanna mention the encounter I had last fall the creature was tall and linky where the creature we saw in 2005 was huge.” __________________________________________________________________________ I will also be welcoming M.K. Davis to the show. M.K. Davis has been researching the Patterson Sasquatch film for the last 20 years. He has traveled extensively and has amassed one of the largest collection of images from the film. M.K. has trekked the Bluff Creek drainage of Northern California on many occasions and his observations have led to several important discoveries on the film itself. While the Patterson film is only a very short piece of film, it continues to yield vital data that may one day lead to a more complete understanding what it is that is on the film and what it means to all of us.   Check out the Episode's page on the Sasquatch Chronicles website to view the videos M.K. mentions in the interview.

Eric, and his wife Amy, consciously seek out opportunities to help others by making an anonymous donation each year. They envision creating a book for their grandchildren that chronicles the stories of their random acts of kindness, hoping their book will be a family legacy allowing future generations to be bitten by the giving bug. After Eric learned that a single mom, who the family knew distantly, had to spend her scrupulously amassed Christmas savings to replace a totaled car, he and Amy filled an envelope with money. On Christmas morning, a trusted friend knocked on the woman’s door, handed her the stuffed envelope, wished her a Merry Christmas and walked away. Eric never heard anything more about the donation, but hoped he’d given the women great encouragement in a tough time.

125: How to Find Your Purpose - The 3 S Strategy

Life on Fire TV (Audio) – Online Business Coaching With Nick Unsworth

Today’s episode is all about finding your purpose and the “3 S strategy”. Strategy doesn’t matter if you don’t have a purpose and a purpose is hard to fulfill if you don’t have a strategy. They go hand in hand to successfully share your true gifts with the world and empower others to do the same. When you’re an entrepreneur in alignment, you know what your mission in life is. When you have truly nailed your purpose, you go from pushing a boulder up a mountain to being pulled through life with the flow. Everything in your life changes at that moment when you discover your purpose. Discovering your purpose requires you to be open-minded and then take action. You’ll also (more than likely) need someone like a coach who can look into your past from the outside and help you clearly see your story of the past and create a vision for your future. 3 S Strategy – Story | Stance | Strategy The 3 S Strategy is a part of all the VIP days which are 4 hours long. We start by drilling down into the story of your past, then figuring out your stance (what really pisses you off and usually comes directly from your story), then we develop a strategy to help you develop your messaging and get your gifts out into the world.  Your being, your story, your message is a big deal for others to hear. Even if you think it’s insignificant, you’ll discover with the 3 S Strategy why it’s so important to get it out into the world.   Eric Yang’s Story Eric was raised without love by a housecleaner who hated him. He was a troubled, unhappy kid whose mother left him and was living with a father who was more like an unfriendly neighbor rather than a loving father. By high school, Eric ended up very depressed and wanted to commit suicide. In the end, he was not able to follow through on it.  One day shortly after his failed attempt, he was walking by a bookstore and just picked the thickest English book which happened to be Tony Robbins’ “Unleash The Power Within”. He holed up in his room for 2 days straight reading it from cover to cover. Reading that book actually ended up saving Eric’s life and giving him a reason to live. After reading the book, Eric came to the realization that he had been jumping from school to school, running from his unloving parents and the housekeeper who hated him all in an effort to try and change the environments in which he was living. But what he then discovered was… you have to change within to be happy.   Eric Yang’s Stance “You have to change from within.” After Eric read the book and made his discovery, he ended up going to a Tony Robbins event and walked on fire. Soon after he came to Life on Fire’s Ignite event and walked on glass and broke through boards.  He discovered he wanted to help people change within.   Eric Yang’s Strategy Eric discovered his purpose and now has a moral obligation to share his story to help inspire others and ultimately save lives. He can devote his life to personal development and learn how to help people change from within. He can do that through writing books, doing webinars, being interviewed, being on stage sharing his stories and strategies on how to change from within.   The Eric Yang Story in 3 lines…   The power of a book The power of coaching The power of finding your purpose   In Eric’s Own Words:   Big ah-ha moment was the book “Unleash The Power Within” by Tony Robbins. Everyone needs to improve as a person. All the books, energy, and momentum won’t get you there without applying the right strategy. With the right tools and guidance you can succeed.
